Welcome! Year-round natural beauty, hallowed halls of history, spectacular arts and music and smallcity sophistication — Charlottesville has it all! It is easy to see why Orbitz.com recently named Charlottesville as one of the five places every American should visit! Here you can walk in the footsteps of Thomas Jefferson at his Monticello home and at his beloved University of Virginia — both are World Heritage Sites full of fascinating history and interesting architecture — and you can relax in the scenic countryside he so admired dotted with stunning vineyards, horse farms and Blue Ridge Mountain views. With so many wonderful places to enjoy here in Charlottesville, it can be tough to choose. So we went to the experts to find out what they think is the best of the best. We polled our Charlottesville Welcome Book readers, locals and tourists, about their favorite local businesses that exemplify wonderful customer service, from delicious restaurants, amazing boutiques, hot spots and cool clubs to wonderful resorts and awe-inspiring historical landmarks — and everything in between! Watch for the Welcome Book Winner logo on ads throughout this issue and in shop windows, and go to CharlottesvilleWelcomeBook.com to get the insider’s scoop on the best of everything our town has to offer. All of the award winners are highlighted in a special digital edition online, along with plenty of reader’s tips that will put you “in the know.” Throughout the winter, we’ll give away tickets to Charlottesville concerts, festivals and other events on our Facebook page at Facebook.com/CharlottesvilleWelcomeBook, so be sure to like us for a chance to win!

Monticello: Theresa N. White

Attractions & Museums Monticello in Spring Glory

From the moment you glimpse the iconic pillars of Monticello’s West Portico, you know you are in the presence of a visionary mind. The author of the Declaration of the Independence, Thomas Jefferson, dedicated his life to serving our country at its founding as the third U.S. president, governor of Virginia and Secretary of State, among other roles. Jefferson was also an architect, scholar, musician, inventor and agriculturalist. Like the Taj Mahal and the Tower of London, Monticello is a World Heritage Site, known internationally as a cherished piece of human history and of great universal value. The highlight of the spring season is Historic Garden Week, with special events at Monticello April 18-25 (see pages 28-31 for more details). For a more in-depth look at the history of the estate, don’t miss Monticello’s TOM Talks — a series of talks featuring distinguished speakers on topics related to all facets of Monticello and Jefferson. Beginning in May, Monticello offers two special opportunities for visitors. Enjoy the tranquility of Monticello after closing time and savor the beautiful sunset from your unique vantage point in the Dome Room with the Monticello Sunset Pass, or plant, harvest and sample crops ranging from asparagus to baby root vegetables on an in-depth and experiential look at Monticello’s vibrant vegetable and fruit gardens on the Revolutionary Garden Tour. Schedule your tours and discover other special events at monticello.org.

`

Touring Tip: Purchase the Monticello Neighborhood Pass to get

More Historic Riches

Ash Lawn-Highland: Jennifer Jones

When visiting Monticello, make sure you save time for Ash Lawn-Highland, the plantation home of President James Monroe, our fifth president. Just two-and-a-half miles down the road from Thomas Jefferson’s “Little Mountain,” Ash Lawn-Highland is a historic presidential residence and working farm with more than 500 acres of land. Visitors are invited to tour the residence with a costumed guide, explore the amazing boxwood gardens and learn more about President Monroe and his wife, Elizabeth. For those seeing both Ash Lawn-Highland and Monticello on the same day, the perfect lunch break can be found at the 18th-century Michie Tavern, just down the road from Monticello. This rustic restaurant features hearty Southern fare and servers in period attire. Another area presidential property well worth exploring is Montpelier, the home of James and Dolley Madison. While visiting the 2,650-acre estate and mansion you’ll discover historic buildings and engaging exhibits, active archaeological digs, breathtaking gardens and fun, hands-on activities for the kids. Enjoy the beautiful surroundings while learning about the “Father of the Constitution” and the woman who inspired the title “First Lady.”

Fun Especially for Families

Virginia Discovery Museum: Jennifer Jones

Where Families Play A fun way for families to see Charlottesville is to hop aboard the free trolley and ride around downtown and the University of Virginia’s Corner. The trolley stops at specially marked bus stops every 15 minutes, so getting on and off for adventures and exploration is easy.

