MESSENGER
Dear Friends, As we move more deeply into the 143rd year of our ministry here in the Coastal Bend, we at Incarnate Word Academy continue to prepare ourselves and our students to accept joyfully Jesus’ invitation to serve. The most foundational core value of our life, and of all of Catholic education, is SERVICE. I was recently going through a series of “old” notes, papers/books, as I am known to do during my cleaning sprees, and I came across a folder of information that I had mislaid for at least the last seven years or so. Perhaps, you have had the same experience – stumbling on an “old treasure” that you knew you held on to for a reason, but whose importance seems to have been supplanted by another distraction? In short, I have rediscovered some resources about the role and challenge of Catholic education in the 21st century. I say rediscovered because the knowledge in the pages is not new. However, as more years have passed in my own life’s journey, somehow it seems ever-new! A bolded line on a handout of a talk I heard a number of years ago caught my attention. The purpose of the Christian life and of any Catholic educational endeavor is to reclaim the ideal: in order to really gain anything in life, you must give your life away! Well, that is a line that can shake any of us to the core. What are we entrusted to teach the next generation of educated Christians? In order to have life forever, or “gain” your life, you must “lose” it by giving it away! How difficult is that task to understand, absorb, and live! Yet, isn’t that exactly the ideal to which Jesus calls us, to which Jeanne de Matel points us, and within which we find real meaning and life? As you page through this edition of The Messenger, you will no doubt experience how far we have come in the last 143 years and perhaps how far we still have to travel. I hope that you will also embrace with us the common task for the future: to embrace the gift that has been given to us. The gift is JESUS CHRIST! Let us know him more intimately, love Him more deeply, and REFLECT JESUS to all! Gratefully,
Charles D. Imbergamo President and CEO

Siblings Place in National Essay Contest
What is Campus Ministry?
James Matl and Christina Matl recently placed in the 25th Annual Maryknoll Student Essay Contest. This year’s theme for the national contest was “The Pope, The Poor, and You.” James received 3rd place and Christina received 4th place. James wrote about the mission team’s 2013 volunteer work in Big Wells and Asherton, Texas. James was presented with an award in March by Father Gerald Kelly of Houston. At the presentation, James shared his essay aloud and described how the mission team helped others in those towns with projects such as painting homes, creating stairs to a family’s front door, and so much more.
The Campus Ministry program is a unique and valuable asset to the campus as a whole. Sister Rosa Ortiz, IWBS, works to assist students in their individual faith journeys. As the high school level’s campus minister, Sister Rosa works with students to plan retreats, service projects, and liturgies. I am here to provide a space for students to be able to express their faith.
Campus Ministry and Missions
- Sister Rosa Ortiz, High School Level Campus Minister
At each campus level, the purpose of campus ministry is to be a medium for the students of Incarnate Word Academy to mature in and strengthen their faith, while emphasizing the importance of living out the Gospel values.
Angels Serve Others During Holy Week Throughout Holy Week, the high school level mission team continued living out the Gospel message by volunteering in other communities. A large portion of the mission team traveled to Asherton, Batesville, Big Wells, and La Pryor, Texas – two more communities in comparison to the team’s Holy Week trip in 2013. Students spent a week performing manual labor such as constructing porches, stairs, and ramps for those in the community who were in need. This year included an evangelical aspect through a focus on home visits to the elderly, a live performance of the Stations of the Cross in each respective town, and coordination of Easter activities for local children. In Corpus Christi, several members of the mission team volunteered at local parishes, fed the homeless, and participated in live performances of the Stations of the Cross. Many people think that Missions is about changing the lives of others, but it is the smiles and gratitude of the people I help that change my life. - Jacob Bartlett, 2013-2014 Senior Missions Leader

