Marae Manu Ariki year place
2016 Taumaranui, New-Zealand
Marae Manu Ariki (is a communal or sacred place that serves religious and social purposes in Polynesian societies. In the life of the MÄ ori of New Zealand, the marae is still a vital part of everyday life). The Marae is one off the bigger ones in the country and has a size of 300 acres, including mountains, a church, temple, gym and a sheep farm. The MÄ ori community is currently closed for a major upgrade of the grounds and buildings but will re-open for the public next year. The overall idea behind the masterplan is that it should become a major garden park, it includes: a sensory garden, a major European style kitchen gardens, lakeside with natural swimming pool, a miniature railway system following the Maori ancient immagration through 4 different garden styles, an amphitheater and fruit orchards and an upgrade or redirection of the roads. The project is currently under consideration by the keepers of the trust fund.

A l’Infinitude, La Pepiniere Royale year place
2015 Pigna, Corsica
“La Pépinière Royale”, the Royal Tree Nursery in Pigna, Corsica is an historical estate that served as central production and distribution center for extensive plantations covering the entire island in the 18th and 19th century. Nowadays this estate is an abandoned ruin that is being restored and redeveloped through a European-funded project (Leader). This thesis explores the options on how this redevelopment can be implemented and how this historical site can provide possibilities for contemporary needs and challenges. Focus points of this research are the revitalization of the park, the landscape construction, indigenous and historic on site flora, relationship with the town of Pigna and multifunctional use of the different facilities and the connection with its surroundings. Furthermore it looks into the implementation of the surroundings on a smaller scale that leads to the creation of the label PAESU di QUI (Villages d’ici, Towns from here). Focus points here are the conservation of architecture, the background of the town and the cooperation with the association. Global concept for the park, INFINITY

Würzburg Ringpark year 2014 place Würzburg, Germany Collaboration Nishtha Bali, Saranya Gunasekaran, Martina Welther For the design of the Ring Park the “5C concept” is created to the initial “Level Concept”. The “5 Cs” stand for: Create (openness), Connect (movement patterns), Concentrate (activities), Capture (more green), Conserve (Lindahl’s initial movement pattern, historical trees). By linking the 5C concept to the “Level Concept”, different features like elevated entrance mounds, fountains, hanging lights etc. have been implemented. Connecting the movement lines to Lindahl‘s original scheme we developed a design consisting of one main path that offers the possibility of fast connection while at the same time giving the opportunity to experience the park. The secondary pathways open the neighborhood to the park. The activities are concentrated to certain zones which are enhanced by the natural entrances along the main path. Close to the station square, there is also a play of levels with mounds that flank the square on either side. Another part of the design is the two phase traffic solution which opens the square for pedestrians and also reduces traffic from four lanes to two in the first phase and a tunnel in front of the Hauptbahnhof in the second phase in case the first phase does not entirely solve the problem. The tramway system is improved by replacing the loop at the station square to Berliner Platz.

The New Park year 2015 place Reghin, Romania Collaboration Luisa Colorado, Julia Samico, Nathan de Almeida Reghin a town in the heart of Transylvania is the home of difference cultures; Romanian, Hungarian and Roma people. This diversity brings political problems and the first idea to re-design the park was cancelled half-way. The design respects the natural flow of the park, with a balanced mix between ecological and activity areas. Through a system of pathways the user can enjoy the different activity zones and the land marks. A park which was empty and abandoned in the past transformed into a blooming place, will be a welcoming gift for the renewal of the town!

Munich Metropoliton Area year 2014 place Munich, Germany Collaboration Angelo Angileri, Ladan Badiei, Maria Fernanda Gonzalez D. Munich Metropoliton area is one of the biggest metropoliton regions in Europe and the fastest growing in Germany. A good development in order to provide all the possible services to the people is needed. Based on the needs of the people and the aspects the area already has to offer two scenarios where developed; The first one called „The Fingers“, where we are following several vertical axes parallel to the river, projected from Munich; these axes create connection areas between the different land-uses. The main activities contemplated here are nature, agriculture, science, culture, recreation and industry. The second scenario is called „The Belts“, where we propose horizontal green connections to improve the biodiversity. It’s a scenario dedicated to science, nature and agriculture. Each scenario has its own SWOT analysis to identify the best aspects. From each scenario we chose the most prominent factors: from the first we selected the sprawl areas and the fingers, from the second the green connections.

LELLA HADHRIA year 2014 place Djerba, Tunisia Collaboration Lamis Khalil, Zied Nhouchi, Elaf Raslan The Island of Djerba is a specific example of a human community adapting to its environment and has been recognised by the UNESCO as „Patrimony of Humanity“ just recently. Since the 1960’s the island has been witnessing intensive transformation due to the mass tourism development. The rapid urbanization of the littoral strip with hotel complexes, golf courses and marinas threatens the vernacular assets with a risk of loss of the island’s identity. Meanwhile, the island of Djerba is in need of development, but a development in a reasoned way taking into account its specificities. The project site of Lella Hadhria, a pristine lagoon ecosystem and home to a rich fauna and flora, is threatened by development plans for a hotel complex. The attendance of different representatives and stakeholders will give us a broad understanding of existing interests as well as ongoing efforts. With an interdisciplinary approach, bringing together architecture, urban planning, landscape architecture and ecology professionals and students, the summer school wants to contribute to a spirit of cooperation.
