The Grammar of Ornament A visual reference of form and colour in architecture and the decorative arts First published in 1856, The Grammar of Ornament remains a design classic. As Owen Jones, its creator, admired the array of ornament he encountered on his global travels, so his distaste grew for mongrel design which married unrelated styles, resulting in an unaesthetic end effect. The result was the Grammar. Each illustration is allotted its place within a cultural context and illuminated in this new edition by a contemporary commentary. Owen Jones was an architect and designer who taught Applied Arts at the South Kensington School of Design in the 1850s and served as Superintendent of Works at the Great Exhibition of 1851. Iain Zaczek, who has contributed the new commentaries, is an art historian who has written widely on the history of design.

Heirloom Plants A complete compendium of heritage vegetables, fruit & flowers Heirloom plants often have a charm lacking in commercially produced varieties. And unless these seeds are grown and saved, they will be not only forgotten, but lost, too. Based on the seed catalogues of Thomas Etty, Heirloom Plants lists exciting cultivars, along with profiles and growing tips. Responsible gardening, certainly – but with more than a hint of romance; who could resist the lure of the splendid Hubbard Green Warty squash, or the Green Zebra tomato? Lorraine Harrison is a keen practical gardener with a master’s degree in garden history. In addition to contributing to the gardening quarterly Hortus, she has authored a number of books, among them the bestselling Latin for Gardeners. Ray Warner is the dedicated seedsman behind the heirloom seed company Thomas Etty Esq., named after his great great grandfather, who himself dealt in seeds in the 19th century. The 50 most fundamental concepts in physics, each explained in half a minute
Revised cover in folder..... NB Cant find rev cover
30-Second Physics tackles the big ideas behind life as we know it, from the electromagnetic waves that enable us to connect from opposite ends of the Earth in an instant to the gravity that keeps our feet firmly on the ground. In a world where physics is an everyday essential, here is the fastest way to get up to speed with rocket science – and the rest. Brian Clegg, consultant editor, read Natural Sciences, focusing on experimental physics, at Cambridge University. He has written for Nature, The Times and The Wall Street Journal and lectured at Oxford, Cambridge and the Royal Institution. He is editor of the book review site popularscience. co.uk, and his publications include A Brief History of Infinity and How to Build a Time Machine.
3-SECOND THRASH
Every material thing in our familiar world is made of atoms, which are the fundamental units of chemical theory.
3-MINUTE THOUGHT
Atoms are small enough to show quantum-mechanical behaviour, such as exhibiting wave-like properties under the right conditions. Interference of atom waves has been observed many times in recent decades, even for single atoms. Wave interference effects have also been observed for molecules containing more than 100 atoms each. Whether there is any fundamental size limit on such phenomena is a question still under discussion.
ATOMS
TEMPERATURE
the 30-second theory
the 30-second theory
It is marvellously convenient that
Temperature is an everyday
all ordinary matter is made up of atoms, for that greatly simplifies the job of explaining its properties. A great deal, from the shapes of crystals to the stretchiness of rubber, can be explained on the basis of how atoms join and stack together in groups. The dizzying diversity of behaviour amongst organic (carbon-based) substances, from drugs to solvents to DNA, originates in the unions of just a few types of atom into molecules with different shapes and physical and chemical properties. Indeed, the entire physical world can be described with only 92 or so basic building blocks, only a few dozen of which are particularly common. Of course, that isn’t all there is to it: atoms are misnamed, for they are not really indivisible (the meaning of the Greek a-tomos, from which they got their name). But atoms are the fundamental unit of chemical theory: each element comprises atoms with the same number of nuclear protons and orbiting electrons (the number of neutrons may vary in different isotopes) and it is primarily the disposition of electrons that determines how atoms react chemically with others. Thanks to the atomic granularity of matter, everything from the hardness of diamond to the toxicity of lead can be understood using the same theoretical framework: the quantum theory of atoms.

3-MINUTE THOUGHT
Temperatures can be negative even on the Kelvin scale. But this doesn’t mean that such objects are colder than absolute zero. They may be so hot that their entropy is almost ‘saturated’, and adding more heat energy decreases rather than increases it. Some negative-temperature systems are out of thermal equilibrium, so that there are more high-energy than low-energy states: lasers are one example.
30-SECOND TEXT Philip Ball
Atoms are building blocks – from the galaxies in space to the Earth itself to the smallest piece of matter.
142 g Thermodynamics
concept that is perhaps more complicated than it first appears. Crudely put, it is a measure of the amount of heat in a substance. But some substances can absorb heat more readily than others, so it takes more heat input to raise their temperature. More rigorously expressed, temperature describes how much a certain input of heat adds to the different available configurations of the particles that make up a substance – a quantity related to the material’s so-called entropy. Despite these subtleties, temperature is not a hard concept to grasp, because it is generally quite easy to measure, and because it fits so neatly with our tactile sense of hot and cold: hot things have a high temperature. What’s more, temperature offers a clear criterion for how heat flows between objects: always from the hotter to the colder. Temperature is traditionally measured using the Celsius and Fahrenheit scales, but physicists prefer the Kelvin scale, because its zero occurs at the lowest possible temperature: absolute zero (-273.15ºC or -459.67ºF), corresponding to zero heat content. This is impossible to attain in the real world, but scientists have cooled materials down to less than one-billionth of a degree Kelvin (a nanokelvin).

