The Eastern species of Gorilla (Gorilla Berengei) rules the jungle as the largest type of Gorilla. Always vigilant, they watch over their troop. Gentle yet formidable, reserved unless provoked, they never waver in their attention to detail. Surrounded by mountains and bracketed by the Rockfish River, Silverback Distillery embodies the spirit of Beringei. Our Beringei Vodka, Strange Monkey Gin, and Blackback White Whiskey are crafted with that same attention to detail. We are ever vigilant in creating the best tasting, most convenient and environmentally responsible product. Silverback Distillery produces chestthumping spirits using Virginia grains, pure Appalachian water and American craftsmanship.

Welcome! Year-round natural beauty, hallowed halls of history, spectacular arts and music and smallcity sophistication — Charlottesville has it all! It is easy to see why Orbitz.com recently named Charlottesville as one of the five places every American should visit! Here you can walk in the footsteps of Thomas Jefferson at his Monticello home and at his beloved University of Virginia — both are World Heritage Sites full of fascinating history and interesting architecture — and you can relax in the scenic countryside he so admired dotted with stunning vineyards, horse farms and Blue Ridge Mountain views. With so many wonderful places to enjoy here in Charlottesville, it can be tough to choose. So we went to the experts to find out what they think is the best of the best. We polled our Charlottesville Welcome Book readers, locals and tourists, about their favorite local businesses that exemplify wonderful customer service, from delicious restaurants, amazing boutiques, hot spots and cool clubs to wonderful resorts and awe-inspiring historical landmarks — and everything in between! Watch for the Welcome Book Winner logo on ads throughout this issue and in shop windows, and go to CharlottesvilleWelcomeBook.com to get the insider’s scoop on the best of everything our town has to offer. All of the award winners are highlighted in a special digital edition online, along with plenty of reader’s tips that will put you “in the know.” Throughout the fall, we’ll give away tickets to Charlottesville concerts, festivals and other events on our Facebook page at Facebook.com/CharlottesvilleWelcomeBook, so be sure to like us for a chance to win!

Monticello: Monticello/Thomas Jefferson Foundation, Inc.
Attractions & Museums Monticello in Fall Glory
From the moment you glimpse the iconic pillars of Monticello’s West Portico and the breathtaking displays of fall foliage, you know you are in the presence of a visionary mind. The author of the Declaration of the Independence, Thomas Jefferson dedicated his life to serving our country at its founding as the third United States president, Governor of Virginia and Secretary of State, among other roles. Jefferson was also an architect, scholar, musician, inventor and agriculturalist. Like the Taj Mahal and the Tower of London, Monticello is on the list of World Heritage Sites known the world over as cherished pieces of human history and of great universal value.
Those interested in the history of gardening at Monticello may glean insight into Jefferson’s passion with the two-hour Revolutionary Garden tour on Wednesdays and Saturdays through October. The tour includes a chance to meet the professional garden staff and participate in seasonal gardening activities, such as planting, harvesting and sampling crops ranging from asparagus to baby root vegetables. Be sure to stop by on September 13 for the eighth annual Heritage Harvest Festival on Monticello’s West Lawn to celebrate Jefferson’s “greatest service” and the amazing legacy he left behind as a gardener. Here you’ll taste delicious heirloom fruits and vegetables and learn about organic gardening and seed-saving. If you visit on September 12, you’ll be able to partake in the pre-festival workshops on such topics as “Propagating Fruit Trees,” “Year Round Bounty for the Home Gardener,” “Botanical Photography” and more. No matter when you tour, visiting Monticello is always a special event.

You’ll also learn more about Jefferson’s family and the enslaved community along Mulberry Row. Kids will love the Mountaintop Hands-On Activity Center, and everyone should set aside time to stroll the grounds of this famous plantation and admire the glorious gardens.

