Just Between Us… Our youngest is quite tall – we all are actually, so he comes by it honestly. It certainly can’t come from superior nutrition as we often joke. His last known veggie was eaten under desperate circumstances three days ago – trapped in the minivan and given a choice between carrots or near-certain starvation. Our other children are not nearly as picky, so this generally confirms what I learned shortly after the birth of our second child – each is their own very unique self. When the holidays roll around and it’s time to make gifts, we really see this uniqueness. Our oldest is a talented baker who presents us with treats like my favorite cinnamon rolls from Granny’s recipe that take hours and hours to make. She, like any good chef, prefers a clean and orderly kitchen. Our second daughter puts her whole artistic heart into coming up with the perfect gift from original illustrated stories to a calendar featuring photos of the pets. She will single-mindedly pursue that idea to perfection or bust with far less tidiness. Both the boys, being the youngest, are always full of surprises. So far this year, I’ve seen evidence of some sort of secret code board game that involves Monopoly tokens

in development. And of course with enough sweet tooths between them to put Candyland to shame, they most often can be found helping big sister bake dessert gifts (and by “help” I, of course, mean taste testing and spreading the frosting … pretty much everywhere). I do love that they are excited about giving, even if I’ve also been “given” a mess to clean in the process. Most often, they are the recipients of gifts. But it’s sure nice to see them realize that to give a gift born of their talent and interest can be the most rewarding gift of all.

Our family holidays don’t involve a lot of physical ‘presents’ but a lot of ‘presence’ from one another. A great way to be present as a family is to work on a project that serves our community. One of our favorite projects is to gather toys we do not use and donate them to the IRC. They have a cool store that new refugee kids can shop from (for free) for their new homes. Mama Rachel

This year, we filled four shoe boxes for Operation Shoebox, and we are making cards to deliver to a local nursing home. In addition, my daughter will be a “Santa to a senior” through her Girl Scout troop. Sam, mother of two During the holidays, we love baking together and making little goody bags to give out. We also go through our house for items to donate. Brittany, mother of 2-year-old boy We really enjoy the Toy Lift every year. It’s become a family tradition since the kids were born. They love handing the gifts to the volunteers and feel proud to help other kids enjoy the season. Ashley, Forest Lakes, mother of two

Deanna Gould Deanna Gould, Executive Director of Light House Studios, worked as a producer in America and Europe for 18 years prior to joining the nonprofit that brings Charlottesville’s youth together to make movies. Gould says, “Light House is similar to a production company, as there are different film projects in pre-production, production and postproduction, all happening at the same time.” She moved from London to Charlottesville with her husband and three sons in 2003, hoping to spend more time with her children while still using her filmmaking skills. What routine or habit helps you keep on top of life and work obligations? Exercise keeps me on top of life. If I’m too busy to fit it into my schedule, I get very grumpy. I wake up at 6 a.m. and work for an hour prior to waking up my boys. The quiet in the morning keeps me on top of work obligations and in planning my day. Raking for A Cause Over 200 volunteers braved the rainy weather on Saturday, November 7, at the Habitat for Humanity of Greater Charlottesville’s 3rd annual Rakea-Thon. Homeowners throughout Charlottesville and Albemarle County, who pledged a donation, received yard work in return from teams of volunteers comprised of local youth, college students and families. Youth United Leadership Team, a group of high school students from six local high schools, coordinated the event. The most successful Rake-a-Thon so far, the day brought in over $3,000 for Habitat’s housing projects.

DAYTRIPFun! Holiday Happenings at Busch Gardens Courtesy of Busch Gardens

Busch Gardens, a two-hour drive from Charlottesville, is hosting its annual Christmas Town event with over eight million lights this year. That’s at least 12 miles of lights to take in with the kids. But even before the sun goes down, there’s plenty to see and do in this amazing transformation of the theme park into a holiday wonderland. Stop by the Highlands Stables to see live sheep, horses and collies in their holiday menagerie. At Santa’s Workshop, the kids can see the inner workings of the North Pole and get a photograph with the man in red himself. His reindeer stables are also open for a peek. As the family walks along the Polar Pathway, visions of trees decorated with an array of lights will have the little ones pointing and amazed. Make sure to dress warmly for this outdoor excursion, and indulge in some hot chocolate along the route. For the theme park lovers, many of the rides will remain open, despite the cooler weather. For a view over the park’s transformation, take a turn on the skyride or the train. To continue with the holiday experience, sit down at one of the theme park’s eateries. Tickets in advance are necessary if you want to enjoy Santa’s Fireside feast, with cookies passed by Mrs. Claus herself. There are several shows, including an adaptation of Charles Dickens’ “Christmas Carol” and “Gloria,” a retelling of the first Christmas. The standout this year looks to be “’Twas That Night on Ice,” an all-new live performance on ice, starring figure skating champion Elvis Stojko.

