Welcome! Year-round natural beauty, hallowed halls of history, spectacular arts and music and small-city sophistication — Charlottesville has it all! It is easy to see why Sperling’s Best Places recently named Charlottesville as the #1 Best Place to Live. Here you can walk in the footsteps of Thomas Jefferson at his Monticello home and at his beloved University of Virginia – both are World Heritage Sites full of fascinating history and interesting architecture, plus you can relax in the scenic countryside he so admired dotted with stunning vineyards, horse farms and Blue Ridge Mountain views. With so many wonderful places to enjoy here in Charlottesville, it can be tough to choose. So, we went to the experts to find out what they think is the best of the best. We polled our Charlottesville Welcome Book readers, locals and tourists, about their favorite local businesses that exemplify wonderful customer service; from delicious restaurants, amazing boutiques, hot spots and cool clubs, to wonderful resorts and awe-inspiring historical landmarks...and everything in between! Watch for the Welcome Book Winner logo on ads throughout this issue, in shop windows and go to CharlottesvilleWelcomeBook.com to get the insider’s scoop on the best of everything our town has to offer. All of the award winners are highlighted in a special digital edition online, along with plenty of reader’s tips that will put you “in the know.” Throughout the fall, we’ll give away tickets to Charlottesville concerts, festivals and other events on our Facebook page at Facebook.com/CharlottesvilleWelcomeBook, so be sure to like us for a chance to win!

Monticello: Monticello/Thomas Jefferson Foundation, Inc.

Attractions & Museums Monticello in Fall Glory

From the moment you glimpse the iconic pillars of Monticello’s West Portico and the breathtaking displays of fall foliage, you know you are in the presence of a visionary mind. The author of the Declaration of the Independence, Thomas Jefferson dedicated his life to serving our country at its founding as the third United States president, Governor of Virginia and Secretary of State among other roles. Jefferson was also an architect, scholar, musician, inventor and agriculturalist. Like the Taj Mahal and the Tower of London, Monticello is on the list of World Heritage Sites known the world over as cherished pieces of human history and of great universal value.

Those interested in the history of gardening at Monticello may glean insight into Jefferson’s passion with the two-hour Revolutionary Garden tour on Wednesdays and Saturdays through October. The tour includes a chance to meet the professional garden staff and participate in seasonal gardening activities, such as planting, harvesting, and sampling crops ranging from asparagus to baby root vegetables. Be sure to stop by on September 7 for the seventh annual Heritage Harvest Festival on Monticello’s West Lawn to celebrate Jefferson’s “greatest service” and the amazing legacy he left behind as a gardener. Here you’ll taste the delicious heirloom fruits and vegetables, learn about organic gardening and seed-saving. If you visit on September 6 you’ll be able to partake in the pre-festival workshops on such topics as “Easy Fermentation,” “Growing a Better Organic Food Garden,” “Native American Herbs of Flavor and Fragrance” and more. No matter when you tour, visiting Monticello is always a special event.

When you tour the home, his clever inventions abound, from the Great Clock in the hallway that ingeniously marks the days and hours with a pulley system to the polygraph copying machine he designed for his famous letters. You’ll also learn more about Jefferson’s family and the enslaved community along Mulberry Row. Kids will love the Mountaintop Hands-On Activity Center “extras” on October weekends and everyone should set aside time to stroll the grounds of this famous plantation and admire the glorious gardens.

More Colonial Riches When visiting Monticello, make sure you save time for Ash Lawn-Highland, the plantation home of President James Monroe, our fifth president. Just two-and-ahalf miles down the road from Thomas Jefferson’s “Little Mountain,” Ash Lawn-Highland is a historic presidential residence and working farm with more than 500 acres of land. Visitors are invited to tour the historic presidential residence, explore the amazing boxwood gardens and learn more about President Monroe and his wife, Elizabeth.

