Welcome! Year-round natural beauty, hallowed halls of history, spectacular arts and music and small-city sophistication—Charlottesville has it all! It is easy to see why Orbitz.com named Charlottesville as one of the five places every American should visit! Here you can walk in the footsteps of Thomas Jefferson at his Monticello home and at his beloved University of Virginia—both are World Heritage Sites full of fascinating history and interesting architecture—and you can relax in the scenic countryside he so admired, dotted with stunning vineyards, horse farms and Blue Ridge Mountain views. With so many wonderful places to enjoy here in Charlottesville, it can be tough to choose. So we went to the experts to find out what they think is the best of the best. We polled our Charlottesville Welcome Book readers, locals and tourists about their favorite local businesses that exemplify wonderful customer service, from delicious restaurants, amazing boutiques, hot spots and cool clubs to wonderful resorts and awe-inspiring historical landmarks—and everything in between! Watch for the Welcome Book Winner logo on ads throughout this issue and in shop windows, and go to CharlottesvilleWelcomeBook.com to get the insider’s scoop on the best of everything our town has to offer. All of the award winners are highlighted in a special digital edition online, along with plenty of reader’s tips that will put you “in the know.” Throughout the fall, we’ll give away tickets to Charlottesville concerts, festivals and other events on our Facebook page at Facebook.com/CharlottesvilleWelcomeBook, so be sure to like us for a chance to win!

Attractions & Museums Monticello in Fall Glory From the moment you glimpse the iconic pillars of Monticello’s West Portico and the breathtaking displays of fall foliage, you know you are in the presence of a visionary mind. The author of the Declaration of Photo Credit: Thomas Jefferson Foundation/Monticello Independence, Thomas Jefferson dedicated his life to serving our country at its founding as the third United States president, Governor of Virginia and Secretary of State, among other roles. Jefferson was also an architect, scholar, musician, inventor and agriculturalist. Like the Taj Mahal and Tower of London, Monticello is on the list of World Heritage Sites recognized as cherished pieces of human history and of great universal value.

When you tour the home, his clever inventions abound, from the Great Clock in the hallway that ingeniously marks the days and hours with a pulley system to the polygraph copying machine he designed for his famous letters. This fall, visitors can enjoy seasonal outdoor tours featuring the property’s archaeological discoveries and a look at the experiences of the enslaved people who lived and labored on the Monticello plantation. Those interested in the history of gardening can join the one-hour Monticello Garden Tasting Tour on Wednesdays and Saturdays through October. This tour inlcudes a tasting of seasonal vegetables, fruits and edible products from Jefferson’s gardens. Kids will love the Mountaintop HandsOn Activity Center, and you’ll also learn more about Jefferson’s family and the enslaved community along Mulberry Row. In celebration of “Virginia Cider Week,” enjoy in tasting unique cider blends and late season apple varieties from Albemarle Ciderworks. For more family-friendly fun, be sure to stop by September 9-11 for the tenth annual Heritage Harvest Festival on Monticello’s West Lawn to celebrate Jefferson’s “greatest service” and the amazing legacy he left behind as a gardener. Here you’ll taste delicious heirloom fruits and vegetables and learn about organic gardening and seed-saving. If you visit on September 10, you’ll be able to hear from Patrick O’Connell, this year’s keynote speaker, and you’ll be able to partake in the pre-festival workshops on such topics as “Monticello Herbs & Their Uses,” “Growing Gourmet and Medicinal Mushrooms,” “5 Must-Do’s for Tomato Success in the Southeast” and more. No matter when you tour, Monticello is always a special event.

