Lower demand after two year high: the yacht sales industry witnessed an overall decline in both new and used transactions, extending a downward trend that started in Q3 2022. All in all, the market stabilized in 2023 after a two-year peak, aligning more closely with the figures from 2019-2020.

Strong sales increase for yachts above 197’ (60m): market data shows a notable surge in demand for yachts 197’ (60m) + over the past year, representing 7% of all transactions.

Yachts sold at higher prices: The market saw a notable rise in average asking prices, with a substantial increase of +32% compared to 2022. Preowned yachts saw the most significant surge, jumping +38% from the previous year. In contrast, new build sales experienced a more modest increase, rising by +5% on average.

Italian-built yacht transactions led the global sales market: Italian-built yacht transactions either in brokerage or new builds accounted for more than half of total closed deals in 2023 (53%). Ferretti Group ranked first, in terms of units sold in both new and pre-owned markets, followed by Azimut-Benetti and Sanlorenzo. Cantiere delle Marche had the shortest average days on the market among most units sold in 2023.

Most sales closings in Europe: European sales dominated the market, with Italy making up almost half of all yacht sales in the region.

More yachts entering the market: the number of yachts entering the market registered a +10% increase. The ratio of yachts entering the market and those finding a buyer was 10:6.6 in 2023 - lower than the market balance observed in 2019-2020.

Limited price reduction versus previous years: 2023 saw yacht average price reductions valued at $446K, -26% versus the same period a year ago, but the average price reduction applied on last asking price was only 5.4%.

2024 OUTLOOK

Top end of the market to remain active: in 2024, the overall yacht market is anticipated to grow at a slower rate compared to the previous two years. Sales of larger, higher-value yachts 197' (60m)+ are expected to remain strong, while yachts in smaller size ranges are likely to see stable sales, both for new and used yachts.

Price adjustments: Following a peak in 2023, the yacht market is returning to pre-pandemic levels. We expect sellers to adjust prices to attract buyers, especially for pre-owned yachts. However, larger pedigree yachts 164' (50m)+ are less prone to price fluctuations due to limited supply.

Increased new build inventory: 2021 and 2022 saw a surge in new yacht sales amid rising inflation and labor costs worldwide, leading to higher prices. Shipyards, already operating at high capacity, are facing increased demand with new yachts slated for 2024 delivery. Due to limited construction slots, new build offers are scarce, with some pushed back to 2028.

Macroeconomic & geopolitical landscape: Persistent inflation and high interest rates impact sales, particularly in Europe and the United States. Furthermore, shifts in generational yacht ownership may require efforts to attract new buyers.

IYC’s yearly sales outperformed the global market figures in 2023, ranking #2 among LYBRA members and #3 in yacht sales globally.

LATEST CHARTER MARKET TRENDS

A slower start to the 2024 winter season: The Bahamas and Caribbean, accounted for 76% of winter bookings. The 2023 winter season concluded at 81% in the number of weeks booked, with both destinations slightly behind in terms of bookings versus the same period a year ago. Niche destinations like Southeast Asia show improvement, claiming 24% of market share compared to 19% in 2023. Strong 2023 ‘Med’ Season: the Mediterranean saw robust activity, accounting for 96% of total summer charters. The Eastern Mediterranean experienced a higher level of activity than the Western region, but both areas showed comparable numbers to the previous year’s bookings.

The Bahamas and New England back to pre-pandemic demand for summer season: both destinations experienced slower summer seasons compared to 2021 and 2022, where travel restrictions had boosted performance. Numbers are closer to what they were in 2019, as American clients, who typically vacation in these destinations seem to be drawn to the other side of the Atlantic for their summer holidays.

More yachts entering the charter fleet in key yachting destinations: the healthy 2023 charter season coupled with an increase in yacht operational expenses, resulted in more yachts entering the charter fleet across popular yachting destinations.

Last-minute charter requests to secure favorable weather: due to shifting weather patterns, particularly in the early summer season, there was a rise in last-minute charter enquiries. Many clients were seeking to secure favorable weather conditions for their vacation and potentially negotiate better rates.

Higher advanced provisioning allowance (APA) requested: with the cost of goods and fuel at a high, clients are requested to pay a higher APA (35% or 40% versus 30% of the total charter fee) to cover the cost of provisions and running expenses for their charter.

