Barboursville Vineyard, by Robin Bethke

Kings Family Vineyards, by Robin Bethke

Welcome! Year-round natural beauty, hallowed halls of history, spectacular arts and music and smallcity sophistication — Charlottesville has it all! It is easy to see why Orbitz.com recently named Charlottesville as one of the five places every American should visit! Here you can walk in the footsteps of Thomas Jefferson at his Monticello home and at his beloved University of Virginia — both are World Heritage Sites full of fascinating history and interesting architecture — and you can relax in the scenic countryside he so admired dotted with stunning vineyards, horse farms and Blue Ridge Mountain views. With so many wonderful places to enjoy here in Charlottesville, it can be tough to choose. So we went to the experts to find out what they think is the best of the best. We polled our Charlottesville Welcome Book readers, locals and tourists, about their favorite local businesses that exemplify wonderful customer service, from delicious restaurants, amazing boutiques, hot spots and cool clubs to wonderful resorts and awe-inspiring historical landmarks — and everything in between! Watch for the Welcome Book Winner logo on ads throughout this issue and in shop windows, and go to CharlottesvilleWelcomeBook.com to get the insider’s scoop on the best of everything our town has to offer. All of the award winners are highlighted in a special digital edition online, along with plenty of reader’s tips that will put you “in the know.” Throughout the summer, we’ll give away tickets to Charlottesville concerts, festivals and other events on our Facebook page at Facebook.com/CharlottesvilleWelcomeBook, so be sure to like us for a chance to win!

Attractions & Museums Summering at Monticello From the moment you glimpse the iconic pillars of Monticello’s West Portico and the breathtaking displays of summer daylilies, you know you are in the presence of a visionary mind. The author of the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson dedicated his life to serving our country at its founding as the third United Monticello | Jennifer Jones States president, Governor of Virginia and Secretary of State, among other roles. Jefferson was also an architect, scholar, musician, inventor and agriculturalist. Like the Taj Mahal and Tower of London, Monticello is on the list of World Heritage Sites recognized as cherished pieces of human history and of great universal value. When you tour the home, his clever inventions abound, from the Great Clock in the hallway that ingeniously marks the days and hours with a pulley system to the polygraph copying machine he designed for his famous letters. This summer, visitors can enjoy seasonal outdoor tours featuring the property’s archaeological discoveries and a look at the experiences of the enslaved people who lived and labored on the Monticello plantation. Those interested in the history of gardening can join the two-hour Revolutionary Garden tour on Wednesdays and Saturdays through October. Families will enjoy special house tours all summer on the hour just for children plus the Mountaintop Activity Center with lots of hands-on fun. Don’t forget your fishing poles for Kids Go Fish Day on June 13, when kids fish for free in the Kemper Park Pond. For more family-friendly fun, come out on July 4th from 9:00am-12:00pm to celebrate the adoption of the Declaration of Independence at the home of the author himself. Monticello’s 53rd Independence Day and Naturalization Ceremony, where 3,000 people from around the world have taken the oath of citizenship since 1963, is the oldest continuous naturalization ceremony in the United States outside of a courtroom. Don’t miss the chance to enjoy music by local artists and listen to this year’s featured guest, yet to be announced. Past speakers included musician Dave Matthews, actress Tracy Ullman, and President George W. Bush. See monticello.org for details.

More Historic Riches

Ash Lawn-Highland, photo by Jennifer Jones

While visiting Monticello, make sure you save time for Ash Lawn-Highland, the plantation home of our fifth president, James Monroe. Just two-and-a-half miles down the road from Thomas Jefferson’s “Little Mountain,” Ash Lawn-Highland is a historic presidential residence and working farm with more than 500 acres of land. Visitors are invited to tour the residence with a costumed guide, explore the amazing boxwood gardens and learn more about President Monroe and his wife, Elizabeth.

For those seeing both Ash Lawn-Highland and Monticello on the same day, the 18th-century Michie Tavern offers the perfect lunch break, located just down the road from Jefferson’s home. This rustic restaurant features hearty Southern fare and servers in period attire. Another area presidential property well worth exploring is Montpelier, the home of James and Dolley Madison. While visiting the 2,650-acre estate and mansion you’ll discover historic buildings and engaging exhibits, active archaeological digs, breathtaking gardens and fun, hands-on activities for the kids. Enjoy the beautiful surroundings while learning about the “Father of the Constitution” and the woman who inspired the title “First Lady.”