With lovely examples of early-American and Victorian decorative arts for visitors to admire, Ash Lawn-Highland provides another authentic view of 19th-century life. The plantation home looks much as it did when the Monroe family of five lived there, with classic French decorative touches, a display of White House China and a child’s tea set in the nursery. Costumed interpreters demonstrate colonial activities such as open-hearth cooking and candle making, giving guests an authentic feel for the era. Investigate the gardens, enjoy the peacocks, sheep and other livestock and peer into outbuildings to get a historic view of colonial craftsmanship. For those seeing both Ash Lawn-Highland and Monticello on the same day, the perfect lunch break can be found at the 18th-century Michie Tavern, just down the road from Monticello. Established in 1784 by Colonel William Michie, the tavern was a wonderful gathering spot for locals and travelers alike. The rustic restaurant features hearty Southern fare and servers in period attire. You might be invited to join in a Virginia Reel or maybe even glimpse one of the rumored ghosts! Another area presidential property worth exploring is Montpelier, the home of James and Dolley Madison. While visiting the 2,650-acre estate and mansion you’ll discover historic buildings and engaging exhibits, active archaeological digs, breathtaking gardens and fun, handson activities for the kids. Enjoy the beautiful surroundings while learning about the “Father of the Constitution” and the woman who inspired the title “First Lady.”

Scenic Scottsville James River: Bill Crabtree, Jr., Courtesy Virginia Tourism

Beautiful Scottsville was founded along the banks of the James River as a major hub for travel and commerce. Not far from the town’s present day location, Thomas Jefferson’s father Peter served as justice for the newly formed County of Albemarle in the mid-1700s. Years later, Jefferson himself practiced law in the town’s old courthouse. Start your visit by strolling the historic district to enjoy antique shops, delicious restaurants, homemade ice cream, craft brews and a museum capturing the town’s transformation from an 18th century settlement to a bustling 19th century river and canal port. Across from the Scottsville Museum, visit Canal Basin Square for a self-guided tour of the area’s outdoor transportation history from the Native American Monacans until the railroad era. Explore a scale model canal lock, a fullsize batteau replica and more. Venture farther afield down country lanes to the scenic beauty of nearby vineyards and horse farms. Canoeing or kayaking down the James River is a great fall activity for anyone who can swim, even young children. The Hatton Ferry — one of only two poled ferries still operating in the country — also offers a fun trip across the river for all ages but be sure to call before your trip to confirm its operating. No matter your plans, it is sure to be memorable!

The famous fall foliage of the Blue Ridge Mountains is spectacular whether viewed from a leisurely car trip along Skyline Drive, a hike on a woodland trail in the Shenandoah National Park or from one of the many popular hot-air balloon rides that float peacefully above the stunning Albemarle countryside. All kinds of outdoor pursuits are plentiful here, catering to a range of interests. This fall, getting outside in Charlottesville can include championship golf at one of our gorgeous local courses, rock climbing or hiking a nature trail, tennis at a world-class facility, fishing at one of our local lakes, horseback riding and more. U.S. Bicycle Route 76, also known as the TransAmerica Route, rolls through Charlottesville, attracting thousands of cyclists to come enjoy the beautiful countryside on one of the two original cross-country bicycle routes. The city also boasts many bike lanes and pedestrian routes making it an enjoyable place to explore. For a unique experience near Monticello, check out the serene Saunders-Monticello Trail, which offers panoramic autumnal vistas. If you’re an avid walker, you’re in luck: the Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center – a national program touting communities for their support of pedestrian safety – recently designated Charlottesville as a Silver Level Walk Friendly Community for its walkability initiatives. Whether your dream vacation is action-packed or more relaxed, the Charlottesville outdoors offers temptations of all kinds for intrepid solo adventurers, couples and families alike.

Fun Especially for Families Where Families Play Charlottesville is packed with great activities for children, from parks and playgrounds to special seasonal attractions. Apple and pumpkin picking at area orchards and festivals are always a popular autumn pastime, offering lovely views of the changing leaves and often including hayrides, corn mazes, food, crafts, music and other fun.

