Health Min. seeks vitamin D report By Ian Wishart TGIF newsroom

INSIDE NZPA/Ross Setford

AUCKLAND - Health Minister Tony Ryall has asked officials at the newly-established Cancer Control Council to brief him on a flood of medical studies suggesting New Zealand’s ‘slip, slop, slap’sunsmart campaigns may be costing thousands of lives. For two decades, prompted by strong lobbying from skin specialists and officials within the Ministry of Health, New Zealand has heavily pushed an official ‘stay out of the sun’ line in order to reduce the number of lethal melanoma cases each year. But for the past three years the Ministry and its supporters in the Cancer Society have been under seige as thousands of new scientific and medical studies cast massive doubt on the wisdom of continuing the slip, slop, slap campaigns. Two new scientific studies published this week have conclusively shown that the ‘cover up’message every summertime may actually be killing hundreds more New Zealanders every year than it saves. The reason is vitamin D, the so-called sunshine vitamin. The studies are showing people with low vitamin D levels - because they’ve obeyed the ‘sunsmart’ message - are much more likely to die of cancer than people who sunbathe. In the most bitter twist for the Ministry of Health, one of the studies published this week shows that sunbathers who get melanoma are 30% more likely to survive than people who stayed out of the sun.. “A research team from the University of Leeds working with the US National Institutes of Health found a high level of vitamin D - suggestive of high sun exposure - protected patients with malignant melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, reported Britain’s Independent this week. “Those with the lowest levels of vitamin D in their blood at diagnosis were 30 per cent more likely to suffer a recurrence of the disease after treatment

than those who had the highest levels. “Patients with the highest levels of the vitamin also had the thinnest tumours at diagnosis. Results of the study, funded by Cancer Research UK and the National Institutes of Health, are published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.” Another study found people who obey the sunsmart rules have double the risk of dying from bowel cancer.

TGIF Edition was told at the start of this year that the Ministry of Health is aware of the growing evidence that people need around 10 minutes a day of direct sun on their face and hands without sunscreen or hats. However, a Ministry spokeswoman said the scientific data was still being considered at the time. Thousands of New Zealanders die of cancer each year, whereas only 250 die of melanoma.

John Key, stand-up comic By Peter Wilson and Maggie Tait of NZPA

WELLINGTON, SEPT 25 NZPA - Prime Minister John Key had just over four minutes to persuade millions of Americans to visit New Zealand, and he had a fair go at it. Appearing today on the Late Show with David Letterman, Mr Key had to read out 10 reasons for visiting New Zealand, prepared by the show’s writers.

Apart from a risky promise to personally pick up tourists at the airport, they gave him an easy ride. Letterman set the scene after Mr Key walked into the studio with a cheery wave. “How many years ago did you get on the plane to come here?”Letterman asked. Mr Key admitted“I’ve aged a lot”and then had to confirm that mail actually did reach New Zealand. By pigeon, he said.

As the show ran through the top 10 Mr Key was relaxed and chatty with a host who sometimes gives his guests a hard time, although Mr Key admitted later he had been “a little bit nervous” before he went in. Letterman questioned his producer at one point: “Why is he here, Dave?” and was told the prime minister’s mission was to read out the Top 10. “It’s prime time viewing for promoting New Zea-