The Arts & Music Scene Art & Theatre Charlottesville’s vibrant performing arts scene has something for everyone. With venues large and small in and around Charlottesville, there are countless opportunities to be entertained by talented performers and artists. Between venues like The Paramount, which attracts national productions, and our local theater companies like Live Arts, Play On!, the Four County Players, and the American Shakespeare Center, there is always a show to see! Young theatre fans can engage in an interactive experience by participating in the Missoula Children’s Theatre, which returns to The Paramount Theater this summer. Local youth will be cast in productions of “Sleeping Beauty” and “Aladdin” and perform the shows for the community at the end of the week. For the opera connoisseurs in town, the beloved Ash Lawn Opera will be presenting performances of “Madama Butterfly” and “My Fair Lady,” also at The Paramount Theater. The American Shakespeare Center in Historic Staunton presents the works of Shakespeare under the original staging conditions at the Blackfriars Playhouse. This summer’s season includes “Macbeth” and “Cyrano de Bergerac.” Another local theater company, Four County Players, will be presenting “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,” beginning July 24. Check fourcp.org for performance times. In addition to performance art, visual art also abounds in Charlottesville. A favorite summer event in town is the First Fridays Artwalk, in which Charlottesville’s many galleries, museums, and artists’ studios open their doors for visitors to stroll through and admire the work of local and regional artists. And be sure to check out the special exhibitions at the Fralin Museum of Art at the University of Virginia, the Kluge-Ruhe Aboriginal Art Collection, Les Yeux du Monde, and the Nichols Gallery and Annex. For more information about our area’s permanent art collections, see page 28.

The Arts & Music Scene Art That Moves You “What art offers is space-- a certain breathing room for the spirit,” says John Updike. Whatever your favorite medium, galleries and artwork abound here in Charlottesville, and our art scene is a wonderful way to nourish your mind and soul. Each first Friday of the month, local galleries and other venues displaying works of art open their doors for the popular First Friday Artwalk. The Fralin Museum of Art at the University of Virginia provides a sophisticated, high-tech home for the art contained within its historic walks. Exhibits include art from around the world dating from ancient times to the present. In addition to its permanent collection, the museum offers changing exhibitions, accompanied by related programs and publications. Summer exhibitions at the Fralin include “The Body in Motion,” “What is a Line?” and “A Portrait of the Artist, 1525-1825.” Another unique local treasure is the Kluge-Ruhe Aboriginal Art Collection of the University of Virginia, the only museum of Australian Aboriginal art in the U.S. With a full program of exhibits, lectures, research and education programs, the KlugeRuhe collection has a lot to offer the visitor who’s interested in indigenous artwork. This summer’s special exhibits include “Brothers,” a body of photographs by Indigenous Australian artist Tony Albert. Les Yeux du Monde is worth the short drive north on Route 20. The gallery hosts Richard Crozier June 12-July12, “Summer Scenes: Isabelle Abbot, Priscilla Whitlock” July 17-August 16, and Susan Mcalister August 21-September 20. As you explore Virginia’s wine country, be sure to visit The Nichols Gallery Annex, housed in a historic building in scenic Barboursville, which displays artwork by talented artists from throughout the mid-Atlantic region.

Boutiques & Specialty Shops

Locally Crafted Begin in downtown Charlottesville and drive on Route 250 to the country town of Crozet and beyond to discover more shopping districts and take in some beautiful scenery, too. Plan your itinerary with the help of the Artisans Center of Virginia (ACV) the state’s official nonprofit craft organization dedicated to promoting Virginia artisans. The ACV has created the Monticello Artisan Trail, a map of destinations within the city of Charlottesville and throughout Albemarle and Nelson Counties that designates more than 80 regional attractions, including artisan studios, craft venues, orchards, vineyards, farms, restaurants, lodging and other points of interest. A diverse range of Central Virginia’s unique traditions and talents are represented on the trail — from a leather artist making custom personal and equestrian accessories by hand at a studio housed in an old train depot to a celebrated executive chef and decoy carver who hosts guests at a lovely property that includes a studio, a rustic cabin and a trout stream. As you travel along the trail, you’ll have the opportunity to meet some of these artisans and see them at work. Also be sure to drop in at some of the trail’s many businesses and craft venues that display and sell work from local ceramic artists, weavers and furniture makers.