When in the Downtown area, hop aboard the free trolley for a fun way to get around! It loops around the UVA grounds to the Downtown Mall where you can visit attractions that include indoor ice skating, ice cream parlors, toy stores and the popular Virginia Discovery Museum. Kids can play nearby at McGuffey Park as well for more outdoor fun. As Halloween approaches, the Albemarle Charlottesville Historical Society hosts Spirit Walk in the Downtown area, a spooky guided tour that includes a cast of costumed “ghosts” to regale you with stories. Trick-or-Treat on the Lawn at UVA is another unique local tradition where costumed students hand out treats to hundreds of little ghosts and ghouls under the historic shadows of the Rotunda and near the room where Edgar Allen Poe once lived. The Arts & Music Scene Music Notes nTelos Wireless Pavilion

Charlottesville’s eclecticism and great support of the arts lend the local music scene an amazing breadth. Whether you prefer bluegrass or jazz, rock or country, alternative or gospel, metal or classic, we have it all! On Friday evenings through September 13, make your way to the Historic Downtown Mall for Fridays after Five, a free concert series now in its 26th season featuring local and regional acts at the nTelos Wireless Pavilion. Get a seat to watch the whole show, spread out a blanket on the grassy hill and enjoy takeout from a nearby restaurant, or just listen as you stroll the brick-paved district. The nTelos Wireless Pavilion also has several big names coming this fall, including Willie Nelson & Family (September 15), Fun. (September 26) and Tony Bennett (October 13). At The Jefferson Theater, catch acts like Gramatik (October 2) or Gary Clark, Jr. (October 18), or head to the Southern Cafe and Music Hall for performances from Titus Andronicus (September 25) and Fossil Collective (October 27). The Paramount Theater will host Pink Martini (September 5) and Neko Case (October 27). Fans of Dave Matthews Band will want to stop into Miller’s on the Downtown Mall, where Dave served drinks before taking the stage and soon were on their way to becoming a Grammy-winning and top grossing touring band.

Since its founding nearly 200 years ago, music has been part of the history of the University of Virginia. Located on The Lawn, UVA’s Old Cabell Hall houses one of the finest historic auditoriums in the country along with the largest music library in Virginia. The auditorium was first built in 1898 and is lauded by artists as one of the best venues worldwide for its excellent acoustics and intimate atmosphere. This fall, Old Cabell Hall will join The Paramount Theater in hosting the annual Charlottesville Chamber Music Festival (September 8-22). During your visit be sure to check out the copy of The School of Athens by Raphael dating to 1900 gracing the north wall and the Skinner organ, a gift from Andrew Carnegie in 1906. Live music truly abounds in Charlottesville! Check out the local lineup at CharlottesvilleWelcomeBook.com. 28

The Arts & Music Scene Engaging Theatre When you visit Charlottesville, you’ll quickly see how our vibrant arts scene has something for everyone! Experience engaging local performances and touring troupes this autumn at venues large and small. From national acts at John Paul Jones Arena and The Paramount Theater to lively performances from our smaller local theater companies such as Live Arts, Four County Players and the American Shakespeare Center in Staunton — there is always a show going on.

This fall, embark on an enchanted journey with Ariel, Belle, Cinderella and the other Disney princesses in “Disney on Ice: Princesses and Heroes” at John Paul Jones Arena. Watch Prince Phillip battle against the fire-breathing dragon Maleficent, Prince Eric and Ariel’s struggle against Ursula, Jasmine and Aladdin’s magical romance and more. John Paul Jones Arena will also host the Blue Man Group as part of the Broadway in Charlottesville Series. For a laughout-loud look at the nature and clichés of theater, be sure to visit Four County Players to catch a showing of A.R. Gurney’s “The Fourth Wall.”

