STATE OF THE MARKET:
JANUARY - JUNE (H1) 2023
Sales
SALES DOWN BUT AVERAGE ASKING PRICE UP
What the first half of 2023 has shown us is that the sales market seems to be normalizing after a two-year high, to levels more in line with the state of the market in 2019. Following a trend that started in the third quarter of 2022, the first six months of 2023 have witnessed a -43% decrease in sales compared to the record-breaking first half of 2022. Interestingly, the European market accounted for 65% of global transactions with Italian-built yachts recording most sales, representing 46% of total yachts sold during the first six months of 2023.
Notably, however, the yacht market witnessed an increase in terms of average asking prices. The first half of 2023 saw a +6% in the value of yachts sold compared to the same period in 2022, generating a total transaction value of $3.4 billion. March 2023 recorded the highest value for new build sales ($274 million), while May was the strongest month in value sales for brokerage ($974 million). Overall, the average deal value (new build and used) was $11,6 million and the average length 35.7 meters (117’1”).
STRONG SALES INCREASE OF YACHTS ABOVE 164’ (50M)
Sales in the 164’ (50m)+ size range saw a jump compared to last year, accounting for 11% of all deals (vs. just 6% in 2022). This increase in the larger size segment indicates a continuous demand for larger yachts among UHNWIs. The current macroeconomic environment does not seem to have had a negative effect on the market. In fact, in H1 2023, the market saw 41 yachts sold, while only 49 yachts were listed for sale.
NEW-BUILD YACHT PRICES EXPECTED TO REMAIN HIGH
The past two years saw an unprecedented number of new build yachts sold, coupled with a current order book with deliveries scheduled for 2023 onwards. Many notable shipyards are already at high capacity, with limited slots until 2027, making new build projects for sale and newly delivered brokerage yachts a great opportunity. Over the coming months, new-build yacht prices are expected to remain high driven by inflation and demand for larger vessels. As a result of full construction slots, shipyards have seen a decline in new build offers or have pushed them back to 2027.

REST OF YEAR MARKET OUTLOOK
We anticipate a stronger Q3 and Q4 in terms of sales, with more yachts continuing to enter the market. Even though there was no apparent increase in sales numbers from the frequent price updates in H1 2023, it is anticipated that prices will further decrease in the next six months. This decrease in prices is expected to align well with the higher demand experienced during the boat show season. The most significant price improvements are projected to occur in the smaller size range, with an anticipated increase in the percentage value of price reductions. With the end of the summer season and the upcoming yacht shows season, we anticipate more owners listing their yachts to ensure a sale before the end of the year.
As per sales records, we expect the second half of 2023 to be in line with 2019 and 2020 figures. Based on the current market environment, we anticipate 2023 to close at approximately 850 sales deals globally.
IYC RANKS #2 IN YACHTS SOLD GLOBALLY
IYC continues to lead the market, ranking #2 in number of yachts sold globally and #1 among LYBRA (Leading Yacht Brokers Association) members in the first half of 2023. In this time, IYC also broke records with the sale of three 70-meter new-build Admiral Superyachts for one owner, accounting for 21% of new-build yachts above 197’ (60m) sold in these first six months. This transaction increased IYC’s current builds with The Italian Sea Group to seven superyachts further strengthening the fruitful partnership with TISG, five of which above the 70-meter mark. This also includes the two 236’ (72m) projects in collaboration with Giorgio Armani.
“IYC has continued to show a very positive trend in sales in 2023, with the company now ranking 2nd in number of yachts sold globally. This first half of the year has seen us break records with a remarkable sale of three 70m newbuild Admirals to one owner. While the market appears to be returning to pre-pandemic levels, we are witnessing an increase in the average value of yachts newly listed on the market. We expect an even stronger Q3 and Q4 in terms of sales, with more yachts continuing to enter the market.”
-- Raphael Sauleau, CEO IYC
Irini Saranti, Chief Digital Officer at IYC added, "Even though the sales market seems to have returned to pre-pandemic levels in terms of demand, what seems to have remained steady is the increase in the number of purchase requests generated online. IYC has been investing in Search Engine Optimization and digital advertising, with IYC.COM becoming a significant source of leads for the company. Travel restrictions and technology advancement drove more clients to do their primary research online, and what we are seeing is that despite slower market demand the number of leads is growing year on year."

these destinations, however, we believe that the reopening of Mediterranean destinations to them in 2022 resulted in the selection of alternative vacation options for the winter season.
Mediterranean summer charters account for more than 90% of total bookings, and experienced a significant 23% increase in 2022. Overall the 2023 season is seeing healthy charter activity in this region , but is expected to be a little slower compared to last year. More yachts have entered the charter market in Greece and France, with both regions experiencing fewer average number of weeks booked on each yacht.
2023 CHARTER SEASON EXHIBITING HEALTHY ACTIVITY
Following a record year for the charter market, the 2023 charter season is exhibiting healthy activity. Monthly booking requests seem to have ‘normalized’, returning to a more regular demand pattern in line with the pre-pandemic period. Travel constraints during the pandemic resulted in a high number of last minute charters and an atypical booking request pattern.
Despite comprising 91% of winter season bookings, the Bahamas and Caribbean experienced a slower season than in 2022. This trend was reflected in the holiday season in general. As US based clients are the primary charterers in
While 2023 experienced a slower winter charter season (November 2022 to April 2023), with a -6% decrease in bookings overall, destinations such as South East Asia experienced a notable increase in bookings, accounting for 7% of the total. Additionally, the South Pacific and Indian Ocean regions saw an increase in bookings, representing 12% of the total for Winter 2023. The coming 2024 winter charter season (November 2023 to April 2024) is already recording bookings, which are expected to pick up after the summer season.
WINTER SEASON - OVERVIEW
SUMMER SEASON BOOKINGS BY DESTINATION
The East Mediterranean is the region with the highest demand, accounting for 53% of total bookings in 2023 YTD (Year To Date) and recording a 5% market share increase versus last year.
• Greece retains its position as the #1 charter destination globally, with a 3% share increase in 2023 YTD. Low rates in duty-free fuel and VAT favored yachting activity in the country.
• Croatia records a 2% market share increase in bookings versus 2022.
• Turkey reflects a market share in line with last year, at 7%.