Best of the Brew Breweries to Taste Charlottesville is proud to be home to a myriad of microbrewers, taphouses and establishments that specialize in crafting or carrying outstanding handmade beers and ciders. Thomas Jefferson took great interest in creating not only wines but beers and ciders as well. In 1815 he wrote, “I am lately become a brewer for family use.” Monticello, in conjunction with our own homegrown Starr Hill Brewery, has crafted an artisanal beer: Monticello Reserve Ale. This Official Beer of Monticello is inspired by what Mr. Jefferson labored over and loved in a beer. Any visit wouldn’t be complete without ordering a bottle of this heritage ale, which can be found at a variety of local restaurants and beer and wine shops. In addition to Jefferson’s home-brewed beer, hard cider was another everyday table drink at Monticello made from apples grown on site. One local cidery uses Jefferson’s favorite variety

of apple, the Albemarle Pippin, to create a lovely hard cider that rounds out the range of beverages we’re proud to call locally made. Another cidery has begun making a delightful perry, a fermented pear juice, as well. Exploring the area’s ten breweries and four cideries is a wonderful way to spend a spring afternoon or evening. The Brew Ridge Trail, which features a variety of the area’s local breweries, starts in historic Charlottesville and meanders through scenic Albemarle and Nelson counties. Easily accessible by car, there are many local limousine and taxi companies that offer special rates for tours of the trail. A map of the trail and more details about each stop can be found online at BrewRidgeTrail.com. Our local breweries have taken the craft brewing world by storm, with medals at the country’s top beer festivals and nationwide accolades. Best of the Brew so now visitors and locals alike can imbibe these fabulous beers and historically crafted ciders while enjoying great food, amazing music and stunning mountain views. Additional local breweries and cideries are currently in the works, so check back for updates in the future. Virginia also has a long history of whiskey distilleries. The distillery at George Washington’s home Mount Vernon (in Northern Virginia) is still in operation and was once the largest in America, producing 11,000 gallons of whiskey in 1799. In addition to the distillery at Mount Vernon, whiskey lovers can tour a distillery in Sperryville (about 50 miles north of Charlottesville) and visit two Nelson County distilleries making local craft vodka, gin, and bourbon. Spirits are high for the future of Virginia spirits. A few times a year, local, regional and national breweries come together for our very popular beer festivals. These events are a great way to sample many different beers and ciders side by side. The festivals usually also host the best food trucks Charlottesville has to offer. These impressive beer and cider offerings are part of the vibrant local food movement in the Charlottesville area, which supports numerous vineyards and farms, too. These locally owned businesses give Charlottesville a distinctive flavor and preserve its stunning landscapes.

Vineyard Tours & Tastings

Vineyards Bountiful & Beautiful Thomas Jefferson dreamt that Virginia wines would one day be plentiful and held in high regard, and today’s local vintners have accomplished that by producing wonderful, award-winning wines. The Monticello American Viticultural Area, which includes Albemarle and the surrounding counties, encompasses more than half of Virginia’s wine country Afton Mountain Vineyards, photo by Jennifer Jones and contains more than 1,000 stunning acres. Now the fifth-largest wine-producing state in the country, Virginia has received both national and international acclaim for its wines. Several dozen local wineries offer up tastings from the lightest, lemoniest Pinot Grigio to the deepest, richest Merlot. (See the Regional Wine Trail map on page 44.) Our region’s many boutique wineries offer a lovely selection of wines to share with friends and family, perfect for garden parties and other summertime celebrations. Area vineyards also often host multi-course winepairing meals and special events for wine connoisseurs and novices alike. Be sure to check CharlottesvilleWelcomeBook.com for upcoming vineyard events.

Located in Madison, Virginia at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Early Mountain Vineyards comprises more than 300 acres of the historic Monticello Wine Trail. With its warm and inviting tasting room, picturesque outdoor spaces and breathtaking views, guests are welcomed to Early Mountain to enjoy the wines and linger for a palate pleasing experience.

Wine & Dine Jefferson Style

Dining Room at Monticello: Monticello/Sequoia Design

Jefferson’s Love of Food & Wine Thomas Jefferson was sometimes called “America’s first wine expert” due to his extensive experimentation in viticulture and oenology. Be sure to check out Monticello’s restored wine cellar in the passage beneath the house.

