Dear Reader Welcome to our autumn list; we’re delighted to introduce you to the latest fruits of our creative thinking. This catalogue highlights the breadth of our outlook and the consistency of our approach. We believe absolutely in the value of beautiful books in their physical form – not an outdated technology, as some would have us believe, but rather an essential part of our present and future. We are proud to announce that we now have over 2.5 million copies in print of our 30-Second series, in 22 languages worldwide. From this autumn we will publish four new titles a season in this series; to kick off this increase in output, we have books on Opera, Wine, Ancient China and Shakespeare, the latter with an introduction by Mark Rylance. How to Make Tea is the natural companion to How to Make Coffee (which is receiving rave reviews) and is a comprehensive guide to the art and science of the world’s favourite drink. Our biggest books of the season, at least in size, are The Book of Frogs, a global survey of this most interesting and attractive family, and a ground-breaking comprehensive survey of Whales, Dolphins and Porpoises. The ever-popular Mindfulness series also has new additions, in the form of books on Drawing, Parenting and Compassion. Ivy Kids continues to grow with our biggest ever list arriving this autumn. Highlights include the fun and educational Where’s Will?, a gentle introduction to the work of the great bard for children (and adults) through ten of his plays – can you spot where Will is hiding? Paper Pets is an appealing interactive book with ten press-out pets to make and Christmas Paper Play is a festive follow-up to the bestselling Paper Play from illustrator Lydia Crook. We look forward to you enjoying our books. As ever we welcome any comments or feedback that you might have. TOMBS OF THE SHANG ELITES the 30-second history The tombs of late Shang elites 3-SECOND SURVEY
Elite tombs of the late Shang offer valuable evidence regarding mortuary systems, elite craft industries, and, in particular, social organization.
3-MINUTE EXCAVATION
Late Shang elite tombs have also been widely found outside of Anyang. These tombs usually exhibit certain indigenous funeral practices, while including Yinxu-style mortuary goods. The occupants of these tombs might have been regional allies or agents of the Shang state taking charge of resources or tribute transportation. In other words, the late Shang appeared to rely on religion or ideology to maintain their large political and trade network.
100 g Afterlife & Beliefs
discovered at Yinxu (Anyang) can be classified into three categories: Shang royal burials, high-status tombs like the tomb of Fu Hao, and medium or low-rank elite tombs in cemeteries distributed throughout the capital. During the 1930s, the excavations at the Xibeigang cemetery uncovered a total of 14 tombs with ramps, alongside over 800 sacrificial pits. As the number of ramps associated with a tomb is viewed as an indicator of status, the eight 4-ramp burials in the cemetery—which are unparalleled in terms of their size, the number of human or animal sacrifices interred inside the chambers, and the number of sacrificial pits associated with them—are usually attributed to the Shang kings. Unfortunately, most of these royal tombs have been extensively looted over the course of history. The tomb of Fu Hao, a consort of King Wu Ding, was the first undisturbed high-rank burial to be discovered at Anyang. Her tomb included more than 1.75 tons (1600 kg) of bronzes, over 700 pieces of jade, and other prestige goods made of exotic materials, such as ivory cups and marble and turquoise objects. Lower-rank elite tombs were also found in various parts of Yinxu. Spatially, the cemeteries are often subdivided into different clusters that show consistency in

The Book of Frogs A life-size guide to six hundred species from around the world Recent intense scrutiny of amphibian conservation status makes this title a timely archive in the context of the frog’s dramatic decline. Frogs are adversely affected by loss of habitat, pollution by agricultural and industrial chemicals, and climate change. As such, the frog is an important pollutant indicator. This book will profile 600 species, representing the remarkable diversity of frogs, each species photographed life-size to capture its delicate detail, and accompanied by an in-depth species profile. Tim Halliday is one of the world’s foremost authorities on amphibians. He is Emeritus Professor of Biology at the UK’s Open University, has written a number of books, including the Smithsonian Handbooks’ volume on Reptiles and Amphibians, and has edited two editions of the highly regarded Encyclopedia of Amphibians and Reptiles.

The Cell The building blocks of life The microscopic cell is Earth’s greatest success story, and the common ancestor we share with all other organisms. Formed over three and a half billion years ago, life exploded from this minuscule powerhouse, first in the sea and then, over millions of years, across the land to create the complex living forms populating the planet today. How has such a minute organism been so powerful? What has enabled it both to create and to break down life on Earth over billions of years? And how have cells interacted to create such an extraordinary diversity of life? Here, Jack Challoner shines a spotlight on the story of the cell to explore how a myriad of interactions and symbiotic relationships have been the extraordinary catalyst for life. Jack Challoner graduated in physics at Imperial College, London University, and worked in the education unit at London’s Science Museum before launching a career as an author specializing in science and technology. He has written more than 40 books, including The Story of Science (2012) and Real Lives: John Snow (2013). He has also developed television programmes for the BBC and acted as a scientific consultant on numerous books and articles.