Experiencing Christmases Past at the Frontier Culture Museum If you’re starting to sound like Charlie Brown this month, rallying against the increasing commercialism of the season, a trip to Staunton’s Frontier Culture Museum is an ideal way to explore a simpler time, and to squeeze in something educational without your kids noticing. The museum, just off of highway 81, takes holiday visitors on a tour of agrarian holiday traditions from a time before electric lights and blow-up lawn decorations. In December, the museum offers nighttime lantern tours that allow visitors to walk through the property after dark. Now is the time to slow down and take in the natural sights, sounds of soothing carols and smells of a fire burning in the fireplace and of gingerbread with an element of the barnyard from Christmases past. This year, the tours are offered from December 18–23, and guests are invited to an evening of holiday traditions on December 5. Visitors will tour the historic farms of England, Ireland, Germany and nineteenth-century America, taking in skits, narratives and conversation with the museum’s enthusiastic and historically attired interpreters. After experiencing Christmas traditions in the European farms, a horse-drawn wagon will take guests to the New World to experience the holiday workings in the historic American buildings. The celebration will continue into the Dairy Barn with food and music. Family reservations are required.

Experience an old-fashioned Christmas! Use our saws to cut your own tree, and enjoy a complimentary cup of hot cider while browsing for decorations, gifts and crafts in our festive Christmas shop, Santa’s Hive. Roast marshmallows for S’mores or sip hot chocolate by our amazing stone fire pit and have your picture taken in a fully restored Albany Cutter sleigh. Bring the kids for an experience they will never forget!

• Canaans • Freshly-cut Frasers • Norway Spruce • Scotch Pine • Leyland Cypress • White Pines • Fresh wreaths/garland made on the spot • Offering free shaking, bailing and twine for loading on your car

Santa and Mrs. Claus will be making an appearance on December 13!

Snow Safety 101 Injury Proof Your Wintertime Fun Winter is the perfect time to bundle up the family and head to the ski slopes, sledding hills or ice rink. But first, you’ll want to brush up on some winter sport safety to help lessen the likelihood of injury, leaving a family member stuck indoors all season. Mark Romness, MD, a UVA Children’s Hospital pediatric orthopedic specialist, offers his advice and recommends following these tips from the American Academy of Pediatrics: Before ice skating, teach your child to always skate in the same direction as the crowd and to never dart across the ice. Knee pads and elbow pads are helpful when a child is just learning to skate. When sled riding, it is recommended to find a hill far from any motor vehicles, trees, fences or any obstructions that are not padded. The hill should be free of ice, have a slope that isn’t too steep (less than 30 degrees is ideal) and should end with a flat runoff. by Kelly Casey

It’s also best to keep younger children separated from older children. Slide down feet first, and for more control, consider a well-lubricated steerable sled rather than snow disks or inner tubes.

Healthy Family

With skiing and snowboarding becoming more popular, even among young children, most resorts offer ski school beginning as young as 4 years old. Although snowboards are made for children as young as 4, some resorts will not teach snowboarding to children younger than age 7. A qualified instructor can help you decide whether or not your child is ready for these sports. In determining your child’s preparedness, you should consider your child’s strength and ability to cooperate. Once your child is ready for the slopes, make sure he or she wears a helmet specifically designed for skiing or snowboarding and that it is professionally fitted. Goggles help reduce glare from the reflection off of snow, something many skiers and snowboarders experience. It is recommended that eye

gear should be made from material that conforms to the standards of the American Society for Testing and Materials. Because kids grow quickly, have their ski bindings adjusted at the beginning of the season and also midway through the season to make sure they remain at the proper release point for your child. Snowboarders should also wear gloves with built-in wrist guards to protect them from falls. Once your child outgrows adult supervision, be sure they always ski or snowboard with a buddy. Most injuries occur late in the afternoon when children get tired, so be sure to take breaks throughout the day (a cup of hot chocolate, anyone?). Most likely, falls will only require a little comfort from mom or dad. But

if your child needs emergency care, don’t hesitate to seek help from your nearest qualified health provider.