A platform above the brick floor allows visitors entry to the wine cellar to see what it looked like during Jefferson’s retirement years in the first part of the 19th century. Try out the model dumbwaiter in the “Crossroads” exhibit to see if you could have transported bottles of wine upstairs to guests without mishap! Afterwards, stop by the dining room to examine Jefferson’s original dumbwaiter, which has been restored to its original working condition.

A spectacular sight awaits visitors in the dining room, which features walls painted a brilliant chrome yellow. The color — which replaced the Wedgewood blue that inspired so many homeowners across the country — is not so new, it was chosen by Jefferson around 1815 to

grace the walls that set the scene for many formal dinners, where rice soup, mutton and even a new treat — ice cream — was served. The dining-room restoration was sponsored by Polo Ralph Lauren and marked the first collaboration with Monticello curators and archaeologists with regards to the dining-room ceramics. Excavations showed that, in Jefferson’s retirement years, the family most often dined on pearlware, an English earthenware similar to porcelain but not as expensive. A set of green, shell-edged pearlware now graces the dining room, on loan from The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation.

Virginia is considered the birthplace of American wine. While Jefferson’s desire to have great wines locally available was never fulfilled during his lifetime, thanks to his unrelenting pursuits we can all now raise our glasses and revel in his dream come to fruition. To ensure that this dream continues, the Thomas Jefferson Foundation has partnered with Piedmont Virginia Community College to create a training vineyard on Montalto, Jefferson’s “high mountain” overlooking Monticello. Visit monticello.org, for touring details and history.

Wine & Dine Jefferson Style Fresh Local Foods

D ining G uide

Charlottesville lies within the great and beautiful county of Albemarle, whose rich agricultural history and farm community is well-loved and supported by our many local restaurants. Well before locavores arrived in the headlines, many of our restaurants were already building their reputations on the quality of the local food they supplied to their grateful customers. Area chefs take great pride in using only the freshest local produce and products no matter how casual the menu, so you’re sure to find the ideal eatery for a hearty breakfast, a lovely lunch or a delicious dinner. The Charlottesville City Market — open April-November on Saturdays from 7am-12pm at the corner of Water and South Streets — is a popular place to find local food, from farm-fresh produce to delectable cinnamon buns. Other mid-week farmers markets can also found in and around the city: Check buylocalvirginia.org for days and times. It’s no wonder that Forbes Magazine recently named Charlottesville the “Locavore” Capital of the World and that Southern Living named Charlottesville one of the Top Ten Tastiest Towns in the South! Although Charlottesville is a small city, it has many big-city amenities, such as trendy and funky food trucks, many of which work with local farmers to get the best seasonal offerings available. From organic donuts to brick-oven pizza and international fare, these mobile restaurants can be usually be found at farmers markets, near breweries and at Charlottesville’s many outdoor festivals and concerts. To find the freshest local foods at locally sourced retailers and restaurants, check out CharlottesvilleWelcomebook.com.

Wine & Dine Jefferson Style Sophisticated Dining

D ining G uide

With more restaurants per capita than any city in America, Charlottesville offers a wide variety of high quality dining for every occasion. Local specialties such as asparagus, greens, meats, eggs and candies have inspired area chefs to create innovative menus for our food-loving community. In addition, the city offers traditional Southern fare with a unique twist, as classically trained chefs incorporate their own expertise from the upscale world of gastronomy. This influx of acclaimed chefs from New York City to San Francisco into Charlottesville, some of whom have worked in Michelin-starred restaurants, and the city’s farm-to-table movement promises tasteful and diverse cuisine to please any food connoisseur. Rather than requiring formal attire, Charlottesville restaurants are known for offering the comfort of a casual environment without sacrificing quality. Charlottesville’s Downtown Mall is a popular place to experience an exquisite meal and avoid the formalities of upscale dining, offering diverse options that range from classic American burger joints to trendy Parisian cuisine. This unique blend of quality and a relaxed atmosphere has not gone unnoticed, the 2015 James Beard Awards having recognized two Charlottesville chefs as semifinalists for Best Chef in the Mid-Atlantic and another local establishment for Best New Restaurant, the first in the city’s history.

Becoming a Local Welcome, Newcomers!