For touring on foot while enjoying the beautiful spring weather, join one of the Albemarle Charlottesville Historical Society’s walking tours. These terrific tours are offered every Saturday starting in April, or you can take a self-guided tour other days. You will be regaled with tales about life in the early days of Charlottesville and learn of famous local heroes, including explorers Lewis and Clark who started their amazing journey of discovery right here. The University of Virginia also offers a wonderful walking tour starting at the Pantheon-inspired Rotunda, or you can pick up a map and set your own pace with a self-guided stroll. Bring a picnic to enjoy on The Lawn, find Edgar Allan Poe’s room and relax in the Pavilion Gardens.

If you’re looking for outdoor play, the McGuffey Park near The McGuffey Art Center is an easy walk from the Downtown Mall. This lovely little park is newly renovated and packed with fun. Or, for outdoor play with stunning world-famous views and nature of the wild kind, visit Shenandoah National Park, a short 30-minute drive away.

McGuffey Park: Betsy Hamilton

Families of young children won’t want to miss the Virginia Discovery Museum on the Historic Downtown Mall. In addition to the exciting games, learning exhibits and building stations, this children’s museum offers its visitors the chance to explore Charlottesville in miniature. Little C’Ville, the museum’s newest exhibit, includes a mini bread bakery, Paramount Theater and post office, and a Pollination Station and Bee Hive sponsored by CharlottesvilleFamily. Children can, with the help of their imagination and the play stations, cook, learn about the importance of bees, put on a stellar performance, deliver letters and more!

To find out more about how local families play, log on to CharlottesvilleFamily.com or pick up a free copy of CharlottesvilleFamily magazine — available all around town — for the area’s most extensive calendar of local events and festivals just for families!

The Arts & Music Scene Art That Moves You Exuberant painter Jackson Pollock said that art is “all a big game of construction, some with a brush, some with a shovel, some choose a pen.” Whatever your favorite medium, galleries and artwork abound here. Each first Friday of the month, local galleries and other venues displaying works of art open their doors for the popular First Friday Artwalk. The University of Virginia’s Fralin Museum of Art provides a sophisticated, high-tech home for the art contained within its historic walls. Exhibits include art from around the world dating from ancient times to the present. In addition to its permanent collection, the museum offers changing exhibitions, accompanied by related programs and publications. Spring exhibitions at the Fralin include Lucian Freud’s Etchings and a compilation of Figures for the Soul. Another unique local treasure of art is the Kluge-Ruhe Aboriginal Art Collection of the University of Virginia. With a full program of exhibits, lectures, research and education programs, the Kluge-Ruhe collection has a lot to offer the visitor who’s interested in indigenous artwork. A visit to the studio, gallery and printmaking workshop of landscape artist Frederick Nichols is just a short drive north to Barboursville. On the way, stop at Les Yeux du Monde just off Route 20. This spring’s exhibits include Susan Bacik’s Constructed Meditations. On May 9 and 10, enjoy a day of the best local entertainment, crafts and art at the Crozet Arts and Crafts Festival, held in expansive tents, come rain or come shine, on the grounds of Claudius Crozet Park, a short drive west of Charlottesville. Dozens of vendors participate, so there’s sure to be something for everyone. Whether you’re merely appreciating or interested in purchasing, Charlottesville’s vibrant, robust art scene shouldn’t be missed. For more details, be sure to visit CharlottesvilleWelcomeBook.com.

On Saturday, April 18, Morven, a magnificent 19th-century estate built in the late-Georgian and Federal style that is on the National Register of Historic Places, will open its doors for one day only. A part of the Historic Garden Week since it began over 80 years ago, Morven has selected antiques, Oriental rugs and documentary reproductions that complement the elegant wallpapers, carpets and fabrics. The grounds of this 7,400-acre estate contain unusual trees, including a pair of Osage oranges, the state champion Chinese chestnut and a lovely dove tree. On April 19 and 20, enjoy tours of four stunning Albemarle County properties. The current owners of Bloomfield, a private residence that at various points has served as a school, have restored the 1849 continued next page 30 6th Annual Grace Church