The West Mediterranean accounts for 44% of total summer charters, reflecting a slower booking rate, with a lower market share (-4%) versus last year. The number of yachts with bookings is higher compared to the East Mediterranean, but with a lower average of weeks booked.
• France retains its position as the #2 summer destination (19%), with stronger activity in the 131’ (40m)+ segment, reflecting a decline versus 2022 (21% market share)
• Italy ranks #3 (19%), equal to last year.
• Spain (Balearics) market share reaches 6%, in decline versus 2022 (7%)
Booking activity in The Indian Ocean was in line with previous years, with most charters happening in the Maldives. The South Pacific saw a small increase compared to previous years.
LATEST CHARTER MARKET TRENDS
With the cost of goods and fuel at a high, clients are requested to pay a higher APA (35% or 40% versus 30% of the total charter fee) to cover the cost of provisions and running expenses for their charter.
Especially in the smaller yacht size segment, clients are favoring yachts that have lower fuel consumption, including luxury catamarans and sailing yachts due to higher fuel prices. Consequently, destinations that can offer more ‘fuel efficient’ itineraries (eg. a charter in a cluster of islands closely located to each other) or have a favorable VAT structure, are expected to gain market share.
WINTER SEASON - OVERVIEW
Bookings for the 2023 YTD summer season in The Bahamas and New England are lower than 2022, which was already considered a slow year, with market share dropping from 5% to 4%. Travel restrictions during the pandemic had boosted charters, but US based clients seem to prefer to venture to the other side of the Atlantic for their charter vacation. Bookings in these regions tend to happen closer to the season. We expect some extra bookings to be confirmed by the end of the season.

IYC RETAINS ITS LEADERSHIP POSITION
With 140+ yachts available for charter, IYC retains its position as the leading company in the charter market, managing the largest superyacht fleet worldwide across all key cruising grounds. Our Market Intelligence department highlights that in 2023 to date, the IYC charter fleet has grown by +13%, with the addition of 20 new listings. The company has also recorded the highest number of weeks booked on its fleet across key competitors. During the first six months of the year, IYC booked over 500 contracts, translating into over $71 million in charter fees and 3,800 days of charter booked.

It is widely acknowledged that time saved is money earned. In the pursuit of extracting the most from each fleeting tick, the combination of yachting and private aviation stand out as a perfect pairing, ensuring that both the destination and the journey are moments equally as valuable in the pursuit of unforgettable experiences.
Seas & Skies: The Best of Both Worlds
Private travel through the seas and the skies shared a common surge in activity as the pandemic made increased privacy, security, and control over one’s environment ever more necessary, resulting in record-breaking years for both the yachting industry and private aviation sectors. As the yacht market normalizes back to pre-pandemic levels, the demand for and benefits drawn from the use of private aircrafts in tandem with yachting experiences continue to be strong.
Official partner to IYC, HeliFlite, who have been the premiere private aviation company serving the Northeast of the United States for over 25 years, have observed that “as smaller, private tours and experiences have become more of a desired, luxurious experience, the desire and need to incorporate private aviation has grown as well.”
Making use of private aviation is “the greatest addition to a yacht you can possibly imagine,” says Mark Elliott, Sales & Charter Consultant at IYC. A reference name in the industry when it comes to pairing yachting with private aviation, Elliott owns his own small fleet of private aircrafts. Not only has he bought and sold more than 50 aircrafts for his own use, he has also built more helipads than anybody else in the business.
The most obvious benefits gained from traveling privately are time saved, convenience, and increased efficiency. When traveling by private jet to an airport near your yacht, one avoids all the commercial experiences from waiting in line, to lengthy security checks, and is able to curate their journey according to their own schedule and to the destination of their choice. In this regard, a client traveling to their yacht on a private jet will ultimately get there quicker and get much closer to the vessel.
ISSUE 10 2023 15
“Making use of private aviation is the greatest addition to a yacht you can possibly imagine.”
-- Mark Elliott, Sales & Charter Consultant at IYC
IYC partner HeliFlite offers unparallel services in Florida for private helicopter flights
IYCCharter Consultant, Katy Carter, adds “flexibility is key.” When planning a charter on the French Riviera, for example, one flying in commercial would land at Nice Airport and expect sometimes up to a further 3 hours of travel to get to their yacht. Landing at private airports such as Cannes-Mandelieu or St.Tropez-La Mole however, allows seamless transport to the yacht in minutes where lunch is prepared on the aft deck and guests can jump right in the water and start enjoying every minute of their time on board.
President of IYC official partner, Sheltair, Lisa Holland, runs the largest privately-owned aviation network in the United States, operating 16 FBOs and managing 4.5 million square feet of hanger property. “Flying commercial is like rolling a dice,” she says. “Flying private today promises clients peace of mind, certain they will get to their destination on time and have their car or helicopter to take them to their final destination waiting on the tarmac when they arrive.”
Providing clients with point-to point travel, there is no better tender than a helicopter. “Once you land on a yacht by helicopter, you will never want to go back to normal ways.” says Elliott.
Indeed, the use of helicopters in combination with yachting offer a whole host of benefits. Beyond the simple convenience of getting guests to and from their yacht more efficiently, “the helicopter becomes an unbelievable vehicle for touring,” says Elliott.
Referring back to his previous life as a Captain, Elliott shares that his most popular use of the helicopter included embarking on aerial tours, often meeting the yacht en route to another destination and landing directly on the yacht underway. In doing so, the helicopter also becomes a great tool to provide a visual of the areas you travel through. In the Caribbean, he remembers, “we would circle the yacht by helicopter and let the owner decide which anchorages and beaches he wanted to visit with the yacht. It offered them a great quick snapshot view.”
By and large, “helicopters are unbelievably fast, efficient and exciting,” he says. “In Europe we could be water skiing in Villefranche in the afternoon, hop on the helicopter and be snow skiing within an hour. The sky's the limit because you can land just about anywhere. We’ve gone to waterfalls, had picnics in the jungle, had people go surfing from the helicopter, dropping them off outside break, we’ve been on glaziers in Alaska… The adventure possibilities are endless.”