A short drive over the mountain to nearby Staunton’s American Shakespeare Center presents the works of Shakespeare under the original staging conditions at the Blackfriars Playhouse. The fall season within this beautiful setting, the world’s only re-creation of Shakespeare’s indoor theatre, includes “Troilus and Cressida” and Oliver Goldsmith’s “She Stoops to Conquer,” among others. Be sure to arrive early for the pre-show entertainment in true Shakespearian style! Performances abound in Charlottesville! Check out the full schedule at CharlottesvilleWelcomeBook.com. 30

Art That Moves You Exuberant painter Jackson Pollock said that art is “all a big game of construction, some with a brush, some with a shovel, some choose a pen.” Whatever your favorite medium, galleries and artwork abound here. Each first Friday of the month, from 6-8pm, local galleries and other venues displaying works of art open their doors for the popular First Friday Artwalk. A perfect place to start your Artwalk is at the McGuffey Art Center. This gallery space is full of artists at work in their studios accented by a gift shop which carries a variety of members’ art throughout the year. The center hosts a large array of educational opportunities in visual and performing art. You can pick up a gallery guide to First Friday’s offerings as well as browse the 45 light-filled studios, three galleries and a gift shop at McGuffey itself.

The University of Virginia’s Fralin Museum of Art provides a sophisticated, high-tech home for the art contained within its historic walls. Exhibits include art from around the world dating from ancient times to the present. In addition to its permanent collection, the museum offers changing exhibitions, accompanied by related programs and publications. Fall exhibitions at the Fralin include photographs by Ansel Adams, contemporary photography of the American West, work by the French artist Emilie Charmy, depictions of the family of Lloyd Walton Patterson and models and photographs of sculptural projects by Patrick Dougherty. Another unique local treasure of art is the Kluge-Ruhe Aboriginal Art Collection of the University of Virginia. This fall, the museum will showcase “Heart of the Desert,” a collection of desert paintings from the Aboriginal communities of Papunya, Yuendumu and Balgo. With a full program of exhibits, lectures, research and education programs, the Kluge-Ruhe collection has a lot to offer the visitor who’s interested in indigenous artwork.

The newest addition to the Charlottesville arts scene is the Monticello Artisan Trail, a countywide loop showcasing artisan studios, agri-artisan farms and local craft businesses. Hand-crafted decorations, artisanal foods and heirloom art can all be found along the trail, as well as the artistry found in local wines and microbrews, and in performing arts. For more information, visit artisanscenterofvirginia.org. Whether you’re merely appreciating or interested in purchasing, Charlottesville’s vibrant, robust art scene shouldn’t be missed. Best of the Brew Brews to Taste Charlottesville is proud to be home to a myriad of microbrewers, taphouses and establishments that specialize in crafting or carrying outstanding handmade beers and ciders. Thomas Jefferson took great interest in creating not only wines but beers as well. Monticello serves its own official beer: Monticello Reserve Ale, inspired by what Mr. Jefferson labored over and loved in a beer. Any visit wouldn’t be complete without ordering a mug of this heritage ale. Visitors and locals alike can now enjoy fabulous beers and historically crafted ciders from six local breweries and five cideries. Many of these breweries and cideries include tasting rooms and restaurants allowing guests to enjoy local brews while surrounded by great food, amazing music and stunning mountain views. The Brew Ridge Trail, which includes many of these destinations, starts in historic Charlottesville and meanders through scenic Albemarle and Nelson counties. For a trail map and more info, visit BrewRidgeTrail.com. Additional local breweries and cideries are currently in the works plus an area whiskey distillery is expected to open for tours in the near future.

Vineyard Tours & Tastings Vineyards Bountiful & Beautiful White Hall/Robin Bethke

Thomas Jefferson dreamt that Virginia wines would one day be plentiful and held in high regard, and today’s local vintners have accomplished that by producing wonderful, award-winning wines. The Monticello American Viticultural Area, which includes Albemarle and the surrounding counties, encompasses more than half of Virginia’s wine country and contains more than 1,000 stunning acres. Now the fifth-largest wine-producing state in the country, Virginia has received both national and international acclaim for its wines. Several dozen area vintners offer up tastings, tours, barrel and vertical flight tastings, multi-course wine-pairing meals and special events for connoisseurs and novices alike. (See the Regional Wine Trail map on page 50.) Our region’s many boutique wineries offer a wonderful selection of wines to share with friends and family, perfect for the fall season.