UVA Pavilion Garden Wall: Dan Addison/UVA Public Affairs

Jeffersonian-style home to its former glory. The gardens boast original stackedstone walls, large ancient American boxwood hedges, lush perennial beds, specimen trees, and a beautiful pool with breathtaking views. Unforgettable Blue Ridge views can also be seen from Verulam Farm, at the foot of Ragged Mountain. This 1939 manor home was designed by UVA alum Marshall Wells, known for using intricate moldings, Rockingham slate roofs and reclaimed “beehive” brick as well as for the blending of indoor and outdoor spaces. Landscape architect Charles Gillette designed the enchanting classical gardens, with their breezeways and brick paths. The owner has established a small heritage orchard and a nut walk leading to the woods. The gardens at a home on Dick Woods Road just north of Ragged Mountain and at Foxhaven are also on the itinerary. The 35-acre Dick Woods property includes a lovely modern home at the end of a tree-lined drive, sited to capture optimal views. Visitors will be delighted by “Limelight” Hydrangea standards; a long, brightly colored perennial garden; a stone-edged terrace with a wisteria-covered pergola, perennial beds and an open, double-sided fireplace; and a mowed nature walk path. Foxhaven, a sprawling 200-acre farm recently purchased by UVA, is under renovation. The gardens and trails were established by the former owners, who nurtured an eclectic mix of plant life among woodland gardens, perennial beds, a cottage garden and shaded pathways bordered with bulbs.

Festivals & Events Festival of the Book Each March, Charlottesville celebrates one of our favorite pastimes with a unique ode to literature during the Virginia Festival of the Book. Its mission is to bring together writers and readers and to promote and celebrate books, reading, literacy and literary culture — all held dear in our community.

Celebrating its 20th year, the festival is the largest gathering of authors (many of them our own local notables) and readers in the mid-Atlantic region. This event is so big, in fact, that the festival can neither be held during a single day nor under a single roof. It’s spread across 50 different locations, in and around town, over the course of five days! This week of close to 150 events — ranging from fiction and poetry to Virginia history and current affairs, from culture and music to photography and creativity, and more — is hosted by the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities. The Festival of the Book draws an audience from far and wide, so make reservations early for the March 18-22 event. For a full schedule of events, a list of speakers and more details, visit vabook.org.

Best of the Brew Breweries to Taste Charlottesville is proud to be home to a myriad of microbrewers, taphouses and establishments that specialize in crafting or carrying outstanding handmade beers and ciders. Thomas Jefferson took great interest in creating not only wines but beers and ciders as well. In 1815 he wrote, “I am lately become a brewer for family use.” Monticello, in conjunction with our own homegrown Starr Hill Brewery, recently crafted an artisanal beer: Monticello Reserve Ale. This Official Beer of Monticello is inspired by what Mr. Jefferson labored over and loved in a beer. Any visit wouldn’t be complete without ordering a bottle of this heritage ale, which can be found at a variety of local restaurants and beer and wine shops. In addition to Jefferson’s home-brewed beer, hard cider was another everyday table drink at Monticello made from apples grown on site. One local cidery uses Jefferson’s favorite variety continued next page 40

Best of the Brew of apple, the Albemarle Pippin, to create a lovely hard cider that rounds out the range of beverages we’re proud to call locally made. Another cidery has begun making a delightful perry, a fermented pear juice, as well. Exploring the area’s ten breweries and four cideries is a wonderful way to spend a spring afternoon or evening. The Brew Ridge Trail, which features a variety of the area’s local breweries, starts in historic Charlottesville and meanders through scenic Albemarle and Nelson counties. Easily accessible by car, there are many local limousine and taxi companies that offer special rates for tours of the trail. A map of the trail and more details about each stop can be found online at BrewRidgeTrail.com. Our local breweries have taken the craft brewing world by storm, with medals at the country’s top beer festivals and nationwide accolades. Some breweries have opened restaurants on site, so now visitors and locals alike can imbibe these fabulous beers and historically crafted ciders while enjoying great food, amazing music and stunning mountain views. Additional local breweries and cideries are currently in the works, so check back for updates in the future.

