mindbodyspirit stuck in a lunch rut?

A great way to do lunch creatively is by putting together a Mason Jar salad meal. Start with your dressing at the bottom of the jar (this is key so your salad doesn't get soggy!), then load in veggies, beans, meat, nuts, grains, fruit, or cheese and finish off with fresh greens on top. The seal of the mason jar keeps all your fixings intact and ensures that your salad will taste fresh and delicious when you pour it into a bowl when it's finally lunchtime.

Creative combos to try: Caprese: arugula, orzo, fresh mozzarella, cherry tomatoes, balsamic vinaigrette

Southwest: romaine, quinoa, black beans, corn salsa, avocado, monterey jack, cilantro-lime greek yogurt dressing

Asian Noodle:

mixed greens, soba noodles, red bell peppers, edamame, carrots, sesame seeds, peanut dressing

Summer Berry: baby spinach, pecans, strawberries, goat cheese, raspberry vinaigrette

“ Our bodies are our gardens—our wills are our gardeners.” — William Shakespeare 4

mindfulness meditation A healthy mind, body, and spirit often starts with getting a good night's sleep. Having the proper bedtime routine is essential for a good night’s rest. If you find yourself not getting the best sleep possible, try mindfulness mediation. Studies have shown that practicing nonjudgmental awareness of drifting thoughts and feelings in one’s mind (mindfulness meditation) will improve insomnia, fatigue and even depression.

stretch & de-stress in the office Sitting at a desk all day can take a toll on your body. Being kind to your muscles and joints by stretching them during the day can help you both focus on your work and improve your overall health. To fight office-chair discomfort, try these breathing and stretching exercises. (Don't worry, these stretches can be done from your desk and won't attract too much attention from curious coworkers!)

Try these easy stretches:

• Shoulder Roll: Sitting on your chair with your feet flat on the ground and your back straight, breathe in, and as you breathe out, roll both shoulders backwards in slow circles.

• Torso Twist: Sitting in your chair, breathe in, and as you exhale, grab the left arm of your chair with your right arm and stretch your torso. Switch and repeat.

• Toe Touch: Sit at the edge of your chair and straighten your legs out in front of you. Breathe in, and as you breathe out reach toward your toes. Sit back up as you inhale, and repeat three times.

eat local, eat fresh

W

armer weather is quickly approaching, which means greater access to locally grown fruits and vegetables. But what is the best way to buy local produce for your family? Trips to the Farmers Market? Check out that bin in your grocery store advertising goods from local farms? Scope out a roadside stand? Living in view of the Blue Ridge Mountains we are fortunate that all of these options are available. In the heart of summer, roadside stands and trucks filled with tomatoes, corn, and cantaloupes line thoroughfares on the outskirts of town. On Saturday mornings you can meet local farmers, buy vegetables and goods produced in our area, and grab a bite to eat at the City Market. There are midweek Farmers Markets at Meade Park and Forest Lakes. We also have a variety of local food co-ops with drop off locations in town, like Relay Foods. And then there are Community Supported Agriculture programs, or CSAs. The question is not about access, but what is the best fit for your lifestyle and family budget. Farmers Markets, like City Market, give you access to the greatest variety of farm and local goods in one convenient location, but for some, it can be challenging to stay on budget with so many tempting selections. Still, others want to feel like they are supporting the local economy in a more personal way. This is where CSAs can help.

7

For 25 years CSAs have given consumers the opportunity to purchase local, seasonal produce, meat and eggs directly from farmers through buying shares at the beginning of the season. This risk-sharing model funds farming ventures while giving members access to American favorites like tomatoes, green beans, and strawberries as well as vegetables not normally found on supermarket shelves like tatsoi and kohlrabi. Spring is the perfect time to join a CSA. Many begin in mid-May or early June, but shares are usually still available, and may come at a reduced price, if you join a week or two into the season. Many CSAs offer multiple options to pay for your share, which makes it an affordable choice for most family budgets. Below are ten tips for finding, joining and getting the most out of a CSA.

1 Shop Around!

courtesy of Caramont Farm

CSA shares come in many shapes and sizes, so shop around to find one that best matches your needs and resources. Ask families in your community if they are CSA members or visit a CSA directory like .buylocalvirginia.org online. Most CSAs begin offering memberships in the winter and you can often get a deal if you sign up early.

2 Location of Farm & Pick-up CSA farms are all over the place, and it’s likely you won't have trouble finding one. Pick-up options vary by farm and may include pick-up at the farm, Farmers Markets or other locations throughout the community. Think about how far you would be willing to travel on a weekly basis to get your produce and what pick-up option would be most convenient and enjoyable for you. If you can get a group of friends and family together, you may even be able to designate a drop off location at your house.