Increasingly popular, especially in the Bahamas and the Caribbean, is the use of seaplanes. Offering many of the same benefits as helicopters, sea planes are quick and practical, offer breathtaking views, and allow guests to land in the open water and walk straight onto their yacht. “This also means the yacht can bypass marinas and wait for guests in a peaceful anchorage of their choice,” says Carter.
While these private aircrafts are particularly beneficial for clients, there are a number of ways in which they are helpful to the yacht and the crew, whether for exchanging guests efficiently without disrupting the yacht’s itinerary, moving crew and provisions back and forth, or in some cases, their medevac possibilities.
The unparalleled swiftness of private jets, the adaptability of helicopters, and the unmatched access seaplanes provide, all find unique synergy with time enjoyed on board a yacht, inviting us to discover new horizons and cultivate deeper connections with our environment. Traveling private offers more than just an avenue to reach destinations faster; it symbolizes the power of choice and the decision to make every minute count.
However, this is not without its responsibilities. With this privilege comes a duty to uphold the values of environmental consciousness and care of our impact on the skies and seas. While we praise the benefits of private air travel, we must do so with an understanding of our carbon footprint and a commitment to seeking sustainable solutions for both aviation and maritime industries.

Getting In The Spirit
BLISS | for CHARTER | p.98
Whisky and wine are two delectable drinks at opposite ends of the spectrum, yet both are enjoying a small batch resurgence. IYC has partnered with two specialist companies – TopWhiskies and Wine Access – who offer an insider’s perspective on storage, tasting and what to enjoy when exploring aboard your superyacht.
In the world of artisan spirits, it’s all about full flavor and specialist distilleries. Ed Leigh, founder of TopWhiskies, stocks a range of limited editions, many of which are single cask releases. The rarest bottle in his inventory is a Macallan 1989 bottled by Samaroli which retails for £6,000. “It’s one of the most prestigious distilleries aged for over three decades and bottled by one of the most prestigious bottlers,” he says.
Located in the heartland of Northern California’s Napa Valley, Wine Access founded by AJ Resnick stocks a collection of wine curated by master sommeliers and international wine judges, as well as direct imports from prominent Champagne growers. “Terroir is everything when it comes to wine and those grown in very limited production in desirable areas with limited availability drive demand,” he says.
Regardless of preference, protocols should be observed when cruising into sipping season.

WHISKY: how to drink it
There is no right way to consume whisky. Enjoyed the world over in craft cocktails, paired with a mixer or savored as a peaty dram, whisky is an adaptable spirit. However, there are structured tasting suggestions that can finetune the taste and experience. Using a glass with a narrow top will help to concentrate the aromas, while holding the glass will bring it to room temperature.
“Allow the whisky to breathe for a few minutes before tasting, especially if it’s the first pour,” says Leigh. “Keep the whisky on your tongue for a few seconds or some say a second for every year it’s spent aging in a cask.”
The first step is appearance. Look at the color and viscosity. Lighter colors may indicate a more youthful whisky in an ex-bourbon cask. Darker colors may point to an older whisky or one that’s been aged in a cask style, such as sherry. Next is the nose. Smelling a whisky helps to detect aromas – just a soft inhalation, not a deep snort. Give the glass a swirl to open the flavors and look for ‘legs’ – the number of droplets that form inside the glass. How quickly they run will indicate the alcohol content; the thicker the legs, the more potent the whisky. Hold the first sip in the mouth and move it around the palate to determine the texture or viscosity – is it sticky or thick? The second sip is to determine flavors. Common ones to look for include cereal, fruity, floral, peaty, caramel, woody and winey. Then it’s all about the ‘finish’ or length of time that flavor profiles are detectable. Fleeting flavors are a short finish, lingering ones are long and can evolve as they fade.
HORIZONS MAGAZINE 22
Adding water, especially to cask strength whisky, will help mitigate a burning sensation. Some prefer to add ice, though it’s best avoided when sampling, says Leigh: “It will cause the flavor molecules to contract and make it harder to discover its full profile.”
Yet transparent glass cellars can create issues around UV exposure, not to mention noise, vibration and humidity. Climate control measures are important factors. Whether red, white or sparkling, the ideal storage temperature is between 53°F (12°C) and 59°F (15°C). What really matters is the temperature the wine is consumed at.
Top tips for oenophiles looking to create bespoke wine storage on the high seas include an air-conditioning expansion unit in case the main HVAC system shuts down. Neoprenelined shelves that sit at a seven-degree slant to keep the corks in constant contact with liquid, and they can help to keep bottles “sea fastened” too, even during choppiest of ocean passages.
WINE: how to store it
From Chateau d’Yquem to Louis Latour Corton Charlesmagne, the volume of attention-grabbing wine is growing by the day. But vintage varietals are almost being outdone by the creative wine cellars commissioned to store them. In the dizzy world of superyacht design, the line between functional storage and sculptural art is a steely shade of gray.
Examples of inventive solutions include three-meter floorto-ceiling glass-fronted ‘wine walls’ and integrated display units that expand forwards and upwards.

WHISKY
suggestions by Ed Leigh of TopWhiskies
‘Nip and nibbles’ on the aft deck: When relaxing post-watersports enjoying a drink before dinner, pair a nip of Mac-Talla Mara, an Islay whisky named after the sea, with a few nibbles, such as cheese, chocolate and nuts. It’s the perfect coupling.
Partying with friends:
Whisky and a beer can be an enjoyable combination bringing a ‘short’ and ‘long’ drink together for the best of both worlds.
Consider trying both complementary and contrasting styles and do it with a measure of Brig O’Perth 125th anniversary release. It’s a great example of a high-quality, old style blended malt that won’t break the bank.
Cigars in the snug:
Whisky and cigars are a popular match, especially when cruising colder climes. A dram of Ferg and Harris – a top quality single cask – is sure to hit the spot.
WINE
suggestions by Amanda McCrossin, host of the Wine Access podcast ‘Unfiltered’
Deck time and steak sandwiches: Made in partnership with NBA Star Josh Hart, a bottle of 2021 Bank Shot Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley needs nothing but a glass and some great weather, though pair it with a Wagyu ribeye sandwich and a side serving of caramelized onions and it will amplify the sweet vibrancy of the California fruit.
Caviar, Champagne and French fries: A glass of Grumier Solera – from a grower-producer that’s making their wine in the rarest of ways – and a plate of fries is the perfect pick-me-up pre-dinner snack when the salt air has taken the wind out of your sails.
Casino Royale:
Fancy a little wager on board? With two of Bordeaux’s most heralded wines from legendary vintages, there is no loser, but the table must choose between a 1982 Margaux, a first growth in its prime drinking window, or a younger, perfectly seasoned Pontet-Canet. On theme, pair them with two rival classics - a Beef Wellington with black truffles and Dover Sole à la Meunière.

