International Women’s Club of Sofia
Charity
Bazaar 2016
Dear Supporters As president of the International women’s Club of Sofia, I once again have the pleasure to announce that the total amount we raised through our annual Charity bazaar was more than 375,000 leva, this was significantly more than the previous year. The 22nd Charity Bazaar did have longer opening hours and with more country stalls participating than ever before, we tried to offer new and exciting attractions for what is surely Sofia’s biggest and most wellknown charity event of the year. None of this is possible without the dedication and commitment of the members of IWC, together with all our volunteers and supporters and the generosity of you, our donors and partners who continue to promote our cause within the international and Bulgarian communities of Sofia. We really appreciate all who contribute to this event, but special thanks go to our official venue, the Inter Expo Center, who have consistently increased their support throughout the years. Also our great thanks to Maxim Behar and his team at M3 Communications who donated their time and expertise to promote our event and the causes we support. I would like to thank the ladies of the Bulgarian Rhythmic Gymnastics team who took time out to open our bazaar this year, they should be
an inspiration to everyone that hard work and dedication truly brings great rewards! My thanks also to the ambassadors and diplomatic staff, together with the international communities, who pledge their support every year with their time, experience and enthusiasm to bring the world to Sofia. Every year we have more and more countries wanting to join us in this wonderful experience. For the second year running my thanks and huge respect go to Toi Castello, our Bazaar Coordinator and her whole team, who are thinking of the organisation of this major event all through the year. The responsibility and work load is enormous and I cannot overestimate the magnitude of this task or the amount of gratitude that is owed. I know that we, the executive board of the IWC and our members and all of you, our volunteers, donors and partners all do this for one reason, to make a difference to the lives of many throughout Bulgaria and to show what is possible when the community and the world comes together, thank you for everything you do! With much gratitude Angela Bird IWC President 2015-2017

OPENING CEREMONY 22nd IWC CHARITY BAZAAR 4th December 2016 As every year, the official opening ceremony started at 10 am, before the doors were opened for the public at 10:30 am. As this was an Olympic year, the National Bulgarian Rhythmic Gymnastics team, who won the bronze medal in Rio, accepted our invitation to be our guests of honour. As strong dedicated young women, we felt they represented not only the spirit of our club, but those values we hope to inspire in the people we look to help through our funding projects in Bulgaria. This year, as well as inviting dignatories, diplomats and our donors, we offered the chance to anyone purchasing our new all inclusive ticket, this included not only the opening ceremony but early entrance
and shopping thus avoiding the queues at the door and with a glass of champagne and a goodybag thrown in! Preceding the opening our Guests were also treated to a Samba and Capoeira show courtesy of the Brazilian Embassy in Sofia, which transported us from the winter of Sofia directly to the party atmosphere of Rio. After the short speeches, the ribbon was cut by one of the members of the team and flowers of thanks were presented before a quick tour of the halls, as the main doors were opened and the bazaar came alive.

