HISTORY

Sea Monsters

The lore and legacy of Olaus Magnus’s Marine Map Olaus Magnus’s 1539 Carta Marina can be considered the major source of Renaissance sea monster iconography and lore. The map and its voluminous commentary established Olaus as the principal expert of his time on the sea serpent, the giant squid and sea monsters in general. His marine beasts multiplied in natural histories, and his map was to inspire and influence marine zoology and cartography for centuries thereafter. Sea Monsters introduces readers to Magnus’s fantastic sea beasts. Each creature is introduced by its historical narrative, bursting forth in startling full-bleed art before its meaning and influence are discussed. Joseph Nigg is one of the world’s leading experts on fantastical

animals. His books have garnered multiple awards and been translated into more than 20 languages. They include The Book of Fabulous Beasts, an anthology of the best historical writing on the subject.

GENERAL REFERENCE /PHYSICS

What if Einstein Was Wrong? Asking the big questions about physics

Today, scientists are asking ‘What if light speed is overtaken?’ Einstein’s theory of relativity, so long a cornerstone of contemporary scientific belief, may be a little shakier than once thought. At the time when the hunt for the Higgs boson is threatening to undermine the foundations of what we thought we knew, What if Einstein Was Wrong? asks a team of scholars to experiment with 50 topical scientific speculations. Consider what if... you had proof of a parallel universe, if you could be in two places at once, or if there was warp drive – and, in the process, learn a little more about the shape that science seems likely to take in the future. Brian Clegg read Natural Sciences, focusing on Experimental

Physics, at Cambridge University. He has written for Nature, The Times and The Wall Street Journal and is editor of the book review site www.popularscience.co.uk. His publications include A Brief History of Infinity and How to Build a Time Machine.

GENERAL REFERENCE /ECONOMICS

What if Money Grew on Trees? Asking the big questions about economics

‘What if...?’ are the two words that sow the seeds for human speculation, experimentation, invention, evolution, revolution and change. In an uncertain age, economists are asking, ‘What if growth stops growing?’; scientists, ‘What if light speed gets overtaken?’; and politicians, ‘What if the Third World becomes the first?’ What if Money Grew on Trees? challenges a team of scholars to put their minds to 50 speculations on economics, at a time when the banking system seems to be failing and the whole idea of capitalism is up for debate. Consider a world where gold is worthless, nobody manufactures anything, and the bulls and bears are locked out of the market. En route, accumulate the knowledge to debate the shape that our financial world might take in the future. David Boyle is a fellow of the New Economics Foundation in London and has written widely about the future of money. He is the author of books including Money Matters, The Money Changers and Funny Money, and the co-author of Eminent Corporations and The New Economics: A Bigger Picture. He broadcasts regularly and is a contributor to publications including The Guardian, the New Statesman and the The Tablet. He is a prolific blogger on the New Economics site, and has stood for election to Parliament.

ustralia has relatively few owl species. The commonest and best known is the Boobook or Southern Boobook, named for its two-note song. The Boobook is active only at night, although its daytime hiding place is sometimes given away if small birds find it – they will loudly mob it until it flies away. Boobooks live wherever there are trees, including in towns.

Call & Song The Boobook gets its name from its territorial song, a repeated and clear two-note hoot. The song is sometimes preceded by softer croaks. Among its calls is a cat-like miaow.

Size Male ...................25–32 cm (9¾–12½ in) Female .................28–36 cm (11–14¼ in) Wingspan ......188–261 cm (74–102¾ in)

Features

Habitat & Distribution

The Boobook’s plumage colour is very variable, but in all its forms it has a distinctive shape, with long wings and tail, and a rather small head. The facial disc is not clearly defined, making it look hawk-like rather than typically ‘owlish’. The plumage is softly dappled grey or grey-brown and whitish all over, with some forms quite reddish on the breast. The rather bulging eyes are bright yellow, giving it an intensely startled expression.

The Boobook is quite widespread in Australia, apart from the interior deserts, and is also found in New Guinea and the Lesser Sunda islands. It can be found in woodland, parks and gardens.

Hunting This owl takes a variety of small prey, including birds and mammals but particularly insects, which it may catch in flight. In towns, Boobooks are sometimes seen catching moths and beetles around street lights.

Owls are power ful, predator y and unpredictable and yet with their dark, penetrating gaze, circular, human-like faces and cryptic plumage patterns, they continue to capture our hearts. Who could fail to fall for the fascinations of these feathered phenomena? Owls were an enigma...until now. Let’s LIFT THE LID a little on these shy birds.

he Suffolk (also known as the Suffolk Punch), was known for being economical to keep as it needed less feed than other working horses of a similar size. Its placid nature is cited as one of the reasons for its natural longevity. The Suffolk also matures comparatively early – going into work at around three years of age whereas other breeds may not be ready before the age of four or even five. Features All Suffolk horses are a rich chestnut in colour and their distinct conformation is of a large and powerful body set on short, sturdy legs, which have little or no feather. They can weigh up to 1 tonne (0.98 tons).

Related Breeds References to the Suffolk date back to the early 1500s. Although their origins are unknown, they are thought to be closer to the Haflinger than to other heavy horse breeds.

Size Stallion ..........163–171 cm (16–16.3 hh) Mare ...............163–171 cm (16–16.3 hh)

Origin & Distribution As the name suggests, the breed originates from the county of Suffolk in England. It has been exported to Russia, North and South America, Australia, Africa and Europe but is on the rare breed list in the UK and the USA.

Uses The Suffolk’s good temperament, strength, early maturity, soundness (lack of lameness) and being economical to keep make it an ideal farm horse. The characteristic wide-set legs and lack of feather allowed them to work in crops without causing damage. They also worked on the roads hauling anything from farm produce to omnibuses.