Attractions & Museums More Colonial Riches Michie Tavern by Robin Bethke
When visiting Monticello, make sure you save time for Ash Lawn-Highland, the elegant plantation home of President James Monroe, our fifth president and Jefferson’s good friend. Just 2.5 miles down the road from Thomas Jefferson’s “Little Mountain,” Ash Lawn is a working farm with more than 500 acres of land and a home for the performing arts. Visitors are invited to tour the historic presidential residence, explore the amazing boxwoods and learn more about President Monroe and his wife, Elizabeth. With lovely examples of early-American and Victorian decorative arts for visitors to admire, Ash Lawn-Highland provides another authentic view of 19th-century life. The plantation home looks much as it did when the Monroe family of five lived there, with classic French decorative touches, a display of White House china and a tiny child’s tea set in the nursery. Costumed interpreters demonstrate various colonial activities such as open-hearth cooking and candle making, giving guests an authentic feel for the era. Investigate the gardens, enjoy the peacocks, sheep and other livestock, and peer into outbuildings to get a historic view of colonial craftsmanship. On September 14, commemorate the 200th anniversary of “The Star-Spangled Banner” with various activities for children. October 19 is the annual Artisan Open House showcasing work by Virginia artists and artisans. For information, visit ashlawnhighland.org. For those seeing both Ash Lawn-Highland and Monticello on the same day, the perfect lunch break can be found at the 18th-century Michie Tavern, just down the road from Monticello, where you’ll feel like you’ve been swept back in time. The rustic restaurant features hearty Southern fare and servers in period attire. You might be invited to join in a Virginia Reel or maybe even glimpse one of the rumored ghosts! Ash Lawn: Jennifer Jones
Another presidential property in the area to explore is Montpelier, the home of James and Dolly Madison. While visiting the 2,650-acre estate and mansion, you’ll discover historic buildings and engaging exhibits, active archaeological dig sites, breathtaking gardens, cooking demonstrations and fun hands-on activities for the kids. Bring a picnic and enjoy the beautiful surroundings while learning about the man who was called the “Father of the Constitution” and the woman who inspired the title “First Lady.” Special events include the Constitution Day Celebration on September 20 and the Fall Fiber Festival and Sheep Dog Trials on October 4 and 5. See montpelier.org for more events. 16

Fun Especially for Families Where Families Play Charlottesville is packed with great activities for children, from parks and playgrounds to special seasonal attractions. Apple and pumpkin picking at area orchards and festivals are always a popular autumn pastime, offering lovely views of the changing leaves and often including hayrides, corn mazes, food, crafts, music and other fun. When in the Downtown area, hop aboard the free trolley for a fun way to get around! It loops around the UVA grounds to the Downtown Mall, where you can visit attractions that include indoor ice skating, ice cream parlors, toy stores and the popular Virginia Discovery Museum. Kids can play nearby at McGuffey Park as well for more outdoor fun. As Halloween approaches, the Albemarle Charlottesville Historical Society hosts Spirit Walk in the Downtown area, a spooky guided tour that includes a cast of costumed “ghosts to regale you with stories. Trick-or-Treat on the Lawn at UVA is another unique local tradition where costumed students hand out treats to hundreds of little ghosts and ghouls under the historic shadows of the Rotunda and near the room where Edgar Allen Poe once lived. To find out how local families play, visit CharlottesvilleFamily.com.