Dear friends, Another successful IWC Charity Bazaar. We are very proud of the results that reflect the great effort of thousands of volunteers, donors and partners that supported the 22nd IWC Charity Bazaar. We reached more than 290 000 lv on the day of the Bazaar alone. This was with the participation of 59 country stalls that represented 62 countries, 13 IWC supported charities from 2016 and 7 IWC stalls. This result represents 60,000 lv more than last year IN ONE DAY !!!!!! The Bazaar Team has worked very hard for such a great success. Since the month of May 2016, we started to meet and gather new ideas to improve the results and raise even more money than the previous year, to be distributed among Bulgarian Charities and Foundations. Keeping this in mind, we increased the opening hours to give the chance of attracting more visitors, around 11,000 this year, to enjoy the event even more and to contribute to our cause. This year is also the first time that we started to sell advance tickets online. With 80 stalls this year, including 10 more new countries compared to last year, we needed a bigger space so that everybody could participate. We had 2 halls at our Official Venue, the Inter Expo Center, and this year we had additional outside space, a Christmas Market with 8 more stalls and a stage area. Here we served hot drinks and food to taste while enjoying the performances at the stage. We especially thank the professional Bulgarian singers and groups that donated a concert to contribute to our cause. We could enjoy the great shows of X-Factor winner Christiana Loizu, singer and actor Orlin Pavlov, swing trio Sentimental Swingers and flamenco band Del Padre, together with the unforgettable voices of Bella Voce Quintet from Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra. The stage was hosted by Nasko, from BG Radio, not to forget other great Bulgarian singers at the inside stage like Ustata who supported the IWC Passport Special Tombola and Etien Levi.
sponsors and partners for their kind donations and support; all the volunteers that helped during all the process of the bazaar at their stalls. Especially the stallholders and all the children that are learning the importance of doing something for others whilst enjoyng it at the same time; all the artist, professionals and amateurs who shared their talent; all the members of the IWC who supported the event, and of course the bazaar team. It would not be possible to achieve such a good result and such an unforgettable event without these ladies who gave their time, effort and ideas to make it possible. It was an enormous teamwork that we all did with great pleasure and joy. Please allow me to name all of them: Ernesta , as assistant bazaar coordinator, Angelina, Maya and Tanya looking for donors and sponsors, Annamaria taking care of the donors logos and the advance tickets sales, Veronika coordinating the job of all volunteers, Anja with the amazing videos promoting the bazaar, Elisaveta as municipality and printing materials coordinator and organizing the concert with the special guests, Yana and Martina taking care of the workshop and inner stage, Johanna with the IWC Passport and Zarina and Marina at the office supporting the overall organization. And Aldona, our honorary member that every year supports the IWC Charity Bazaar from the Polish Embassy. It will not be possible either without the hard work of the IWC Executive Board. Angela was at any time my main support, she helped me to take the best decisions to get the best results; Kelsa organized the treasure room in such an excellent way that everything went very smoothly and perfect; Nadya supported the bazaar organization during all the process, the Facebook page and the IWC Stall together with Maria who coordinated the Charity stalls as well as all the proceeds of the workshop. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing all the volunteers working hard, the public enjoying the delicious food, eating and drinking all together, the kids dancing on the stage, lights, music, smells of love and joy, everybody wanting to help, everybody wanting to raise as much money as possible to help the others. There is nothing more rewarding than working to make others happy. THE WORLD CAME TO US ONCE AGAIN!!!!! Best regards,
It was a great pleasure to see how everybody brought their own small contribution to help the most vulnerable ones, mainly children and women in need. That’s why once again I would like to thank all the donors, 4

Dear friends and partners, With more than 65 countries and charity stalls contributing to the bazaar and for as long as it has been (2016 was our 22nd bazaar), this event has taken a life of its own and become one of the most anticipated occasions many look forward to each year in Sofia. At this particular bazaar, I cannot help but feel great pride in this unique endeavour, especially when looking at the mutual teamwork of the volunteers without whom all of this would not have been possible. The 22nd Charity Bazaar was the first bazaar I had personally been involved with. Volunteering from inside the bazaar itself surpassed everything I had imagined. It has been one of the toughest yet most fulfilling experiences I have ever encountered, and I have the feeling many of you shares this particular sentiment. Your donation, participation and dedication to this project truly and deeply emphasize the spirit and camaraderie of charity. I extend my praise and admiration to all the Bazaar participants who have worked so hard and meticulously to make this event run as smoothly as possible. Your ideas and efforts have brought
the bazaar to another level, one that we hope will continuously increase as the years pass. To my fellow board member, Toi Castello (Bazaar Coordinator): I applaud you for the enthusiasm and dedication you bring, which permeates this project from beginning to end. Thank you all for your continuous support to the bazaar. All this collaboration effort is evident for the success of the bazaar, where each year we continuously increase the amount of donation. Because of your generosity, time, power, effort and resources, we are able to further our mission in bettering the lives of those in need across Bulgaria. With gratitude and best wishes, Nadya Wuisan-Bratanova Vice President 2016-2017