Soil, Soul & Society A new trinity for our time

We are all members of a ‘one-earth society’, and caring for the earth and soul is interrelated. This is the message of Satish Kumar, the internationally-respected peace and environment activist who has been gently setting the agenda for change for over 50 years. In Soil, Soul and Society, Satish presents the new trinity for our age of sustainability – one that shares the knowledge that we are very much part of nature; that what we do to nature we in fact do to ourselves; and that the earth is soulful. He urges readers to create a new consciousness that reveres nature and explores how, as a global society, we need to embrace diversity and become pilgrims on this earth – not tourists. To bring about change in the world we must be the change we wish to see. Satish Kumar is a former Jain monk and an international peace

and environment activist. He made headlines around the globe when he walked from New Delhi to Moscow, Paris, London and Washington, delivering ‘peace tea’ to the countries’ leaders. Satish is the long-standing editor of the highly respected Resurgence & Ecologist magazine, and co-founder of the Schumacher College, which educates its students in ecoconsciousness and the means for effective change.

Ecologist Guide to Fashion Why green is the new black

As eco fashion becomes increasingly stylish, and mainstream fashion gets greener, could it be the end for green chic as we know it? The Ecologist Guide to Fashion investigates changing attitudes to “eco” and how the fashion world is embracing them. From the good, the bad and the ugly of fashion to the big trends, we look behind the labels and ask whether the future looks green. With ecological concerns gaining momentum worldwide and eco designers fêted and recognized alongside their non-eco counterparts, more than ever before the fashion industry is proving that it can be a force for good. Whether it’s local, Fairtrade or organic, there’s never been a better time to get into greener garments. Ruth Styles is a fashion journalist and former Green Living editor of the Ecologist. She has more than seven years experience of writing about, exploring, and, yes, wearing fashion. Along with exposing the darker sides of the industry, she’s a passionate believer in fashion as a force for good and a source of pleasure for millions. Ecologist Guide to Food We are what we eat

The Ecologist has set the agenda on food issues for more than 40 years. Through powerful reportage – including undercover investigations – comment and analysis, plus practical guides to ethical purchasing and ‘growing your own’, along with profiles celebrating innovation and championing food pioneers, this globally respected environmental icon has covered all things food-related in a way few other publications could – or would. Continuing the Ecologist’s reputation of challenging established thinking, the Ecologist Guide To Food is essential reading for anyone interested in knowing the truth behind the packaging and finding out what can be done to counter some of the problems inherent in food production today. Drawing from a unique archive of coverage, and using much new material, we delve behind the labels to investigate the often-unpalatable truth about many of the foodstuffs we consume each day. We also look at the alternatives, giving a voice to some of those going against the grain to produce food that is good for us and the planet. Andrew Wasley is a UK-based investigative journalist specializing in food, the environment and consumer affairs. And the best thing is, if you get bored with your watch strap, you can make a new one! Megan Parkin works as a freelance illustrator and designer in Brighton. She creates beautiful patterns and colourful designs, which translate to pretty and punchy jewellery creations.

Noah’s Knits

These eight grim little characters are easily knitted and, because they are held together with velcro, just as easily ripped apart. Best of all, they’re mix and match, so you can use the bits (including woolly entrails, brains and a cleaver) to create hundreds of ghoulish combinations.

Celebrated knitting author Fiona Goble brings the characters from six well-loved classics to life. From the sly yet foolish wolf of Little Red Riding Hood to the naive piglets of The Three Little Pigs, the contents are a guaranteed hit with children and parents alike.

In this touching and amusing book you can teach a child all about a day in the farming life as you knit the characters of the farmyard. They make a great play set when completed – there’s even a squidgy tractor and a charming playmat with fields and hedges that can serve as everything from an action play-setting during the day to a comfort blanket at night.

Story book and knitting guide combined, Noah’s Knits offers knitting patterns for 14 pairs of animals, every one with its own distinct personality, plus Noah and his wife, and a childfriendly retelling of the story to read aloud as you go. There’s even a fold-out cardboard Ark included to help set the scene when you’ve finished.

This pack contains all you need to make and fly a classic four-cell tetrahedral kite, plus easy-tofollow instructions to size up the basic model to any dimension you choose and a photographic guide that shows you how to fly your completed masterpiece to impressive heights.

Press-out-and-fold pieces enable you to make your own classically elegant chess set: an enjoyable solo or family project. And when you’ve finished, you can play: the book includes a guide to the rules and some key tactics for playing the game of kings, along with a matching fold-out board.

An empty plastic drinks bottle can make an amazingly effective rocket with a pump, some water and just a little technical know-how. These 20 examples are easy to put together with everyday materials, and each offers a science lesson in the most entertaining form. All the projects are illustrated with inspirational photographs that show each and every rocket in impressive action.

Perfect for that ‘I’m bored’ moment during the long summer holidays, the 18 inventive ideas in this book really work, from the lemon cannon to the whizzing light-up electronic ‘bug’ and the impressively huge hot-air balloon. None calls for expensive or hardto-find materials and all make great family projects that you can work on together before enjoying the results.

Recently we’ve added an appealing stationery list, too, which you’ll find at the back of the catalogue. All Ivy titles are highly illustrated non-fiction, and they cover a wide range of subjects, from exhaustively researched and beautifully produced reference books, bringing our visual flair to traditional scholarship, to quirky and eclectic titles on craft and popular culture. Leaping Hare Press represents the conscience of the list, inspiring readers to translate ethical and environmental values to their practical lifestyles, while Ivy Kids, the newest entrant on the block, brings the same creative energy to a range of lively titles to appeal to children from 3 up.