Outdoor Adventures The Great Outdoors The Charlottesville area’s claim to fame as one of the most beautiful regions of the country is clearly evident this time of year, as the glorious autumn leaves first show tinges of yellow and red and then change color in an amazing display. The famous fall foliage of the Blue Ridge Mountains is spectacular whether viewed from a leisurely car trip along Skyline Drive, a hike on a woodland trail in the Shenandoah National Park or from one of the many popular hot-air balloon rides that float peacefully above the stunning Albemarle countryside. All kinds of outdoor pursuits are plentiful here, catering to a range of interests. This fall, getting outside in Charlottesville can include championship golf at one of our gorgeous local courses, rock climbing or hiking a nature trail, tennis at a world-class facility, fishing at one of our local lakes, horseback riding and more. U.S. Bicycle Route 76, also known as the TransAmerica Route, rolls through Charlottesville, attracting thousands of cyclists to come enjoy the beautiful countryside on one of the two original cross-country bicycle routes. The city also boasts many bike lanes and pedestrian routes, making it an enjoyable place to explore. For a unique experience near Monticello, check out the serene SaundersMonticello Trail, which offers panoramic autumnal vistas. When you visit Charlottesville, you’ll quickly see how our vibrant arts scene has something for everyone! Experience engaging local performances and touring troupes this summer at venues large and small. From national acts at The Paramount Theater to lively performances from our smaller local theater companies such as Live Arts, the Four County Players and the American Shakespeare Center in Staunton — there is always a show going on. This fall, Four County Players presents “Black Comedy” beginning October 17 and “Little Women,” which opens November 21. Check fourcp.org for performance times. Live Arts has completed its theater renovations and has a great line-up for the fall including “The Sugar,” by local writer playwright Denise Stewart, October 31-November 22, and “Les Miserables,” starting December 5.
Just over the mountain, Staunton’s American Shakespeare Center presents the works of Shakespeare under the original staging conditions at the Blackfriars Playhouse. This fall’s season includes “Macbeth,” “Cyrano de Bergerac,” “The Comedy of Errors,” and Christopher Marlowe’s “Edward II.” Be sure to arrive early for the pre-show entertainment Shakespearian style. For something completely different, check Big Blue Door’s schedule at bigbluedoor.org for their improv and Telling True Stories shows. The Paramount Theater has comics from television’s “Last Comic Standing” on October 10 and Kidz Bop kid-focused singers are in town October 12. The Paramount will also be showing performances from London’s National Theatre including “A Streetcar Named Desire,” “Skylight” and two different showings of Benedict Cumberbatch in “Frankenstein,” once as the doctor and once as the monster. And Cirque du Soleil’s “Dralion” will be at the John Paul Jones Arena, October 22-26. Performances abound in Charlottesville! Check out the full schedule at CharlottesvilleWelcomeBook.com. For the lover of visual arts, Charlottesville’s many galleries, museums and artists’ studios, including the McGuffey Art Center, open their doors monthly for the First Fridays Artwalk, which makes for a lovely stroll on the Downtown Mall. And don’t miss the special exhibitions at the Fralin Museum of Art at the University of Virginia and the Kluge-Ruhe Aboriginal Art Collection. To read more about the area’s permanent art collections and the various studios and galleries around town, see page 26.

The Arts & Music Scene Art That Moves You Exuberant painter Jackson Pollock said that art is “all a big game of construction, some with a brush, some with a shovel, some choose a pen.” Whatever your favorite medium, galleries and artwork abound here. Each first Friday of the month, usually from 5 to 9pm (hours vary), local galleries and other venues displaying works of art open their doors for the popular First Friday Artwalk. A perfect place to start your walk is the McGuffey Art Center. This gallery space is full of artists at work in their studios accented by a gift shop that carries a variety of members’ art throughout the year. You can pick up a gallery guide to First Friday’s offerings as well as browse the 45 light-filled studios, three galleries and gift shop at McGuffey itself. The Fralin Museum of Art at the University of Virginia provides a sophisticated, high-tech home for the art contained within its historic walls. Exhibits include art from around the world dating from ancient times to the present. In addition to its permanent collection, the museum offers changing exhibitions, accompanied by related programs and publications. Fall exhibitions at the Fralin include “Realms of Earth and Sky,” Indian painting from the 15th to 19th centuries and photography from 1948 Harlem in Gordon Parks’s “The Making of an Argument.” Another unique local treasure of art is the Kluge-Ruhe Aboriginal Art Collection of the University of Virginia. With a full program of exhibits, lectures, research and education programs, the Kluge-Ruhe collection has a lot to offer the visitor who’s interested in indigenous artwork. A visit to the studio, gallery and printmaking workshop of landscape artist Frederick Nichols is just a short drive north to Barboursville. On the way, stop at Les Yeux du Monde just off Route 20. The gallery’s fall exhibits include “Picasso, Lydia and Friends” and new paintings by Anne Slaughter and Annie Harris Massie. Whether you’re merely appreciating or interested in purchasing, Charlottesville’s vibrant, robust art scene shouldn’t be missed. For more details, be sure to visit CharlottesvilleWelcomeBook.com.

