INCARNATE WORD ACADEMY FOUNDATION NEWSLETTER WINTER 2022
A LEGACY OF LIVING YOUR FAITH: A MATTER OF DEEDS
By Mary Nicholas Morgan ‘70
Passing through our neighborhood when I was a very young girl, I asked my mother what ‘that’ was (that clearly being an elementary school with children going in and out, playing at recess on the playgrounds). She told me it was Wilson Elementary School and that was a public school for neighborhood children. I asked, “well, why don’t I go there?” She responded that it was a ‘privilege’ that I went to St. Patrick’s School (along with my brothers). I suppose I didn’t understand the concept of privilege so she further explained that they pay taxes so there are good neighborhood public schools (such as she and my father attended) but that they thought it important enough to save their money so that we could be educated well not only in the fundamentals but also in our faith.
My education at IWA provided a good academic foundation with dedicated teachers that knew your capabilities and expected your work to match them. It provided ample opportunities to explore interests in the elective courses and leadership opportunities in extra-curricular activities. Daily occasions (in religion classes) were provided to explore topical matters where almost anything could be discussed as long as you could support your argument and do so respectfully.
After both my parents had passed away, I began doing genealogical research and realized I knew little about their history except that they were both first-generation Americans. Their story is like many (most) immigrant stories – coming to this country to escape extreme poverty, looking for an opportunity and having faith that this would be the case.
My grandparents (who were long deceased by the time I was born) on both sides of the family emigrated from Ireland. Ship manifests show they had little (next to nothing) as assets. Many of them paid for siblings (up to 10) and parents to immigrate. All eventually landed in Chicago, IL.
Both my parents each lost a parent very early in life. They went to public schools. Within a few years of graduating high school, both of my parents served during WWII – my father in the Navy, my mother as a WAC where she was stationed in Marseilles, France. Following the war, they married, left their siblings, and moved to Corpus Christi. My father and a buddy from the war searched for good locations to start a business and they settled on Corpus Christi. He and his partner ran Auto Motor Exchange on S. Port Ave for 35 years. My parents were active in a number of Catholic and civic associations (lifelong members of St. Patrick’s Church, St. Patrick’s Men’s Club, Knights of Columbus, Spohn Hospital, Port Ave. Businessmen’s Association) and humbly lived their faith while quietly helping those less fortunate.
St. Paul said, “What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works?... So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.” From my education and being a confirmed Catholic means your faith is a matter of deeds, not words. What a great example my parents were of this.
I cannot imagine a better tribute to both my parents than this scholarship to IWA in their names - Agnes E. and Patrick W. Nicholas Scholarship. To provide a student assistance with tuition so that they can have the “privilege” to attend IWA and learn in such an environment would absolutely delight both Agnes and P.W.

Charles F. McCauley Scholarship in memory of Charles C. McCauley
The strong educational legacy of Incarnate Word Academy has thrived for more than 150 years because of the essential and strong partnerships established between the Sisters of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament and members of the school community. Meaningful relationships with IWA’s many alumni, parents, grandparents, past parents, and friends continue to provide key support for today’s students and faculty.
One particular partnership that has richly blessed the IWA community is shared with the McCauley Family. It all began with Charles F. McCauley, or “Mr. Mac” as he was affectionately known, who selflessly and regularly contributed his time, talent, and treasure to both the school and the convent.
In gratitude for Mr. Mac’s steadfast support, and as a testament to his bond with the Sisters, Sister Brigid O’Neil created a beautiful wood carving on a mahogany desk that featured emblems and designs representing the history and lives of Mr. and Mrs. McCauley. The mahogany desk, which was originally acquired by a World War I veteran while stationed in the Philippines, had been gifted to her in 1966. In circa 1975, Sr. Brigid presented the desk with her fine carvings which included the harbor bridge, ships passing, oil wells, the Sisters’ emblem, and more, to Mr. Mac who cherished the special desk for his lifetime and is now proudly displayed at the office of his grandson, William “Bill” McCauley, II.
As a lasting tribute to the McCauley Family legacy, The Charles F. McCauley Scholarship was established in memory of Charles C. McCauley to help ensure the gift of a Catholic education continues for generations to come.

