ILLINOIS WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY

llinois Wesleyan University, founded in 1850, enrolls about 2,100 undergraduates in the College of Liberal Arts, with 17 academic departments, and in the Schools of Art, Music, Nursing and Theatre Arts. The 2004 edition of The Fiske Guide to Colleges lists the University as one of its 22 “best buys” among the nation’s private colleges, describing Illinois Wesleyan as “at once cozy and diverse, loaded with opportunities for ambitious students.” Emphasizing a distinctive liberal arts curriculum as the central feature of every student’s education, IWU also provides opportunities for professional and pre-professional preparation. The student-faculty ratio of 12-to-1 means that the University’s students are active participants in their education, often working individually with faculty members on research. As a residential university, Illinois Wesleyan provides a vibrant campus environment in which rich co-curricular offerings complement the primary academic mission. About 30 percent of each graduating class goes on to graduate school, with recent alumni accepted into law schools, medical schools, and in other advanced degree programs. New Facilities: The $25 million Ames Library (at right), a place where books, journals and other materials of intellect and culture are complemented by exciting computer and information technology, opened in 2002 and the recent $6 million renovation of the Memorial Gym has resulted in the Hansen Student Center, a facility designed to meet the social, recreational, and educational needs of IWU students. IWU’s attractive and well-maintained 73acre campus saw approximately $51 million in new construction in the 1990s, including the Shirk Center for Athletics and Recreation (1994), the Center for Natural Science Learning and Research (1995), the Center for Liberal Arts (1997) as well as a residence hall, accommodating 118 students in suite-like apartments (1997). The Shirk Center was funded in part by a $5 million gift from the Russell and Betty Shirk Foundation of Bloomington. The Shirk family owns Beer Nuts, Inc.®, the Bloomington-based snack food company. The two-level, 135,344-square foot complex seats 2,680 in its performance arena, and contains four multi-use courts for tennis, volleyball, basketball, as well as racquetball courts, a 200-meter track, a training room and wellness center, classrooms, and other facilities. In 1999 the Jack Horenberger Baseball Field was opened, which paved the way in 2000 for new softball and soccer fields. The science center has 15 technologically-equipped classrooms, lecture

RICHARD F. WILSON, PRESIDENT Richard F. Wilson became the 18th president at Illinois Wesleyan in July 2004. Since 1978 Wilson has served in a number of roles at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, most recently (since 1996) as Vice President of the U. of Illinois Foundation. He was responsible for all private leading campus efforts to achieve its $1 billion goal as part of its comprehensive campaign. From 1986 to 1994, Wilson was Associate Chancel-

halls, and seminar rooms; 18 teaching labs; 27 research labs; and facilities for computers. The Center for Liberal Arts houses 60 faculty offices, classrooms, and facilities for social science, humanities, business and economics. Distinguished Speakers: In the past few years, IWU has hosted a number of outstanding speakers, including former U.S. Defense Secretary William Cohen, authors Maya Angelou and Kurt Vonnegut, and film directors Kevin Smith and Spike Lee. Accomplished Alums. Illinois Wesleyan alumni of distinction include Edward B. Rust, Jr., ’72, president and chief executive officer of Bloomington-based State Farm Insurance; Jack Sikma ‘77, seventime NBA All-Star and current assistant coach for the Houston Rockets; Dawn Upshaw ’82, a two-time Grammy-award winning singer with the New York Metropolitan Opera; Frankie Faison ’71, who has appeared in the films “Silence of the Lambs”, “The Thomas Crown Affair” and “Coming to Ameri a”; Akito Mizuno ’74, senior managing director of Mizuno, the world’s largest sporting goods company; Steve Vogel ’68, author of the best-selling true crime book “Reasonable Doubt”; and Richard Jenkins ’69, who was nominated for an Academy Award for his starring role in the 2008 movie “The Visitor.” lor, leading effortrs to incorporate computing technologies into instruction and providing oversight of intercollegiate athletics. In 1994, he became Associate Chancellor for Development and Deputy Director of the University of Illinois Foundation. Since 1981, Wilson held and adjunct teaching position in the College of Education, most recently as Adjunct Professor of Higher Education. He then pursued advanced degrees from the University of Michigan, earning both master’s and doctoral degrees in higher education. Wilson and his wife, Pat, have two children, Adam and Rachel.

JACK HORENBERGER FIELD Jack Horenberger Baseball Field, opened in 1999, is named for the longtime IWU coach and athletic director, who died at age 87 in 2000. A 1936 IWU grad, he was the school’s baseball coach (from 1942-81), basketball coach (1945-65) and athletic director (194781). Horenberger was a star baseball shortstop and a standout basketball guard at IWU, serving as captain of the 1935-36 basketball team, the only undefeated (20-0) basketball team in school history. In his 37 years as baseball coach his teams had an overall mark of 509-401-5 (.559) and were 319-98-1 (.764) in CCIW play. His CCIW record was never below .500 and his teams won 16 titles. His 21-year basketball coaching record was 264-212. Among his former players who have succeeded in professional baseball are Bobby Winkles (former Oakland and California manager); Doug Rader (former player and manager); catcher Cal Neeman, shortstop Lyle Luttrell, and pitcher Jack Pregenzer.