How to Make Tea The science behind the leaf How do you like your tea? An ethereal infusion, the ghost of a scent wafting across your taste buds? Or a mug of traditional brew, so strong that a spoon can stand up in it? We’ve been drinking tea for thousands of years, yet few of us realize that all tea – from elegant lapsang to pungent pu-erh – come from the same source. The taste is down to science: geography, chemistry and physics, the application of heat and pressure, and the magic of time and enzymes. How to Make Tea offers a thorough grounding and lays out the principles for the tea-loving nonscientist: learn how to extract the best from every cup. Brian R. Keating has been a pioneer in tea research for over 30 years. He is founder of Sage Group®, a Seattle-based natural products consultancy. Keating helped the Whole Foods Market to establish its own tea division, and has written for many periodicals. Kim Long is a writer, researcher and photographer based in Denver. He has authored several books, including Universe: God, Man & Science and The Art of Mindful Walking.
Sky wanderers: the planets The word ‘planet’ is based on a Greek word for ‘wanderer’, because of the planets’ passage through the twelve constellations of the zodiac. Like the Earth, all the planets are satellites of the Sun. As they orbit the Sun they move through the zodiac at varying speeds. This can cause a problem for new observers as they confuse the shapes of the constellations. Astronomy notes in a newspaper, or from the internet, will alert you to the So hot! planets’ current positions.
VENUS, the brightest and closest to us of the planets, follows an orbit nearer to the Sun than we do. It is a rocky world about the same size as Earth and shrouded in a thick cloud-filled atmosphere of carbon dioxide. When it follows the Sun down to the horizon it is known as the EVENING STAR; when it rises before the Sun it becomes the MORNING STAR.

MERCURY, another rocky world, orbits even closer to the Sun and is rarely seen because it is too close to the solar glare. It is worth looking for in the twilight just after sunset, or in a dawn sky. MARS is perhaps the most dramatic of the planets. It orbits beyond the Earth and becomes very bright to us when at its closest. Its red colour is due to

its rusty deserts. It’s worth watching Mars from night to night because it travels so fast, moving through all twelve zodiac constellations in a couple of years.
JUPITER, a bright, gas planet, orbits the Sun at a leisurely pace, taking twelve Earth-years to complete one Jupiter-year. With binoculars you can watch four of its moons as they orbit the planet. It was these that Galileo first saw in the 17th century, proving that the Earth was not at the centre of all things.
SATURN is also bright, but you will need a small telescope to view its famous and very beautiful ring system. URANUS and NEPTUNE can only be seen with a telescope because they are so remote.

A calligraphic finish The square-edged pen is a very effective instrument for creating decorative designs that coordinate well with calligraphy, because the thicks and thins of the penstrokes match those in the lettering. A calligraphic layout can be spoiled by overelaborate illustrative decoration. However, the use of a small, carefully designed abstract form at the end of the text can complete an arrangement very nicely. This project will give you some experience in creating such a design using the squareedged pen. It will also help you develop your pen skills, as it involves the tricky technique of writing several lines parallel to each other.

Write a second group of three lines parallel to the first, positioning each line where they fit best. Add a third set of lines in the same way. The vertical lines can start and end with or without overlapping the horizontals. These are all the basic skills you need to create the finishing piece.
Writing vertical and horizontal parallel lines
1
Start by writing a simple left to right curving line rather like a flattened letter l. Use any of your writing instruments for this—you might find the bamboo pen best. When you are confident you can write a good, balanced form, write two similar lines parallel to each other. If you write the second line above the first, it will have to start to the right of it. If you write it below, it will start to the left. Finally, try writing three lines parallel to each other.
2
Now try doing the same three exercises but this time using vertical penstrokes. Even though you are not using letterforms, try to feel that you are writing with the pen, using wellcontrolled, smooth strokes.

3
We will now add a second line to these simple forms. Write two penstrokes without lifting the pen, to form a shape rather like a capital L. This time, you will have to write the duplicate form a little above and to the right of the first. Add a third form, again above and to the right.
4
Writing this form without a pen lift is rather limiting. By keeping the elements separate, we can position them where they work best. To do this, we will use the basic strokes learned from steps 1 and 2. Write three penstrokes—two horizontal and one vertical, as in the illustration. This could be an italic capital I.