Wine & Dine Jefferson Style

Dining Room at Monticello: Monticello/Sequoia Design

Jefferson’s Love of Food & Wine Thomas Jefferson was sometimes called “America’s first wine expert” due to his extensive experimentation in viticulture and oenology. Be sure to check out Monticello’s vineyards near the extensive vegetable garden and the restored wine cellar in the passage beneath the house.

A platform above the brick floor allows visitors entry to the wine cellar to see what it looked like during Jefferson’s retirement years in the first part of the 19th century. Try out the model dumbwaiter in the “Crossroads” exhibit to see if you could have transported bottles of wine upstairs to guests without mishap! Afterwards, stop by the dining room to examine Jefferson’s original dumbwaiter, which has been restored to its original working condition. roast prime rib certified angus steaks succulent seafood fine wine • piano bar

Dining & Gourmet Hot Spots A spectacular sight awaits visitors in the dining room, which features walls painted a brilliant chrome yellow. The color — which replaced the Wedgewood blue that inspired so many homeowners across the country — is not so new, as it was chosen by Jefferson around 1815 to grace the walls that set the scene for many formal dinners, where rice soup, mutton and even a new treat — ice cream — was served. The dining-room restoration was sponsored by Polo Ralph Lauren and marked the first collaboration with Monticello curators and archaeologists with regards to the dining-room ceramics. Excavations showed that, in Jefferson’s retirement years, the family most often dined on pearlware, an English earthenware similar to porcelain but not as expensive. A set of green, shell-edged pearlware now graces the dining room, on loan from The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation.

Jennifer Jones

Congratulations on choosing Charlottesville as your new home! Nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, your new community is known for year-round natural beauty and small-city sophistication. Charlottesville has received countless accolades in recent years for a variety of reasons – from its delicious, locally-sourced restaurants to its active, sports-centric community. USA Today recently featured Charlottesville as a great place to invest in a home. “Take one of the nation’s quintessential college towns, throw in a big slice of American history, add golf courses and wineries, set it all in prime horse country, and the result is Charlottesville,” says Larry Olmsted for USA Today. We couldn’t agree more! You’ll find that locals go out of their way to make you feel at home here – whether its with a simple wave hello as you pass one another on the Downtown Mall or by providing detailed directions to the nearest trail to enjoy the spectacular fall leaves. Now that you know the best places in town to celebrate your move to the area, check out the list to the right for the nitty gritty details of getting settled in your new home. We welcome you!

University of Virginia, Rotunda: Jennifer Jones

Becoming aa Local Local Becoming The Scoop on UVA

N ewcomer ’ s S pecial S ection

Virginia Athletics Media Relations

The University of Virginia is a bastion of tradition founded by Thomas Jefferson, the most popular man in town. Whether you’re preparing to enter its hallowed halls for a degree or enjoying a weekend in town, here is your guide to local lingo. We proudly cheer on our Orange and Blue, “The Cavaliers” – “Cavs” for short or “Wahoos.” What’s a Wahoo? Legend has it that Washington & Lee baseball fans dubbed the UVA players “wahoos” during their fierce in-state rivalry back in the 1890s. By 1940, “Wahoos” was in general use to denote University students or events relating to them. The abbreviated “Hoos” sprang up later in student newspapers. The area on which UVA sits is called “Grounds,” not “campus,” and freshmen here are called “first-years.” The large, domed building with Mr. Jefferson’s great statue is the Rotunda. It faces a huge grass courtyard known as “The Lawn,” surrounded by historic residences that are now coveted student and faculty residences. From the steps of the Rotunda you can see “The Corner,” the area located at the intersection of University Avenue and the central entrance to UVA, the Honor Gate. Always abustle, the Corner has a great selection of casual restaurants with college prices and trendy shops that give it a cool vibe.