Virginia also has a long history of whiskey distilleries. The distillery at George Washington’s home Mount Vernon (in Northern Virginia) is still in operation and was once the largest in America, producing 11,000 gallons of whiskey in 1799. In addition to the distillery at Mount Vernon, whiskey lovers can tour a distillery in Sperryville (about 50 miles north of Charlottesville) and visit two Nelson County distilleries making local craft vodka, gin, and bourbon. Spirits are high for the future of Virginia spirits. A few times a year, local, regional and national breweries come together for our very popular beer festivals. These events are a great way to sample many different beers and ciders side by side. The festivals usually also host the best food trucks Charlottesville has to offer. These impressive beer and cider offerings are part of the vibrant local food movement in the Charlottesville area, which supports numerous vineyards and farms, too. These locally owned businesses give Charlottesville a distinctive flavor and preserve its stunning landscapes.

Afton Mountain Vineyards: Jennifer Jones

Vineyard Tours & Tastings Vineyards Bountiful & Beautiful

Thomas Jefferson dreamt that Virginia wines would one day be plentiful and held in high regard, and today’s local vintners have accomplished that by producing wonderful, award-winning wines. The Monticello American Viticultural Area, which includes Albemarle and the surrounding counties, encompasses more than half of Virginia’s wine country and contains more than 1,000 stunning acres. Now the fifth-largest wine-producing state in the country, Virginia has received both national and international acclaim for its wines. Several dozen local wineries offer up tastings from the lightest, lemoniest Pinot Grigio to the deepest, richest Merlot. (See the Regional Wine Trail map on page 44.) Our region’s many boutique wineries offer a lovely selection of wines to share with friends and family, perfect for garden parties and other springtime celebrations. Spring Wine Festivals

At the Wine Festival at Monticello (June 20), you’ll enjoy the spring’s splendor while strolling the West Lawn much as Jefferson did. Walk the restored vineyards and meet winemaker Gabriele Rausse. While there, tour Jefferson’s home, enjoy the live music and see the garden in full bloom all while tasting wines from locally produced Virginia vineyards. The Montpelier Wine Festival (May 2 & 3) is a premier spring event as well, held at the lifelong home of James Madison. This annual festival offers distinctive arts and crafts, a sampling of specialty foods, live music, children’s entertainment, kite making classes and tastings. On April 11, cap off a delighful trip to the Historic Downtown Mall by tasting wines from around the Commonwealth at the nTelos Wireless Pavilion during the Taste of Monticello Wine Trail event. Wine & Dine Jefferson Style

Dining Room at Monticello: Monticello/Sequoia Design

Jefferson’s Love of Food & Wine Thomas Jefferson was sometimes called “America’s first wine expert” due to his extensive experimentation in viticulture and oenology. Be sure to check out Monticello’s restored wine cellar in the passage beneath the house.

A platform above the brick floor allows visitors entry to the wine cellar to see what it looked like during Jefferson’s retirement years in the first part of the 19th century. Try out the model dumbwaiter in the “Crossroads” exhibit to see if you could have transported bottles of wine upstairs to guests without mishap! Afterwards, stop by the dining room to examine Jefferson’s original dumbwaiter, which has been restored to its original working condition.

A spectacular sight awaits visitors in the dining room, which features walls painted a brilliant chrome yellow. The color — which replaced the Wedgewood blue that inspired so many homeowners across the country — is not so new, it was chosen by Jefferson around 1815 to

grace the walls that set the scene for many formal dinners, where rice soup, mutton and even a new treat — ice cream — was served. The dining-room restoration was sponsored by Polo Ralph Lauren and marked the first collaboration with Monticello curators and archaeologists with regards to the dining-room ceramics. Excavations showed that, in Jefferson’s retirement years, the family most often dined on pearlware, an English earthenware similar to porcelain but not as expensive. A set of green, shell-edged pearlware now graces the dining room, on loan from The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation.

Virginia is considered the birthplace of American wine. While Jefferson’s desire to have great wines locally available was never fulfilled during his lifetime, thanks to his unrelenting pursuits we can all now raise our glasses and revel in his dream come to fruition. To ensure that this dream continues, the Thomas Jefferson Foundation has partnered with Piedmont Virginia Community College to create a training vineyard on Montalto, Jefferson’s “high mountain” overlooking Monticello. Visit monticello.org, for touring details and history.

