THE VON MINDEN SCHULENBURG, TEXAS
hotel renovation The Von Minden is a historic hotel located in Schulenburg, Texas. The historic theater space that was once the hotel’s main attraction, is transmfored into a series of immersive art exhibits intended to draw in locals and travelers from near and far. These exhibit spaces, as well as other spaces in the hotel, play at the core of the city’s history: it’s painted churches. My vision of the Von Minden aims to reinvent the idea of stenciling that Schulenburg’s first residents used to create religious experiences in their painted churches, into a more artistic and fun destination experience.

STENCIL PANEL OF AMMANNSVILLE BAPTIST CHURCH

FAUX WALL PANELING STENCIL
HOTEL GUEST ROOMS The project was first created by focusing specifically on the guest roooms located on the third floor. The design for the rooms were largely inspired by the stenciling of one of the city’s painted churches, Ammannsville Baptisit Church. The church featured stencils that mimicked materiality such as wall paneling. Throughout the space, this concept of faux materiaty is explored through a variety of stencil patterns.

EXHIBIT LOBBY In the lobby, stencil paneling is applied in a reverse manner compared to the guest rooms. Instead of stencils being applied to imitate a volume such as wall paneling, stenciling is applied to make the lobby appear as if it were a 2D sketch.

EXHIBIT THRESHOLD After exiting the lobby and walking through the double doors, a visitor enters the threshold space. The curves on the wallpaper not only distort space by making surfaces appear as if it they are rising and falling, but these curves also serve as a wayfinding tool to guide visitors into the main exhibit space.

EXHIBIT SPACE The the vertical surfaces of the exhibit space are adorned with the curve motif seen previous. Above the exhibition hall is a mezzanine that hosts an art gallery which showcases the work of local Schulenburg artists. 15

IMMERSIVE ROOMS Each individual immersive exhibit space is decorated in a variety of design themes that distort the reading of space and scale, similar to the curved motif in the main exhibit hall.

RESTAURANT In the hotel’s restaurant, the concept of faux materiality is explored. Soft materials, such as leather textile, are utilized to mimic hard materials, creating a sense of ambiguity and constatnt suprise in the space.

HOTEL LOBBY Surfaces in the front lobby are clad with wall paneling that derive from the painted stencil paneling featured in the guest rooms above. Light strips are applied to exaggerated extrusions of wall panels where when looked at from the right angle, make the extrusions appear as flat wall panels.

SURFACE TREATMENT The flooring of most of the bath house consists of a low relief tile to prevent slips and falls. A high relief relexology tile covers the circulation path surrounding the large pools providing a subtle foot message for those that walk along it. The curved walls of the bath house are made of corian.

Each learning station is composed of a layer of different colored felt panels that aid in the acoustic performance of the linear felt panels below it. Below these panels are curtains that enclose the stations. Terrazzo flooring covers the ground of most stations except the imagination, technology, as well as writing and math stations which are covered in a carpet dyed in a pattern that mimics terrazzo. 50