Higher demand for fuel-efficient vessels: rising fuel prices drive demand for yachts with lower consumption, such as luxury catamarans and sailing yachts, as well as destinations offering fuel-efficient itineraries or favorable VAT structures.

Large Water Toy Collections: yachts with rich toy collections gain popularity, especially among clients visiting remote locations, providing entertainment options.

SUMMER SEASON 2023 CHARTER BOOKINGS BY LOCATION

Following an exceptionally strong 2022, the 2023 summer charter season (May - October) also showed healthy activity, reaching 95% of total 2022 charters. Bookings in the Mediterranean accounted for 96% of total summer charters.

THE BAHAMAS / NEW ENGLAND: bookings for the summer season were down -33% versus 2022, which was already considered a slow year.

GREECE RETAINS ITS POSITION AS THE #1 CHARTER DESTINATION GLOBALLY WITH A MARKET SHARE INCREASE TO 26%

EAST MEDITERRANEAN: the region with the highest demand and recording a +3% market share versus 2022.

• GREECE: retained its position as the #1 charter destination globally. Low rates in duty-free fuel and VAT favor yachting activity in the country.

• CROATIA: +1% market share increase in bookings versus 2022.

• TURKEY: market share in line with last year, at 7%.

WEST MEDITERRANEAN: accounting for 46% of total summer charters, the region was at -1% market share versus last year and -6% in bookings.

• FRANCE: retained its position as the #2 summer destination, with stronger activity in the 131’ (40m)+ segment.

• ITALY: ranks #3, equal to Summer 2022.

• SPAIN (Balearics): market share at 7%, equal to 2022.

WINTER SEASON 2023-2024 YTD CHARTER BOOKINGS BY LOCATION

The 2024 winter charter season (November 2023 to April 2024) seems to be off to a slower start than previous years. Currently, 76% of bookings are focused in the Caribbean and The Bahamas, while Southeast Asia has seen a rise in bookings, claiming 13% of the market share. The Indian Ocean is also seeing an increase in charter bookings, largely due to popularity in the Maldives.

The French Riviera is a vibrant playground for sporting enthusiasts who seek the ultimate luxury experience. Furthermore, it promises a plethora of opportunities to combine yachting and sports into one golden summer experience in 2024.

“The Monaco Grand Prix — the crown jewel event in Formula 1 — kicks off the sporting calendar in May,” says IYC Charter Consultant, Abigail Davies. “It’s a highlight of the yachting summer season, as guests watch the action with Champagne in hand from the aft deck of a superyacht.”

The 2024 Monaco Grand Prix takes place between May 23rd and 26th. The narrow, winding Monte Carlo circuit remains the most coveted, where 78 laps stretched just over 2 miles (3km) test drivers to their limits. Few events capture the spirit of the Principality as articulately as the Grand Prix, which is why trackside berths are hotly contested in a nail-biting lottery.

Yet while the adrenaline-pumping hairpin turns make for spectacular spectating, those in the know head out to sea for a more laidback affair.

“The secret that many people don’t know is that Port Hercules is not the only place to be located on race days,” says Davies. “Many charters take place at anchor amid panoramic views of the dramatic Monaco landscape. It gives the option to swap the roaring engines for a more private and intimate Grand Prix experience.”

And for those who appreciate a more classic ambiance, the biennial Historic Grand Prix takes place two weeks before. The race circuit may be the same, but the cars are of a different era. From pre-war Voiturettes to front-engine sport racing cars from the 1950s, the event, organized by the Automobile Club de Monaco (ACM), injects some vintage spirit into a modern-day game.

It's not only sports car racing that will be setting the Mediterranean alight in 2024. Nice, a hotspot on any Côte d’Azur yacht itinerary, will be the place to hop from water to land to be immersed in the spectacle of the Tour de France finish line. The 111th edition of the world's most prestigious and difficult bicycle race will start in Florence, Italy, on 29 June, and finish in Nice on the 21 July. The grueling route is expected to feature gravel roads, Alpe d'Huez twice, and Europe's highest paved road, if the reports hold true. It also serves as inspiration for guests who like to cycle when on charter.

“With the red carpet stretch of the Mediterranean featuring a cycle path that loops from Cannes to Nice, there are many opportunities during a charter to jump ashore and explore by bike,” says IYC Charter Consultant Katy Carter. “Not quite matching the hills of the Tour de France, it’s a flat ride that can be cycled at guests’ own pace with the crew from the yacht ready to pamper them at the end of a long ride.”

