Geometrical Morphologies of Spaces for Performance S t r u c t u r e M o r p h o g e n e s i s

..About Architectur.. it is ”fighting against gravit”. Renzo Piano

Base concept

A building without a dream is just a building. Focal point A focal point is a design feature that makes an architectural experience

meaningful. As an architectural element, it provides a goal for our explorations.

It acts as a reason for our investigation of form and space. It anchors

architectural composition. A focal point may incorporate symbolism, as with an altar in a religion places or a fireplace that attracts the company of friends and family. Or it may simply be an

abstract emphasis within the total spatial experience.

A building with a dream is architecture.

Design Vision

Keep Existing Connections High walk The option creates potential to connect the Highwalk to the Centre for Music and also to connect the Highwalk to

street level. The Highwalk can connect to the upper levels of the Centre for Music

and the public spaces of the Core, which

also provides the opportunity to bring the Highwalk to street level.

Introduce The Core Plaza and Boulevard The main plaza aims to integrate the new components of music centre. It acts

as a node, promoting a smooth flow of internal circulation as well as external

circulation. To further improve mobility

within the site, a drop-off to the plaza is

acting as the main drop-off for the whole building. It also acts as a buffer between the spaces. Ground level activities are

introduced such as alfresco dining and

retail to cater to the guests and visitors

focus on providing the right environment with a significant number of choir

and audience seats behind the stage,

there will be scope for a different kind of intimacy and a more immersive

audience experience. This will allow the

performance of major, large scale works.

Income Generation Commercial area Income generation is a key aspect of the next phase will look at the overall

income potential of the organisations, particularly in relation to commercial potential. As previously stated, the Barbican has successfully built a

professional, sales driven commercial

function successfully growing its income streams. With the Centre for Music and a significant increase in potential, the

next phase can examine how assets can

be used to grow current income streams and build new activities delivering additional income.

the same level as the stalls will allow a between stage and audience, in an

intimate and transparent relationship.

Rheotomic Surfaces

The concept Rheotomic surface’s

vertical points of the helicoid. Finally

involves the mathematical generation

a separate algorithm is necessary

was developed by Daniel Piker and

of ‘walkable’ interconnected surfaces. With ‘Rheo’ from the Greek for flow

and ‘Tomos’ meaning cut or section

these surfaces make an equivalence

between the geometry of the helicoid surface ad the vortex in Laplace’s

equation. Through plotting clockwise and counter-clockwise helical points

in x and y on a mesh plane, a chain of real and imaginary components from

complex numbers can be generated, in turn making it possible to then plot the

to allow the surface to be connected to remove the unnecessary surface excess.

Facade Pattern

Triangulation In this project, the application is

superficial as a building skin and does not have a responsibility to perform

environmentally as a passive or active

system. This being the case, the project purposefully and specifically reflects on the affective potential of contemporary building facades.