Dear Donors and Partners, First of all I would like to thank you for your kind support! Your donations and efforts are greatly appreciated! The year of 2016 was a successful but challenging year for the Charity Foundation of International Women’s Club of Sofia. Our organization continued to assist Bulgarian groups and institutions to more effectively meet the needs of the most marginalized populations in the country, especially, but not exclusively - Women; The elderly; Children deprived of parental care; Those who are mentally or physically disabled and ethnic minorities. Diversification of project’s portfolio In 2016 we continue to make some significant improvements towards making the charity more open to different needs by adding new charities in our portfolio. This is a process that begun in 2012 as a response to the constantly changing environment on one hand, and on other hand that was our main goal to create a diverse portfolio of different projects. Accountability and Transparency The Charity Foundation of IWC is following the standards for accountability and transparency by providing regular information on what is happening in the Foundation through various tools: by publication of information in the newsletter n of the club, currently updating the information posted on IWC’s website, which is public and available to anyone interested; by announcing and publishing financial statements, presentations and meetings.
these new requirements, the Charity Foundation of IWC-Sofia has received a much more complete picture of who requested for funds, what are their needs, what is their financial stability and all that gives better security to us as an organization and hence guarantee our donors and partners that money goes to the right needs. Sustainability Another important goal for us was to continue to work for achieving more sustainability as a charity foundation. To be sustained means to continue to exist, now and in the future. Against a rapidly changing social, economic and political backdrop, the ability to adapt is vital in order to do this. For us, this means an ability to respond to shifting needs, be it those of donors, beneficiaries, or partners. Yet amid the many questions about the relationship between government and the charity sector, about the economy, policy or regulation, there is one certainty: that organization with a social purpose must adapt in order to survive. It is fair to say that the charity sector has undergone a profound level of change over the past few years, so does the Charity Foundation of International Women’s Club - Sofia. During the last year we as a charitable organization we continue to look for new strategies and opportunities to implement so the organization to become much stronger and help more beneficiaries in need. On the behalf of IWC Charity Foundation I would like to thank you for your generous support!
Application process and why is so important Since 2012 the leadership of the Charity Foundation developed new application procedures including application forms. The last update of the application forms were in December 2015 when the beneficiaries were required to provide information about their financial situation, to describe other resources of funding and clear descriptions of the project. Thanks to

Teach For Bulgaria
”2016 marked the third year in Teach For Bulgaria’s valued partnership with the International Women’s Club in Sofia. Over the year, the IWC grant was invested in financial support for Teach For Bulgaria primary and elementary school teachers, the annual student-focused education conference held in June in Plovdiv, and the Summer Academy, a five week intensive training for all first-year Teach For Bulgaria teachers. Over the past three years Teach For Bulgaria has valued the support of the IWC and have sought ways to contribute to the great work of the organization. In 2016, 6 TFB staff members had the opportunity to volunteer at the IWC’s Annual Charity Bazaar in December. It was an awesome way to meet other IWC members, beneficiaries and volunteers, all there to support the club’s great efforts in fundraising. For us, Teach for Bulgaria representatives, the event was a small way to get more involved in the work of the IWC and we are grateful for the opportunity!·

IWC Passport Every year the Bazaar Committee searches for fresh and alternatives ideas on how to promote cultural diversity in a less monotonous fashion at the same time increasing funds. This project aims to reach a new target audience: kids, teenagers and young adults, who are looking not only to taste the flavors of the world, but to enhance knowledge and cultural understanding in an entreating way. Passport is a collectable sticker book suitable for kids of all ages and collectors of country flags. The idea behind the creation of the book is to increase the fundraising of the IWC Stall at the Charity Bazaar while promoting cultural diversity in a fun way.
It was an amazing and successful educational and cultural project where the visitors had the opportunity to travel the world in one day. That was a great chance to all participating countries to share more of their culture and contribute side by side with IWC to education through remarkable facts about their country. These small bits will stay forever in the heart and mind of the participants. The end of the journey was the big tombola hosted by the rapper Ustata with amazing prizes from our sponsors Plesio, Riu Pravets Golf and Spa Resort, CasePro, Playmusic and with the unconditional support of Harley Davidson. Johanna Alcantara IWC Passport Coordinator
Christmas Market and Outside Stage This year there was a new area to explore at the IWC Charity Bazaar: our brand new Open Air Christmas Market! Under our spacious white tent 8 countries were serving hot food and drinks from 12:00 until 19:00. South Africa displayed its typical African barbecue, called braai, among other delicatessen, drinks and souvenirs. Germany offered Glßhwein, as well as delicious barbecued meat. Poland and Belgium served their typical hot drinks, waffles and other sweets. Not to miss was of course the Irish coffee, in order to cope with the cold, which was courtesy of the Irish Stall. Spain, of course, served paella and sangria, while Mexico complemented them with nachos and margaritas. And how about some freshly-made bread from Lebanon? Just delicious. The Open Air Christmas Market, which was realized thanks to the generous support of IKEA, gave our visitors the opportunity to grab something to eat outside, to get some fresh air and to warm up with a comforting glass of hot wine, while listening to the music of professional singers and choirs. We were delighted by the Sentimental Swingers, Christiana Loizou, Orlin Pavlov, the flamenco band Del Padre, as well as the great voices of Bella Voce from the Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra, Sofia Gospel Choir and Sofia Ladies Choir. By the outside tent, Rudolph the Reindeer was greeting the children, while everyone was taking pictures with him, before he started his round-the-world trip with Santa Clause! Next to him there was also a little pony, and the kids greatly enjoyed his presence as well. Notwithstanding the cold, visitors surely seemed to enjoy the outside area as an addition to the Bazaar: it managed to create a joyful Christmas atmosphere that put a smile on everyone’s faces. We are without any doubt looking forward to it again next year! 10