“For those looking to tackle something even more challenging,” she adds, “our IYC Charter Consultants can arrange for a local cycling guide to take guests off the beaten track.”

This year marks the first time since the Tour de France’s inception in 1903 that it won’t finish in (or near) Paris, owing to preparations for the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The capital city has spent the past four years preparing to host the world’s leading sporting event, happening between 26 July to 11 August. Landmark areas have been earmarked for key events, with the Eiffel Tower delivering a dramatic backdrop to the beach volleyball tournaments, the Champ-de-Mars hosting judo and wrestling, and the Pont Alexandre III providing an exceptional setting for the triathlon and marathon swimming events.

Breaking with tradition, the Opening Ceremony will not be held in a stadium but will instead unfold on the Seine River and Paris' quays and bridges – both locations offering views from aboard a boat. Four hours sail away in the port city of Marseille, the Olympic sailing events will see 330 competitors battle it out on the water. The Roucas-Blanc Marina, to be known as the Marseille Marina during the Paris Olympics, is usually a point of departure for boats, but has been suitably adapted to stage the large-scale competition. That includes the viability of a fan zone around the field of play that will allow thousands of spectators to watch the racing from the comfort of their yacht.

Likewise, a 193-nautical mile sail from Marseilles will bring guests to the port city of Barcelona, the 2024 host of the 37th America’s Cup. The event makes Barcelona the first venue in the world to host both an Olympic Games and an America’s Cup event. Teams from the United States, UK, Italy, Switzerland, and France will compete in the Louis Vuitton Cup Challenger Series in August to determine who goes through to the final round against the current title holder and Defender, Emirates Team New Zealand, in the America’s Cup Match in October.

With the average length of yacht charters stretching up to eight days, the need to make every day of an itinerary count is undeniable. After witnessing the America’s Cup victors

claim the trophy this year, guests can set sail from Barcelona to Marbella where the Andalusian city is set to host the 2024 Ironman in October. Flanked by the ocean and the mountains, Marbella is one of the most beautiful locations in Spain. It promises a dynamic course paired with a perfect climate and Mediterranean seafront promenade views.

The one-loop 1.2 miles (1.9 km) swim course in the Mediterranean Sea starts and finishes on the amazing Levante beach of Puerto Banús. It’s followed by a one-loop 56 miles (90 km) bike course that crosses from the famous “Gold Mile” through the city of Marbella and culminates with a three-loop 13 miles (21.1 km) run course that leads along the promenade, finishing by the sea.

From the French Riviera and Monaco to the Amalfi Coast and Balearics, the western Mediterranean yachting hotspots are synonymous with glitz and glamour. The Gulf’s Yachting Boom

With the UAE and Saudi Arabia ranking among the top 10 tourism destinations worldwide, yachting’s expansion into the Gulf marks a new era for the region.

Youneed only look to the increasing number of yachts visiting the Middle East to understand its growing popularity among the superyacht elite. According to the 2023 Superyacht Times Gulf Superyacht Market Report, 129 superyachts visited the region at least once in 2022, a 38% increase compared to 2021. In the first nine months of 2023, 140 superyachts were recorded in the area – not including the influx of superyachts for the Abu Dhabi Formula One Grand Prix – while 175 yachts are forecasted to visit in 2024. The Gulf region is more than catching the eye of the superyacht industry. Dubai has some of the biggest marina developments in the world and is a popular launch pad for yachts looking to travel further east to places like the Seychelles, Maldives, Indonesia, and Thailand.

“Having transformed from a small trading port to a global city, Dubai’s world-class maritime infrastructure, continued development of state-of-the-art facilities, strategic location between East and West and superb climate have contributed to the emirate becoming an international yacht tourism destination,” says His Excellency Issam Kazim, CEO of the Dubai Corporation for Tourism and Commerce Marketing.

In September 2023, IYC opened a new office in Dubai – its 15th worldwide – in partnership with Vision Investments Limited, a subsidiary of Al Ameeri Group Holding. “Our presence in the Middle East solidifies our position as a key player in the yachting industry and reflects the significance of the UAE's vibrant yacht market,” says Raphael Sauleau, CEO of IYC.