{living well new mom} Hot Tips for the Holidays Seasonal Advice for New Moms

Let’s play Holiday Hot Tip Hot Potato! (HTHP). The game is simple: when you get a hot tip at holiday time, pass it on to another mom. That’s it! Why is the holiday season a great time for new mom HTHP? The holiday season means a lot going on. For starters, new moms are generally reinventing the wheel when it comes to work, partners and scheduling. Next, the holidays mean family, and families mean expectations. On top of that, the winter holidays coincide with cold and flu season. Put it all together, and a mom needs to know how to simultaneously swaddle her newborn, uh-huh her father-in-law’s sports reports, sing “Dreidel” and block the coughs of sweet but germy young cousins. by Whitney Woollerton Morrill

Fortunately, Mother Nature equips moms with a powerful drive to protect their babies and to let the holiday chips fall where they may. Hot Tip #1: The Call-Back from a Nurse

New Mom

The nurse call-back is quite possibly the best new mom Hot Tip in existence, holiday or otherwise. If your baby has symptoms that concern you but aren’t life-threatening, call your pediatrician’s office and ask for a call-back from a nurse. Nurses will ask screening questions to determine whether or not your baby needs to be seen by a doctor that day. This input can be especially helpful if you’re out of town for the holidays and are weighing if you need to seek a local doctor. It’s also helpful if the pediatrician’s office is about to close for a few days. Hot Tip #2: Guest-Room Tweaks Your sister may share that her babies slept right through the holiday commotion when they were newborns. While that was fun for her, you have a high-needs newborn who easily becomes over-

stimulated. Kiss your amnesiac-sister on the cheek, then retreat to the guest room before your baby’s amp goes up to 11. Turn off landlines and answering machines that may jar your baby awake, and tape layers of newspaper over the windows to darken the room. Find a white noise phone app to buff the edges off of loud televisions and rambunctious renditions of “Rudolph.” Hot Tip #3: Round up Babies bring special meaning to the holidays. They light the memory

of elders, charm children and knit together siblings. If a relative or friend questions your parenting choices, pause and take a deep breath. After that, try and remember that your loved one has good intentions. Ask her a question about her days as a new mother. Parenting norms swing wide from generation to generation. Once bottles were thought better, and now breastfeeding is said to be best. Often times, what feels like judgment is actually just awkwardly worded observations. Ask: Do they remember their baby having any scary illnesses? Or, where were you when you went into labor? New moms always need rest, and there’s repose in the living audio books that are wrapped like gifts inside the hearts of our loved ones.

Change Your Mindset

Seeing the good in things may take some brain training. Experts suggest taking these steps to stop a negative cycle and focus on the positive: 1. Recognize the power within. You control your mind; no one else has the ability to do that. Ask yourself, “What am I thinking right now?” It helps you develop awareness. 2. Switch gears. When you find yourself focusing on the worst, try constructive visualization. Instead of thinking about all the mistakes

you’ve made, twist them into lessons you’ve learned as a result. 3. Practice makes perfect. Start and end your day thinking of something you’re grateful for, even if it’s just the pillow under your head or the chance to close your eyes. Practicing gratitude generates more positivity.

Solar Power Did you know it’s harder to get good sleep when the days are shorter? That loss of shut-eye affects everything from your mood to your brain function according to Dr. W. Christopher Winter at Charlottesville Neurology and Sleep Medicine. “Our brains like to see bright light during the day. With less daylight, we’re moodier, our reaction time is slower, we may struggle with workouts and we do not perform as well at work.” You may even gain weight “because the body is trying to eat itself awake.” To combat the effects, try using a full–spectrum light in your office or wear a re-timer—a goggle-like device with blue-green lights that simulates sunlight.

WREATH WORKSHOPS Look for wreath workshops around Charlottesville early this month at Monticello, Innisfree and The Market at Grelen.

Wreaths

Fun & Easy

Harking back to the Celtic tradition of greenery gathering at the arrival of the winter solstice, welcome this holiday season with an afternoon of wreath making. This can be a family project with multiple levels of activity, including hunter/collector outdoor time followed by indoor creative time. Take that, dark days of winter! Prep. You can pick up wreath forms at thrift stores or craft stores. We like the straw and grapevine ones for ease and low frustration levels for the children. You will also want a hot glue gun. If you opt for double-wire or twig-wreath forms, pick up some wire to wrap the greenery around the form and some wire cutters. Adults can try out the more advanced homemade shapes with various materials to create squares like a four-paned window or stars. Consider picking up some ribbon, too. Get outside. Bring your pruners, and open up your scope of things that can be used for your wreath. A few ideas: Boxwood cuttings; greenery from junipers; spruces; firs; white pines and