Alumni Homecoming Reunion Weekend Alumni came from near and far to celebrate the 2013 Incarnate Word Academy and Corpus Christi College Academy Alumni Homecoming Reunion Weekend, from November 21 - 24, 2013. The weekend was held in conjunction with IWA’s homecoming festivities, which allowed alumni to reunite to celebrate their lifelong bonds with each other and the school. Alumni were treated to complimentary goodie bags, mums, garters, and pom poms upon check in November 21, 2013 at the Alumni Reunion Headquarters, compliments of Christine Canterbury, M.D. ’84 and Benjamin Supnet, M.D. ’86 of the Corpus Christi Women’s Clinic. The alumni mingled with students, faculty, staff, parents, and grandparents in the festival area, where they enjoyed live music and food. At sunset, the crowd moved to the newly renovated Austin Street Athletic Complex to enjoy the tradition of the Burning of the “A” Ceremony. The evening show stopper was the Alumni versus Alumni Basketball Game, sponsored by Dr. and Mrs. John Michael Raimondo, D.C. ’88. Alumni from classes ranging from 1973 2013 returned to the Mother Patricia Gunning Gymnasium to support both teams. The group of alumni players featured some fabulous multi-generational and family ties including: father and sons Mark Busker ’80 and Matthew Busker ’09, and Benito Tamez, CCCA ’73 and John Tamez ’05; John’s wife Anika Page-Tamez ’05; twin brothers Michael Skrobarczyk ’05 and Jason Skrobarczyk ’05; sisters Christina Lopez ‘05 and Marissa Lopez ’08, and Patrcia Perrone ’87 and Nina Trigger Perrone ’89; and husband and wife Jeremiah Narvaez ’00 and Monica Benavides Narvaez ’99. Both teams enjoyed reuniting with each other and with their high school coaches, Malcolm Smith and Casper Wenzel. The bleachers were packed with enthusiastic alumni holding pom poms and signs to cheer on players from their class years. In the end, it was a win for Coach Smith’s red team. The evening wrapped up with the presentation of commemorative medals to the players and the traveling Alumni versus Alumni Basketball Game Trophy to Coach Smith.

Montessori Level Welcomes Families The annual Montessori Family Night was held for families currently enrolled in the elementary level’s Montessori program. To support the IWA perspective for teaching the whole child, IWA strives to partner closely with parents in the education process. Events such as the Montessori Family Night help strengthen the student-parent-educator relationship by providing parents hands-on knowledge of their child’s school day. Our Montessori Family Night is an opportunity to come together to learn about the Montessori philosophy of education,...The more that we as parents know and understand what Montessori is, the more we come to appreciate it and support it at home.
- Blanca Cummins, Elementary Level-Montessori Director
At the Montessori Family Night, families enjoyed the opportunity to break bread over a potluck dinner. After dinner, the children headed out for games and play time while parents listened to a presentation titled “Grace and Courtesy across the Planes of Development,” which was presented by Elementary Level-Montessori Teacher Mrs. Mary Ellen Galvan. In addition, grandparents and contributors were recognized during Mass and a reception was held in their honor. “I think it’s important to recognize our contributors and grandparents,” junior Natasha Villagomez said. “Our grandparents, who are our older generation, helped start our personal foundation and our school’s contributors help build on that foundation by donating to our school.”

Sophomores are First to Receive Scholarship The Dr. Hector P. Garcia Memorial Foundation awarded two scholarships to its first recipients of the Dr. Hector P. Garcia and Wanda Fusillo Garcia Scholarship. The scholarships were presented to sophomores Gabriella Vargas and Alexsander Villagomez in January at the Corpus Christi Cathedral’s St. Joseph’s Hall. The presentation was held following the Dr. Hector P. Garcia Memorial Mass at the Cathedral. Each recipient read an essay on how Dr. Garcia has influenced their lives. Gabriella and Alexsander were chosen as the scholarship’s first recipients. They each received a $5,000 scholarship to be used towards their junior and senior year tuition at IWA. The Dr. Hector P. Garcia Memorial Foundation first announced the scholarship to the IWA community on September 18, 2013 – the Texas state recognition of Dr. Hector P. Garcia Day as set forth by the Texas Legislature. Incarnate Word Academy was chosen as the Foundation’s first recipient because of the Academy’s commitment to excellence in education and its close personal relationship with the family of Dr. Garcia. All of Dr. Garcia’s daughters are graduates of IWA and Dr. Garcia was the personal physician of the Sisters of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament for many years. The Dr. Hector P. Garcia Memorial Foundation was organized to educate state-wide and national communities about the continuing historical relevance and legacy of Dr. Garcia. Additionally the Foundation encourages and promotes the continuation of his ideals through establishing charitable projects and education scholarships, and by working with various universities to support those whom the foundation believes share and actively strive to promote the same ideals that Dr. Garcia held so dear. William Oliver “Ollie” Rumley January 14, 2008 – February 2, 2014
She found that children speak God’s message of love and peace in their work, their play, and their prayer. She experienced that great love and prayer during her illness with cancer and found the strength and peace to give her life over to Jesus. Mother: Dubelia Cardona. Sisters: Effie (Joseph) Obregon, Alison Diana (Roland) Torres, Irene (Charles) Scheuer, Bernadette (Karl) Gibson. Nephews: Woody (Denise) Salazar, Karl Gibson Jr., Seth Gibson, Austin Salazar, Zander Salazar. Niece: Teri Salazar.
William Oliver Rumley was a very special little boy. Ollie, as he was known, blessed his family and friends in this world with his presence for six years. Ollie is the son of David and Sherry Rumley and the brother of Zachary and Jack Rumley, who are both IWA students. He graduated from the Rise School and was in Mrs. Mary Galvan’s primary classroom at IWA. He was a loving son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin, and friend. Throughout his short life, he had a special, deep spiritual connection with God. Even in his last days, he talked about Heaven and loving Jesus, and told his family and classmates how much he loved them. At his requiem, Ollie’s mother shared this wisdom: The most important part of anyone’s life is the dash, the line between when you were born and when you go to Heaven. The dash in Ollie’s life is a short one, but wide and strong. He taught those who were blessed to travel the path with him many beautiful lessons. He was a rule follower and we can best honor his memory in our lives by living by these Ollie Rules:
1. Love deeper and openly. 2. Laugh more. 3. View the world with wide-open, curious eyes. 4. Live your life loving God – That’s the Ollie way.
A fellow classmate commented that she had never seen Ollie do a mean thing to anyone. He was filled with love and showed kindness all the time. We grieve that we don’t have him with us still, but we cherish our memories. Ollie and his way of being are a pure gift.