Nouman Al Hakim, Al Ameeri Group COO, adds: “Yachting is booming throughout the Middle East and all GCC countries. Demand continues to grow, and our partnership with IYC underpins our concerted efforts to focus on the maritime industry.”

A large proportion of superyachts in the Gulf – around 137 yachts over 98’ (30m) – are locally owned in the Middle East. The United Arab Emirates accounts for the largest number of superyachts owned in the region, with at least 136 yachts over 98’ (30m), while around 10% of 2023 new builds over 131’ (40m) are destined for Middle Eastern owners. Within brokerage, the second biggest used yacht sold in 2023 was the 351’ (107m) Benetti motor yacht LANA (since renamed MAR) which was sold in an off-market deal in February and is now based in Abu Dhabi.

Other factors, such as a wave of new wealth and exhilarating sporting events, are also drawing yacht builders, brokers, and suppliers to the region. In addition to the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the inaugural 2024 UIM E1 World Championship – the world’s first and only all-electric race boat championship – took place in February in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. With teams owned by some of the world’s biggest celebrities, such as Tom Brady, Rafael Nadal, and Marc Anthony, it pulled the world’s focus.

Both the Jeddah Grand Prix and the annual Dubai International Boat Show at Dubai Harbour provide excellent opportunities for owners looking to catch charters, says Dubai-based IYC Sales and Charter Consultant, Zoe Akritidou.

“The number of charter yachts built to European standards and coming to Dubai has increased,” she says. “The local preference is for day charters aboard 98’ (30m)+ yachts with onboard DJs, top cuisine and watersports. From an international perspective, it’s weekly charters that attend events like the Grand Prix, sail to Oman and cruise the Emirates coastline taking in key destinations, such as Ras Al Khaimah and Snoopy Island.”

Just an hour from Dubai International Airport, Ras Al Khaimah epitomizes the region’s charter offerings, pairing modern sophistication with a backdrop of the Hajar mountains and views of the Arabian Gulf. Signature yacht excur-

sions include hiking on the UAE’s highest mountain, Jebel Jais, before taking the world’s longest zipline back down, and guided kayaking among flamingos and herons in the surrounding mangroves. Guests can visit an Emirati pearl farm to learn the secrets of the ocean’s depths or go hot-air ballooning over the desert in search of indigenous wildlife.

“Both Dubai and Saudi Arabia are working hard to create new yachting destinations, such as opening pristine coral reefs for diving enthusiasts,” adds Akritidou.

In northwest Saudi Arabia on the wildlife-rich Red Sea, a maritime destination is being built from the ground up. Designed as a living laboratory where entrepreneurship will chart the course of a “new future”, NEOM is pitched as a destination home for people who dream big. It will include hyperconnected cognitive cities, ports, and enterprise zones. It’s pitched as a hub for business leaders and companies to research, incubate, and commercialize new technologies.

His Excellency Issam Kazim notes, “The Middle East has one of the world’s richest maritime landscapes and the region has made substantial investments to upgrade and modernise yachting facilities. The next decade will see the evolution of the recently launched Nakheel Marinas Dubai Islands and the ongoing conversion of Mina Rashid into a residential waterfront community. We also expect more marinas and other facilities in the near future plus anchorage points across the Dubai coastline.”

“Dubai’s appeal also extends beyond its beautiful marinas,” he adds, “with fine-dining restaurants, leading tourism attractions and diverse sea and land-based experiences available for visitors to enjoy, as well as open anchorage areas that are easily accessible from marinas. An exceptional quality of life, initiatives facilitating easy entry and robust air connectivity collectively establish the city as a preferred destination for yacht tourism.”

To date, Dubai Maritime City is the most equipped yachting facility in the region, however, the MB92 Group is one of several yachting companies to have announced a new facility in NEOM’s island destination of Sindalah. Located in the Saudi water of the Red Sea and due to open in 2024, Sindalah is scheduled to be the first physical showcase of NEOM and a gateway for the global yachting community. It reaffirms the Gulf’s commitment and capability to provide exceptional yachting services on a global scale.