ATHLETIC DIRECTOR DENNIE BRIDGES Dennie Bridges has been athletic director at Illinois Wesleyan University since 1981 and was head basketball coach at the school for 36 seasons, retiring after the 2001 season. He retired as the winningest active coach in NCAA Division III men’s basketball with a record of 667-319. Bridges’ 2000-01 team finished 24-7 and placed third in the national Division III tournament. His 1997 team won the Division III title, earning him Division III “Coach of the Year” honors, and his 1996 squad also played to a third-place national finish. He is one of only 22 college coaches (regardless of division) with more than 650 victories and is the second winningest coach, by victories, in Division III history, behind Dick Sauers, who amassed 702 wins at Albany (N.Y.) in 41 seasons from 1956 to 1997. Bridges, who coached in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin longer and won more league championships than any other coach in CCIW history, had a league mark of 421-129 with 17 titles, a total twice as many as any other CCIW team in that period. Bridges’ success in national competition was also been a benchmark of his coaching career. He coached teams into the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics national tourney seven times and compiled a record of 23-11 in NAIA postseason competition, with two teams reaching the quarterfinals. One of Bridges’ greatest recruiting classes came in 1973, when his freshman class included Jack Sikma of St. Anne (Ill.) High School. Sikma is IWU’s all-time leading scorer and rebounder and played 14 seasons in the National Basketball Association for the Seattle SuperSonics and Milwaukee Bucks. Bridges’ teams reached the Division III tournament 14 times in 18 years (1983-2001) of association with the NCAA and posted a 30-14 record with the three top three finishes and five trips to the quarterfinals. On the heels of the 1995-96 third place Division III tournament finish, the 1996-97 team won the national title and finished with a 29-2 record, the best at IWU since the 1935-36 team was 20-0. High academic standards were also a hallmark during Bridges’ coaching tenure. Illinois Wesleyan has had 13 first team Academic All-Americans in men’s basketball since the program’s inception in 1970, second only to UCLA with 17. In 1999 and 2000, IWU’s Korey Coon was named the “Academic AllAmerican of the Year” and won the 2000 Jostens Trophy, recog-

nizing the outstanding student-athlete in Division III basketball. Illinois Wesleyan also has had six others in basketball who earned second- or third-team Academic All-America honors. Bridges has spent his entire career as an Illinois Wesleyan athlete, coach, and administrator. A native of Anchor, a rural town 25 miles east of Bloomington, Bridges was a four-year letterman and starter in basketball and baseball and a three-year football letterman (all-conference quarterback). In basketball, he was a two-year captain, most valuable player and all-conference once. He is currently 40th in school scoring history with 926 career points. After graduating in 1961, Bridges coached at Plainfield (Ill.) High School three years before returning to IWU in 1964 as Horenberger’s basketball assistant and head tennis coach with the understanding that he would become head basketball coach for the 1965-66 season. Then, with four starters back from a championship team, the rookie coach led the Titans to a sixth CCIW championship in seven years. Under Bridges’ tenure as athletic director, the Shirk Center and Fort Natatorium have been constructed, varsity swimming returned for men and was added for women, and men’s and women’s soccer, women’s cross country, and women’s golf have been added as varsity sports. He was extremely active in fundraising for the Jack Horenberger Baseball Field, opened in April 1999, which yielded new facilities in softball, the Neis Soccer Field, along with renovations of the football field and outdoor track. Bridges, who has conducted basketball clinics in Brazil, New Zealand, and Australia, is a member of the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame, received the IBCA’s Buzzy O’Connor award for meritorious service and has been the state’s Division III Coach of the Year several times. Bridges and his wife, Rita, have three grown children, all former IWU student-athletes. Angela Romani, a four-year regular in tennis, and her husband, Tim, live in Denver, Colo., with their two children — Alyssa and Carly. Steve, a four-year baseball and football letterman, was a second-team Academic All-American in football once and a third-team selection in baseball twice. With a law degree from the University of Illinois, he is a legal consultant for Aon Corporation in Chicago. Eric, a four-year basketball regular and No. 12 in IWU career scoring, has an MBA degree from the University of Iowa, and is employed in Bloomington by State Farm Insurance. Eric and his wife, April, are the parents of one son, Keegan and a daughter, Summer. Many of Bridges’ memories are included in his book, “A Dunk Only Counts Two Points,” published in 2002, as well as his 2006 book, “Kids Don’t Bat Rocks Anymore.” Both books are available by contacting the IWU Bookstore at (309) 556-3059.