The ACV has created the Monticello Artisan Trail, a map of destinations within the city of Charlottesville and throughout Albemarle and Nelson Counties that designates more than 80 regional attractions, including artisan studios, craft venues, orchards, vineyards, farms, restaurants, lodging and other points of interest. A diverse range of Central Virginia’s unique traditions and talents are represented on the trail — from a leather artist making custom personal and equestrian accessories by hand at a studio housed in an old train depot to a celebrated executive chef and decoy carver who hosts guests at a lovely property that includes a studio, a rustic cabin and a trout stream. As you travel along the trail, you’ll have the opportunity to meet some of these artisans and see them at work. Also be sure to drop in at some of the trail’s many businesses and craft venues that display and sell work from local ceramicists, weavers and furniture makers.

Best of the Brew Brews to Taste
RH
Charlottesville is proud to be home to a myriad of microbrewers, taphouses and establishments that specialize in crafting or carrying outstanding handmade beers and ciders. Thomas Jefferson took great interest in creating not only wines but beers as well. Monticello serves its own official beer: Monticello Reserve Ale, inspired by what Mr. Jefferson labored over and loved in a beer. Any visit wouldn’t be complete without ordering a mug of this heritage ale. Visitors and locals alike can now enjoy fabulous beers and historically crafted ciders from several local breweries and cideries. Many of these breweries and cideries include tasting rooms and restaurants, allowing guests to enjoy local brews while surrounded by great food, amazing music and stunning mountain views. The Brew Ridge Trail, which includes many of these destinations, starts in historic Charlottesville and meanders through scenic Albemarle and Nelson Counties. For a trail map and more info, visit BrewRidgeTrail.com. Additional local breweries and cideries are currently in the works, and an ultra premium vodka, gin, whiskey and bourbon distillery is expected to open to the public in the near future.

Vineyard Tours & Tastings
Jefferson Vineyards: Robin Bethke
Vineyards Bountiful & Beautiful Thomas Jefferson dreamt that Virginia wines would one day be plentiful and held in high regard, and today’s local vintners have accomplished that by producing wonderful award-winning wines. The Monticello American Viticultural Area (AVA), which includes Albemarle and surrounding counties, encompasses more than half of Virginia’s wine country and contains more than 1,000 acres of stunning vineyards. Vineyards in our Monticello AVA benefit from a natural east-southeast exposure and warm summer temperatures. Now the fifth largest wine-producing state in the country, Virginia has received both national and international acclaim for its wines. More than 20 local vintners offer up tastings from the lightest, lemoniest Pinot Grigio to the deepest, richest Merlot. Wine festivals bring thousands of visitors who come to taste the variety of flavors, enjoy local music and take in the glorious country views. In addition, many wineries offer tours, barrel and vertical flight tastings, multicourse wine-pairing meals and special events for connoisseurs and novices alike.

Vineyard Tours & Tastings
Getting out to experience the vineyards is easy, as all major roads are marked with the grape “Tours” signs, helping wine lovers navigate their way throughout the country roads. Central Virginia is so picturesque that an unplanned detour can be a lovely way to explore a part of the region you may not have discovered otherwise; for those who like to make an itinerary and stick to it, it might be gratifying to know that many scenic drives offer a cluster of vineyards within easy distance of each other. See the Regional Wine Trail map on page 48 to find your way around the Monticello AVA. We suggest packing a picnic lunch to enjoy al fresco on the grounds of your favorite vineyard with wine bythe-glass or a bottle purchased from the tasting room. Many vineyards also offer meat, cheese and baguette platters for snacking. Varieties special to the Monticello AVA include Cabernet Franc, Norton and Viognier. Cabernet Franc, lighter than a Cabernet Sauvingnon, tends to have peppery aromas and can include hints of tobacco, plum or violets. The native North American Norton, another red, is deeply colored and might have notes of coffee and bittersweet chocolate. Viognier is a white variety that gives off floral or fruity aromas but is typically a dry, or slightly off-dry wine. Whatever your palette desires — flowery, fruity, smoky, light — you’re sure to find it here.
Drink local, eat local, and taste the Best of Virginia Wines.