Touring Tip: Purchase the Monticello Neighborhood Pass to get

While visiting Monticello, make sure you save time for James Monroe’s Highland, the elegant plantation of our fifth president. Just two-and-a-half miles down the road from Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello, Highland is a historic presidential residence and working farm with more than 500 acres of land. Visitors are invited to tour the residence with a costumed guide, explore the amazing boxwood gardens and learn more about Photo Credit: Jennifer Jones James Monroe Highland: Jennifer Jones President Monroe and his wife, Elizabeth. Key events this fall include the Constitution Day Celebration at James Madison’s Montpelier, which is in conjunction with the Taste of Freedom Wine Festival on September 19, and Johnny Appleseed’s Birthday on September 17-18 at Carter Mountain Orchards. Or celebrate our veterans at the home of James Monroe, one of only three U.S. presidents to fight in the American Revolution, on November 11 in honor of Veteran’s Day.
Another area presidential property well worth exploring is Montpelier, the home of James and Dolley Madison. While visiting the 2,650-acre estate and mansion, you’ll discover historic buildings and engaging exhibits, active archaeological digs, breathtaking gardens and fun, hands-on activities for the kids. Enjoy the beautiful surroundings while learning about the “Father of the Constitution” and the woman who inspired the title “First Lady.” New to Montpelier is a 3.9-mile trail linking Montpelier’s Landmark Forest Trails and Grelen Nursery, which is now open for residents and tourists alike to visit and take in the area’s rich natural and cultural origins.

As Halloween approaches, the Albemarle Charlottesville Historical Society hosts Spirit Walk, a spooky guided tour where you can visit all the best Downtown haunts of the past, including the historic County Courthouse and the Maplewood Cemetery. The Spirit Walk is a popular nighttime tour for adults and older children, and the event usually sells out, so make plans early at albemarlehistory.org. Trick-or-Treating on the Lawn at UVA is another unique local experience. Costumed students living in the historic pavilion residences hand out treats and goodies to thousands of little ghosts and ghouls each year while proud parents preserve the memory with the Rotunda and colorful fall leaves as a backdrop. Parking can be tricky, so allow extra time or carpool. To find out more about how local families play, log on to CharlottesvilleFamily.com or pick up a free copy of CharlottesvilleFamily’s Bloom magazine, available all around town, for the area’s most extensive calendar of local events and festivals just for families!

Vineyard Tours & Tastings
Thomas Jefferson dreamt that Virginia wines would one day be plentiful and held in high regard, and today’s local vintners have accomplished that by producing wonderful awardwinning vino. The Monticello American Viticultural Area (AVA), which includes Albemarle and surrounding counties, encompasses more than half of Virginia’s wine country and contains more than 1,000 acres of stunning vineyards. Vineyards in our Monticello AVA benefit from a natural east-southeast exposure and mild fall temperatures. Now the Kings Family Vineyard: Photo Credit: Robin Bethke fifth largest wine-producing state in the country, Virginia has received both national and international acclaim for its wines. More than 30 local vintners offer up tastings from the lightest, lemoniest Pinot Grigio to the deepest, richest Merlot. Wine festivals bring thousands of visitors, who come to taste the variety of flavors, enjoy local music and take in the glorious country views. In addition, many wineries offer tours, barrel and vertical flight tastings, multi-course wine-pairing meals and special events for connoisseurs and novices alike.

