Bone is one of the most extraordinary materials in the natural world – flexible and strong, available in a number of types and densities. Just look at the range of jobs it can do, from supporting a huge mammal like an elephant to enabling a bat to fly. And further back, scanning the distant past, scientists know what they know about the dinosaurs from their fossilized bones, reminders of how different our world used to be. Skeletons takes the virtuoso engravings of the 19th and early 20th centuries and marries them with a contemporary, readable text that brings them right up to date, creating an appealing mix of scientific eye candy and cutting-edge scholarship. Andrew Kirk was educated at Oxford University and
worked in publishing for over 20 years before becoming a full-time writer. His previous titles have included books on ancient history and a study of Thoreau. This is his sixth book.

Appearing in everything from ancient myths and superstitions to modern children’s stories, these beautiful birds are seen both as harbingers of good and bad news and icons of fear and wisdom. Yet uncovering the reality of their lives is a huge challenge as most are nocturnal and many are extremely secretive in their habits. New species are still being discovered, and fresh insights being gained into even the most familiar species. Owls brings together full descriptions and distribution maps for all 221 known owl species, and is illustrated with stunning colour photographs. Marianne Taylor is a freelance writer, illustrator,
photographer and editor. She worked for seven years in natural history publishing, and her particular interest in owls was sparked by a period in 2005 working with bird ringers studying Ural, Tengmalm’s and Eagle Owls in the forests of Sweden. She has written on a range of natural history subjects and her previous books include the RSPB’s British Birds of Prey.

Fashion Details combines the studies of the two classic 19th-century illustrators Auguste Racinet and Friedrich Hottenroth. Their works are presented first chronologically and then by subject, so that illustrators, students and historians can choose their preferred route, either following the path of fashion through the centuries, or studying the contrasting styles of individual clothing and accessories in detail. Silhouettes reveal the shifting shapes of style through the ages, while detailed cross-references help the researcher navigate the complex chronology of costume. Melissa Leventon is a specialist in European and American costume and textiles. Formerly Curator-inCharge of Textiles at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, she now teaches Fashion History and Fashion Theory at California College of the Arts.

Most dog owners tend to think of games as the reward that comes after a training session. But play makes a terrific training tool, too, if you know which games to pick and the right ways to play them. What’s more, you can tailor games to your dog’s strengths and introduce lots of variations to his favourite activities. Fun & Games for a Smarter Dog offers dozens of options to help you build your bond with your dog, boost his thinking skills and ramp up his fitness levels. Each one looks at the way your dog approaches play and what he can learn when you play together, and takes you step by step through the activity. Even better, it ensures your dog will have so much fun that he’ll never know he’s been taking classes. Andrew Banks has authored a number of bestselling
books on dogs, ranging from general guides to more specific titles on ways to enhance your relationship with your pet, including The Complete Book of the Dog (2007) and The Secret Language of Puppies (2015). Bonding Games / Swap
SWAP Giving up a valued object can be a big deal for a dog. Teaching ‘Swap’ shows your pet that if he gives something up to you willingly, even something he values, he’ll get something just as good back in exchange. What’s more, as you practice, you’ll end up giving him back the original object as well. Soon he’ll be handing over his toy, bone, or whatever you ask for, and eagerly taking the substitute you’re offering, confident that you won’t be depriving him. WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO? Show your pet that he won’t regret giving something up to you when he’s asked.
it out of his mouth, or he’ll be less likely to give it to you next time. Stay patient, and return the first toy as soon as your dog is focused on the treat toy (you can wait a few more seconds before returning it as your dog learns to trust that he will get it back). 5 It may take a few weeks of regular practice, but you’ll find that, as your dog becomes used to giving things up to you, you can reduce the ‘value’ of what you’re offering in exchange. Eventually, he’ll happily give something up to you as soon as you say ‘Swap’.
1 This is an opportunistic exercise: you
need to be ready for the right situation to happen naturally. Wait until your pet is relaxed and happily playing with a favorite toy. Have a hollow treat toy stuffed with something irresistible ready, and, when you see your opportunity, fetch it from the fridge. 2 Simply approach your dog in a relaxed way, bend or kneel down beside him and show him the stuffed treat toy. If he immediately drops whatever he’s playing with, say ‘Swap’, hand him the substitute and gently pick up the original toy. 3 Sometimes he’ll grab for the original toy, dropping the new one. If he does, give it to him immediately (you want to teach him that he won’t lose out in any way by working with you). If he loses interest in the original toy, lay it down gently nearby, so that he can see that he ended up with both the things he wanted. 4 Practice this whenever the chance arises (it’s a good idea to have a pre-stuffed treat toy ready in the fridge at all times when you’re teaching your pet this exercise). Always wait until your dog gives up the initial toy willingly—don’t cheat by pulling
WHAT HE LEARNS To give things up to you easily, and to trust that you’ll treat him respectfully around the things he values. WHY IT’S USEFUL On the rare occasion that your dog has something he shouldn’t (he’s chewing a shoe, perhaps, or he’s found a chicken bone in the street) and you need him to give it up to you without a battle, you’ll have already done the groundwork.
HANDS OFF! Dog society is interesting in the way in which it views possession of objects: it’s unusual to see a dog, even a larger and stronger dog, take a coveted item (whether it be a toy or a bone) away from another who has it. If the second dog leaves the treasure, even for a moment, all bets are off: the first dog will feel free to take it. But taking something by force that another dog is enjoying doesn’t often happen in everyday canine etiquette.

Maybe there was someone knitting with us in mind in the weeks before we were born. Outgrowing baby garments, we became conscious of clothes and, at some point, recognized the action of knitting. It is hard to remember when I first understood that knitted things could be made by people I knew. As my dexterity developed, I learned how to knit, discovering how stitches work.

ollecting skills from books and knitters around me continues to spark ideas of what I could make. Together, knitting and the meditative space it offers, have provided me with a lifelong structure for learning. Like life, knitting has its ups, downs, easy and difficult bits. Much like mood swings, and other uncontrollable feelings, craft processes are inconvenient and unpredictable. Things can change quickly. Craft demands frequent practice, and constantly asks us to relish a challenge, much in the same vein as meditation. Sometimes we can relax with repetitive work, and other times knitting demands serious concentration. We can sit quietly knitting mindfully on our own, or use our knitting presence to offer trusted companionship. We can knit things for ourselves, our loved ones, or for the world around us. Sometimes when my knitting is turning out well, I consider the afterlife, where my knitting continues its journey on Earth without me.

Investigating the history of knitting, I learned that I am one student, of a new generation, keeping skills alive and working with the intention of making the world a better place. Textile archives the world over show us designs and social histories, but for the most part, the legacy of a domestic knitter is rarely documented. Many knitters before me did not sign their work, nor did much of it survive, because it was loved, used, and worn until it was dust. The gift a knitter leaves behind is, hope of course, one of skilled, beautiful textiles, which will hopefully be mended and kept safe, but alongside our material product we leave a subtle, un-quantifiable atmosphere, dedidedi
WHEREVER DESIGN LIKES
On the most basic level, knitting proves that we can make things happen. If something is beautiful and functional, it holds truth. Making a truthful object with your own bare hands disproves any lack of belief in your abilities. A knitter starts with a dream, and turns it into a reality. Making things is exciting enough for a craftsperson, but for a noncraftsperson, the process looks like pure magic. Enjoy noticing people’s astonishment at your masterpieces, as you remember all you have learned through the making of them. Quietly give thanks for the bond you have with your textile and consider the real magic of consciousness.