Visit Sacred Sites

The small rocky island of Delos is considered one of the most sacred of all Greek islands, uninhabited to this day and declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in its entirety. Just 5km long, it is one of the smallest of the Cyclades and the Greek mythological birthplace of the twin gods Apollo and Artemis. Located just a few miles off the coast of Mykonos, it's an exclusive archaeological site swarming with monuments from the Archaic, Classical, and Hellenistic periods and once served as a religious pilgrimage for Ionians. An ancient amphitheater backed by sand dunes overlooks the modern port. The on-site museum has one of the finest collections of ancient Greek sculpture. Be sure to walk the marble splendor of the Terrace of the Lions and soak up the spirit of Delos.

Wander Medieval Towns

Leaving Delos to set sail for Naxos, you will discover Venetian castles and towers that loom large among historical landmarks and Greek monuments. Meander through the tight alleyways of the old walled medieval town where a 13th-century castle sits proudly on elevated ground, overlooking the harbor. Further south, the Temple of Dimitra, made entirely from Naxos marble, was a shrine to the goddess of the harvest. Make time to stop at nearby Sangri Village, the capital and main port of Naxos, where white-washed Cycladic architecture is mixed with Neoclassical buildings. The Portara – or Great Door – is a monolithic marble frame built using four 20-tonne marble blocks. Discover Archaeological Finds

On the western side of Naxos is the port of Ios. Here, you can discover the Bronze Age settlement of Skarkos. One of the Cyclades' most prized archaeological sites, its circular shape and high altitude gave residents an elevated view across the port and out to sea. Archaeological digs revealed a modern way of life, where two-story buildings with stone-paved floors, drainage systems, and cemeteries shone a light on a sophisticated civilization.

Retrace Footsteps

Enjoy the calm ambiance of the small island of Despotiko, which had remained uninhabited since the 17th century when all residents were killed by pirates. Today, you can retrace the footsteps of Roman, Venetian, and Ottoman

occupations. The island also houses ancient cemeteries, the last remains of a sanctuary of Apollo – one of 22 island shrines outside of Delos that were dedicated to God – built by the ancient Greeks.

Marvel at Temples

The island of Aegina is home to the Temple of Aphaia –goddess of heroic endeavor – and is the island's jewel. It's the only surviving limestone temple out of three built initially and is thought to have served as a prototype for the design of the Parthenon in Athens. Adorned in Parian marble sculptures depicting scenes from the Trojan War, it's also thought to form an imaginary isosceles triangle with the Parthenon and the Temple of Sounion. On clear days, a direct line of sight between the three temples provided a secret way for ancient Greeks to communicate with one another when under attack.

The America’s Cup: Challengers and Charters

The 37th America’s Cup heads to Barcelona for 2024, promising world-class sailing in a cosmopolitan city with Mediterranean cruising grounds on its doorstep.

The most prestigious, certainly the oldest and the most exciting international sailing competition in the global sports calendar is heading to Barcelona for the first time this year. The city that once turned its back on the sea is hosting the 37th America’s Cup – where there is no second place –at superyacht facility, Marina Port Vell. It’s a fitting host city for a competition whose origins lie in gentlemen’s desire to prove their yacht’s capabilities.

The first recorded America’s Cup race took place in 1851. The RYS £100 Cup (informally known as the Auld Mug) was waged for a race between the New York Yacht Club's (NYYC) newly commissioned America and 15 yachts of the Royal Yacht Squadron around the Isle of Wight, England. AMERICA, a 98’ (30m) schooner, was the product of a wager when George Shuyler (one of six founders of the NYYC) was challenged by East Coast boatbuilder William Brown to create a boat “faster than any vessel in the United States brought to compete with her” for the sum of $30,000.

True to form, AMERICA was radical, with a refined rigging arrangement, smaller sail area, and sleeker form than other yachts of her era. A total of 18 yachts entered the first Cup but only 15 made it to the starting line. Despite a slow start and amid some long-standing racing controversy, America’s cotton flat-cut sails laced to the spars and superior hull form saw her quickly pull through the fleet to victory.

Tradition dictates that America's Cup match races are held between two sailing yachts – the defender, the yacht club that currently holds the trophy, and the challenger, the yacht club that is challenging for the cup. This August, teams from the United States, UK, Italy, Switzerland, and France will compete in the Louis Vuitton Cup Challenger Series to determine who goes through to the final round against the current title holder and Defender, Emirates Team New Zealand, in the America’s Cup Match in October.