HEAD COACH DENNIS MARTEL In 2013, Dennis Martel will begin his 26th season as baseball coach at Illinois Wesleyan. He has the most coaching wins at the school and led the team to the 2010 NCAA Division III national championship, for which he was named the American Baseball Coaches Association/Diamond Sports Division III “National Coach of the Year” as well as the regional “Coach of the Year” for the second time. Martel’s teams have compiled an overall record of 654-403-3 (.618) with seven College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin championships. In CCIW play only, Martel’s teams have a record of 314-140 (.692). In 2008, Martel eclipsed the win total of Jack Horenberger to become the school’s all-time baseball coaching leader in victories. Horenberger had a record of 509-401-5 in 37 seasons at the Titan reins. The 2012 season saw the Titans win more than 24 games for the 13th straight season as the squad finished with a 31-17 record, were 12-9 in CCIW play and appeared in the NCAA Division III tournament for the third straight year and 10th time overall. In 2011, the Titans were 28-18, won the regular season phase of the CCIW and appeared in the NCAA Division III tournament. The 2010 national championship team finished the season with 11 wins in their final 12 games to capture the national title, finishing with a 31-21 record. The Titans were the No. 4 seed in the CCIW tournament and staved off elimination twice on the final day to win the tourney and earn a berth into the NCAA regional. IWU was the No. 6 seed in the sixteam regional and swept the four games to advance to the national championship round for the second time ever and first time since 2001. IWU was 24-16 in 2009 with a 14-7 mark in the CCIW. In 2008, the Titans were 33-11, won the CCIW championship with an 18-3 mark and played in the NCAA Division III regional. In 2007, Martel was co-winner of the league’s

“Coach of the Year” honor as the Titans were 32-13, won the CCIW title with a record-setting 20-1 mark, and hosted the NCAA Division III regional. In 2006, the Titans were 28-14 and 14-7 in the CCIW. Martel’s 2005 team was 34-13 overall, won the CCIW title and advanced to the NCAA Division III regional. In 2004, the Titans were 28-19, won the league title and played in the NCAA Division III regional. Martel’s 2001 team advanced to the Division III College World Series and earned a seventh place finish. The Central Regional champions, the 2001 Titans set a school record with 37 wins and Martel was named the region’s “Coach of the Year” by the American Baseball Coaches Association. Five straight teams (1994-98) won 24 or more games and the 1998 team won 31. Martel has coached two first team American Baseball Coaches Association All-Americans (2B Ricky Angel, 2007; OF James Rinne, 1997), six second team honorees (RHP Jason Pankau, 2011; LHP Matt Aronson, 2007; OF Nick Chilczenkowski, 2006; LHP Cory Lapinski, 2005; RHP Steve Schilsky, 2001; and C Jay Ahrendt, 1996); and three third team selections (1B Kevin Callahan, 2011; RHP Jason Pankau, 2010; and 2B Ryan Gilfillan, 2001). Six of Martel’s players have signed pro baseball contracts - lefthanded pitcher Cory Lapinski (2005, Houston Astros), righthanded pitcher Drew Himes (2005, Houston Astros), righthanded pitcher Steve Schilsky (2002, Oakland A’s), outfielder James Rinne (1998, Arizona Diamondbacks), catcher Jay Ahrendt (1996, Baltimore Orioles) and catcher Mike Brown (1991, Los Angeles Dodgers). An assistant professor of physical education, Martel also spent 21 seasons as IWU’s full-time assistant basketball coach before becoming director of basketball operations in 2007. He is a 1984 graduate of the University of Maine with a degree in physical education and earned a master’s degree in athletic administration from Illinois State in 1985. He was also the head basketball coach at Bangor (Maine) Community College for four seasons. He and his wife, Michelle, are the parents of three daughters - Sara (born October 1995), Jenna (April 1998), and Anna (May 2001).

ASSISTANT COACHES Tim Siegworth Long-time assistant pitching coach Tim Siegworth is a former pitcher for the Illinois Wesleyan teams of the mid1970s. The lefthander had a 16-3 overall record from 1974-77 and a career earned run average of 2.85 in 142 innings and still ranks No. 5 among Titan career records. A full-time employee of the Normal Parks and Recreation Department, Tim is married to Mary Horgan-Siegworth.

Matt Willey Matt Willey has been an assistant baseball coach on Dennis Martel’s staff since 1997. A full-time teacher of physical education at Bloomington Junior High School, Willey has a bachelor’s degree from North Dakota State University. He and his wife, Mary, are the parents of four children - Rebekah, Paul, Daniel and Adam.

Mike Brown In 2013, Mike Brown is in his 17th year as a part-time assistant with the Titan baseball program. Brown was a catcher during his Illinois Wesleyan playing career and was the 1991 “Jack Horenberger Most Outstanding Player” in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin as he batted .326 with 11 doubles, eight homers and 29 RBI in 1991 and had a .597 slugging percentage. Five of those home runs were hit in CCIW play. He was also the Titans’ “Most Valuable Player” in 1991. As a sophomore in 1990, Brown clubbed 11 doubles and had 30 RBI. After his IWU playing days he played in the minor league system of the Los Angeles Dodgers, participating with the major league team in a spring training game. He played in the Dodgers’ system for teams in Great Falls (Mont.), Yakima (Wash.) and Vero Beach (Fla.). Go here for a career overview of his professional career. He is the owner of Brown Capital Investments in Peoria, Ill.