3 Pick-up Day & Time Choosing a farm with a convenient pick-up day and time will have a big impact on your experience throughout the CSA season. Do you like to run errands on your way home from work, or on the weekend? Think about your current grocery shopping routine and how picking up your CSA can fit into and enrich the experience.

4 Size, Season Duration & Price Some CSA farms offer full, half, and single shares to accommodate different size households. Your family size and inclination towards vegetables will help determine what weekly amount of produce would meet your needs without excess waste. The length of the season and number of deliveries varies among farms. Most begin in mid-May to early June and end anywhere from October to the end of November. A limited number of farms also offer winter CSA’s. Prices vary with size, season length and other value-added options.

5 Produce Selection & Other Items CSA farms offer a wide variety of seasonal produce and many provide harvest calendars so you can see what they

expect to plant and harvest throughout the season. Some farms pre-pack boxes for members while others allow members to pick & choose certain quantities from the week’s harvest. Depending on your preference, this can make a big difference in how you enjoy your CSA. While some like the convenience and anticipation of pre-packed boxes, others like to handpick. Some farms also offer specialty items, either produced by them or through partnerships with another farms or smallscale food producers. Find out what is included in your CSA, how your weekly allotment is selected and what other “addon” options (such as beans, meat, fruit, bread, cheese, eggs, honey, wool/yarn, etc.) will be available to you as a member. Keep in mind that some of these “add-on” options are usually at an additional cost.

6 Bulk Quantities for Preserving A CSA share typically provides an amount of produce for immediate consumption by you and your family. If you’re interested in food preservation (canning, freezing, drying, pickling, etc.) or extra quantities for juicing, ask about what bulk buying arrangements the farm offers to CSA members.

9

7 Production Practices One benefit of joining a CSA is knowing how your food is grown. Some CSAs have certified organic farms and most do not use GMOs or pesticides. But even farms that are not certified organic may use organic, sustainable practices. You can find out more about each farm’s operation by going to its website or asking farmers about their farming practices.

8 You Pick & Farm Visits Most CSA farms harvest the bulk of the produce each week for members. In addition, many offer "you pick" crops that are available in either a limited or unlimited quantity during farm pickups. Going out to the farm to pick herbs, flowers and veggies can be a fun family activity, so find out what opportunities there are for going to the farm to spend time and pick, if that is of interest to you.

9 Opportunities & Involvement CSA farms typically welcome involvement from their members. Most farms organize one or more farm events each season and some farms encourage their members to "drop in." Each farm’s

emphasis on volunteer or mandatory workdays, community/celebration events, educational opportunities, involvement with planning and administration, and other projects will vary. Consider what level of involvement is right for you.

10 Connecting with Farmers

Lisa is a local writer in Charlottesville, VA with a background in education and psychology. She has an interest in the impact food and access to nature have on our health and wellbeing. She has been a member of a local CSA for the past three years. Beth writes from Rockville, MD. Through gardening and her CSA share, she enjoys fresh fruits and vegetables all summer long with her husband and their four children. 11

courtesy of Forrest Green Farm

One of the missions of a CSA is to connect consumers and farmers. Some CSA farms offer a variety of ways to keep in touch with farmers through on-farm activities, newsletters, and interactions during pick-up, etc. The best way to connect with a farmer is to join a CSA. Good luck choosing! While there are several factors to consider when joining a CSA, most farm websites are well organized and user-friendly. Answers to key questions regarding cost, farming practices, and farm activities are easily found on CSA webpages and order forms. Some farms have stands at the City Market, which is now open, or at the mid-week Farmer’s Markets at Meade Park and Forest Lakes. Their knowledgeable staff can answer your questions and give you a feel for the farm’s values and sense of community. So as spring begins to bloom on the Blue Ridge and here in the piedmont, consider the best ways to bring the flavorful bounty of our region to your dinner plate.

healthy home How to Make your Cleaning Routines Healthier |

By Jody Hobbs Hesler

It may be tempting to enlist heavy-duty cleaners off the store shelf to make your home sparkle, but it’s not necessary. With a little know-how the goodies in your kitchen cupboards can do the job. For a healthier home look for simple, natural ingredients like vinegar, baking soda, lemon juice, olive oil and borax that all can clean as well as their less eco-sensitive grocery store rivals without polluting your air or the watershed. Do your best to avoid products that use these harsh chemicals: silica; trisodium nitrilotriacetate; methylene chloride; naphthelene; ethoxylated nonylphenol; 2-butoxyethanol; toluene; xylene (courtesy of the Labor Environmental Alliance). Largely because of commercial cleaning products, our indoor air can be up to five times more polluted than the air outside. But you don’t have to sacrifice health for a clean home. Nontoxic DIY cleaners deliver considerable power at minimal cost. It sounds too simple, but removing shoes in your home (and asking guests to do the same) keeps all sorts of chemicals, pesticides, and other pollutants from being tracked