Wine & Dine Jefferson Style Fresh Local Foods Charlottesville lies within the great and beautiful county of Albemarle, whose rich agricultural history and farm community is well-loved and supported by our many local restaurants. Well before locavores arrived in the headlines, many of our restaurants were already building their reputations on the quality of the local food they supplied to their grateful customers. Area chefs take great pride in using only the freshest local produce and products no matter how casual the menu, so you’re sure to find the ideal eatery for a hearty breakfast, a lovely lunch or a delicious dinner. The Charlottesville City Market — open April-November on Saturdays from 7am-12pm at the corner of Water and South Streets — is a popular place to find local food, from farm-fresh produce to delectable cinnamon buns. Other mid-week farmers markets can also found in and around the city: Check buylocalvirginia.org for days and times. It’s no wonder that Forbes Magazine recently named Charlottesville the “Locavore” Capital of the World and that Southern Living named Charlottesville one of the Top Ten Tastiest Towns in the South! Although Charlottesville is a small city, it has many big-city amenities, such as trendy and funky food trucks, many of which work with local farmers to get the best seasonal offerings available. From organic donuts to brick-oven pizza and international fare, these mobile restaurants can be usually be found at farmers markets, near breweries and at Charlottesville’s many outdoor festivals and concerts. To find the freshest local foods at locally sourced retailers and restaurants, check out CharlottesvilleWelcomebook.com.

Becoming a Local Welcome, Newcomers!

N ewcomer ’ s S pecial S ection

Congratulations on choosing Charlottesville as your new home! Nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, your new community is known for yearround natural beauty and small-city sophistication. Charlottesville has received countless accolades in recent years for a variety of reasons — from its delicious, locally sourced restaurants to its active, sports-centric community. USA Today recently featured Charlottesville as a great place to invest in a home. “Take one of the nation’s quintessential college towns, throw in a big slice of American history, add golf courses and wineries, set it all in prime horse country, and the result is Charlottesville,” says Larry Olmsted for USA Today. We couldn’t agree more! You’ll find that locals go out of their way to make you feel at home here — whether it’s with a simple smile as you pass one another on the Downtown Mall or by providing detailed directions to the nearest hiking trail to enjoy the spectacular spring blossoms. Now that you know the best places in town to celebrate your move to the area, check out the list to the right for the nitty gritty details of getting settled in your new home. We welcome you!

The Scoop on UVA

Newcomer ewcomer’ ’ss SSpecial pecial SSection ection N

The University of Virginia is a bastion of tradition founded by Thomas Jefferson, the most popular man in town. Those who are fond of him often refer to him as TJ or Mr. Jefferson. Whether you’re preparing to enter its hallowed halls for a degree or enjoying a weekend in town, here is your guide to local lingo. We proudly cheer on our Orange and Blue, “The Cavaliers” — “Cavs” for short or “Wahoos.” What’s a Wahoo? Legend has it that Washington & Lee baseball fans dubbed the UVA players “wahoos” during their fierce in-state rivalry back in the 1890s. By 1940, “Wahoos” was in general use to denote the University students or events relating to them. The abbreviated “Hoos” sprang up later in student newspapers. The area on which UVA sits is called “Grounds,” not “campus,” and freshmen here are called “first-years.” The large, domed building with Mr. Jefferson’s great statue is the Rotunda. It faces a huge grass courtyard known as “The Lawn,” surrounded by historic residences that are still coveted student and faculty residences. From the steps of the Rotunda you can see “The Corner,” the area located at the intersection of University Avenue and the central entrance to UVA, the Honor Gate. Always abustle, the Corner has a great selection of casual restaurants with college prices and trendy shops that give it a cool vibe.

