ILLINOIS WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY Russell and Betty Shirk Foundation of Bloomington. The Shirk family owns Beer Nuts, Inc.®, the Bloomington-based snack food company. The two-level, 135,344-square foot complex seats 2,680 in its performance arena, and contains four multi-use courts for tennis, volleyball, basketball, as well as racquetball courts, a 200-meter track, a training room and wellness center, classrooms, and other facilities. In 1999 the Jack Horenberger Baseball Field was opened, which paved the way in 2000 for new softball and soccer fields. The science center has 15 technologically-equipped classrooms, lecture halls, and seminar rooms; 18 teaching labs; 27 research labs; and facilities for computers. The Center for Liberal Arts houses 60 faculty offices, classrooms, and facilities for social science, humanities, business and economics. Distinguished Speakers. In the past few years, IWU has hosted a number of outstanding speakers, including former U.S. Defense Secretary William Cohen, authors Maya Angelou and Kurt Vonnegut, and film directors Kevin Smith and Spike Lee. Accomplished Alums. Illinois Wesleyan alumni of distinction include Edward B. Rust, Jr., ’72, president and chief executive officer of Bl oomington - based State Farm Insurance; Ja ck Sikma ‘77, seve n - ti me NBA All-Star and cu rrent ass istant coa ch for the Houston Rockets; Dawn Upshaw ’82, a two - ti me Grammy-award winning singer with the New York Metropolitan Opera; Frankie Faison ’71, who has appeared in the fil ms “Sil e nce of the Lambs”, “T he Thomas Crown Aff air” and “Com i ng to Ameri ca”; Akito Mizuno ’74, senior managing director of Mizuno, the world’s largest sporting goods company; Steve Vogel ’68, author of the best-selling true crime book “Reasonable Doubt”; and Richard Jenkins ’69, who was nominated for an Academy Award for his starring role in the 2008 movie “The Visitor.” llinois Wesleyan University, founded in 1850, enrolls about 2,100 undergraduates in the College of Liberal Arts, with 17 academic departments, and in the Schools of Art, Music, Nursing and Theatre Arts. IWU remains among the nation's best values in private higher education, ranked No. 32 among Kiplinger's Personal Finance 100 Best Values in Private Colleges for 2010-11. Schools on the Kiplinger list were ranked by academic quality and the net price students pay to attend, with quality accounting for two-thirds of the total. Emphasizing a distinctive liberal arts curriculum as the central feature of every student’s education, IWU also provides opportunities for professional and pre-professional preparation. The student-faculty ratio of 12-to-1 means that the University’s students are active participants in their education, often working individually with faculty members on research. As a residential university, Illinois Wesleyan provides a vibrant campus environment in which rich co-curricular offerings complement the primary academic mission. About 30 percent of each graduating class goes on to graduate school, with recent alumni accepted into law schools, medical schools, and in other advanced degree programs. New Facilities. The $25 million Ames Library (at right), a place where books, journals and other materials of intellect and culture are complemented by exciting computer and information technology, opened in 2002 and the recent $6 million renovation of the Memorial Gym has resulted in the Hansen Student Center, a facility designed to meet the social, recreational, and educational needs of IWU students. IWU’s attractive and well-maintained 73-acre campus saw approximately $51 million in new construction in the 1990s, including the Shirk Center for Athletics and Recreation (1994), the Center for Natural Science Learning and Research (1995), the Center for Liberal Arts (1997) as well as a residence hall, accommodating 118 students in suite-like apartments (1997). The Shirk Center was funded in part by a $5 million gift from the

He is a 1984 graduate of the University of Maine with a degree in physical education and earned a master's degree in athletic administration from Illinois State in 1985. He was also the head basketball coach at Bangor (Maine) Community College for four seasons. He and his wife, Michelle, are the parents of three daughters - Sara (born October 1995), Jenna (April 1998), and Anna (May 2001).

Jack Horenberger Baseball Field, opened in 1999, is named for the longtime IWU coach and athletic director, who died at age 87 in 2000. A 1936 IWU grad, he was the school's baseball coach (from 194281), basketball coach (1945-65) and athletic director (1947-81). Horenberger was a star baseball shortstop and a standout basketball guard at IWU, serving as captain of the 1935-36 basketball team, the only undefeated (20-0) basketball team in school history. In his 37 years as baseball coach his teams had an overall mark of 509-401-5 (.559) and were 319-98-1 (.764) in CCIW play. His CCIW record was never below .500 and his teams won 16 titles. His 21year basketball coaching record was 264-212. Among his former players who have succeeded in professional baseball are Bobby Winkles (former Oakland and California manager); Doug Rader (former player and manager); catcher Cal Neeman, shortstop Lyle Luttrell, and pitcher Jack Pregenzer.

Illinois Wesleyan Baseball Staff Matt Willey has been an assistant baseball coach on Dennis Martel's staff since 1997. A fullt-time teacher of physical education at Bloomington Junior High School, Willey has a bachelor's degree from North Dakota State University. He and his wife, Mary, are the parents of four children - Rebekah, Paul, Daniel and Adam. Tim Siegworth is a former pitcher for the Illinois Wesleyan teams of the mid 1970s. The lefthander had a 16-3 overall record from 1974-77 and a career earned run average of 2.85 in 142 innings and still ranks No. 5 among Titan career records. A full-time employee of the Normal Parks and Recreation Department, Tim is married to Mary HorganSiegworth. Also assisting with the Titan baseball program is the 1991 team’s “Most Valuable Player” Mike Brown. A catcher who played in the minor league system of the Los Angeles Dodgers, Brown batted .326 with 11 doubles, eight homers and 29 RBI in 1991 and had a .597 slugging percentage. In 1990 he clubbed 11 doubles and had 30 RBI.

ATHLETIC DIRECTOR Dennie Bridges’ association with Illinois Wesleyan began when he enrolled as a student in 1957. Bridges retired in March 2001 after 36 seasons as basketball coach with a career record of 667319, second most all-time among NCAA Division III coaches. His 1997 team was 29-2 and won the Division III championship, while his 1996 (28-3) and 2001 (24-7) teams each placed third nationally. His teams won 17 conference championships and qualified for the Division III playoffs 14 times in 18 seasons. Since Bridges became athletic director (1981), the Shirk Center, Fort Natatorium and Jack Horenberger Baseball Field have been built, as well as new facilities for soccer and softball. Bridges, who graduated in 1961 and began his IWU coaching career in 1964, earned letters in basketball, baseball and football and was all-conference in basketball and football as an IWU player. Bridges and his wife, Rita, have three grown children, all IWU graduates and former Titan athletes. Eldest son Steve was a four-year football letterman and was an Academic All-American. Three former Illinois Wesleyan baseball players were inducted into various Halls of Fame in 2006-07. Denny Matthews, a 1966 grad who will begin his 40th season behind the microphone in the Kansas City Royals radio booth this year, was the 2007 winner of the Ford C. Frick Award for broadcasting excellence and was honored at the National Baseball Hall of Fame induction ceremonies on July 29, 2007 in Cooperstown, N.Y., when Tony Gwynn and Cal Ripken Jr. were inducted.