UVA Home Football “That good old song of Wa-Hoo-Wa... We’ll Sing it O’er and O’er!” Fans of the University of Virginia’s Cavaliers football team know this refrain well, as it gets sung with rousing spirit each time the Wahoos score a touchdown. With eight home football games this fall, there ought to be plenty of chances for fans to sing their support in good-ol’ Charlottesville style!

Becoming a Local Why Not Retire Here?

N ewcomer ’ s S pecial S ection

With temperate climates, beautiful scenery, expert medical care and a thriving cultural environment, it should come as no surprise that Charlottesville is a popular retirement location for baby boomers retiring early, those who seek an active life and those who enjoy our peaceful scenery. Learning institutions such as Piedmont Virginia Community College and UVA’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) offer courses to suit all interests – “Understanding Opera” and “Genetics Then and Now” are two recent OLLI classes – and its outings have included adventures in Memphis, Greece and Brazil. Many local gyms and fitness facilities also offer senior classes. And, the golf courses, tennis courts and walking trails are very popular, too. Where to Retire magazine recently named Charlottesville as one of the country’s “Dynamic Locales For Walkable Living.” Plus, there are many rewarding volunteer opportunities available locally, and our award-winning Senior Center has a great mix of programs and travel choices, such as a jaunt to Nashville or a trip to Ireland. Charlottesville is also proud to be home to two great medical centers, the University of Virginia Health System and Martha Jefferson Hospital, both offering outstanding health care on the cutting edge of medicine. With the Charlottesville Albemarle Airport as a convenient gateway to a world of destinations and the coast only a couple of hours away, it’s no wonder Money Magazine rated Charlottesville as the #2 place to retire young!

Becoming a Local Pets Welcome!

N ewcomer ’ s S pecial S ection

If you treat your furry friends like family, you’ll fit right in here! With outstanding veterinarian care, pet-friendly hotels and outings and extensive outdoor parks and trails, Charlottesville is the ideal location for those with pets. Take a stroll along the brick-paved Downtown Mall where your pup will be happy to find refreshment at the many water bowls shop owners place outside of their stores just for this purpose. While the weather’s still warm, well-behaved pets are allowed to join their owners in the outdoor seating areas of some of the area’s finest restaurants. Be sure to take your pooch to one of the local dog parks where they can frolic off-leash. Darden Towe Park, Azalea Park and Chris Greene Lake Park all include areas specific for dogs. While pets are allowed within nearby Shenandoah National Park, there are some trails where pets are prohibited so be sure to check nps.gov/shen before you head out on your hike. There are also plenty of wineries in the area that are happy to accommodate owners and their pets, and some vineyards even host special pet-friendly events like Keswick Vineyards’ “Yappy Hours” where visitors can check out lovable animals available for adoption through local shelters.

Becoming a Local How It All Started

N ewcomer ’ s S pecial S ection

Charlottesville, named for Queen Charlotte Sophia of England and founded in 1762, is an inspiring setting to call home, as is the surrounding Albemarle County, named in honor of William Anne van Keppel. He was the second Earl of Albemarle and served as Governor General of the county from 1734 to 1735. We’re in the center of Virginia, surrounded by gentle rivers, rolling green pastures, mild seasons and an easy two-and-a-half-hour drive to Washington, D.C. One reason Charlottesville has so many transplanted residents is that it’s a small city – just over 10.4 square miles, with 43,500 residents – but it has the trappings of a big one. Musical acts and dramatic performances, fine dining, lovely shops... all are available in abundance. Covering 726 square miles, the county’s population is more than double that of the city, at about 100,500. Both city and county are fascinating places to explore and wonderful locales to call home, and we welcome you! Voted #1 in Charlottesville 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 & 2013!