Vineyard Tours & Tastings Fall Wine Events
T ours & T astings G uide
Experience a wine festival in the rolling foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains for a picturesque fall outing and a great sampling of our regional flavors. Our local wineries have live music and special events happening all fall long with live music, food trucks and more. Keep an eye on CharlottesvilleWelcomeBook. com for more upcoming vino events! Don’t miss the Taste of Freedom Wine Festival on September 19, held in conjunction with a Constitution Day celebration on the beautiful grounds of James Madison’s Montpelier, where you can enjoy arts and crafts, live music, children’s activities, Photo Credit: Robin Bethke balloon rides, fireworks and wine tastings from over a dozen local vineyards. Rebec Vineyards in Amherst hosts its 26th Annual Wine & Garlic Festival October 8-9. Enjoy tastings from local wineries, specialty foods, live music and find out who will be crowned “Garlic Queen” of the year. Further afield is the Thomas Jefferson Wine Festival at Poplar Forest on November 19. For another seasonal sampling option, sign up for one or many of the vineyard’s pairing dinners where you can learn the flavors of local awardwinning wines from some of the areas highly respected Sommeliers. For example, on October 22-23, Barboursville Vineyards will be hosting an Autumn Vertical Tasting, where the worldrenowned wine the Octagon will be available for tasting. Getting out to experience the vineyards is easy, as all major roads are marked with the grape “Tours” signs, helping wine lovers navigate their way throughout the country roads. Central Virginia is so picturesque that an unplanned detour can be a lovely way to explore a part of the region you may not have discovered otherwise; for those who like to make an itinerary and stick to it, it might be gratifying to know that many scenic drives offer a cluster of vineyards within easy distance of each other. See the Regional Wine Trail map on page 25 to find your way around the Monticello AVA. We suggest bringing a picnic to your favorite vineyard to enjoy with wine by-the-glass or a bottle purchased from the tasting room. Many vineyards also offer meat, cheese and baguette platters for snacking. Photo Credit: Robin Bethke
Varieties special to the Monticello AVA include Cabernet Franc, Norton and Viognier. Cabernet Franc, lighter than a Cabernet Sauvingnon, tends to have peppery aromas and can include hints of tobacco, plum or violets. The native North American Norton, another red, is deeply colored and might have notes of coffee and bittersweet chocolate. Viognier is a white variety that gives off floral or fruity aromas but is typically a dry or slightly off-dry wine. Whatever your palate desires—flowery, fruity, smoky or light—you’re sure to find it here.

Best of the Brew Brews to Taste Charlottesville is proud to be home to a myriad of microbrewers, tap houses, distilleries and establishments that specialize in crafting or carrying outstanding handmade beers, ciders and spirits. Thomas Jefferson took great interest in creating not only wine but also beer and cider. Monticello, in conjunction with our own homegrown Starr Hill Brewery, has crafted an artisanal beer: Monticello Reserve Ale.
T ours & T astings G uide
A wonderful way to spend a fall afternoon or evening, the Brew Ridge Trail, which features a variety of the area’s local breweries, starts in historic Charlottesville and meanders through the scenic Albemarle and Nelson counties. There are many local limousine and taxi companies that offer special rates for tours of the trail. A map of the trail can be found online at BrewRidgeTrail.com. Virginia also has a long history of whiskey distilleries. The distillery at George Washington’s home Mount Vernon (in Northern Virginia) is still in operation and was once the largest in America, producing 11,000 gallons in 1799. Whiskey lovers can also tour a distillery in Sperryville and visit two Nelson County distilleries making local craft vodka, gin and bourbon. Spirits are high for the future of Virginia spirits.

Wine & Dine Jefferson Style Jefferson’s Love of Food & Wine Thomas Jefferson was sometimes called “America’s first wine expert” due to his extensive experimentation in viticulture and oenology. Visitors can check out Monticello’s restored wine cellar in the passage beneath the house.
D ining G uide
A platform above the brick floor allows visitors entry to the wine cellar to see what it looked like during Jefferson’s retirement years in the Dining Room at Monticello: Monticello/Sequoia Design first part of the 19th century. Try out the model dumbwaiter in the “Crossroads” exhibit to see if you could have transported bottles of wine upstairs to guests without mishap! Afterwards, stop by the dining room to examine Jefferson’s original dumbwaiter, which has been restored to its original working condition. A spectacular sight awaits visitors in the dining room, which features walls painted a brilliant chrome yellow. The color, which replaced the Wedgewood blue that inspired so many homeowners across the country, is not so new. It was chosen by Jefferson around 1815 to grace the walls that set the scene for many formal dinners, where rice soup, mutton and even a new treat—ice cream—was served. The dining-room restoration was sponsored by Polo Ralph Lauren and marked the first collaboration with Monticello curators and archaeologists with regards to the dining-room ceramics. Excavations showed that, in Jefferson’s retirement years, the family most often dined on pearlware, an English earthenware similar to porcelain but not as expensive. A set of green, shell-edged pearlware now graces the dining room, on loan from The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. Virginia is considered the birthplace of American wine. Thanks to Jefferson’s unrelenting pursuits we can all now raise our glasses and revel in his dream come to fruition. Visit monticello.org, for details.