40

December 2015

hollies (making your wreath the same day as your gathering is important, as their branches will still be soft and will bend); pinecones; seed pods; moss; bittersweet cuttings; sweetgum fruits; lotus pods; acorns; sumac flowers; and holly berries. You can also try painting the pine cones or acorns with silver or gold paint for holiday-inspired accents. (Kids are especially good at this task, though you might want to move back outside so they can paint with abandon.) Assembling. If using the straw forms or sturdy, store-bought grapevine wreaths, just go for it. Let the kids glue away. If you are using twig or wire forms and are going for a more traditional wreath, take time bundling your greens into small groups first. Then, attach these bundles to the frame with wire—dense layer by dense layer. You can attach additional decorations by wrapping a piece of wire around them and then weaving this wire into the main part of the frame.

Out of curiosity, I asked if getting the final sticker signified that he completed the class? “Oh, no, “ Alex says. “There are lots of lessons.” In other words, the sky is the limit, and there will always be more to learn and discover. Tucked back in the Fry Springs neighborhood, Jackson-Via opened its doors in 1969, and the sleek mid-century building is decorated with a swirling mural at the front door. The school’s motto, “As lifelong learners, we do whatever it takes to do our best, to become our best, and to help others reach that goal,” is evident in the extracurricular activities it offers. Walking through the halls, Principal Dr. Tracie Daniels appears to know every child by name, and the faculty is accustomed to the who comes to claim their children at the end of the day. Jackson-Via also boasts a beautiful City Schoolyard garden and out-door classroom. On the day of my visit, Ruth Kastenmayer was working with the storytelling group. {inspiration family fun} D’Alessandro believes basketball is a great metaphor for life. “We train our coaches to teach the fundamentals of the game as well as how they will carry their players well into their futures.” Since his transition, the camps of 10-15 kids quickly grew into skills academies, summer programs and private or group instruction to elite training and a variety of leagues. This year alone, the leagues – the Junior Basketball League (JBL), the Virginia Developmental Basketball League (VDBL) and the Recreational League (REC) – include over 150 teams and about 1,500+ kids. The growth in numbers is never the focus of the VABA staff, but rather, their focus is on making sure as many young athletes have the chance to play as possible, just as D’Alessandro aimed to do in Houston. Countless hours behind the scenes are dedicated to getting sponsors and raising funds that supports scholarships and financial aid for those in need of assistance. Five years ago, VABA realized the necessity of simplifying the application process for families seeking financial aid and now requires only a twopage form be filled out to apply. Mirroring the values they ask their players to learn and develop, they too look to give back the experiences they all had at some point while being a student-athlete. “I was fortunate to have caring coaches growing up. I feel a responsibility to pass along strong values to the next generation,” says Brian Fuller, a parent and VABA coach of a second-grade team. The staff also reaches out to schools, making personal visits to get kids who might not otherwise be a part of the program, building relationships with each school’s principal, teachers, guidance counselors and all other community members who play an important role in shaping the future of the local youth. Almost 15 percent of participants with VABA

A Generous, Tips for Making the Holidays More Meaningful By Charlotte Latvala

Grateful

{inspiration parenting}

Heart

A few years ago, my son A.J., then 4, was obsessed with getting a robotic dog. Whenever we drove past a toy store, he started his pleading. Convinced that nothing would make him happier than that dog, my husband and I broke down and bought him the most expensive version on the market for Christmas. “He will be so thankful when he opens this gift,” we told ourselves. And yes, A.J. was thrilled — for about a week. Then, we noticed the dog spent most of its time in his closet, as A.J. begged for other, even more expensive toys — a drum set, a riding mini-Jeep, a huge playhouse. “You’d think he’d be grateful for what he has,” I complained to my husband, Tony. “The more we give him, the less he appreciates it.” CharlottesvilleFamily.com

cat like Sam,” “Aren’t the colors in the sunset amazing?” or “I’m so happy when you listen!” When you reinforce an idea frequently, it’s more likely to stick. One way to turn up the gratitude in your house is to pick a part of everyone’s day where they acknowledge what they are thankful for. Two old-fashioned, tried-and-true ideas are to make saying what good things happened each day part of the dinnertime conversation or make bedtime prayers part of your nightly routine. Have kids help. It happens to all of us: You give your child a chore, but it’s too agonizing to watch him a) take forever to clear the table or b) make a huge mess mixing the pancake batter. The temptation

is always to step in and do it yourself. But the more you do for them, the less they appreciate your efforts. Don’t you feel more empathy for people who work outside on cold days when you’ve just been out shoveling snow yourself? By participating