We enjoy viable non-profit enterprises, commerce, suppliers, research businesses and agri-businesses. The University of Virginia and its graduate programs attract talented students with infectious energy and exciting ideas who are a tremendous resource for local business. UVA, along with Piedmont Virginia Community College and the Charlottesville/Albemarle Technical Education Center, also provides the area with above par secondary education opportunities. In fact, Luminosity.com ranked Charlottesville as the second smartest city in America in 2013! Major employers in the area include the University of Virginia, State Farm and the U.S. Department of Defense. Charlottesville also has a thriving small business community that provides our town with its unique vibe. Becoming a Local Why Not Retire Here?

N ewcomer ’ s S pecial S ection

With a temperate climate, beautiful scenery, expert medical care and a thriving cultural environment, it should come as no surprise that Charlottesville is a popular retirement location. Learning institutions such as Piedmont Virginia Community College and UVA’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) offer courses to suit all interests — “Understanding Opera” and “Genetics Then and Now” are two recent OLLI classes — and its outings have included adventures in Memphis, Greece and Brazil. Many local gyms and fitness facilities also offer senior classes. And, the golf courses, tennis courts and walking trails are very popular, too. Where to Retire magazine recently named Charlottesville as one of the country’s “Dynamic Locales For Walkable Living.” Plus, there are many rewarding volunteer opportunities available locally, and our award-winning Senior Center has a great mix of programs and travel choices, such as a jaunt to Nashville or a trip to Ireland. Charlottesville is also proud to be home to two great medical centers, the University of Virginia Health System and Martha Jefferson Hospital, both offering outstanding health care on the cutting edge of medicine. With the Charlottesville Albemarle Airport as a convenient gateway to a world of destinations and the coast only a couple of hours away, it’s no wonder Money Magazine rated Charlottesville as the No. 2 place to retire young!

And for those with school-age children, not only are the public school systems exceptional, but our area boasts more private-school opportunities per capita than most, offering everything from competitive college-prep programs (with boarding options) to schools based on the teachings of alternative leaders in education. Ever hear of the “McGuffey Reader,” one of the best-known early school books? A celebrated community leader and profound contributor to education, “McGuffey Reader” author William H. McGuffey spent the last 28 years of his life in Charlottesville, was a professor at UVA and is buried on the University Grounds. There’s no doubt that education is emphasized throughout our community. Learn all about Charlottesville’s educational opportunities at CharlottesvilleFamily.com.

Becoming a Local Pets Welcome!

N ewcomer ’ s S pecial S ection

If you treat your furry friends like family, you’ll fit right in here! With outstanding veterinarian care, pet-friendly hotels and outings and extensive outdoor parks and trails, Charlottesville is the ideal location for those with pets. Take a stroll along the brick-paved Downtown Mall, where your pup will be happy to find refreshment at the many water bowls shop owners place outside of their stores just for this purpose. During the warm months, well-behaved pets are allowed to join their owners in the outdoor seating areas of some of the area’s finest restaurants. Be sure to take your pooch to one of the local dog parks where they can frolic off-leash. Darden Towe Park, Azalea Park and Chris Greene Lake Park all include areas specific for dogs. While pets are allowed within nearby Shenandoah National Park, there are some trails where pets are prohibited, so be sure to check nps.gov/shen before you head out on your hike. There are also plenty of wineries in the area that are happy to accommodate owners and their pets, and some vineyards even host special pet-friendly events like Keswick Vineyards’ “Yappy Hours” on Sundays, where visitors can bring their pets and check out lovable animals available for adoption through local shelters.

Becoming a Local How It All Started

N ewcomer ’ s S pecial S ection

Holly Bittle

Charlottesville, named for Queen Charlotte Sophia of England and founded in 1762, is an inspiring setting to call home, as is the surrounding Albemarle County, named in honor of William Anne van Keppel. He was the second Earl of Albemarle and served as Governor General of the county from 1734 to 1735. We’re in the center of Virginia, surrounded by gentle rivers, rolling green pastures, mild seasons and an easy two-anda-half-hour drive to Washington, D.C. One reason Charlottesville has so many transplanted residents is that it’s a small city — just over 10.4 square miles, with 45,000 residents — but it has the trappings of a big one. Musical acts and dramatic performances, fine dining, lovely shops — all are available in abundance. Covering 726 square miles, the county’s population is more than double that of the city, at about 101,000. Both city and county are fascinating places to explore and wonderful locales to call home, and we welcome you!
