DESCRIPTION
Metafarm, stands for Metabolic Farm, is an urban agricultural learning centre that uses human experience, technology and research as design tools. The building is engineered to be able to replicate, grow, or shrink according to the season, weather, or uses. Its modularity allows for the space to be an immersive walking experience that hosts different types of exhibitions, expo, and events. The extended structures that go beyond the conservatories are used for research laboratories and developments of agricultural technologies. The objective is to act as a catalyst of ecological innovation in Belfast and to shift the paradigm of construction and design to accommodate urban expansion. Due to its height, the building can be seen from a distance, standing tall as a symbol of knowledge, sustainability, adaptability and resilience.

This Metabolic Structural system allows the building to adapt to its needs, whether that is an office building, vertical farm, or a full exhibition venue. The walls, roofs and floors are made of kit-of-parts systems that are demountable and modular. The Upper Levels accommodate rainwater harvesting technologies as well as solar panels used to power the entire building. The modularity of the timber modules allow for the building to extend higher than the modules inside the envelope, or even lower.

PROBLEM SOLVED
Waste Crisis - Food / Cardboard / Plastic Waste
DESCRIPTION
WasteLab is a student union that aims to increase awareness upon the issue of waste. The existing internal walls were tore down and replaced by Cardboard walls, inspired by Shigeru Ban. The intend is to allow for as much transparency in the importance of recycing, and how technologies can aid in doing so. The building is a synergy of sustainability and innovations, where every new thing built is of recycled waste and mass timber.

DESCRIPTION
Inspired by the bespoke screenings of the Belfast Film Festival, the Aquaplex proposes a spectrum of pavilions that tailor unique experiences onto different film genres. Imagine watching a classic film while sitting on a ‘floating car’, re-living the good old drive-in theatre experience, watching a sci-fi movie on an immersive high tech, high resolution expansive dome screen, or enjoying a disney film with your friends on a large bean bag chair. Although it started out as a temporary entertainment hub that sits and glides accross the edge of River Lagan, the project along with its ambition grew. The core of the design evolves following the urgency to adapt to climate change that soon will affect the river in a significant way. The Aquaplex speculates the future of cities using circular design principles as an environmental solution and an urban — if not global — strategy.
Inside the Pavilion
The structure of the pavilion explores the synergies between organic architecture and kinetic systems, where technology exists within the building fabric. The pavilion uses a rolling mechanism that splits open its structure, allowing the visitors to exit the space after the movie through an unfolding hydraulic bridge that connects to the neighbouring deck. On the opposite side of the pavilion, a wind-harvesting electric sail enveloped in soft structure fits behind each pavilion like a puzzle, generating electricity throughout the venue. Sustainability and green energy is integrated within every fragment of this project — from modular decks that uses approximately five hundred plastic bottles within each module to float, to using recycled microplastic made out of three hundred single-used plastics every square metre as flooring tiles. With an ever-advancing technologies, the project imagines itself gradually developing according to time, generations, places and trends; A human-made ecosystem that celebrates cinematic advancements, challenges creativity, and healing the planet while simultaneously breathing live into its surrounding neighbourhood and the people of belfast.