España Why Not? In the previous editions of the bazaar, we were just visitors, some friends enjoying different cutures, foods and products from many different countries and expending some money that we knew it will support nice projects. We met there, we talked and we said, Why Not?... We realized that our country had not a stall, so we committed ourselfs to organize it for next edition of the Bazaar, and here we are. Our wish has become a real project, and this edition we have managed to set our stall.
Spain has been represented in the bazaar, with the main objective of supporting the initiative and raise some funds for charity projects, but as well, with the common idea by all friends involved of showing the solidarity of our country, sharing our nice culture and, Why Not? having fun in a very special day.

For several months, after work, we have been thinking what can we do, which companies to be contacted, which products to be collected, which food may we cook, etc. So many things, ideas, thoughts and details to be organized and coordinated. It is a real job, but our illusion always found a way to overcome the troubles with a Why Not? Let’s do it We are newcomers at the bazaar, and we are so proud of our contribution this year. At the end of the day we were really exhausted, but extremely happy with the result and the feeling during the day and the previous ones. Italia Dear Friends, My husband and I arrived at the Italian Embassy in Sofia last September, and after few weeks I soon got acquainted with the IWC Annual Charity Bazaar. The Ladies of the Italian Team introduced me to the organization of such a great event and I started participating to the organisers’ meeting. I immediately realized what a great job everybody was doing to make the IWC Christmas Bazaar in Sofia such an important event and a wonderful experience. I was particularly happy to give my little contribution to a great cause: help and support many valuable projects for the people in need! As diplomat’s spouse I had the chance to participate in many Charity Bazaars in other countries, but here in Sofia it was amazing! An incredible participation, more than 50 stalls, from the international and local community. Every country had the opportunity to show its national products, traditional cuisine, artcrafts and cultural performances. The number of visitors was huge and we all felt a joyful atmosphere together with a friendly and positive competition among the stallholders. All of us share the true motivation of this event: show solidarity and give hope for humanitarian causes. I would like to thank all the organisers for their professional support and for the attention they gave to the needs and suggestions of the stallholders. The IWC Charity Bazaar 2016 was another successful event thanks to the organisers’ Staff who acted like an ”orchestra conductor· in

planning and timing the complex event. Last but not least my warmest thanks go to the Ladies of the Italian Team for their hard work during the weeks of preparation and the entire day of the Bazaar. Many thanks also to all the volunteers that helped at the stall. A special note of great appreciation goes to all our donors and supporters that donated with incredible generosity and helped make our stall such a big success! This time of Festivities may be bright and joyful for everybody. I wish you all Happy New Year! Antonella Rensi