Technological innovation, sustainability, and high performance sit at the heart of the event, and this year will see the teams race again in fully foiling AC75 monohulls. A string of outstanding venues bid to be the host, but it was Marina Port Vell’s “technical infrastructure, unique security, world-class facilities, and unbeatable location next to the regatta course” that won out, says the Marina's Marketing and Communications Director, Marta Tuñi. It makes Barcelona the first venue in the world to host both an Olympic Games and an America’s Cup event.

“When thinking ahead to the 37th America’s Cup and the AC75s racing within a few hundred meters of the Barcelona beach, waterfront, and race village, it will be nothing less than spectacular,” says Emirates Team New Zealand CEO Grant Dalton.

The city’s average wind range of 9-15 knots during the September and October race window also makes Marina Port Vell – a partner of IYC – the optimal choice, while its agreement with triple Michelin-starred chefs and brothers,

Hermanos Torres, will offer a unique dining experience during the regatta period. More significantly, Port Vell’s recently completed €20 million two-year development includes 23 new berths for yachts up to 230’ (70m), an innovative landscaping project, and the creation of a new bunkering system. Alongside the classic J Class yachts competing in World Championships in October, an estimated 150 superyachts are expected to drop anchor throughout the race period, one of which is IYC’s popular charter vessel, 180’ (55m) MOSKITO (for charter, page 79).

“Chartering a yacht at the America’s Cup provides the most ideal platform right at the edge of the race course from which to view the yachts whizzing past and to entertain guests and clients, with top-end service and a private chef,” says MOSKITO Captain, Ian Robertson, who attended the America’s Cup in Bermuda with 164’ (50m) JO. “Having a specialist race expert on board who can provide commentary on tactics and maneuvers, paired with live streaming, only adds to the experience.”

While the land-locked waters of Bermuda provided perfect race conditions, Barcelona’s open water setting combines an exhilarating sailing square with international accessibility, says IYC Charter Consultant, Carrie Freeman: “Barcelona is an exciting proposition from a charter perspective, not least because of its easy accessibility from major airports and world-class marina facilities, but also the number of yachts that will be available to charter for the Cup.”

In 2024, Barcelona boasts not just an extraordinary gateway to the America's Cup, offering a spectacular introduction to the world of elite yachting, but also the convenience of the start and/or end of a luxurious yacht charter. Already a renowned hub for superyachts in the Mediterranean, Barcelona and the Costa Brava welcome with golden beaches, medieval villages, and fishing towns, while the popular cruising grounds of the Balearics are just a day’s sail away.

Superyacht management services help owners to maximize their enjoyment, protect their asset, and secure successful charter programs that can bring a return on their investment.

While private ownership needs vary greatly from charter requirements, there is an overlap between the two. So, how do IYC’s yacht management and charter management teams work together to support owners?

“It’s all about communication,” says Anna Granlund, IYC’s Head of Charter Management in Monaco. “We work as a team to keep everyone informed, from the operations management to the Captain and the owners.”

Charter programs require stability. That includes the support that yacht management brings, as well as the personalized assistance that individual yacht managers give to the vessel, Granlund adds. “As a company, we’re involved in every step, but it’s the yacht managers that advise owners on the importance of crew retention and crew welfare, such as offering rotational positions. Many of our successful charter programs have rotational crew, which I market as a real positive.”

“Crew retention is one of the biggest problems that we have on charter yachts,” says Richard Goche, captain of 162’ (49m) Mondomarine OCEANOS (for charter, page

95). “Both owners and charter clients like to see the same faces each time they return. It also helps to get the boat ready for charter when the crew know what they’re doing and work together.”

OCEANOS joined IYC’s charter management fleet in September 2023, following a round of technical and engineering updates carried out by the owner. “OCEANOS is our first yacht, though we’ve had smaller boats in the past,” says her owner. “We've chartered yachts a few times, but this is our first experience of having a crew of 11 and everything that comes with that.”

Granlund also cites flexible cabin configurations that flip between a twin or double, an updated interior (not necessarily refit but refreshed), and a good collection of the latest toys as must-haves for successful charter programs. Frankie Maxwell, US Sales and Charter Director at IYC, agrees: “A crucial factor in a successful charter program is ensuring that the crew cabins are comfortable and that guest cabin configurations can be arranged to accommodate different types of parties. Fixed single bunks in staterooms can be a deal-breaker for clients.”

