Just Between Us… Dear Friends, Spring has definitely sprung. The flowers are at full throttle, days are getting longer and bedtimes seem to be getting pushed further and further (I love Goodnight Moon but really, you can say goodnight to the setting sun too—especially if you’re in kindergarten and Mommy needs to go finish her editor’s letter!) There have been some changes at our place of late. We planted 20 blackberry plants to the amused delight of the neighborhood birds that I suspect are anticipating the fruit to come as much as we are. Even more exciting, we have a new kid at our house! Deep breaths, friends. The Bryerton clan is holding steady at four children but our menagerie has been blessed with the sweetest little baby goat. Our pets are a miniature breed, Nigerian Dwarf. Mama Strawberry is knee high to me, and her Baby is knee high to her and if you pick up the cuddle bug, he weighs a little less than half as much as a small cat. All white with a few black patches he shows up vividly at a distance skipping around in the bright springgreen grass. It was such a surprise when he was born that he almost immediately hopped up, started walking around and nursing—all in the time between the elementary bus and the high school bus arrival one chilly Friday morning. if our babies started out so independent! He has been a total delight and our children are taking such care of little mama, sneaking her treats like an apple or corn often and using quiet voices when around the stable. This Mother’s Day I’m very happy to share the occasion with Strawberry— it’s a tough job being a first-time mom and she makes sure her wee kid is fed, clean and safe while at the same time encouraging his exploration. Sounds a lot like what we do for our kids of the human kind too, and us moms— we’ve got to support one another. Happy Mother’s Day!

6% say “no”

“Yes, with family and friends. I know many other parents who feel differently. For me, in the absence of any evident danger, I choose to err on the side of sharing thoughtfully, rather than isolating fearfully.” –TC, Charlottesville, At-Home-Dad of 1

“It’s a little scary” –Mom of 3

“It’s a convenient way to update family and friends who live far away.” –Mother of 2 girls in Barboursville “Rarely on Facebook, we don’t want our child to have an online presence until later in life when they choose to themselves. At the same time, we recognize that the world functions online, and if we didn’t put a photo up every now and then, people would think we were dead! We do have a website we upload all of our photos so that family members can access.” –Laura, Charlottesville, mother of 1 girl “Who doesn’t?” –Anonymous

“I used to, then I stopped. Mostly because of the time suck but also because my kids got a little older and they’d sometimes be embarrassed because their friends’ moms (aka my friends) might mention seeing it and compliment them on their robotics win for example and irrational pre-teen mortification would ensue.” –Mom of Two No, I do not post. My Mom is the only person we’re close with living out of state and she doesn’t use a computer. –Mom to Twin Boys “Not sure it’s safe to post them online” –C in North Garden

KeriAn Dodson Store Operations Officer—Rebecca’s Natural Food KeriAn Dodson’s first job as a teen on Long Island was at an independent health food store. So taking a position at Rebecca’s Natural Food when she moved to Charlottesville in 1995 was logical. Rebecca’s opened in 1987 and has evolved over time to thrive in Charlottesville’s ever-changing and competitive health food market. “We really focus on what makes us unique: our extremely knowledgeable staff and our ability as a small store to be nimble. We can bring in new and unusual products that meet our quality standards and customers’ desires more quickly than big-box stores, which have to go through corporate red tape,” says Dodson.

Dodson values environmental stewardship in all areas of life. She and her husband, Fred, are passing this on to their 5-year-old daughter, Claire— and not just at the dinner table. “We’re participating in Chesapeake Bay Foundation’s ‘Grasses for the Masses’ this year—growing sea grass at home, then bringing it to one of their planting events at the James River,” Dodson says. Her friends asked her, “Oh, what’s that?!” Keep it interesting.

