I
llinois Wesleyan University, founded in 1850, enrolls about 2,100 undergraduates in the College of Liberal Arts, with 17 academic departments, and in the Schools of Art, Music, Nursing and Theatre Arts. The 2004 edition of The Fiske Guide to Colleges lists the University as one of its 22 “best buys” among the nation’s private colleges, describing Illinois Wesleyan as “at once cozy and diverse, loaded with opportunities for ambitious students.” Emphasizing a distinctive liberal arts curriculum as the central feature of every student’s education, IWU also provides opportunities for professional and pre-professional preparation. The student-faculty ratio of 12-to-1 means that the University’s students are active participants in their education, often working individually with faculty members on research. As a residential university, Illinois Wesleyan provides a vibrant campus environment in which rich co-curricular offerings complement the primary academic mission. About 30 percent of each graduating class goes on to graduate school, with recent alumni accepted into law schools, medical schools, and in other advanced degree programs. New Facilities. The $25 million Ames Library (at right), a place where books, journals and other materials of intellect and culture are complemented by exciting computer and information technology, opened in 2002 and the recent $6 million renovation of the Memorial Gym has resulted in the Hansen Student Center, a facility designed to meet the social, recreational, and educational needs of IWU students. IWU’s attractive and well-maintained 73acre campus saw approximately $51 million in new construction in the 1990s, including the Shirk Center for Athletics and Recreation (1994), the Center for Natural Science Learning and Research (1995), the Center for Liberal Arts (1997) as well as a

Illinois Wesleyan Notes HOT STREAK: Since falling to 14-17 overall on April 29, the Titans have gone 13-3 and have won seven straight games…In the last 16 games, Illinois Wesleyan is hitting .352 with a 3.83 team ERA while opponents are at .281 and 7.94. SEVEN-UP: During the seven-game winning streak, the Titans are hitting .387 and have a team earned run average of 3.29 while opponents are at .255 and 7.93…In each of the seven games during the late run, an IWU pitcher has gone seven innings. Six of those have been starting pitchers with three complete games. In one game when the starter only went two innings, reliever Joe Froelich pitched seven innings to get a regional win over Ripon. JASON PANKAU: Was named cowinner of “Pitcher of the Year” in the CCIW as he went 4-2 with 3.45 ERA against league opponents…In 10 of his 12 appearances this season he has gone at least seven innings…He need to record one out to become IWU’s leader for most innings pitched in a season…Also needs: two wins for most in season, two starts for most in season and three complete games for most in season…His 14 strikeouts vs. Benedictine (March 20) is tied for seventh most in an IWU game. The record is 20 by Bill Marsh vs. Illinois State in a 12inning game in 1948...Pankau’s career record is 15-3 with 151 strikeouts. The school mark for wins is 24 by Adam Palmer (1998-01) and for strikeouts, it is 235 by Brett Robinson (1984-87). BRENT KULAVIC: Missed entire 2009 season after having “Tommy John Surgery” in late summer 2008...Honorable mention D3baseball.com All-American and was chosen as the “Pitcher of the Year” in the CCIW in 2008…Also first team all-CCIW and first team all-Central Region and NCBWA Central Region “Pitcher of the Year”…Had an overall 6-1 record with 1.82 ERA.
KKK-KULAVIC AND PAN-KKK-AU: Brent Kulavic needs 36 strikeouts and Jason Pankau needs 37 strikouts to tie for most in a single IWU season. Kulavic has 81 and Pankau has 80 - the record is 117 by Cory Lapinski in 2005…In a career, Pankau has 151 Ks and Kulavic has 140. The career record is held by Brett Robinson with 235 from 1984-87. CASEY McINTOSH: Was a 2010 second team all-conference selection…Had a 23-game hitting streak this season, the second longest at IWU, behind only Mick Curran (28 games in 2005)...Has etched his name in the IWU baseball single season record book as he has most at bats, fourth in hits, seventh in doubles, third in RBI and total bases and sixth in home runs…In an IWU career he is third in hits and games played, second in home runs, RBI, total bases and games started, first in at bats and fifth in doubles…To continue his assault on the IWU record books, he needs to accomplish the following: SEASON RECORD NEEDS: 6 games for most in a season 19 runs scored for most in season 5 hits for most in season 4 doubles for most in season 6 home runs for most in season 13 RBI for most in season 18 total bases for most in season 2 sacrifice flies for most in season CAREER RECORD NEEDS: 4 games for most in career 2 games started for most in career 6 home runs for most in career 24 RBI for most in career 51 total bases for most in career 3 hit by pitch for most in career
BRETT MOORE: With Moore, last year’s “MVP”, in the lineup, the Titans are 18-11 overall and 13-5 since his return from a dislocated shoulder on April 6…He suffered a pulled hamstring early in the year causing him to miss games…Will have surgery on shoulder June 4…Tied for 17th with a career .424 on-base percentage…His father (Ed) pitched at IWU in mid-1970s (18-9, 2.95 ERA, 187 strikeouts in career) and was also a basketball teammate of Jack Sikma.
Illinois Wesleyan Notes MIKE MORRISSEY: The left-handed hitter needs two more walks to become the Titans’ season leader. he has 30 and the record is 31 (Ryan Gilfillan in 2001 and Mark Estock in 1995)...He also needs one more sacrifice to become the all-time season leader. He has 11 and is tied with Chad Rock (2001)...His 155 career hits is 18th best in an IWU uniform and he is ninth all-time with 70 career walks. KRAIG LADD, LEFTFIELD: After struggling for a good portion of the season, Ladd is another reason for the late IWU success. In the last 16 games, Ladd is hitting .390 with five doubles, two home runs and 17 RBI...That stretch has raised his average to .245 from .163…In IWU career records he is eighth in doubles, tied for 20th in home runs and games played, 12th in RBI, 15th in runs scored and 14th in hits. KRAIG LADD, QUARTERBACK: This is the second starting assignment in an NCAA event this year for the senior. He was the quarterback for the conference champion football team last fall that finished 102 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III playoff before losing to eventual national champion Wisconsin-Whitewater…He finished his career No. 2 at the school in completions, No. 3 in touchdown passes (58) and total offense and No. 4 in passing yards.
McDERMOTT’S HOT MAY: Sophomore catcher Mark McDermott was batting .265 after going 0-for-5 in a doubleheader vs. Elmhurst. Since that time he is hitting .431 and has raised his average to .331…He was the NCAA Division III Regional all-tournament “MVP” as he batted .571…He has been hitting .542 during the seven-game win streak...Needs seven more doubles for most in an IWU season. RYAN HOPP: An injury to Brett Moore proved to be the best thing that happened to Ryan Hopp this season - when Moore went down with a shoulder injury April 6, Zach Scott moved from centerfield to second base and Hopp was inserted in center. Prior to April 6, he had only 27 at bats and was hitting .222 when Moore returned, Scott moved to short and Hopp stayed in center because he has hit .378 since April 6 and raised his season mark to .348...Had five hits in NCAA regional game vs. Ripon, second most in an IWU single game.
After falling to 14-17 on April 29, the Titans are 13-3 and have won seven straight. A look at some of the batting averages, then, now, and along the way:
