NOT FERRY GOOD NEWS FROM OFT

ISLAND MP Andrew Turner has welcomed reassurances that cross-Solent ferry prices and services will be closely monitored in future. It provides some consolation for Mr. Turner after he was

informed that the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) will take no further action at this time to investigate the Islandmainland ferry market. However, while making their decision, the OFT have revealed that more information will be

available to the public in future about the levels of pricing and services. Mr. Turner is also pleased that the ferry companies will be undertaking customer satisfaction surveys. The OFT announced that following their market study

COUNCILLOR ARRESTED

POLICE have arrested an IW councillor in connection with a series of sex offences. Cllr David Whittaker, a member of the Conservative ruling group, has stood down from his position following the arrest. Cllr Whittaker, who has served as an IW councillor since 2005, and is currently a member of Newport West, was arrested and quizzed at Newport police station for six

hours, before being released on bail until December 2, pending further enquiries. Police spokeswoman, Katie Wilson, said: “Police can confirm a 68-year-old man from the Newport area, was arrested on Friday, October, 9, by detectives investigating alleged offences under legislation in the Sexual Offences Act 2003.” Speaking exclusively to The Gazette at his Carisbrooke

home, Cllr Whittaker, who is on the fire scrutiny panel, responded to his arrest. “I have spoken with IW council leader David Pugh in respect of my position and feel that it is best that I stand down from the group whilst the police progress their investigation. However, I am still an active local councillor. “I am fully supportive of the police enquiry and I have answered all the questions put

to me by them. I welcome their due diligence into the investigation and believe that my character with be untainted at the end of it.” Cllr Whittaker added: “I would like to thank all the people for their supportive messages during this trying time for both my wife and family.”