We don’t have a set schedule, but I can

always count on halting the current state of events by telling my daughter, “Hey, let’s have Mommy-Claire time!” She’s way into that, even if the reality is that it’s the same stuff we’d be doing anyway. adjusts to her parents as much as we adjust to her. What routine or habit helps you keep on top of family and work obligations? I’m not sure if it counts as a routine or habit, but what about just the notion of “because there’s no other acceptable option”? I come from a long heritage of “the show must go on.” Make it happen! And we do. What is one thing your parents did that you try to incorporate into your parenting? Oohhh, the laughter! One thing my family is SO good at is finding humor in everyday stuff—that’s the indelible ink in my side of the family. Pretty much, no matter what the situation (and situations come in every shape, size, and sentiment), there’s a good belly-laugh coming! Laura is a freelance photographer and writer in Charlottesville who has never tried a seaweed snack, but hopes to soon.

The Nerd Herd is a FIRST Tech Challenge Robotics Team made up of 8 sixth-grade rookies at J.T. Henley Middle School. The Nerd Herd is proud to return home from the FTC Super Regionals as winners of the Judge’s Award, one of eight judged team awards given at the 72 team tournament that covers the Eastern U.S. region of over 1000 teams. The Nerd Herd’s hard work doesn’t end there. They are involved in the community and love getting people interested in robots, science, and technology. The team recently performed a demonstration at a local elementary school for fifth graders, were part of Maker Faire, and helped teach Robot C to other rookie teams at local libraries. Additionally, the Nerd Herd participated in Girls Geek Day, promoting STEM amongst elementary and middle school girls.

Bike Riding For Good On Saturday, March 28th, The Blue Ridge School hosted their “Ride the Ridge Race.” Approximately 70 mountain bikers took to the foothills of the mountains on the campus of the Blue Ridge School to compete in either the Junior Sport category, an 11-mile course with an elevation change of 3,000 feet, or the shorter, yet still challenging, Junior Beginner category. The event raised $1,300 for World Bicycle Relief, an organization that seeks to provide sustainable and affordable bicycles to those in need around the globe.

Ouch, My Head Hurts Tension Headache, Migraine or Something Else?

Headaches are part of almost every childhood. The most common cause? Tension, according to the National Headache Foundation. While tension headaches are the most common type of headache among kids and grownups, migraines can start as early as the preschool years, especially among children whose mom, dad—or both—get migraines.

Healthy Family

by Kelly Casey

For most kids, headaches are infrequent and go away with rest and TLC, including a head massage from mom or dad. But an estimated 20 percent of children between 5 and 17 experience chronic headaches, says the National Headache Foundation. Fortunately, it’s rare for a headache to be a sign of a serious condition and there are many ways to treat and prevent headaches. The first step is to work with a doctor for an accurate diagnosis. “Our job is just taking away the mystery by saying, ‘This is a migraine, tension headache or something else’ and then trying to sort out the most appropriate way to deal with the underlying issues,” says Robert Rust, M.D., a University of Virginia Children’s Hospital neurologist, who has been treating youngsters and adolescents with troublesome headaches for over 35 years. Tension headaches are associated with tight muscles that can be brought on by stress and mental or emotional conflict. These usually cause a dull pain on both sides of the head or the feeling of a tight band wrapped around the head. With migraines, a throbbing pain is most commonly on one side of the head, in or behind the eyes, and accompanied by a loss of appetite. “We don’t fully understand why these migraines occur,” Dr. Rust says. “In children and adolescents, migraines tend to increase in

An estimated 20 percent of children between 5 and 17 experience chronic headaches.

frequency in October and November, and go away in March right before school exams so it seems they are less strongly related to tension than to season.” For many of his patients, Dr. Rust prescribes relaxation techniques to relieve underlying stress. When headaches are particularly worrisome for a family, he might recommend a brain scan to rule out a tumor or other condition and thereby relieve anxiety that can be a contributing factor. Over-the-counter pain relievers are effective for most headaches. Prescription

migraine medication is safe for children as young as 6 and sometimes has the additional effect of relieving what are popularly known as growing pains in the legs, Dr. Rust notes. He cautions, though, migraine medication can have a sedative effect, and all medication (prescription and over-the-counter) should be used sparingly so it doesn’t lead to rebound headaches. To keep your household headache-free, Dr. Rust recommends making sure everyone stays well hydrated (particularly during a demanding sports season) and gets plenty of sleep and exercise. If your child has frequent headaches, you might talk to her doctor about a vitamin B supplement. Kale is naturally loaded with this vitamin so sneak this super green into your child’s smoothie.