MESSENGER
Spotlights
FACULTY SPOTLIGHT
Joe L. Hernandez
Joe L. Hernandez has been a band director at IWA for 10 years and with CCISD for 27 years. He is happily married to his wife, Debra C. Hernandez, of 37 years. Debra is a biology teacher at IWA.
What is your favorite thing about the greater IWA community? The relationship with faculty, staff, administration, students, parents, and alumni is like a large family.
What motivates you to work in Catholic education? Being on the campus that has the Holy Eucharist at its center and helping with music for campuswide Masses.
Do you have a favorite memory from IWA? The reactions from the band students at winning our first TAPPS State Concert Band Sweepstakes in 2009!
Is there something you are willing to share about yourself that people would be surprised to find out? Yes, I have been a USPTA-certified tennis pro for many years. I have been a tennis pro with the Corpus Christi Athletic Club, Corpus Christi Estates Park, King’s Crossing Country Club, and Del Mar Athletics Department. Also, I assisted with the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Lady Islander tennis team.
What is your favorite thing about IWA students? IWA students are very bright and talented.
BOARD MEMBER SPOTLIGHT Sammie Herro Grunwald has been a member of the IWA School Board and Board Operations Committee for the past two years. In the past, she has also served on the Advancement and Marketing Committee.
Sammie Herro Grunwald
What company are you employed by and what position do you hold? I work at the CHRISTUS Spohn Health System Foundation as the Manager of Annual Giving, where I am blessed to be able to help generous people do remarkable things with their gifts.
Who are your family members? My daughter, Hannah Louise Grunwald, graduated from IWA in 2012 and currently attends Texas A&M University in College Station. What motivates you to serve on the IWA School Board? My daughter started in Sister Marian Bradley’s class at 3 years old. By the time she graduated, I was so in love with the school and the Sisters that I was happy to change from longtime PTO mom to board member.
What is your vision for education in the IWA community? IWA does a remarkable job of preparing students for college. The growing dual-credit course options are very beneficial to students who can start their college career with several credits in hand. What message would you like to give to the IWA community? As parents, we know that we are not tasked with raising children — we are raising adults. At IWA, our children grow into responsible community members who are compassionate, diligent, and respectful.
ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT Adam Farrell started at IWA in Ms. Loretta Zarria’s kindergarten class in 1980. He graduated in 1993. Did any other family members attend IWA? What person/faculty member made the biggest impact on your life while at IWA? By far the faculty member who made the biggest impact on my life then and today is Coach Casper Wenzel. His work ethic and commitment to those he serves is something I strive to recreate in my business and my life. Biography: I am married to Prudence Garrison Farrell. We have two children, Logan, our 6-year-old daughter, and Brady, our 4-year-old son. After graduating from IWA, I earned my B.S. and M.S. from Texas A&M
University-Corpus Christi. I have been in business for myself for 8 years. The name of my business is Pinnacle Performance and Fitness. We help people get into the best shape of their lives. I am currently on the American Diabetes Association Board of Directors as well as the Board of Directors for Youth Odyssey. To help raise awareness and money for local non-profits, my company offers a monthly “Workout for a Cause” where clients and the public can come and get a workout in our gym for $10. All the money raised goes back to the organization.
Investing in our values, education, and future leaders.
