In 1999 the Jack Horenberger Baseball Field was opened, which paved the way in 2000 for new softball and soccer fields. The science center has 15 technologically-equipped classrooms, lecture halls, and seminar rooms; 18 teaching labs; 27 research labs; and facilities for computers. The Center for Liberal Arts houses 60 faculty offices, classrooms, and facilities for social science, humanities, business and economics. Distinguished Speakers. In the past few years, IWU has hosted a number of outstanding speakers, including former U.S. Defense Secretary William Cohen, authors Maya Angelou and Kurt Vonnegut, and film directors Kevin Smith and Spike Lee. Accomplished Alums. Illinois Wesleyan alumni of distinction include Edward B. Rust, Jr., ’72, president and chief executive officer of Bl oomington - based State Farm Insurance; Ja ck Sikma ‘77, seve n - ti me NBA All-Star and cu rrent ass istant coa ch for the Houston Rockets; Dawn Upshaw ’82, a two - ti me Grammy-award winning singer with the New York Metropolitan Opera; Frankie Faison ’71, who has appeared in the fil ms “Sil e nce of the Lambs”, “T he Thomas Crown Aff air” and “Com i ng to Ameri ca”; Akito Mizuno ’74, senior managing director of Mizuno, the world’s largest sporting goods company; Steve Vogel ’68, author of the best-selling true crime book “Reasonable Doubt”; and Richard Jenkins ’69, who was nominated for an Academy Award for his starring role in the 2008 movie “The Visitor.” llinois Wesleyan University, founded in 1850, enrolls about 2,100 undergraduates in the College of Liberal Arts, with 17 academic departments, and in the Schools of Art, Music, Nursing and Theatre Arts. IWU remains among the nation's best values in private higher education, ranked No. 32 among Kiplinger's Personal Finance 100 Best Values in Private Colleges for 2010-11. Schools on the Kiplinger list were ranked by academic quality and the net price students pay to attend, with quality accounting for two-thirds of the total. Emphasizing a distinctive liberal arts curriculum as the central feature of every student’s education, IWU also provides opportunities for professional and pre-professional preparation. The student-faculty ratio of 12-to-1 means that the University’s students are active participants in their education, often working individually with faculty members on research. As a residential university, Illinois Wesleyan provides a vibrant campus environment in which rich co-curricular offerings complement the primary academic mission. About 30 percent of each graduating class goes on to graduate school, with recent alumni accepted into law schools, medical schools, and in other advanced degree programs. New Facilities. The $25 million Ames Library (at right), a place where books, journals and other materials of intellect and culture are complemented by exciting computer and information technology, opened in 2002 and the recent $6 million renovation of the Memorial Gym has resulted in the Hansen Student Center, a facility designed to meet the social, recreational, and educational needs of IWU students. IWU’s attractive and well-maintained 73-acre campus saw approximately $51 million in new construction in the 1990s, including the Shirk Center for Athletics and Recreation (1994), the Center for Natural Science Learning and Research (1995), the Center for Liberal Arts (1997) as well as a residence hall, accommodating 118 students in suite-like apartments (1997). The Shirk Center was funded in part by a $5 million gift from the

Head Coach Dennis Martel In 2011, Dennis Martel will begin his 24th season as baseball coach at Illinois Wesleyan and will enter 2011 as the coach of the defending national Division III champions. Martel was named the American Baseball Coaches Association/Diamond Sports Division III “National Coach of the Year” as his team finished the season with 11 wins in their final 12 games to capture the national title. Martel was also named the regional “Coach of the Year” for the second time (the first being in 2001). His teams have compiled an overall record of 595-368-3 (.617) with six College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin championships. In CCIW play only, Martel's teams have a record of 287-125 (.697). In 2008, Martel eclipsed the win total of Jack Horenberger to become the school's all-time baseball coaching leader in victories. Horenberger had a record of 509-401-5 in 37 seasons at the Titan reins. The 2010 national championship team finished with a record of 31-21 and was the 11th straight Wesleyan team to win 24 or more games. The Titans were the No. 4 seed in the CCIW tournament and staved off elimination twice on the final day to win the tourney and earn a berth into the NCAA regional. IWU was the No. 6 seed in the sixteam regional and swept the four games to advance to the national championship round for the second time ever and first time since 2001.

In 2008, the Titans were 33-11, won the CCIW championship with an 18-3 mark and played in the NCAA Division III regional. Martel has coached two first team American Baseball Coaches Association All-Americans (2B Ricky Angel, 2007; OF James Rinne, 1997), five second team honorees (LHP Matt Aronson, 2007; OF Nick Chilczenkowski, 2006; LHP Cory Lapinski, 2005; RHP Steve Schilsky, 2001; and C Jay Ahrendt, 1996); and two third team selections (P Jason Pankau, 2010; and 2B Ryan Gilfillan, 2001). Six of Martel's players have signed pro baseball contracts lefthanded pitcher Cory Lapinski (2005, Houston Astros), righthanded pitcher Drew Himes (2005, Houston Astros), righthanded pitcher Steve Schilsky (2002, Oakland A's), outfielder James Rinne (1998, Arizona Diamondbacks), catcher Jay Ahrendt (1996, Baltimore Orioles) and catcher Mike Brown (1991, Los Angeles Dodgers). An assistant professor of physical education, Martel also spent 21 seasons as IWU's full-time assistant basketball coach before becoming director of basketball operations in 2007. He is a 1984 graduate of the University of Maine with a degree in physical education and earned a master's degree in athletic administration from Illinois State in 1985. He was also the head basketball coach at Bangor (Maine) Community College for four seasons. He and his wife, Michelle, are the parents of three daughters - Sara (born October 1995), Jenna (April 1998), and Anna (May 2001).

IWU was 24-16 in 2009 with a 14-7 mark in the CCIW.

A 1936 IWU grad, he was the school's baseball coach (from 194281), basketball coach (1945-65) and athletic director (1947-81). Horenberger was a star baseball shortstop and a standout basketball guard at IWU, serving as captain of the 1935-36 basketball team, the only undefeated (20-0) basketball team in school history. In his 37 years as baseball coach his teams had an overall mark of 509-401-5 (.559) and were 319-98-1 (.764) in CCIW play. His CCIW record was never below .500 and his teams won 16 titles. The lefthander had a 16-3 overall record from 1974-77 and a career earned run average of 2.85 in 142 innings and still ranks No. 5 among Titan career records. A full-time employee of the Normal Parks and Recreation Department, Tim is married to Mary Horgan-Siegworth. Also assisting with the Titan baseball program is the 1991 team’s “Most Valuable Player” Mike Brown. A catcher who played in the minor league system of the Los Angeles Dodgers, Brown batted .326 with 11 doubles, eight homers and 29 RBI in 1991 and had a .597 slugging percentage. In 1990 he clubbed 11 doubles and had 30 RBI.