Not only a towering figure in his own era, Newton also left an immense scientific legacy, much of which still underpins key theories today. So if the principal thing you remember about him is that an apple fell on his head, it’s high time you learned a little more. 30-Second Newton offers an enjoyable fast-track guide to the theories that formed the core of Newton’s thinking, and looks at the roles he played over his long life, and the connections he forged with his contemporaries. He has written for Nature, The Times and The Wall Street Journal and lectured at Oxford, Cambridge and the Royal Institution. 3-SECOND THRASH
Newton performed some painful, brutal and potentially damaging experiments on his own eyes, including one in which he inserted an object between his eye and its socket.
3-MINUTE THOUGHT
Science has a remarkable history of people experimenting on themselves. Humphry Davy investigated the effects of laughing gas (nitrous oxide) on himself – a poem he wrote afterwards suggests he rather enjoyed the experience; Pierre Currie taped radium salts to his arm for ten hours; Werner Forssman inserted a catheter in a vein, pushed all the way to his heart and then took an X-ray of it.

scientific experiments, Newton was very much prepared to put his body on the line. This included staring at the Sun reflected in a mirror with one eye until all pale objects seemed to take on the colour red and dark ones blue. Even when this sensation ceased, he was able to recover this ‘fantasie’ by closing his eye and imagining he was looking at the Sun. It took Newton four days to recover his sight to an acceptable level, and he had recurring problems over the following months. Even more astonishingly, Newton also physically interfered with his own sight. In notes written in 1665–66, Newton describes an experiment in which he inserted a bodkin (a little like a knitting needle) between his eye and its socket as near to the back of the eye as possible. He then pressed so as to change the retina’s curvature, resulting in his seeing ‘white darke & coloured circles’ as he continued to vary the pressure and movement. Newton was not alone among his contemporaries in viewing his own body as a legitimate entity on which to experiment, but his dedication to the cause is unquestionable given the pain he must have subsequently suffered.

3-MINUTE THOUGHT
In his dealings with Hooke Newton gained something of a reputation for not acknowledging those from whom he got ideas. But he was generous in the Principia in ascribing the first two laws to Galileo, saying that it was in using these that his Italian predecessor understood the falling of heavy bodies and the movement of projectiles. In reality, although there was some overlap, Galileo could not have conceived the second law as Newton did, as he did not have the concept of mass.
98 g The Physics of Motion
subtly hidden when it comes to gravity, it is still present in practically every situation where an object is accelerated. In its original form it tells us that ‘A change in motion is proportional to the motive force impressed and takes place along the straight line in which that force is impressed.’ Before stating his laws, Newton gave a number of definitions, and the quantity of motion he has in mind ‘arises from the velocity and the quantity of matter jointly’ – it was what we would now call its momentum, made up of mass times velocity. Newton was saying that the change in momentum is proportional to the change in the force applied, so ‘If some force generates any motion, twice the force will generate twice the motion.’ What Newton had in mind was an ‘impulsive force’ – like giving something a kick – rather than a continually acting force, which he elsewhere made clear would produce the more familiar form of the second law dealing with a continuously applied force, that force = mass x acceleration.

Cut & Colour Playbook Seasons Create beautiful layered paper dioramas with this clever art activity book. With a combination of drawing, colouring and craft skills, children are taken page-by-page through the creation of four seasonal landscape scenes. The front of the pages for each scene offer line illustrations, created by Anouck Boisrobert, to which children can add detail and colour. On turning the page, cut lines are shown, with instructions telling readers which part of the page to cut away. As each page is finished, a layered landscape is slowly created and at the end, when the reader flips back to the first page, the completed seasonal scene will be revealed in all its glory! The activities will help children develop scissor skills, as well as offering an inventive and magical twist on conventional colouring books. Anouck Boisrobert is an illustrator and graphic designer who has illustrated several books including Popville and In the Forest, published by Tate books. She studied Illustration at the École Estienne.