ISSUE 10 2023 27
Since her delivery in 2011 by Picchiotti, part of The Italian Sea Group, 182’9” (55.7m) GALILEO has been everywhere from the Northwest Passage to exotic islands. Under her current ownership and having recently joined the IYC charter fleet, she is a unique platform from which charter guests can discover and experience the raw beauty and warm waters of Southeast Asia & the Indian Ocean with an added thrill of adventure.
GALILEO’s new life as a charter yacht with surfing and diving capabilities is, at its core, a very personal story close to her owner’s heart. “I started surfing in my late twenties and it’s been a real passion of mine since. Surfing is all about my relationship with the ocean and I’ve been exploring the Indonesian archipelago for the last 15 years, enlarging my passion into other pursuits too, like diving and spearfishing,” they share.
After looking for the perfect yacht to level up their pursuit of exploration, GALILEO ticked all the boxes in terms of her range, her pedigree, and capabilities to fulfill the adventures her owner was after and wanted to share through their charter program. “I wanted to embody my passions on this boat, to relate it to other people and create a charter yacht that can go to those remote and unexplored places to search for forgotten and secret waves around the world.”
To prepare for this, her owner went on board extensively with their core group of friends who also enjoy surfing, diving, and spearfishing in order to collect notes from handson experience on what needed to be improved, which equipment was needed, and how to run the program.

GALILEO is surf-friendly, but not only: her crew of 11 has extensive knowledge of Southeast Asia.
-- Owner, GALILEO
The result of this is a new and improved GALILEO, fresh from an extensive interior refit completed in 2023. They worked with local designer Anita Horn, who has designed many high end luxury villas in Bali to help bring a South Asian, tropical feel on board. The renewed spirit of the boat came alive through the changing of every photo on the wall and the addition of more modern and tropical looking elements such as a new dining table made from 300 year old teak sourced from Java.
Above all, however, the refit was approached with adventure in mind, with a key new feature being the rebuild of the lazarette to make it fit for purpose, with improved access to dive, surf, and gym equipment. The transformation of a multi purpose room that added no particular value to the yacht before now serves as a dive and surf guide area where they are able to get specialist dive and surf experts set up to plan and prepare the days ahead.
With boards and the capacity to cater for every level of surfer on board, and locations for all levels too, the waves beckon any guest ready to paddle towards the break. For those less interested in taking part in the action, anchorage-permitting, the Captain will anchor the main boat off at a distance for the comfort of those on board who can watch their friends and family catch and ride waves from a calmer area.
For those remaining on board, the more traditional fleet of toys is available too. Complete with Jet Skis, wakeboards, water skis, paddle boards, canoes, a seabob, there is something to keep everyone entertained, not to mention three tenders which is considerable for a yacht of her size.
HORIZONS MAGAZINE 30

A unique offering on board is the chance to come home with tangible memories. GALILEO is host to a full infantry of underwater cameras and deckhand, Alejandro, who doubles as a photographer and editor, gifts clients with a short video to take home at the end of their trip of what they got up to while on charter.
No time spent on board GALILEO would be as special without acknowledging the waters and islands she cruises through. Captain of GALILEO, Anthony Daebritz, has been cruising Southeast Asia for 25 years and brings unique knowledge to the charters he leads. “Unlike in the Caribbean or in the Mediterranean, you really feel like you’re out there by yourself,” he says. The islands, adorned like jewels in emerald waters, are blanketed by ceaseless tropical jungles and simmering volcanoes, while life under the surface leads to the discovery of vast coral reefs, undiscovered species, immense manta rays and breathtaking submerged landscapes. “You go to Europe for culture and history,” says Daebritz, “but you come to the Indian Ocean and Southeast Asia for its diversity and raw beauty.”
31
Top left: Komodo Islands
Her owner affirms that what makes this area truly special is its people. “They have an extremely happy culture. It’s a very diverse group of islands. Languages change from island to island and every religion in the world is found in Indonesia. It’s a true melting pot.”
Both agree, however, that the best thing about Indonesia is that the distance between islands is not so great, allowing for maximum exploration with minimal time lost traveling in between.
One of the best kept secrets in the area, according to her owner and Captain, is the small nation of Timor-Leste, located east of the archipelago. Uncrowded and considered a prime diving spot by those in the know, Timor-Leste boasts unspoiled coral reefs and is teaming with wildlife, including dolphins and whales. "For superyachts, Timor-Leste provides a safe, welcoming and professional harbour to access some of the most remote parts of the world that are really the last frontier in terms of exploration,” GALILEO’s owner says.
The Southeast Asian local flair is transported on board and delivered on the plate. Maltese chef Martin Bugeja makes his guests’ palettes travel serving up a wide range of cuisines, all with a little twist of local zest and wonderful blends of aromatic spices. With the yacht’s spearfishing capabilities, GALILEO’s owner says it’s part of the culture on board to try and catch a fish and give it to the chef to cook up and plate for dinner. In those waters, it isn’t uncommon to catch anything from Spanish mackerel to tuna, jobfish, and snapper, to name a few. And to cap it off, sip on the yacht’s signature tropical rum-based cocktail to carry the local flavors into the night.
GALILEO’s cruising through these areas is not without considering preserving the beauty of that environment.
“Particularly with our dive master when we go scuba diving,” says Daebritz, “we focus on leaving the reef as undisturbed as possible.” Her owner recognizes that spearfishing may be a contentious subject for some, but their approach is one that sees the activity not only as entertainment, but as “a good way to be sustainable in terms of utilizing what you catch yourself rather than fish from a long supply chain with carbon or fossil fuels to be delivered on your plate.”
HORIZONS MAGAZINE 32
GALILEO operates with an eco-approach. “We try to do our best to reduce our footprint,” says Daebritz. GALILEO's hull design and engines are very fuel efficient with a 9,000nm range. The yacht also abides as much as they can to the principles outlined in the Green Stewardess, an eco-aware initiative that educates on supplying eco-friendly products and solutions to yachts and crew. Among these principles is the use of a water filtration system on board and trying to do away with single use plastics as much as possible, as well as using biodegradable, non-toxic, and reusable products where possible.
Beyond its lavish amenities and exciting program, GALILEO’s commitment to environmental sustainability sets it apart as a beacon of responsible tourism. In a time when our oceans face unprecedented challenges, a powerful message is shared: the preservation of our oceans is not a choice, but an imperative. Fostering a deeper understanding of marine ecosystems and more sustainable operations, GALILEO exemplifies the harmonious coexistence of luxury living and beautiful, untouched nature.
In an era when discerning travelers seek experiences that go beyond the ordinary, GALILEO emerges as an embodiment of those desires, inviting guests to step out of their comfort zone and embrace the thrill of the unexplored.
GALILEO is available for charter with IYC. More information available on page 56.