Smart Solutions for Seniors & Families When it comes to financing your home, finding an expert is important. If you or your parents are 62 or older you can qualify for a reverse mortgage with American Nationwide Mortgage. John O’Connor, the Reverse Mortgage Doctor, specializes in this product and is considered an expert in the field. “With my experience in helping literally hundreds of people obtain a reverse mortgage, I felt it was important to concentrate on our core business and not get sidetracked by offering additional types of products. That way, I could make this my area of expertise providing clients an exceptional level of service from start to finish.” In fact, O’Connor originally helped his parents find the correct reverse mortgage 15 years ago even before he started in this industry.

“At first, I was skeptical about the product, but after doing my due diligence, I found that the reverse mortgage is a viable product for seniors who want to keep up with expenses, pay off debts and increase their quality of life.” Reverse mortgages are a federally insured loan that allows seniors to convert the equity in their homes into cash. All proceeds are tax free & do not affect Medicare or Social Security. Credit scores are not looked at and income verification is not necessary, he adds. Additionally, no payments are due on a reverse mortgage as long as the owner is still living in the home and the borrower remains on the deed. “The reverse mortgage will be paid back after the home is sold whether that is in the homeowner’s lifetime or upon their heirs settling the estate,” O’Connor adds. John O’Connor offers no-obligation meetings with clients - either in their homes or his office in Crozet. He takes great pride in treating his prospective clientele with the same care & diligence that he provided his own parents 15 years ago.

{living well home and garden} Simple Rhubarb Syrup Adapted from The Kitchen

Instructions

Ingredients 4 cups rhubarb, washed and cut up into small chunks 1 cup water 1 cup sugar

Combine all ingredients in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Then, reduce the heat to low and simmer for 20–25 minutes. You will want the rhubarb to be falling apart and the color of the syrup should turn a bright red. Place a fine mesh strainer over a bowl, to strain out all of the rhubarb chunks and catch all of the syrup. Let the syrup cool before placing it in a container. This will keep in the fridge for up to three weeks. Makes about 8 ounces. Suggested uses: Mix with sparkling wine or prosecco. Combine with seltzer water for a fizzy drink that kids will love. Drizzle over ice cream or yogurt.

It’s almost time for the 25th annual Discovery Dash hosted by the Virginia Discovery Museum. This Charlottesville tradition will be held on Saturday, May 9 at Monticello High School. Whether this is your first family fun run or you are a seasoned veteran, there is something for the whole family. The track is open for kids 3-14 years old and for parents who want to take part in the parent/ child relay. The day begins at 7:45 with the 3-4 scramble and ends at 10am with the award ceremony where all boy and girl first-place finishers will receive trophies. This year’s race is also the last leg of Ragged Mountain Running’s Kid’s Triple Crown, a local initiative to excite youth about exercise. Be sure to sign up by May 4. More info at vadm.org.

{inspiration enrichment} depends on the generosity of its members and the community at large to safeguard its legacy for generations to come. The second largest tourist attraction on the Downtown Mall, drawing local and out-of-town visitors alike, the VDM has big plans for itself, hoping to evolve into a children’s center that would better serve a wider demographic and age range while also catching VDM up with current children’s museum trends. In order to help achieve big dreams, the museum’s Board of Directors has created an Educational Advisory Committee (EAC). The EAC aspires to evolve the Virginia Discovery Museum into an educational mecca that incorporates technology, arts, science and culture (TASC). The reimagined entity will be called the Virginia Discovery Center and will bring to life museum supporters’ dreams of a more current, more sustainable and fresh facility that reflects Charlottesville’s unique personality. “We believe in the museum and feel strongly that the children and families of our community deserve a world-class resource that reflects the sophistication of Charlottesville,” says VDM Board Member Janine Dozier. To help inaugurate their new direction this fall, the Virginia Discovery Center hopes to launch an exhibit on simple machines, which will incorporate the themes of TASC. The Simple Machine exhibit will feature a wheel and axle sit and pull, gravity wall, gear wall, and pulley system. There are many ways to help VDM achieve its vision of becoming a world-class educational center. As a nonprofit organization, the museum receives most of its revenue through membership fees,

ADVENTURES WITH HISTORY A SUMMER CAMP THAT BRINGS THE PAST TO LIFE by Jody Hobbs Hesler

48

May 2015

Journey Through Hallowed Ground Extreme Journey Summer Camp is not like any other summer camp out there. It’s an extreme outdoor adventure camp devoted to having participants learn about and experience history, offering sessions in the Charlottesville area as well as in Loudon County for rising 6th through 8th graders.