through your house. (Seventhgeneration. com) If you hire someone to clean your home look for local companies, such as One Clean World and Charlottesville Sanitary Supply Corporation, that offer green cleaning services. One Clean World adds essential oils to their natural cleaning products for those who want their clean homes to be fragrant homes. You can also green your home improvement projects by watching out for toxins and fumes in your materials. For example, when painting choose low- to no-VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) paints. Another simple change is to use diatomaceous earth (DE), which is made of cracked seashells for natural pest control. It’s food-grade, so you can use it outside or even on your pets’ hair without worrying if a pet or child might ingest it.

3

Mix-Your-Own Health-Conscious Cleaners

All-Purpose Scrub 1/2 cup baking soda Plant-based liquid soap like “Castille” 1/2 of a lemon

Start with your baking soda in a bowl. Add just enough liquid soap to make a creamy paste. Spread mixture on the flat side of your lemon then scrub the surface. The lemon acts as a sponge and leaves a pleasant natural citrus scent. Use a dampened sponge or towel to wipe away any residue. H elpful Hint: The paste will stay moist for a few hours if you have other projects and to save the leftovers even longer, seal in a glass jar.

A healthy planet makes us all healthier. When it’s time to get rid of yesteryear’s fashions or furniture, donate what you can’t use. SPCA Rummage, the Salvation Army Store, Goodwill, and the Habitat Store are a few of the cause-specific thrift shops around town. Or you could turn your castoffs into payoffs by consigning your clothes to shops like Twice Is Nice and Darling. When you need to add or replace items, upcycle. Turn to Craig’s List and local swap forums to re-use quality items rather than buy new. When upcycling won’t do for new furniture, you can shop organic, just like with food, and keep your home toxin-free. As Betty of BetterWorldBetty. com says, “Buy local. Buy less.” However you choose to live a greener life, you are making a healthy choice for the planet and for yourself. Jody, a local writer and mother, is all set to take on her own green spring cleaning projects!

13

Mold + Mildew Spray 2 cups distilled white vinegar 2 cups water

Just pour this helpful ingredient into a spray bottle and hit the shower. You might even keep a spray bottle in the bathroom so it is handy to use often. Open a window to let the smell dissipate. H elpful Hint: For really tough jobs increase the ratio of vinegar.

Floor Cleaner 1/8 cup plant-based liquid soap 1/8 cup distilled white vinegar 1 gallon water 10 drops essential oil (scent of your choice)

Mix in a bucket and mop your sealed wooden floors as you usually would. Helpful Hint: Soap will leave residue on

ceramic or tile floors, so it is recommended to eliminate soap and use 1/4 cup of vinegar with 1 gallon of water.

“To ensure good health: eat lightly, breathe deeply, live moderately, cultivate cheerfulness, and maintain an interest in life."

THE SCOOP ON SUNSCREEN So what exactly is SPF? SPF stands for "Sun Protection Factor," and references the proportion of time that wearing sunscreen will delay the onset of a burn. Wearing SPF 30, for example, means that it will take 30 times longer to get a sunburn than if you weren't wearing sunscreen at all. Dermatologists recommend reapplying every two hours (unless you're sweating profusely or in and out of the water). For maximum protection, use rub-on sunscreen. Spray-on sunscreens may seem more convenient, but their light mist doesn't cover you as thoroughly. And skip the 'screens lower than SPF 15 or higher than SPF 50.

Growing plants in your home is not only a great decorating technique, but they also improve the quality of the air you are breathing in your home. According to a study from NASA, plants can filter harmful compounds lurking in the air and make breathing easier. Purify your air at home plants like aloe, English ivy, eucalyptus or African violets for a splash of color.

Publishers Robin Johnson Bethke Jennifer Bryerton

Dear Friends, We are pleased to share the 19th edition of The Healthy Living Directory with you. When David and Jenny Robinson of Birch Studio asked us to take on this wonderful project last year and welcome it into our own line of publications, we were very honored. Since 1996, this terrific resource has helped to promote the natural health community in and around Charlottesville. We are very proud to further its mission to serve our holistic community with our expanded web site and social media feeds that include facebook and an e-newsletter. By broadening the scope of The Healthy Living Directory to also include participation of conventional medical practitioners who embrace a holistic approach and expanding distribution into popular locations like Whole Foods, we believe advocates of healthy living will find a greater voice in our community. This will lead to a greater awareness of the many terrific people and organizations in both the conventional and the complementary medical communities that are committed to an understanding of health that encompasses body, mind and spirit.