N ewcomer ’ s S pecial S ection

Congratulations on choosing Charlottesville as your new home! Nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, your new community is known for year-round natural beauty and small-city sophistication. Charlottesville has received countless accolades in recent years for a variety of reasons — from its delicious, locally sourced restaurants to its active, sports-centric community. USA Today recently featured Charlottesville as a great place to invest in a home. “Take one of the nation’s quintessential college towns, throw in a big slice of American history, add golf courses and wineries, set it all in prime horse country, and the result is Charlottesville,” says Larry Olmsted for USA Today. We couldn’t agree more! You’ll find that locals go out of their way to make you feel at home here — whether it’s with a simple smile as you pass one another on the Downtown Mall or by providing detailed directions to the nearest hiking trail to enjoy the spectacular summer blooms. Now that you know the best places in town to celebrate your move to the area, check out the list on page 65 for the nitty gritty details of getting settled in your new home. We welcome you!

Becoming a Local The Scoop on UVA

The University of Virginia is a bastion of tradition founded by Thomas Jefferson, the most popular man in town. Those who are fond of him often refer to him as TJ or Mr. Jefferson. Whether you’re preparing to enter its hallowed halls for a degree or enjoying a weekend in town, here is your guide to local lingo. We proudly cheer on our Orange and Blue, “The Cavaliers” — “Cavs” for short or “Wahoos.” What’s a Wahoo? Legend has it that Washington & Lee baseball fans dubbed the UVA players “wahoos” during their fierce in-state rivalry back in the 1890s. By 1940, “Wahoos” was in general use to denote the University students or events relating to them. The abbreviated “Hoos” sprang up later in student newspapers. The area on which UVA sits is called “Grounds,” not “campus,” and freshmen here are called “first-years.” The large, domed building with Mr. Jefferson’s great statue is the Rotunda. It faces a huge grass courtyard known as “The Lawn,” surrounded by historic residences that are still coveted student and faculty residences. From the steps of the Rotunda you can see “The Corner,” the area located at the intersection of University Avenue and the central entrance to UVA, the Honor Gate. Always abustle, the Corner has a great selection of casual restaurants with college prices and trendy shops that give it a cool vibe.

The Rotunda is one of Charlottesville’s most iconic structures, designed by Jefferson after the Pantheon in Rome. It sits majestically on one end of the Lawn and was the original site of the school’s library, each book said to have been handpicked by Jefferson himself. Although historical tours are not offered during the summer due to the closure of the Rotunda for renovations, you can stroll the grounds on your own to explore the Lawn and Academical Village. The village consists of 10 pavilions, each of which housed faculty and held classrooms for various subjects. The larger pavilions are linked by 54 smaller, single-student rooms. The two-year renovation project plans to update historical features and restore the Rotunda as the center of the University’s academic activity and student life, as Jefferson had originally envisioned. The Rotunda’s projected opening date is set for the summer of 2016. While the Rotunda is closed, be sure to stroll through the beautiful pavilion gardens and check out the self-supporting serpentine walls, designed by Jefferson. The design and shape are both aesthetic and functional. The S-shape allows for the wall to be only one-brick thick and mostly self-supporting, as well as offering alcoves for beautiful trees and colorful flowers in these classically designed gardens.

Becoming a Local The University Chapel is another must-see, though it wasn’t part of the original plans for the school. This beautiful stone chapel was a late addition to the University, built in 1889. While no longer used for services, it is still a popular place for weddings. (Bookings are chosen by lottery a year in advance so, if you’re interested — plan early!) The University of Virginia has also been home to a number of recognizable names over the years. Many writers have walked the grounds, including David Baldacci and Linda Fairstein. William Faulkner was UVA’s first Writer-in-Residence. Accordingly, the Special Collections Library has a significant collection of Faulkner’s personal papers and manuscripts, as well as one of Faulkner’s jackets! The school has also seen its fair share of media and entertainment personalities, such as Tina Fey and Katie Couric. Some other big names include Robert F. Kennedy, Tiki Barber and Charles T. Pepper, the namesake of the soft drink Dr Pepper. President Woodrow Wilson attended in 1879, but left due to health reasons. And it would be remiss not to mention the university’s most famous drop-out, Edgar Allan Poe!

embrace the possibility Whether it’s purchasing your first home or refinancing for a new kitchen, debt consolidation to make a fresh start, or to pay for a college education, Hal Johnson continues to help his neighbors finance their dreams. “Hal was responsive to our situation and went above and beyond professional expectations to guide us through the steps to refinance our house. To prevent parking frustration, here are a few tips to keep in mind while visiting the University of Virginia. First, there are two parking garages open to visitors at an hourly rate: the Central Grounds garage on Emmet Street (located underneath the University Bookstore and near the Lawn) and the Culbreth Road garage (convenient for visiting UVA’s Fralin Museum of Art or attending a play at Culbreth Theatre). UVA also offers a temporary parking permit for the lots around John Paul Jones Arena, ideal for folks visiting for a half-day or more.

