ILLINOIS WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY

I

llinois Wesleyan University, founded in 1850, enrolls about 2,100 undergraduates in the College of Liberal Arts, with 17 academic departments, and in the Schools of Art, Music, Nursing and Theatre Arts. The 2004 edition of The Fiske Guide to Colleges lists the University as one of its 22 “best buys” among the nation’s private colleges, describing Illinois Wesleyan as “at once cozy and diverse, loaded with opportunities for ambitious students.” Emphasizing a distinctive liberal arts curriculum as the central feature of every student’s education, IWU also provides opportunities for professional and pre-professional preparation. The student-faculty ratio of 12-to-1 means that the University’s students are active participants in their education, often working individually with faculty members on research. As a residential university, Illinois Wesleyan provides a vibrant campus environment in which rich co-curricular offerings complement the primary academic mission. About 30 percent of each graduating class goes on to graduate school, with recent alumni accepted into law schools, medical schools, and in other advanced degree programs. New Facilities. The $25 million Ames Library (at right), a place where books, journals and other materials of intellect and culture are complemented by exciting computer and information technology, opened in 2002 and the recent $6 million renovation of the Memorial Gym has resulted in the Hansen Student Center, a facility designed to meet the social, recreational, and educational needs of IWU students. IWU’s attractive and well-maintained 73-acre campus saw approximately $51 million in new construction in the 1990s, including the Shirk Center for Athletics and Recreation (1994), the Center for Natural Science Learning and Research (1995), the Center for Liberal Arts (1997) as well as a residence hall, accommodating 118 students in suite-like apartments (1997). The Shirk Center was funded in part by a $5 million gift from the Russell and Betty Shirk Foundation of Bloomington. The Shirk family owns Beer Nuts, Inc.®, the Bloomington-based snack food company. The two-level, 135,344-square foot complex seats 2,680 in its performance arena, and contains four multi-use courts for tennis, volleyball, basketball, as well as racquetball courts, a 200-meter track, a training room and wellness center, classrooms, and other facilities. In 1999 the Jack Horenberger Baseball Field was opened, which paved the way in 2000 for new softball and soccer fields. The science center has 15 technologically-equipped classrooms, lecture halls, and seminar rooms; 18 teaching labs; 27 research labs; and facilities for computers. The Center for Liberal Arts houses 60 faculty offices, classrooms, and facilities for social science, humanities, business and economics. Distinguished Speakers. In the past few years, IWU has hosted a number of outstanding speakers, including former U.S. Defense Secretary William Cohen, authors Maya Angelou and Kurt Vonnegut, and film

HEAD COACH DAVE BARRETT David Barrett has been the women's soccer coach at Illinois Wesleyan since April 2000 and has been the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin women's soccer "Coach of the Year" three times (2008, 2003 and 2002). Since starting at IWU, Barrett has coached one NCAA Division III AllAmerican, one Academic AllAmerican, 16 all-Central region selections, and 48 Titans have earned all-conference honors. Barrett's women's teams have compiled a nine-year overall record of 114-47-20 (.685 winning percentage) with a conference-only mark of 42-16-5 (.706). His 100th career win came in a 1-0 win vs. Wis.-Whitewater on Sept. 10, 2009. The 2009 team was undefeated in its first sixteen games (14-0-2), won 13 in a row during that stretch and was ranked as high as No. 3 in the National Soccer Coaches Association Division III poll. IWU also earned its first NCAA Division III playoff win (in overtime vs. Carroll). In 2008, the Titans won the school’s first-ever outright College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin championship in women’s soccer, and advanced in the NCAA Division III tournament for the first time in school history. Barrett’s 2005 team became the first IWU soccer team (either gender) to be selected to play in the NCAA Division III tournament. The 2006 Titans were ranked as high as No. 24 in the National Soccer Coaches Association Division III poll. The 2002 Titans were the CCIW tourney runners-up and were ranked No. 9 in the final Central Region poll. The 2004 team earned national votes midseason and played in the inaugural Midwest Association of Athletic Conferences postseason tournament.

For four seasons (2000-04), Barrett coached both the men's and women's teams at IWU, relinquishing the men's job after the 2004 campaign. His four-year men's overall record was 25-43-5 (.377) with a league mark of 6-17-2 (.280). Barrett earned a bachelor of arts degree in 1993 from Wesleyan University (Conn.), where he was a three-year starter, at one point starting 41 consecutive games. A goalkeeper, Barrett holds the school's career records for victories (with 36), shutouts (17.5) and goals against average (0.80). He played on the 1991 team that was 15-1-1, won the East Coast Athletic Conference and Little Three championships, and were ranked No. 7 nationally in NCAA Division III. From 1997-2000, Barrett was an assistant men's coach at Yale and, in those four seasons, the teams were a combined 43-23-4. In 1999 the Bulldogs reached the NCAA round of 16 and were No. 18 in the final national poll. Barrett was the head soccer coach for the Connecticut Olympic Development Program from 1997-98, working with 25 boys in the under-14 and under-15 age group. Barrett was head boys' soccer coach at Suffield Academy (Conn.) from 1995-97 and head coach of boys' soccer at Bridgton Academy (Maine) in 1994-95. David and his wife, Kelly, reside in Bloomington and are the parents of a son, Sam (born Oct. 9, 2007), and a daughter, Riley (born Feb. 12, 2010). WOMEN’S TEAMS Year Overall Pct.