Wine & Dine Jefferson Style Fresh Local Foods
D ining G uide
Charlottesville lies among a few beautiful counties, including Albemarle, Nelson and Orange, whose rich agricultural history and farm community are well loved and supported by our many local restaurants. Well before so-called locavores arrived in the headlines, many of our restaurants were already building their reputations on the quality of the local food they supplied to their grateful customers. Area chefs take great pride in creating memorable meals, and they also enjoy letting the artisan’s hand show through when plating locally crafted cheese, charcuterie, jam and wine. It is no exaggeration to say that local chefs and restaurateurs are friends with the growers, farmers and brewers who supply their establishments. Take note of the farms and artisanal ventures mentioned by name on menus, for you may encounter some of the people around town or find their products on the shelves of a specialty store—the perfect souvenir or gift.

Wine & Dine Jefferson Style Casual Dining At the forefront of the farm-to-table movement, Charlottesville is a hot bed for gourmet food on-the-go. Food trucks are a staple of the city’s foodie culture, offering a variety of treats to tempt any taste bud. From Southern-inspired cuisine, to sweet and sugary dessert-centric trucks, or even locally sourced booze-infused food, there is an epicurean delight for the most discerning of palates!

If you are strolling the UVA campus during term time, you are sure to run into students in line for their favorite lunchtime dishes. Head to a vineyard a variety of week nights and any Friday or Saturday night and you are likely to spot any one of the delicious mobile kitchens, serving up dinner to enjoy with a glass of local vino. Venture to a variety of restaurants on the Downtown Mall for live music on Fridays and you can enjoy a rotating lineup of city favorites. No matter what you’re craving, you’re likely to come across it in the transportable form of a food truck. And, just like the area’s stationary restaurants, most truck chefs have a commitment to sourcing local, sustainable foods. With this growing trend, fall is the perfect time to enjoy a casual bite while dining al fresco!

Art That Moves You Surrealist painter Salvador Dali said, “A true artist is not one who is inspired, but one who inspires others.” Whatever medium may inspire or provoke you, galleries and artwork abound here in Charlottesville. Each first Friday of the month, local galleries and other venues on the Downtown Mall open their doors to display works of art in the popular First Friday Artwalk.

Experience engaging local performances and touring troupes this fall at venues large and small. The current performance selection at the Blackfriars Playhouse at the renowned American Shakespeare Center in Staunton, the world’s only replica of Shakespeare’s original indoor theater, includes “The Rise of Queen Margaret,” “Twelfth Night,” “King Lear” and “Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson.” In nearby Barboursville, Four County Players brings us the emotional, “Bullet for Unaccompanied Heart.” This tragic tale interspersed with comedic elements follows the story of blues guitarist, Dugan McBane, who is taken hostage by the ghost of his former lover. Meanwhile, Charlottesville art-lovers will be happy to experience the Picasso, Lydia and Friends III exhibit at Les Yeux du Monde Gallery this fall. This exhibit will be held in memory of local artist, former University of Virginia professor, and world-renowned Picasso scholar Lydia Gasman whose works will also be on display. Other artists included in this exhibit are William Bennett, Anne Chesnut, Dean Dass, Rosemarie Fiore, Sanda Iliescu, David Summers, Russ Warren and, of course, Picasso. Newly reopened Chroma Projects will also have exciting exhibits this fall, including “Floating Worlds: The Art of Sherrie Hunt” in October and “Tactility: Sculpture by Alan Binstock and Paintings by Kathleen Markowitz” in November! Sprint Wireless Pavilion Also this fall, The Paramount Theater welcomes a variety of hilarious and musical acts, and the Live Arts Theater presents many unique shows, like “The Spoon River Project” and “Rumplestiltskin.” All country music fans in the area can look forward to a visit from Kenny Rogers and special guest Linda Davis in Roger’s, Final World Tour: The Gambler’s Last Deal. Others will enjoy the political satire of the comedy troupe, Capital Steps. A group of former senate staffers, this funny group quit their day jobs to satirize the workings of D.C. If Kenny Rogers wasn’t enough, country fans will also be excited to see Carrie Underwood at the John Paul Jones arena during part of her The Storyteller Tour. For information on other fall shows and series, such as the Glenn Miller Orchestra at The Paramount Theater and the Latin Ballet of Virginia at Piedmont Virginia Community College (PVCC), check out our calendar at CharlottesvilleWelcomeBook.com.