Dining Room at Monticello: Monticello/Sequoia Design
Jefferson’s Love of Food & Wine Thomas Jefferson was sometimes called “America’s first wine expert” due to his extensive experimentation in viticulture and enology. Be sure to check out Monticello’s vineyards near the extensive vegetable garden and the restored wine cellar in the passage beneath the house.
A platform above the brick floor allows visitors entry to the wine cellar to see what it looked like during Jefferson’s retirement years in the first part of the 19th century. Try out the model dumbwaiter in the “Crossroads” exhibit to see if you could have transported bottles of wine upstairs to guests without mishap! Afterwards, stop by the dining room to examine Jefferson’s original dumbwaiter, which has been restored to its original working condition. A spectacular sight awaits visitors in the dining room, which features walls painted a brilliant Thank You Charlottesville for voting us a Winner in the Best Hotel Restaurant category! 2 0 1 4

chrome yellow. The color — which replaced the Wedgewood blue that inspired so many homeowners across the country — is not so new. It was chosen by Jefferson around 1815 to grace the walls that set the scene for many formal dinners, where rice soup, mutton and even a new treat — ice cream! — was served. The dining-room restoration was sponsored by Polo Ralph Lauren and marked the first collaboration with Monticello curators and archaeologists with regards to the dining-room ceramics. Excavations showed that, in Jefferson’s retirement years, the family most often dined on pearlware, an English earthenware similar to porcelain but not as expensive. A set of green, shell-edged pearlware now graces the dining room, on loan from The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. Virginia is considered the birthplace of American wine. While Jefferson’s desire to have great wines locally available was never fulfilled during his lifetime, thanks to his unrelenting pursuits we can all now raise our glasses and revel in his dream come to fruition. To ensure that this dream continues, the Thomas Jefferson Foundation has partnered with Piedmont Virginia Community College to create a training vineyard on Montalto, Jefferson’s “high mountain” overlooking Monticello. Congratulations on choosing Charlottesville as your new home! Nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, your new community is known for year-round natural beauty and small-city sophistication. Charlottesville has received countless accolades in recent years for a variety of reasons — from its delicious, locally sourced restaurants to its active, sports-centric community. USA Today recently featured Charlottesville as a great place to invest in a home. “Take one of the nation’s quintessential college towns, throw in a big slice of American history, add golf courses and wineries, set it all in prime horse country, and the result is Charlottesville,” says Larry Olmsted for USA Today. We couldn’t agree more! You’ll find that locals go out of their way to make you feel at home here — whether it’s with a simple smile as you pass one another on the Downtown Mall or by providing detailed directions to the nearest hiking trail to enjoy the spectacular fall leaves. Now that you know the best places in town to celebrate your move to the area, check out the list to the right for the nitty gritty details of getting settled in your new home. We welcome you!

Newcomer ewcomer’ ’ss SSpecial pecial SSection ection N
The University of Virginia is a bastion of tradition founded by Thomas Jefferson, the most popular man in town. Those who are fond of him often refer to him as TJ or Mr. Jefferson. Whether you’re preparing to enter its hallowed halls for a degree or enjoying a weekend in town, here is your guide to local lingo. We proudly cheer on our Orange and Blue, “The Cavaliers” — “Cavs” for short or “Wahoos.” What’s a Wahoo? Legend has it that Washington & Lee baseball fans dubbed the UVA players “wahoos” during their fierce in-state rivalry back in the 1890s. By 1940, “Wahoos” was in general use to denote the University students or events relating to them. The abbreviated “Hoos” sprang up later in student newspapers. The area on which UVA sits is called “Grounds,” not “campus,” and freshmen here are called “first-years.” The large, domed building with Mr. Jefferson’s great statue is the Rotunda. It faces a huge grass courtyard known as “The Lawn,” surrounded by historic residences that are still coveted student and faculty residences. From the steps of the Rotunda you can see “The Corner,” the area located at the intersection of University Avenue and the central entrance to UVA, the Honor Gate. Always abustle, the Corner has a great selection of casual restaurants with college prices and trendy shops that give it a cool vibe.

“That good old song of Wa-Hoo-Wa — We’ll sing it o’er and o’er!” Fans of the University of Virginia’s Cavaliers football team know this refrain well, as it gets sung with rousing spirit each time the Wahoos score a touchdown. With seven home football games this fall, there ought to be plenty of chances for fans to sing their support in good ol’ Charlottesville style!