St Barts stands out as possibly the most exclusive island in the Caribbean. Like most other islands in this area, it has experienced occupation by many different settlers throughout history. The lasting influences are mainly Swedish and, of course, French, with the island now a collectivity of France. Picture a tropical paradise exuding the charm and elegance of the French Riviera, and you have St Barts. Travelers can relish in high-end retail shopping in the capital city of Gustavia, then step out in the evening wearing their latest purchase. Best Time To Visit:
The island’s climate is warm yearround, but the social scene is at its very best around New Year’s Eve, and the legendary regattas - St Barts Bucket and Les Voiles de St Barts, are held in late March and April each year.
Key Cruising Areas:
All cruises should include time in Gustavia, as well as anchoring out at some of the many beautiful beaches found on St Barts and its surrounding islands and islets. If you are keen to explore more of the Caribbean, it is within easy reach of the nearby Dog Island, Anguilla, and St. Maarten.
Best Spots for Wining and Dining:

If a beach club is your scene, head to the exclusive Nikki Beach or Shellona, and if you are seeking relaxation instead, don’t miss Le Toiny or Christopher to indulge in a day of spa treatments and sitting by the pool.
Best Local Dish:
Although there are plenty of excellent Creole dishes on the island, St Barts is most famous for its French cuisine. And of course plenty of the freshest fish.
Local Culture:
The island’s first successful European settlement was founded by French buccaneers, giving St Barts a strong French identity, but also creating legend of buried treasure, with bounty said to lie in the coves of Anse du Gouverneur and the sands of Saline. Apart from a spell as a Swedish free port (a status the island had kept) which left the capital city with its name, Gustavia, the cultural influences here have remained mainly French.
Best Beaches:
Anse de Grande Saline beach is one of the island’s most beautiful, with white sand, clear waters and no buildings along this stretch of coastline to break the view. A strong second is Colombier, locally known as Rockefeller’s beach. This unspoiled beach is only accessed by foot or boat and is the ideal spot for a picnic. Key Cruising Areas:
The Florida Keys are renowned for their incredible coral reefs and underwater ecosystems. John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park and Looe Key Marine Sanctuary offer some of the best snorkeling and diving opportunities. A mecca for fishing enthusiasts, opportunities are boundless for deep-sea fishing, falts fishing, or reef fishing. Head to Elliot Key for sweet sand and bombay blue waters. A local favorite, Hogfish Bar
& Grill on Stock Island is known for its casual, waterfront setting and delicious seafood dishes. Their specialty “hogfish” sandwich is a must-try.
Best Local Dish:
A visit to the Keys isn’t complete without indulging in the region’s signature dessert, Key Lime Pie. Many local establishments serve up their own delicious versions of this pie made with lime juice, egg yolks and sweetened condensed milk.
Local Culture:
Throughout time, Key West has been a haven for pirates, wreckers, writers, fishermen, artists, free spirits, all of whom have made it their abode, shaping a dynamic environment of tolerance and ingenuity. The island’s distinct neighborhoods demonstrate and preserve their unique and charming characteristics by embracing their original Bahamian Conch, Cuban and African-American cultural roots evident through one-of-a-kind traditions, festivities and architectural styles. Key Biscane is another stunning getaway with quaint neighborhoods, lovely beaches, and lush greenery. Visitors can enjoy pristine nature parks perfect for walking, hiking, or biking. The island has a rich history and offers a range of cultural experiences with art museums, theaters, and historical sites to explore.

Owning The Experience
Yacht charters provide the holiday of a lifetime. Yacht ownership affords freedom and spontaneity. When combined, the result is a circulatory ownership cycle that gifts flexibility, personalisation and even fiscal compensation.
When Kypros Tsentas, owner of 164’ (50m) OURANOS, first dipped his toe in the charter market in 2006, it changed the course of his life. “It all began with a 75 footer that I chartered with my family in the Ionian Sea,” he says. “It was the holiday we had always dreamed of, and within three months I’d bought my own boat, a Falcon 100.”
In 2010, he embarked on his first new build, co-designed by his wife and daughter. “I like fast boats and this yacht had a top speed of 28 knots.” He spent an average of 45 days aboard each year, chartering it out in between to cover expenses. “By then I was hooked, and a few years later I decided to go even bigger,” he says.
Tsentas took delivery of OURANOS in 2016. As before, the family took control of the yacht’s interior, designing it to the same standard as their family home. “We gave it high ceilings and used expensive materials. It’s been a love affair from the start,” he says.
While most owners choose where they wish to cruise, the ability to piggyback off destinations where the yacht is booked to charter is a valuable and cost saving option. The benefits of owning a successful charter yacht are, for Tsentas, a no-brainer.

“I can no longer compare charter with ownership, one is a holiday, the other is freedom. That’s what ownership is to me – the freedom of choice and the freedom to spend more time with my family.”