Boutiques & Specialty Shops Glorious Shopping!
S hop L ocally
Charlottesville is a small city, but it boasts a big selection when it comes to shopping, from specialty boutiques offering an eclectic array of wares to favorite designer lines from popular national shops. Whether you are on a quest for an autumn dress or the perfect birthday gift, such as a silver or pewter Jefferson cup or a painting by a local artist of the breathtaking Albemarle countryside to commemorate your visit, you are sure to find something unique and wonderful. Take a walk along Charlottesville’s Historic Downtown Mall, a pedestrian-only walkway first created in the 1970s. Here you can browse among the 120 charming shops along the brick-paved streets. Beyond the downtown area, Charlottesville has several distinct shopping areas that offer a great selection. Check out the stores along the Route 29/Emmet Street corridor, from as far north as Hollymead to south of the University of Virginia. You’ll find everything from large, nationally-known stores to locally-owned shops that reflect the individual flavor and style of our community. Travel along Route 250 from Pantops Mountain to Crozet to discover more shopping districts and beautiful scenery. With the abundance of choice, finding the perfect summer ensemble, decor or gifts will be both easy and fun!

Boutiques & Specialty Shops Locally Crafted Local artisans are popular in Charlottesville and the surrounding communities. Plan your itinerary with the help of the Artisans Center of Virginia (ACV), the state’s official nonprofit craft organization dedicated to promoting Virginia artisans. The ACV’s Monticello Artisan Trail is a map of destinations within the city of Charlottesville and throughout Albemarle and Nelson Counties, that designates more than 80 regional artisan studios, craft venues, orchards, vineyards, farms, restaurants, lodging and more.

A diverse range of Central Virginia’s unique traditions and talents are represented on the trail—from a leather artist making custom personal and equestrian accessories by hand at a studio housed in an old train depot to a celebrated executive chef and decoy carver. Also be sure to drop in at some of the trail’s many businesses and craft venues that display and sell work from local ceramic artists, weavers and furniture makers. Exhibitions are always popping up in different locations, so be on your toes as you may just happen across one on the Downtown Mall! A stone’s throw away from the Downtown Mall is the city’s Farmer’s Market on the corner of Second and Water Streets every Saturday from MayOctober, offering handmade, homegrown or home baked items by locals.

Becoming a Local Welcome, Newcomers!
N ewcomer ’ s S pecial S ection

Congratulations on choosing Charlottesville as your new home! Nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, your new community is known for year-round natural beauty and small-city sophistication. Charlottesville has received countless accolades in recent years for a variety of reasons — from its delicious, locally sourced restaurants to its active, sports-centric community. USA Today featured Charlottesville as a great place to invest in a home. “Take one of the nation’s quintessential college towns, throw in a big slice of American history, add golf courses and wineries, set it all in prime horse country, and the result is Charlottesville,” says Larry Olmsted for USA Today. We couldn’t agree more!
Charlottesville’s geographic proximity in the center of Virginia provides residents with far more than just the gentle rivers, rolling pastures, mild seasons and an easy, two-and-a-half-hour drive to Washington, D.C. or the Atlantic coast. But “green” doesn’t just describe the rolling hills that surround Charlottesville. Green is a way of life for our eco-conscious residents, businesses and local government. Charlottesville is leading the way to a healthier, cleaner future in Virginia and has been recognized with the Governor’s Environmental Excellence Award. Now that you know a little more about all the great local offerings, turn to page 65 for details on how to get settled in your new home. Welcome to