The Rotunda at UVA is closed for renovations until summer 2016, but you can still stroll the grounds on your own with a self-guided tour. Designed by Jefferson after the Pantheon in Rome, the Rotunda sits majestically on one end of the Lawn and was the original site of the school’s library. The Academical Village flanks the Rotunda and surrounds the rectangular Lawn. The village consists of 10 pavilions, each of which traditionally housed faculty and held classrooms. The larger pavilions are linked by 54 smaller, single-student rooms. Be sure to stroll through the beautiful pavilion gardens and check out the self-supporting serpentine walls, designed by Jefferson. The S-shape allows for the wall to be only one-brick thick and mostly selfsupporting, as well as offering alcoves for beautiful trees and colorful flowers in these classically designed gardens. The University Chapel is another must-see, though it wasn’t part of the original plans for the school. This beautiful stone chapel was a late addition to the University, built in 1889. While no longer used for services, it is still a popular place for weddings. (Bookings are chosen by lottery a year in advance so, if you’re interested — plan early!) To prevent parking frustration, consider using the two parking garages open to visitors at an hourly rate: the Central Grounds garage on Emmet Street (located underneath the University Bookstore and near the Lawn) and the Culbreth Road garage (convenient for visiting the Fralin Museum of Art or attending a play at Culbreth Theatre).

Becoming a Local Why Not Retire Here?
N ewcomer ’ s S pecial S ection
With temperate climates, beautiful scenery, expert medical care and a thriving cultural environment, it should come as no surprise that Charlottesville is a popular retirement location. Learning institutions such as Piedmont Virginia Community College and UVA’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) offer courses to suit all interests — “Understanding Opera” and “Genetics Then and Now” are two recent OLLI classes — and its outings have included adventures in Memphis, Greece and Brazil. Many local gyms and fitness facilities also offer senior classes. And, the golf courses, tennis courts and walking trails are very popular, too. Where to Retire magazine recently named Charlottesville as one of the country’s “Dynamic Locales For Walkable Living.” Plus, there are many rewarding volunteer opportunities available locally, and our award-winning Senior Center has a great mix of programs and travel choices, such as a jaunt to Nashville or a trip to Ireland. Charlottesville is also proud to be home to two great medical centers, the University of Virginia Health System and Martha Jefferson Hospital, both offering outstanding health care on the cutting edge of medicine. With the Charlottesville Albemarle Airport as a convenient gateway to a world of destinations and the coast only a couple of hours away, it’s no wonder Money Magazine rated Charlottesville as the #2 place to retire young!

If you treat your furry friends like family, you’ll fit right in here! With outstanding veterinarian care, pet-friendly hotels and outings and extensive outdoor parks and trails, Charlottesville is the ideal location for those with pets. Take a stroll along the brick-paved Downtown Mall, where your pup will be happy to find refreshment at the many water bowls shop owners place outside of their stores just for this purpose. During the warm months, well-behaved pets are allowed to join their owners in the outdoor seating areas of some of the area’s finest restaurants. Be sure to take your pooch to one of the local dog parks where they can frolic off-leash. Darden Towe Park, Azalea Park and Chris Greene Lake Park all include areas specific for dogs. While pets are allowed within nearby Shenandoah National Park, there are some trails where pets are prohibited, so be sure to check nps.gov/shen before you head out on your hike. There are also plenty of wineries in the area that are happy to accommodate owners and their pets, and some vineyards even host special pet-friendly events like Keswick Vineyards’ “Yappy Hours” on Sundays, where visitors can bring their pets and check out lovable animals available for adoption through local shelters.

Becoming a Local How It All Started
N ewcomer ’ s S pecial S ection
Robin Bethke
Charlottesville, named for Queen Charlotte Sophia of England and founded in 1762, is an inspiring setting to call home, as is the surrounding Albemarle County, named in honor of William Anne van Keppel. He was the second Earl of Albemarle and served as Governor General of the county from 1734 to 1735. We’re in the center of Virginia, surrounded by gentle rivers, rolling green pastures, mild seasons and an easy two-anda-half-hour drive to Washington, D.C. One reason Charlottesville has so many transplanted residents is that it’s a small city — just over 10.4 square miles, with 43,500 residents — but it has the trappings of a big one. Musical acts and dramatic performances, fine dining, lovely shops — all are available in abundance. Covering 726 square miles, the county’s population is more than double that of the city, at about 100,500. Both city and county are fascinating places to explore and wonderful locales to call home, and we welcome you!