Instead, figure out some way he can actively participate in helping someone else, even if it’s as simple as making cupcakes for a sick neighbor. “As you’re stirring the batter or adding sprinkles,” she says, “talk about how you’re making them for a special person, and how happy the recipient will be.” Encourage generosity. “We frequently

donate toys and clothes to less fortunate kids,” says a mother of two. “When my daughters see me giving to others, it inspires them to go through their own closets and give something special to those in need, as well.” Insist on thank-you notes. Karen, a mother of three girls, ages 10, 6 and 3, always makes them write thank-yous for their gifts. “When they were toddlers, the cards were just scribbles with my own thank-you note attached,” she says. “As they grew, they became drawings, then longer letters.” Younger children can even dictate the letter while you write, says Lewis. “Just the act of saying out loud why

{until next time humorous reflections} Merry Christmas From Our Cage to Yours Another Cheesy Christmas Card

“What’s this?” asks Marie. My 15-year-old daughter handed me a sheet of red paper. “It’s a Christmas letter,” I say. “Some families write up a report on all the amazing things they’ve accomplished in the past year and send it out instead of Christmas cards.” Marie read some of it. “It’s more interesting than just ‘Merry Christmas,’ but it’s kind of braggy and corny,” she says. “If you think that one is corny,” I say, “you should read the ones where they pretend the family pet is writing it. Those letters are so corny they can give you chills, but they’re kind of fun to read. Too bad we don’t have a cat or dog to write ours.” “We have a hamster,” says Marie. *** Happy holidays, everyone: Well, the Epsteins have had a dandy year. And why shouldn’t they? They haven’t been locked in a cage 24-7. I guess the highlight was their two-week trip to Canada. But they didn’t bring me. In fact, they didn’t even decide what to do with me until the night before they left. Marie is about 300 hamster years old, and her father is always trying to think of ways to utilize her boyfriends. It was his last-minute idea I guess I’m always going to to have Bill watch have “issues,” but generally, me. It hurt that so little thought was I think I’m learning to be given to my care, OK with my hamster-ness. but those two weeks turned out to be the best of my life. Bill fed me generously, and he even gave me a piece of lettuce once in a while. He oiled my exercise wheel! It looked like the start of a beautiful friendship, but no, three days after my people came back and got me, Marie broke up with him. I don’t know why; nobody tells a hamster much. But, as Marie’s mom says, “You have to deal with Marie’s boyfriends as if you are raising a puppy for seeing-eye duty; you shouldn’t get too attached to them.”

by Rick Epstein

The middle-sized daughter, Sally, who is 12, got braces this year. Her front teeth stick out nicely, but her father says, “It’ll be worth the 4,000 bucks not to have her looking like some kind of rodent.” And he says it as if I weren’t right there! I burrowed down into my sawdust and sulked for two days. He says, “Hammy must be hibernating.” In a house heated to 68 degrees? Right! I guess I don’t have feelings! Anyhow, Sally doesn’t need braces. She just needs to do more gnawing to wear down those incisors. But let her old man spend the money; serves him right. Wendy, who is 9, is the only kid around here who still likes to play. Sometimes she puts her smaller dolls on my back and pretends I’m a rodeo bronc. They are bad riders, and I buck them off easily. Last week, she got her dollhouse all set up with dollies and loads of furniture. Then, she shoved me in its front door yelling, “Look out! It’s a wild BEAR!” The place was so cluttered that no one could scamper through it without knocking over tables and chairs. But that’s what she seemed to want. It made her smile, showing off a set of choppers that a beaver would be proud to own. This dollhouse caper presented an excellent chance for escape. The couch was only two feet away, and it contains pure Habitat. I could climb up among the springs and stuffing and never be found. At night, I could sneak out and lick the plates that disobedient children leave in their bedrooms. I’d be free! Inside the dollhouse, I found an open window and was about to jump out when something stopped me. I guess I’ve been in captivity too long. The familiar cage, the nightly dish of birdseed, the occasional grape, the weekly shampoos, the clumsy caresses of Wendy’s gargantuan mitts...they’re the only life I’ve ever known. I turned away from the window and rampaged through the little bedrooms. Wendy grinned as dollies yelled and dived down the stairwell. I jumped after them, my claws flashing, hoping to maul them. I guess I’m always going to have “issues,” but generally, I think I’m learning to be OK with my hamsterness.

Peace on Earth, HAMMY