The Scoop on UVA The University of Virginia is a bastion of tradition founded by Thomas Jefferson, the most popular man in town. Those who are fond of him often refer to him as TJ or Mr. Jefferson. Whether you’re preparing to enter its hallowed halls for a degree or enjoying a weekend in town, here is your guide to local lingo. We proudly cheer on our Orange and Blue, “The Cavaliers” — “Cavs” for short, or “Wahoos.” What’s a Wahoo? Legend has it that Washington University of Virginia, Dan Addison, VA Public Aff. & Lee baseball fans dubbed the UVA players “wahoos” during their fierce in-state rivalry back in the 1890s. By 1940, “Wahoos” was in general use to denote the University students or events relating to them. The abbreviated “Hoos” sprang up later in student newspapers. The area on which UVA sits is called “Grounds,” not “campus,” and freshmen here are called “first-years.” The large, domed building with Mr. Jefferson’s great statue is the Rotunda, and its recent renovation and restoration project of the nearly 200-year-old structure has helped it remain at the heart of the University’s academic mission. It faces a huge grass courtyard known as “The Lawn,” surrounded by historic residences that are still coveted student and faculty residences. From the steps of the Rotunda, you can see “The Corner,” the area located at the intersection of University Avenue and the central entrance to UVA, the Honor Gate. Always abustle, the Corner has a great selection of casual restaurants with college prices and trendy shops that give it a cool vibe.

Why Not Retire Here? With a temperate climate, beautiful scenery, expert medical care and a thriving cultural environment, it should come as no surprise that Charlottesville is a popular retirement location. Learning institutions such as Piedmont Virginia Community College and UVA’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) offer courses to suit all interests. OLLI even offers outings to international destinations in Europe, Memphis, Greece, Brazil and Costa Rica. Many local gyms and fitness facilities offer senior classes, and the golf courses, tennis courts and walking trails are very popular, too. Where to Retire magazine recently named Charlottesville as one of the country’s “Dynamic Locales For Walkable Living.” Plus, there are many rewarding volunteer opportunities available locally, and our award-winning Senior Center has a great mix of programs and travel choices, such as a jaunt to Nashville or a trip to Ireland. Charlottesville is also proud to be home to two great medical centers, the University of Virginia Health System and Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital, both offering outstanding health care on the cutting edge of medicine. With the Charlottesville Albemarle Airport as a convenient gateway to a world of destinations and the coast only a couple of hours away, it’s no wonder Money Magazine rated Charlottesville as the No. 2 place to retire young! And for those with school-age children, not only are the public school systems exceptional, but our area boasts more private-school opportunities per capita than most, offering everything from competitive college-prep programs (with boarding options) to schools based on the teachings of alternative leaders in education. Ever hear of the “McGuffey Reader,” one of the best-known early school books? A celebrated community leader and profound contributor to education, “McGuffey Reader” author William H. McGuffey spent the last 28 years of his life in Charlottesville, was a professor at UVA, and is buried on the University Grounds. There’s no doubt that education is emphasized throughout our community. Learn all about Charlottesville’s educational opportunities at CharlottesvilleFamily.com.

Charlottesville, named for Queen Charlotte Sophia of England and founded in 1762, is an inspiring setting to call home. Albemarle County’s historic roots extend equally as far. The county is named in honor of William Anne van Keppel. He was the second Earl of Albemarle and served as Governor General of the county from 1734 to 1735. The first Photo credit: Jennifer Jones county seat was located in Scottsville. In 1761, however, county government was moved to Charlottesville, which was established as a town in 1762 and as a city in 1888. One reason Charlottesville has so many transplanted residents is that it’s a small city—just over 10.4 square miles, with approximately 45,000 residents—but it has the trappings of a big one. Musical acts and dramatic performances, fine dining, lovely shops — all are available in abundance. Covering 726 square miles, the county’s population is more than double that of the city, at about 101,000. Both city and county are fascinating places to explore and wonderful locales to call home, and we welcome you!