OURANOS, for charter p. 78
It's a similar story for Luka Bubalo, owner of classic 1970s yacht LA PERLA (see page 188), which underwent a major refit in 2023. He put his own stamp on the refurb but did so with a true commercial charter offer in mind. “You can tell from top to bottom the level of detail that the owner put into the design of LA PERLA,” says IYC broker Jamie Swaine. “Whether you're looking at it with the view to buy or as a potential charter holiday, you won’t be disappointed.”
Boasting large accommodation with versatile sleeping arrangements for up to 26 guests, plus further cabins for a professional crew of nine, LA PERLA is both a boat designed for corporate charters and a privately cherished yacht.
“Everything you see on board represents part of my life or my business interests, and that’s important to its success,” says Bubalo. “My dream was to offer something new to the market and I believe we’ve achieved that.”
Yacht ownership affords the spontaneity to do what you want, when you want, where you want, not to mention the satisfaction of not having to rely on someone else's asset, says IYC Global Managing Partner, Michel Chryssicopoulos. “Chartering requires a high degree of flexibility or the foresight to reserve at least six months, if not a year, in advance to avoid disappointment,” he explains. “Ownership accommodates your own schedule, and in terms of costs, if you use a yacht for more than 35 days a year you're usually better off owning.”
In countries where operating expenses are lower than other areas of the world, such as the charter hot spot of Greece, the incentive to own rather than charter is even greater.
“We have a few owners who chartered before owning, and now enjoy owning so much they have a fleet of boats,” says Chryssicopoulos, citing one family who currently has a trio of 230’ (70m) Admiral GC-Force 70 yachts on order.

Around 80% of IYC owners choose to make their yachts available for charter. That includes American businessman Mike Kohlsdorf, who decided to charter for the first time in 2019 and embarked on three charters – two in the Caribbean and one aboard GECO (see page 58) to cruise the Greek islands. His experience was life changing. “I knew I had to buy a yacht,” he says.
With the help of IYC Sales Consultant and Managing Partner California Matthew Stone, he scoured the market before Benetti’s 121’ (37m) Motopanfilo stopped him in his tracks.
-- Owner, KOJU

“I thought it was incredible, from the 1960s design and open-plan layout to the large windows that fill the interior with natural light. It was also the first hull and I wanted it.”
Family celebration on EROLIA, for charter, p. 106
KOJU, for sale and for charter, p. 193
Kohlsdorf took delivery of his Motopanfilo, named KOJU (see page 194), in 2021 and quickly began reaping the rewards. “We’ve cruised the Mediterranean twice, including the Monaco Grand Prix, did some flyfishing in the Exumas and spent the past two New Years in St. Barts,” he says. “When we step aboard, it feels like home.”
Making KOJU available to charter was central to Kohlsdorf’s ownership plan. “Chartering taught us what we want from a yacht, such as an amazing crew and a customised beach club with a pool at the stern,” he says. “But I look at most things through financial terms. Matt knew the charter business and financial model cold and helped me to implement every step of our charter programme. If KOJU books 17 charters or
more a year – which it has so far – we are cashflow neutral, including my own expenses.”
Like Kohlsdorf, for many owners the biggest benefit of ownership is the personalisation aspect – “I need only take a briefcase with me as the rest is already taken care of,” he says. But factoring charter into the equation can give ownership an attractive financial framework. “When you have an owner who is committed to the development of a charter program, from water toys and activities to hiring the right crew, it’s possible to offset, and in some cases, even earn a profit from charter,” says Stone. “In any case, charter can help take care of a large portion of the operating costs.”

Limitations Unbound
While rugged oceangoing vessels have been around for decades, recent years have seen a noticeable growing trend for compact explorers. IYC is proud to exclusively represent Italian shipyard, Cantiere delle Marche, in the USA, matching our expertise in the growing American market with the world’s leading explorer yacht builder. We dig deeper into this growing trend and where it is headed.
Undeniably, the definition of luxury has evolved along with clients’ taste from the simple acquisition of material commodities, to an interest in lasting experiences which frequently challenge the boundaries of the conventional superyacht. The benefits of owning a versatile, self-sufficient yacht perhaps became amplified in the face of travel restrictions and the closure of social attractions on land for some, and their masculine lines and extended ranges appealed to others seeking longer, meaningful trips to lesser touched areas.
IYC Sales Consultant and Managing Partner California, Matthew Stone, notes, “the needs and wants of our clients are changing. The desire to be in congested ports is becoming less appealing, with an increased appetite for remote destinations, sea-worthiness, and autonomy, impacting the client's needs and expectations of the yacht's capabilities. This has led to an all-time high of explorer yachts in-build and on order.”
A winner in this growing trend is Italian shipyard Cantiere delle Marche (CdM), who identified a gap in the market and discovered its niche as a shipbuilder for small to medium-sized explorer yachts ranging from 85’ to 141’ (26-43m).
HORIZONS MAGAZINE 138
ACALA | World Superyacht Award 2023 winner, 141'4" (43.1m)
Born in 2010 with a very precise aim to become the best explorer yacht builder in the world, CdM has certainly had an impact. Indeed, the yard has gained a reputation for consistently pushing the boundaries of industry norms and has risen to the forefront of explorer yacht production globally, boasting the highest number of expedition-style superyacht deliveries by a single shipyard thus far.
Four series make up the DNA of this shipyard. The Darwin Class, a true classic explorer yacht, Vasco Buonpensiere, CEO of CdM, simply explains as “rough and tough”. The Flexplorer, a yacht that still very much looks like a true explorer but “offers the flexibility to be just as cool in St. Tropez as in Ushuaïa.” Deep Blue, what Buonpensiere calls the future of yachting, “a classic, stylish boat with a very masculine and sturdy image” – this particular series awarded the yard a Neptune Award at the 2023 World Superyacht Awards with 141’ (43m) ACALA. And finally, the RJ line, without a doubt the latest milestone in explorer yachting, an explorer yacht parading as a conventional stylish “white yacht” with all the capabilities of a true explorer.
CdM partnered with IYC in their newest challenge to grow their presence in the US market. “Our explorer yachts perfectly match the way many US yacht owners use their boats,” explains Buonpensiere. “All explorer yachts built by Cantiere delle Marche, no matter their size, allow maximum freedom, range and reliability to enjoy the beauty of tropical archipelagoes, the Bahamas, the Caribbean, without stopping for refueling or provisioning.”

