HIPF
The Graduation Ceremony for the fourth, fifth and sixth batches of HIPF trainees was held on the 10th of December, 2011. The graduation rite was sponsored by his Excellency Eng. Adel Bin Mohammed Al-Fakieh, Minister, MOL (Ministry of Labor). The ceremony was presided upon by his Excellency Dr.Ali bin Nasser Al-Ghafees, the Chairman of the Board of Directors of HIPF and Governor of the Technical and Vocational Training Corporation (TVTC) who awarded the Diploma certificates to the graduating trainees. The highly honored HIPF Board members and the esteemed owners or managers of about 40 trainee sponsoring companies were also among our most respected and welcome guests. Our trainee’s sponsoring companies have effectively supported our efforts in transforming our graduates into efficient employees for furthering Saudization in the plastics fabrication industry Second Graduation Ceremony at HIPF
Injection Molded Car Wheels Injection molded wheel is a polymer-based innovation for Smart Forvision electric concept car, developed by Daimler and BASF. Smart Forvision concept car was launched at the Frankfurt motor show in Germany on September 2011. It is a joint development between car maker Daimler and chemicals group BASF intended to show how light weight design ideas can contribute to the energy efficient electric vehicles of the future. Among the polymer based innovations packed into this compact car are Injection molded thermoplastic wheels together with a number of light weight interior and exterior body parts and use of thermal management glazing films. The car’s wheel rims are made of two injection molded parts that are produced by Hummel Formen in Lenningen in BASF’s Ultramid Structure 50% long glass fibre reinforced PA6. BASF claims the plastic rims are the first of their kind to be capable of use in full serial production cars. They also lower weight by 3kg per wheel – or 12kg for the whole car. Making vehicles lighter will be one of the key challenges for electric mobility in the future, says BASF.

PBT from R ecycled PET PVC window profiles have many benefits making them a popular choice of window in the global markets. PVC-U windows and doors are tough, durable with a long life, low maintenance and come in a range of designs, colors and textures. PVC window profile producers are working on enhancements of durability, weathering, higher strength, widening of processing window, higher throughput. All these parameters are driving the developments of additives. Some of the newer developments are:

• Paraloid KM X100 acrylic impact modifier from Dow provides higher impact strength, higher gloss and wider processing window. Paraloid KM 370 impact modifier from Dow to provide better gloss in mixed metal stabilization of PVC window profiles typically used in Europe. • Thermolite® 150 butyl tin stabilizer from Arkema provides higher thermal stability, and offers high output extrusion . It is a cost-effective, mid-range butyl stabilizer displaying good color hold with outstanding stability and weathering properties.
• Arkema’s acrylic-based Durastrength® acrylic impact modifiers are free flowing powders designed to deliver optimum cost/performance in PVC profile, siding, fence, pipe and injection molding compounds. Durastrength® products offer superb weatherability, improved processing with better flow, more even pigment dispersion and heat stability, as well as greater impact strength even at low temperatures. They can be used as a high efficiency modifier system for siding, window profile and pipe fitting and conduit, and is suitable for all outdoor/weatherable PVC applications. • Arkema’s Clearstrength® 320 is an MBS impact modifier designed for use in clear packaging and profile applications where quick fusion, and added impact strength is desirable. Clearstrength® 320 gives excellent lot to lot consistency, uniform color hold, high impact strength and low gel levels. Improved additives available nowadays help PVC window profile producers meet requirements for increasing performance and for reducing manufacturing costs.

A pp for P lastics Fabrication i Moulder is a new free app for i-phone users that provides instant access to a range of basic Injection molding process data and problem solving tips. Designed for use by molding professionals, mold makers and product Designers, the program includes a basic materials guide listing generic processing data for a range of common materials. An Injection solutions section helps resolve common processing problems and also has a database of polymer grades and manufacturers. ‘imtech design’ operates the full suite of Moldflow programs for injection moulding advice and can help solve most Injection molding problems. The program is developed by UK- based injection molding process simulation company ‘Imtech Design’ and can be downloaded from the iTunes app store.

N ucleating Agent for PE Officially introduced at the K show last October 2010 by Milliken, Hyper form HPN-20E already has made its way into commercial use, according to officials at the firm. Processors of extruded films, blow molded bottles, and injection molded closures all are taking advantage of the new additive to help cut their cycle times and drive productivity improvements. Nucleation of polyethylene has been mentioned in scientific journals for decades but it has not been commercially successful till now. The additive can be used in high-density polyethylene (HDPE) used in blown film, extrusion blow molding and injection molding, as well as in linear low density PE (LLDPE), especially C4 gas phase LLDPE. It works by raising the peak crystallization temperature of PE and significantly increasing the rate of crystallization, which means parts can be de-molded faster in injection molding and extrusion blow molding, and line speeds can be increased in blown film extrusion.

C4 gas phase LLDPE, the additive could enable processors to reduce the amount of LDPE used in a typical LLDPE/LDPE blend solution where LDPE is used to improve optics and not melt strength. HDPE barrier film for cereal & dry food packaging; HDPE extrusion blow molded personal care bottles, with the agent offering cycle time reduction; injection molded closures for cycle time reduction and pigment leveling; HDPE extrusion blow molded for pigment leveling and cycle time reduction; MDPE in rotomolding for cycle time reduction, and in LLDPE for clarification on agricultural film. Hyper form HPN-20E is commercially available worldwide as a powder additive or as a master batch.

Cycle time reductions, thinner walls, better clarity, better water vapor barrier are among its many advantages.
E lectric I njection M olding M achine Working principle Instead of being driven by a hydraulic system, all electric machine use digitally controlled high speed and highly efficient servo motors to drive the whole process. Each function is controlled by an independent motor for injection, dosing, clamping and ejection. Advantages of all electric injection molding • Energy consumption for an all-electric machine can be reduced by 50-70% over that for a hydraulic machine. Unlike hydraulic injection molding machine, which use energy even while idle, all electric injection molding machine consume energy only when required for a given action, and motor out put is matched to load requirements. • Process control is good, since there is no hydraulic fluid to heat up or compresses no hoses that expand. • Less maintenance, because there is more reliable, with fewer parts. • More suitable for clean room operations. (for medical, food packaging, electronic) • All electric machines reduce central chiller system capacity and load. • Quiet operation- less noise level.