ANNUAL REPORT - 2021-2022
The Incarnate Word Academy Foundation was established in 1989 by the Sisters of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament to provide adequate funding for scholarships and educational development solely for Incarnate Word Academy in Corpus Christi, Texas. It serves as a stable ongoing way of assuring tuition assistance for years to come by providing an entity for receiving and managing the contributions of donors according to their intent. The IWA Foundation is committed to scholarships and tuition assistance grants, faculty professional growth, and quality Catholic education into the future. Inviting the school community, past parents, friends, and benefactors to partner with the Sisters through the Foundation in providing a quality education in a Catholic school environment has been a blessing to all concerned — the Sisters, the IWA family, and the larger community.
The 2021-2022 Incarnate Word Academy Foundation Report is presented by the Trustees of the Foundation to express appreciation to donors and to practice good stewardship of the resources entrusted to our care. This report is published separately to recognize the distinction between Incarnate Word Academy and the Incarnate Word Academy Foundation, a funding source separate from the annual financial management of the school.
We are grateful to those who have contributed to the Incarnate Word Academy Foundation through scholarships, memorials, and bequests. We ask God’s blessings on you and your families.

The Incarnate Word Academy Scholarship Program began in 1978. Scholarships are a powerful way to make a difference in the lives of others and help keep Incarnate Word Academy accessible to as many students as possible.
A permanent scholarship is established with a minimum of $10,000 as an endowed fund within the Incarnate Word Academy Foundation. The principal of the fund is invested and a portion of the earned interest is distributed to qualifying students, preserving the principal to generate future awards.
Scholarships enrich student life at Incarnate Word Academy and support the school in perpetuity, helping to build ongoing funds to sustain IWA in the years to come. Donors are encouraged to make additional contributions to current permanent scholarship finds in order to increase the fund and earnings amounts over time.
Names following the individual scholarships are the donors for the 2021-2022 fiscal year.

The Planned Giving Program provides opportunities for donors to promote and enhance Catholic education at Incarnate Word Academy as part of their legacy. One of the popular and exciting plans that partners use to strengthen our mission is the IWA Forever program. The IWA Forever program gives loyal alumni, families, and friends of Incarnate Word Academy the ability to ensure that their average annual giving continues forever upon their death.
To advance the mission of the Sisters of the Incarnate Word in making Jesus known and loved through education, the IWA Forever initiative allows alumni, family, and friends of Incarnate Word Academy to leave a lasting legacy that extends their Catholic education partnership into the future.

SCHOLARSHIP DONOR RECOGNITION
On March 25, 2022, the IWA community gathered at Mass celebrating the Feast of the Annunciation, presided by Fr. John Gafney. After closing prayer, Sister Annette Wagner, Superior General and President of the Incarnate Word Academy Foundation, took to the podium to introduce special guests of honor. An awards and signing ceremony was conducted at a reception immediately following Mass.
In total, the Incarnate Word Academy Foundation inducted eight donors into the Precious Stones Supporting the Mission Recognition Society. These distinct awards honor those who have cumulatively contributed a minimum of $10,000 up to $250,000 or more to the scholarship program. Special recognition was also given to eight scholarships that reached permanent status.
1. James Akers and Cecilia Garcia Akers’70 formalize the establishment of the Dr. Hector P. and Wanda F. Garcia Scholarship.

SCHOLARSHIP DONOR APPRECIATION
After a two year absence caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, The Incarnate Word Academy Foundation Trustees and school community enthusiastically welcomed scholarship donors back on campus for a series of donor appreciation breakfasts. These gatherings, which were held in April, 2022, provided a wonderful opportunity for our scholarship recipients to meet the contributors who have made their education possible.
Benefactors traveled from near and far to join us in celebrating the gift of a Catholic education. Scholarships continue to play a vital role in keeping tuition affordable and our student body diverse. In fact, this extreme generosity kept IWA’s doors open to nearly 40% of the students who were enrolled for the 2021-2022 school year.

Through our achievements, we continuously push each other to be the best students that we can be. I can confidently say that I would not be the person I am today if I could not attend Incarnate Word Academy.”