Park”; “March across Antietam National Battlefield”; “Hike Harpers Ferry National Historical Park”… and more. The mission behind the camp, according to Extreme Journey Camp Director Blaine Horton, is “to draw students’ attention to our national heritage area, [which extends] 180 miles from Gettysburg down to Charlottesville… [and to give them] experiences outside the textbook and on the site where things happened.” Laura Lewis, one of two camp leaders for the Charlottesville site, describes the camp dynamic this way: “We’re out in the field, going to these various sites, and the kids are hearing from experts and historians and curators and park rangers.” By matching an outdoor adventure to each historical site they visit throughout the National Heritage area, the camp creates

variety tours. At Harpers Ferry, campers hike throughout the national park. For Gettysburg Battlefield, there’s a 14- to 16-mile guided bike tour, one of the camp’s most popular adventures. Another highly rated excursion is the canoe trip along the James or Potomac River where campers learn about Native American history and culture for each respective region. Ultimately, the hope is that campers will begin to see the influence of the past on what’s happening in the present. “If they can make those connections,” says Horton, “they’ll love history, too, and come back and share what they’ve learned with other people.” Drew, an 11th grader at Albemarle High School, was a camper for two years and junior counselor for three. “Not only did I learn history,” he says, “but I

The goal is to broaden the campers’ understanding of major players in history beyond the typical scope of political bigwigs and military leaders. “They’re uncovering the mysteries of

wouldn’t see if they went on a casual visit the camp seems to attract really great kids who are engaged and ask really good questions.” So the campers learn about more than “just the history of the ‘great men,’ but the people’s history,” says Lewis. “At Antietam [Battlefield],” she says, “we learn a lot about Clara Barton and the soldiers, not just the Civil War generals. At the C & O Canal, we learn about the canal workers. At Montpelier, one of the main focuses is on the slaves who maintained the plantation.” Campers spend time with the on-site archaeologists, learning about what they have been able to interpret about the everyday lives of slaves there. For the Charlottesville area canoe trip, campers put in at Scottsville. “For the last couple of years,” Horton says, “we’ve been fortunate to have a member of the Monacan Nation join them for that day and talk a little about leadership in the Monacan Nation.” Loudon County campers learn about the Piscataway Nation. Horton and Lewis were both history majors, and both are also schoolteachers during the academic year. The active learning and traveling components of the Extreme Journey camp give them great

For example, at Antietam Battlefield, the guides distribute different soldier’s names to each of the campers. The campers then stay alert throughout the day for mention of their soldiers, giving them a focal point for understanding the reality of the very personal gains and losses of that particular battle. Drew agrees that campers are drawn to the personal nature of the tours. “My favorite story has to be the one of Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain at the Battle of Gettysburg,” he says. “I can hear Bob, the tour guide, quoting the hero, ‘Fix bayonets!’ and describing his men’s

I was standing on that very island, using the same vessel as the Native Americans.” Up at the SOCA soccer fields north of town, local mapmaker and historian, Rick Britton joins the Charlottesville campers and shares the map he’s made of the fields depicting the Monacan central village that used to be there. He also tours the group through downtown Charlottesville and covers unique aspects of local history. He shows them an old graveyard behind the former Martha Jefferson Hospital and tells the stories of people buried there who had all sorts of interesting ties to American history.