Japan Dear Friends, We arrived to Bulgaria on my assignment as Ambassador of Japan to Bulgaria last year in July. We heard from the wife of the previous ambassador that charity bazaar of the International Women’s Club is extremely popular charity event and a good opportunity to present Japanese culture and beautiful side of Japan to Bulgarian people.
Last year one of the tasks in front of the Japanese booth was how in reduced number of Japanese residents in Bulgaria to continue developing activities that may contribute to Bulgarian society. For this reason, Japanese booth tried something new in order to increase charity amount by selling products donated by companies with business related to Japan.
Japanese culture is not limited only to traditional culture such as tea ceremony and contemporary pop culture such as manga. We think many Bulgarians experience the beauty of Japanese culture through the splendid Japanese goods such as cars, electrical products, fashion and cosmetics. There was big merit also for the companies that made donations because they were able to PR their social contribution through their participation in such popular charity event as IWC charity bazaar. Of course, we invested efforts in traditional activities performed until now including sale of pottery, other articles of traditional Japanese crafts, sushi and providing free of charge Japanese calligraphy. As a result, the total amount collected at the Japanese boot was increased. This result is thanks to the dedicated efforts of all who participated with devotion in the preparation of the bazaar. Many people also cooperated on the day of bazaar. Donations from the companies have become onethird of the total charity amount. Once again, We would like to express our most sincere gratitude to all people who supported the activities of the Japanese boot and also to the International Women’s Club which gave us chance to take part in such wonderful event. Lebanon The Lebanese stall is participating at the IWC bazaar since the beginning of the bazaar organization. We are proud that every year our stall is performing better and better, getting more space at the bazaar, more results and more success! Our stall is famous in presenting a wide range of the wellknown lebanese food, many kind of sweets, local products and some of the lebanese artisanal items. The success of our stall is the result of the big team work, the nice friendly atmosphere that this team provides on the stall and the big support of the Lebanese Embassy, the Lebanese Association and many lebanese businessmen and restaurants and of course the lebanese ladies.
of the IWC bazaar is the fruit of the work of the IWC bazaar team! It is a big pleasure to see how every year this bazaar is reaching bigger results, bigger participation of the countries and having the opprtunity to help more people in need!
This year we took the challenge to participate in the outdoor stall, making typically fresh hot bread and it was a big success!
Keep forward and see you next year!
As a stallholder since 2002, I highly appreciate the volunteer work of all the stalls, the big energy that this bazaar provides and of course the success

Russian Federation This year we’ve heard a lot of warm words about Russian stall. And we were really glad because our success was a result of a team work. Most of the souvenirs were made by the members of the Embassy staff and Russian compatriots who leave or work in Bulgaria. More than one hundred pupils of the Embassy School, both Russians and Bulgarians took part in the preparations and provided a lot of wonderful handmade souvenirs as well. Under the supervision of the Embassy’s Chef in their spare time our women prepared several traditional Russian dishes and beverages. Our guests had a chance to recognize that Russian Federation is a multinational country tasting native Tatarstan dishes, served by our friends from Tatar community in Bulgaria. Original decoration of our stall is an idea and achievement of the head of the Embassy’s technical group and his colleagues.
We wish to send special thanks to our sponsors who supported us this year. Their activity helped us a lot to organize win tombola with a great quantity of valuable prizes. Certainly our country’s presentation couldn’t be full without the participation of our children’ dance group. Summing up I want to send my thanks to the organizers of the Fair – International Women’ Club of Sofia and to note that my first experience of cooperation with its activists was really useful and pleasant. 23

Without the generous donations from our sponsors and the positive spirit of each volunteer we could not have made our contribution to the charities who need every stotinki... Apart from the cold and the new layout of the tent we all had a wonderful busy time, It was good to connect with people from different nations and to see old visitors who come back each year to say ‘Hi· The South African stall has become well known for the Boerewors Rolls, splendid wines and friendly volunteers. Slovakia Dear friends, Firstly, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the IWC and organizers of the Charity Bazaar in particular. I do acknowledge their charming way of spreading a wonderful message, unselfishly helping people in need, and at the same time providing coordination and valuable support to all stallholders participated in the charity event.
2016 was a challenging year for us. Many of you know, Slovakia held the Presidency of the Council of the European Union for six months during the second half of 2016. Although we organized a lot of interesting events in this regard, we were looking forward to the Bazaar in December. The Slovak team, headed by my spouse Helena, was focused on making our stall as personal as possible, therefore we prepared many typical
handmade Slovak products, cakes, beverages, snacks, for everyone to taste or to take home. The demand for our products was incredible, so at the end of the day we even ended up selling the decorations from our Christmas tree. Actually, it has been third time we took part at the Bazaar during my mandate in Bulgaria, but it turned out to be the most successful one so far – we collected 5460 BGN. This year’s IWC Charity Bazaar was again a great experience and success. We had a lot of fun preparing and decorating our stall, meeting our old friends, making new ones, but especially seeing a lot of people coming through and showing interest in different cultures and traditions. It is always remarkable to see countries from all over the world unite for a good cause. A big thank you goes to all our friends, colleagues and sponsors that contributed to the success of our stall this year. Marián Jakubócy, Ambassador of the Slovak Republic