Begin your neighborhood search with Belmont, a historic community within walking distance of Downtown, where you’ll find a mix of Victorian-style homes and adorable cottages with picket fences. Next, check out the charming neighborhoods of Rose Hill (close to Downtown) or Rugby Avenue (closer to the University of Virginia) and the surrounding area. Fifeville and Fry’s Spring neighborhoods are great options for those wanting a short commute to the UVA Medical Center. Subdivisions north and south of town provide family-friendly streets with neighborhood schools and pools.

Cutting-edge health care from area hospitals provides our community with excellent specialists in a variety of medical fields, and the presence of a teaching hospital helps make Charlottesville, named one of the Top 10 Healthiest Cities by Daily Finance, a sought-after destination. Seven programs at the University of Virginia Health System achieved Top 100 rankings in the 2014-2015 U.S. News and World Report “Best Hospitals” guide: Cancer, Diabetes & Endocrinology, Gynecology, Nephrology, Neurology & Neurosurgery, Orthopedics and Urology. The UVA Health System also takes pride in its innovative Heart Center and the state-of-the-art Emily Couric Clinical Cancer Center. Why Not Retire Here? With a temperate climate, beautiful scenery, expert medical care and a thriving cultural environment, it should come as no surprise that Charlottesville is a popular retirement location. Learning institutions such as Piedmont Virginia Community College and UVA’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) offer courses to suit all interests — “Understanding Opera” and “Genetics Then and Now” are two recent OLLI classes — and its outings have included adventures in Memphis, Greece and Brazil. Many local gyms and fitness facilities also offer senior classes. And, the golf courses, tennis courts and walking trails are very popular, too. Where to Retire magazine recently named Charlottesville as one of the country’s “Dynamic Locales For Walkable Living.” Plus, there are many rewarding volunteer opportunities available locally, and our award-winning Senior Center has a great mix of programs and travel choices, such as a jaunt to Nashville or a trip to Ireland. Charlottesville is also proud to be home to two great medical centers, the University of Virginia Health System and Martha Jefferson Hospital, both offering outstanding health care on the cutting edge of medicine. With the Charlottesville Albemarle Airport as a convenient gateway to a world of destinations and the coast only a couple of hours away, it’s no wonder Money Magazine rated Charlottesville as the No. 2 place to retire young!

Ever hear of the “McGuffey Reader,” one of the best-known early school books? A celebrated community leader and profound contributor to education, “McGuffey Reader” author William H. McGuffey spent the last 28 years of his life in Charlottesville, was a professor at UVA and is buried on the University Grounds. There’s no doubt that education is emphasized throughout our community. Learn all about Charlottesville’s educational opportunities at CharlottesvilleFamily.com.

Take a stroll along the brick-paved Downtown Mall, where your pup will be happy to find refreshment at the many water bowls shop owners place outside of their stores just for this purpose. During the warm months, well-behaved pets are allowed to join their owners in the outdoor seating areas of some of the area’s finest restaurants. Charlottesville, named for Queen Charlotte Sophia of England and founded in 1762, is an inspiring setting to call home, as is the surrounding Albemarle County, named in honor of William Anne van Keppel. He was the second Earl of Albemarle and served as Governor General of the county from 1734 to 1735. We’re in the center of Virginia, surrounded by gentle rivers, rolling green photo by Holly Bittle pastures, mild seasons and an easy two-anda-half-hour drive to Washington, D.C. One reason Charlottesville has so many transplanted residents is that it’s a small city — just over 10.4 square miles, with 45,000 residents — but it has the trappings of a big one. Musical acts and dramatic performances, fine dining, lovely shops — all are available in abundance. Covering 726 square miles, the county’s population is more than double that of the city, at about 101,000. Both city and county are fascinating places to explore and wonderful locales to call home, and we welcome you!