FRIENDS: A BIOLOGICAL NECESSITY Regardless of how our lives change, close women friends are not something we should be willing to sacrifice. For one thing, experts now tell us that gal pals aren’t just niceties—they’re necessities. Researchers at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA), revealed in 2002 that the “fight-or-flight” reaction may not be the only way humans react to stress. Their study indicated that females (both animals and humans) adopt a “tend-andbefriend” approach: they instinctively seek out other women and draw more closely to their children when they’re under pressure. In early societies, these instincts helped protect women and children from predators while their men were away. Even today, still, a cascade of brain chemicals appears to prompt us to connect with women friends whenever we need comfort. In addition, a 2002 Harvard Nurses’ Health Study revealed that women breast cancer survivors who had networks of friends and supporters reported better

health and quality of life after treatment than socially isolated patients. Despite all this research, reality still strikes: when women get busy with family and work, they often put friends on the back burner. That’s a mistake, says Kristen Harrington, a private-practice therapist in Kingston, New York. “Women friends— both old and new—understand us, nurture us and sometimes even give us a muchneeded kick in the butt that no one else can,” she says. “I tell my women clients that not only do they have a right to carve out time for women friends, they really

need to do it.” Here are some simple steps for putting friendship back on your priority list: 1. Target your ideal friend. If you want to cultivate close friends, you’ll need to attack the task the same way you would any other important goal. “It’s perfectly okay for the effort to be calculated,” says Cheryl Richardson, a Newburyport, Massachusetts-based

What hobbies do I love? “The answers to these questions will provide you with clues about where you might want to go to meet new people,” Richardson says. You might also be surprised: your ideal pal may be someone you already

The crystal bed is a healing modality for rejuvenation, alignment, and balancing of your energy fields (chakras) which in turn aids in the process of physical and spiritual healing.

2. Advertise yourself. Don’t worry— you won’t need to put out a personal ad like “Best friend wanted.” However, if you’re looking for a few new friends, consider running an ad for a newcomers group, if you’ve recently moved to a new town, or for a book group if you love to read, Richardson suggests. 3. Develop meeting strategies. A walking group or weekend class is an easy way to check out new people in a

It also feels more natural to find new friends this way. “It makes friendship the secondary mission instead of the sole focus—something you’re looking for while you’re doing something else you enjoy,” says Mautner.

are out of the ordinary,” she says. “I spend a lot of time keeping in touch with the women who are special to me.” 7. Schedule friend time on your calendar—in ink. Good friendships require uninterrupted time away from spouses, children, work and other life distractions. You really can’t “be there” fully for a friend if you’re running errands, chasing children or writing an e-mail while you’re talking to her. If you’ve been shortcutting your friendships, how do you change your ways? Start by allowing more time with a friend than what it takes to gulp down a double espresso, says Richardson. She even suggests planning regular “girls’ nights” or, with closer friends, entire weekends away. Contrary to what my husband told me, Richardson believes that no one is too old for slumber parties! “My best friend lives several hours away from me, so whenever we get together, we have a ‘sleepover,’” says Richardson. “It’s the best!” 5. Beth Seliga, our cover photographer, is the creative talent behind the lens at 3 Cats Studio. Passionate about photography from an early age, Beth has experience shooting in many different contexts. She began her career traveling the world as a professional sports photographer, with her work appearing in publications including Sports Illustrated, USA Today, and Cycling Magazine. After having kids and settling down in Albemarle, Beth transitioned to portraiture. Although she enjoyed the exhilarating days of photographing cyclists from the back of a motorcycle, Beth has a special place in her heart for capturing families on camera. “I am a storyteller who specializes in documenting the energy and joy within children, [and] the love and bond between couples of all ages,” she says. A mom, wife, and owner of 4 (no longer just 3!) cats, Beth lives in Crozet with her family. Beth especially enjoyed the opportunity to do the portrait session for this year’s winning mom. “They were so sweet”, she enthused. Dad was traveling for work at the time and missed the shoot but mom, Katie, was thrilled to have photos of Jaden as she turned two.