“This is a segment of the market you will want to keep a close eye on, as we expect exponential growth and our client's needs and desires continue to evolve,” says Stone. “With IYC acting as an extension of the shipyard in the US, we're able to offer and educate our clients on the innovation, development, and CDM's product line.”
One such current development is a line of 260 GT explorers, Buonpensiere is confident will “fill another empty niche we have identified where there is nothing comparable in terms of quality, customizability, reliability, and distinguishing characteristics.” Generally, the yard is also laser focused on continuing to evolve the explorer concept and investing in engineering developments related to propulsion, batteries, the use of materials, and performance.
At the time of publication, CdM currently has 12 yachts under construction. At capacity and with a continued growing demand, Buonpensiere says the yard is focused on growing “better and better rather than bigger and bigger,” staying true to their commitment to delivering on quality, reliability, and detailed engineering. “These yachts are handmade,” adds Buonpensiere. “We don’t want to jeopardize our quality just for the sake of growing. Therefore, we will keep growing sustainably, solidly and responsibly.”
As the yard continues to grow and innovate, Buonpensiere likens the process to a conversation, dance whereby every explorer yachtsman is seeking something different, something personal and CdM’s challenge is to adapt their way of thinking to respond to this.

-- Vasco Buonpensiere, CEO, Cantiere delle Marche
“We are witnessing a real evolution of the species,” says Buonpensiere. “We are demonstrating that in order to be an explorer, a yacht does not need to look rough and tough.”
With a CdM build, owners can have their cake and eat it too, unbounded from the limitations of the classic idea of a yacht. “We are definitely widening the perspective and yachtsmen are understanding that they can have both a stylish and modern look and be able to decide what they want to do and where they want to go with their yacht.”
In fact, CdM's capabilities aren't limited to their pre-engineered designs, which are an added convenience, to reduce build time, but are also well versed in complete custom builds working with a roster of the industry's leading naval architects and designers to deliver a purpose-built exploration yacht only defined by one's imagination.
As explorer yachts grow in popularity, they remain singular still and their distinct lines and profiles stand out from the rest. “Owning an explorer yacht states your maturity as a yachtsman,” says Buonpensiere. “They reinforce the fundamentals of the luxury world, offering yacht owners the chance to own something that is both exclusive and must be understood to be truly appreciated;” qualities, he affirms, propel that owner into a league of their own.

IYC’s new partnership with Common Seas looks at the scale of the plastic crisis and the work being done by the social enterprise to cut plastic off at the source.
Stopping Plastic In Its Tracks
The problem with plastic is the way that we use it,” says Jo Royle, founder of social enterprise Common Seas. “Nature designs regenerative and restorative systems whereas plastic is designed for one life. We need to transition our product design for multiple lives from the offset.”
The former trans-ocean sailing and racing skipper is on a mission to quickly and significantly reduce the amount of plastic produced and stop it polluting rivers and seas. Recycling is not the solution, with only around 7% of plastic materials being recycled. Instead, Royle believes the answer is to design our way out of a plastic crisis by driving new policy, investing in the circular economy and catalysing cultural shift programs.
“It’s what is referred to as ‘an upstream solution’ based on the principle that by the time plastic gets to the ocean it's too late,” explains James Simpson, Head of Communications and Marketing at
Common Seas. “We work on projects that cut plastic off at the source.” Royle first encountered the issue of plastic 20 years ago in South Georgia.“I was spending my winter seasons in the Antarctic with scientists and explorers who taught me about our relationship with nature,” Royle says. “Each year we'd see plastic further south, penguin colonies moving around to escape the warming ice and large fishing vessels in the middle of the southern nation hoovering up krill night and day. I love to be at sea because you're working in response to what mother nature throws at you, but it was a stark realisation about how much our material choices directly impact nature.”
Royle has made it her mission to raise awareness and lobby for change. Her first initiative was to sail 8,000 miles from San Francisco to Sydney on a boat called PLASTIKI made from 12,500 plastic bottles.
ISSUE 10 2023 145
"Every individual change can make a huge difference to the impact on the ocean and that is what we're trying to raise awareness of –the significant positive benefits of taking plastic out of your life.”
-- James Simpson, Head of Communications and Marketing, Common Seas
“PLASTIKI was a certified cradle to cradle vessel,” she explains. “We spent two years building it in the most harmonious way with nature and proving that if we can sustainably build a successful oceangoing yacht, then we can build everyday products.”
On her return, she began working with the Pew Charitable Trust on their Global Ocean Legacy campaign to create the first generation of fully protected marine reserves and helped to secure the UK Government’s commitment to delivering the Blue Belt, “which equates to millions of square kilometres of protected ocean.”
Today, much of the work focuses on driving new government policy to help combat current predictions that there will be four times more plastic in our oceans within the next 20 years.
“There's a lot of global chatter about plastics but very little measurable policy,” says Royle. “We’re supporting governments to set realistic goals based on the evidence and to deliver achievable strategies. It’s about helping countries to identify their roadmap to reduction.”
Active government partnerships are with Indonesia, Paros island and the Caribbean, while the plastic drawdown analysis it carried out on behalf of the government of the Maldives – which has committed to becoming the first plastic-free country and has banned the importation of bottles under 500ml – evaluated the volume of plastic bottles, tourist waste and leakage from waste transport vessels to help inform the government’s single use plastic phase out plan.
“We help local councils to measure the plastic pollution from their island by conducting marine litter audits with local people,” explains Simpson. “That involves looking at the use of plastic in the local area and looking at what washes up on the shores. It goes beyond a beach clean, which collects it in a bag and sends it to landfill. This categorises it and works out what everything is.”
One of the best case studies in the Maldives is the sustainable luxury