Send us your favorite story about one of the beloved dads in your life and be entered for a chance to win a family pack of fun day passes to Massanutten Resort! {resources pregnancy guide} We all know that regular exercise, along with eating sensibly, is supposed to provide the foundation for good health, but with mothers wearing so many hats, it can seem like a luxury to take time out of our schedules for a workout. But exercise doesn’t need to consume hours of your day, you don’t need fancy workout clothes, and it can be a terrific opportunity for some much-needed downtime. In fact, keeping fit brings rewards on many levels. Regular exercise can help reduce stress and depression, increase energy and circulation, and decrease the likeliness of blood clots and heart disease. And the benefits of exercise

extend to your entire being. Getting into shape makes you feel good about yourself and the world around you. Being a fitter person will increase your energy level, motivation, memory, selfesteem, and patience. The University of Virginia Health System recommends that women exercise at least a little bit every day, starting slowly and building as time goes on. If you’ve been fairly sedentary of late, they recommend starting with just five to 10 minutes of non strenuous activity and increasing the length of time spent exercising as your body permits. For more active women, they suggest about 30 minutes of strenuous activity and 15-20 minutes of less strenuous activity daily. The type of activity you choose can seem like an overwhelming decision; there are so many variables to consider and unlimited venues to choose from. Nicole Goerge, Certified Athletic Trainer

clients to find their motivation and keep it in their mind. That motivation could be seeing the number on the scale go down, squeezing into those skinny jeans, or being able to beat your 10-year-old in a race. “If you can fit exercise into your current routine,” says Mimi Bender, CEO of Women’s Health Virginia in Charlottesville, “you are more likely to continue than if you see it as an added burden.” If you’re just starting out, think about moving more. Take the stairs instead of using the elevator. Park at the back of the lot and walk farther. Pacing while talking on the phone, gardening, and vacuuming all qualify as physical activity!

{resources pregnancy guide} set aside 30-60 minutes of time three to five times a week for structured activity, either on your own or with a group. If you can’t find a chunk of time all at once do small bouts (10 minutes) here and there – they can really add up. The choice to exercise alone or in a group is really one of personal preference. The social interaction can be great and you will get to meet new people who will help to keep you motivated, but working out alone can give you time for self-reflection. Most fitness trainers and healthcare professionals agree, however, that more women tend to stick to a fitness routine if they work together with at least one other person. If you know that someone else is counting on you or waiting to see you, you’re more likely to keep going. If you are reluctant to enroll in a class or gym regimen, call up one or more of your friends and start scheduling times to meet and go for a walk around the neighborhood or mall. Make it a twiceweekly treat, a time to get together and mentally unwind while you get your bodies moving, a time to catch up, share stories, and enjoy the company of another

exercising, and about the type of activity that might work best for you at first. Postpartum is a very important time in a mother’s life, and exercise can help strengthen abdominal and pelvic muscles as well as help you down the path to your pre-pregnancy weight. Having a fitness routine can also decrease the likeliness of postpartum depression and help a new mom cope with the onset of her new role. “Generally, if you exercised regularly throughout your pregnancy and had a normal vaginal delivery, you can continue your pregnancy workouts within a week or so of giving birth,” says Erica K. Perkins, Fitness Director at UVA. Perkins notes, however, that you should not do any strenuous activities during the first six to eight weeks following delivery while the body is doing most of its healing. “Increasing intensity and/or the duration [of your exercise routine] by more than 10 percent per week could cause complications, injury or prevention of healing,” says Perkins. Once your doctor has given you the green light to exercise, there are several ways you can help shape your postpartum body. Goerge notes that one thing every woman

needs to understand is that it took nearly 10 months to put on the extra pregnancy pounds and develop certain problems and it won’t all go away in the blink of an eye – it takes time, effort and commitment. Nine to 12 months is a realistic goal for ‘normal’ people to lose their pregnancy

pounds. Moms shouldn’t expect that they can rebound their bodies in a month or so like Hollywood divas would have us believe they do. The best way to begin a gradual routine, whether you’ve recently had a baby or just haven’t worked out in a while, is to start with gentle exercises. The best way to shed unwanted pounds, says Goerge, is to make regular cardiovascular activity part of your life. Walking, cycling, swimming or aerobics are great ways to burn calories and take off weight. “Walking can help to prevent blood clots, gives you more energy, improves your attitude and self esteem, and gives you essential bonding time if you take your baby with you in a