resorts operator, Soneva. It has eliminated all plastics from its front of house and developed a waste to wealth model that formed the blueprint for a threeday workshop facilitated by Soneva and Common Seas inviting local islands and national government to participate in a pilot project to reduce single use plastic waste. This, in turn, led to the formation of the NGO Soneva Namoona.
“The workshop culminated in all parties signing a clean blue charter that committed the government to measuring and reporting plastic waste in the Maldives,” says Royle. “We've been working ever since to deliver it and it has given us a blueprint for other countries.”
In popular charter destinations, such as the Maldives and the Caribbean, Common Seas’ projects are gearing up to a level where Simpson is confident people will see the impact of their work on the ground. These types of programs also present opportunities
for philanthropic yacht owners wanting to facilitate change, either by adopting some of the initiatives developed for hospitality and applying them to yachting, or by sponsoring island nations, such as Barbados and the Bahamas, to gain access to knowledge and gather the necessary evidence to design a holistic roadmap to less plastics.
“Across the Caribbean landfills are full and a recent study of ours carried out by scientists at Imperial College London has found there are now microplastics in our blood,” says Royle. “Any business or government with a moral compass is already working to limit global warming to 1.5°C, but we’re working towards a Global Plastics Treaty with the UN that will enforce a cap on plastics production and motivate countries and businesses to report their emissions annually and set targets for reduction. Anyone capable of providing financial support to island nations or scientific research is enabling significant positive change.”
Simpson agrees, adding: “One of the biggest challenges around climate change is the level of ‘climate despair’ that’s creeping in, whereby people feel it's too big a problem for them to do anything about. That's not the case with plastics. Every individual change can make a huge difference to the impact on the ocean and that is what we're trying to raise awareness of – the significant positive benefits of taking plastic out of your life.”

"Any business or government with a moral compass is already working to limit global warming to 1.5°C, but we’re working towards a Global Plastics Treaty with the UN that will enforce a cap on plastics production and motivate countries and businesses to report their emissions annually and set targets for reduction."

Thailand the Maldives & INSPIRING RETREATS IN
Soneva’s barefoot resorts offer enriching escapes and rare experiences.
Since launching in 1995, luxury resort Soneva has pioneered a new style of responsible travel. It shows how sustainability and indulgence can go together, from dedicated organic gardens and ‘eco centro’ waste-to-wealth centers, to eliminating single-use plastic and introducing sustainable waste management across the Maldives with independent NGO Soneva Namoona, run in partnership with social enterprise Common Seas.
At Soneva, ‘luxury’ transcends the material and focuses on the time, space and privacy needed to disconnect from the everyday. It gifts guests the opportunity to immerse in once-in-a-lifetime experiences that pair an all-star calendar of events featuring Michelin-starred chefs, sports legends and wellness therapists with a hands-on role in its conservation efforts, such as coral restoration and monitoring critically endangered turtles. There’s also a daily programme of activities for kids at The Den children’s zones.
At Soneva Fushi, lush tropical vegetation captures the essence of a castaway fantasy. Across the Indian Ocean at Soneva Jani, overwater villas feature slides straight into the lagoon. And in the Koh Kood island of Thailand, Soneva Kiri’s private villas are nestled by the beach, hidden in the jungle, or commanding spectacular views from the clifftops.
When it’s time to explore further, the resort’s 75’ (23m) yacht, Soneva in Aqua, sets sail from both Maldivian resorts equipped with seven-star service. A Barefoot Guardian forms part of the crew, along with a personal chef to prepare bespoke menus and a dedicated wellness specialist for an indulgent array of treatments on demand.
Looking ahead, Soneva will be unveiling a new ultra-luxury private island concept in late 2023, marking a milestone chapter for the award-winning sustainable resorts operator.

BLUE: HARNESSING THE POWER OF
AI
Artificial intelligence (AI) has major potential to reshape the yachting industry, but not as we think. Radical design concepts and self-piloting yachts may grab media headlines, but IYC is the first company to create and implement a new proprietary support software that seamlessly ties all yacht management operations together: BLUE.
Working as a virtual yacht manager named ‘Anna’, BLUE removes the risk of human error. Developed in-house and using multi-layers of programmed intelligence, it quickly and accurately automates administrative tasks and compliance requirements. It delivers crew, safety and document management simplifying life on board for Captains, increasing efficiency for shoreside yacht managers and giving owners peace of mind.
“This is the first time in the world that artificial intelligence is brought into the yachting industry and to yacht management,” says Celine Robins, IYC's Global Yacht Management Director. “It’s a radical development that is reshaping the yacht management landscape.”
Every yacht is a specialized company whose day-to-day running is handled by a yacht manager. It’s a demanding and time-consuming job. It’s also an essential job that ensures each yacht is maintained to a safe standard. This is where BLUE comes into its own.
Keeping track of certificates, insurances, safety deadlines and finances are just a few of the administrative tasks performed by BLUE. It rapidly responds to a Captain’s clerical requests. It alerts the Chief Officer when an engine service is due or critical equipment parts are required and produces a list of local service providers wherever the yacht happens to be in the world, therefore preventing breakdowns and saving owners money. And it performs labor-intensive yacht management duties with ease.
“When we sign a new vessel to our IYC yacht management fleet, we often need to generate personalized and vetted contracts for up to 15 crew or more, which is very time consuming,” explains Robins. “Not only is there a high risk of human error but it slows the recruitment process down

IYC is the first company in the world to introduce artificial intelligence to yachting via its virtual yacht management system, BLUE. Here’s how.
for the Captain and owner. BLUE completes hours, if not days, of work in minutes.”
Converting 30 hours of human work into one minute of artificial intelligence significantly reduces costs, which is a saving that IYC passes on to its clients. And by absorbing administrative workloads, yacht managers have more time for specialist skill-based requirements.
It’s easy to see why BLUE has proven so popular with owners and crew alike. It delivers preventative maintenance that is extremely straight-forward to use (with a phone app for on-the-go use) and ensures compliance.
Looking to the future, Robins lists virtual logbooks, including remotely logged engine hours, and remotely connecting with a vessel to check its day-to-day running as just a few of the new developments being worked on for BLUE, adding: “As the software continues to grow and AI increases its foothold in our everyday lives, the sky’s the limit with further solutions our virtual assistant will be able to provide.”
“BLUE is not about replacing people. It’s about taking care of organizational needs so that our shoreside yacht managers can focus on the daily operations of the vessel and bring personalized support to the Captain on the phone. It’s less about selling a product, and more about selling an unbeatable service.”