For the owners of OCEANOS, it was the yacht’s myriad socializing areas, seven cabin configuration, and master that can be closed off from the rest of the yacht to create a private sitting room, bedroom and outside deck, that caught their eye. “The space and layout combined everything that we liked most about the boats that we’d chartered,” says the owner.

The layout remained untouched during OCEANOS’ 2022 refit – “the hot tub, the dining areas, even toy storage are in the same place as when we bought it,” – only the “functioning parts” were refurbished, alongside the addition of stabilizers.

“IYC has people who are in charge of every different aspect, whether it's crew recruitment, chartering to guests or the maintenance of the boat,” she says. “It’s been a learning curve for us as owners, but IYC has opened our eyes to how a yacht should be run for the benefit of guests, crew and owners. They’re on top of everything.”

“From a Captain’s perspective, the administrative support that we receive from IYC’s yacht management team makes a big difference as we don't have time to do it on board,” says Captain Goche. “We use BLUE for organizing documents, managing crew, running the boat and, as of January 2024, financial management.”

With several layers of intelligence, IYC’s in-house software

BLUE – a virtual yacht management system – automates administrative tasks, such as bookkeeping, recruitment and technical support in the blink of an eye. Popular with Captains and owners, it increases efficiency, is straightforward to use (with an app for on-the-go use), and ensures compliance.

BLUE has helped to streamline OCEANOS’ onboard setup. As of last summer, the yacht is IYC’s best-booked yacht in

the Mediterranean, securing 96 days of charter throughout Spain, France and Italy. “It comes down to the professional and charter-friendly attitude of the crew, all the different features and upgrades the owners have added – including gym equipment, eco-friendly exhaust scrubbers for the generators, and an air purification system – not to mention the great condition of the boat,” says Granlund.

It's a similar story for both BLACK LION (for charter, page 142), a highly well-maintained 101’ (30m) performance Perini Navi, and 181’ (55m) Admiral GECO (for charter, page 72), one of the most impressive motor yachts in IYC’s Greek charter management fleet. Both underwent sizable maintenance works in the past year under the stewardship of IYC yacht management and, together with IYC charter management, have incredible charter records.

“BLACK LION had a very successful 2022-23 season with back-to-back charters in the Aegean from May to October, and now more than a month of charters booked for the 2024 summer season,” says Alexis Tsolakis, IYC’s Yacht Management Client Relations within the Greek yacht management team. “And perhaps the best attestation of how meticu-

lous GECO’s maintenance and upkeep have been since first launched is the fact she is one of the most successful charter yachts in the IYC fleet.”

It's a fine example of how when yacht and charter management work in unison for the good of the yacht, owner and crew, the results are exceptional all around.

164' (50m)+: A Comprehensive Guide

From high-end superyachts to adventurous explorers, and elegant sailing vessels, the 164' (50m)+ market segment is playing a pivotal role in reshaping the industry landscape. IYC's expert Sales Consultants share their insights to help you make informed decisions.

IYC continues to sell more 164’ (50m)+ yachts each year. Furthermore, yachts being sold within this size category are considerably newer than pre-pandemic years. The average age of a 164’ (50m)+ yacht sold before 2020 was 15.5 years.

Within the past three years, that figure has dropped to nine, indicating a notable shift towards newer vessels.

“Owners are increasingly ordering larger yachts, with 154’ (50m) now considered fairly small,” says Frankie Maxwell, US Sales and Charter Director at IYC. “With 98' (30m) identified as the new benchmark for first-time yacht owners, we estimate that a higher demand for 164’-197’ (50-60m) yachts will occur within the next five years.”

Within brokerage, the pendulum has already swung, says IYC Managing Partner California and Sales Consultant, Matt Stone. “We're now in a buyer's market for 131’ (40m)+ yachts,” he says, citing 181’ (55m) Benetti NEXT CHAPTER and 164’ (50m) Westport HOSPITALITY as solid examples. “There's quality inventory coming to market that's offered in line with pre-pandemic conditions.”

Within new construction, it’s a similar story. “We've seen an unprecedented number of new contracts signed in the past two years, yet limited build slots until 2028 are driving shipyards to develop pre-engineered concepts to reduce the design phase and offer shortened delivery times. This includes Benetti, which has a 262’ (80m) concept in the pipeline."

IYC, acting as brand ambassadors of the Italian Sea Group, successfully signed three 230’ (70m)+ projects in 2023, followed by three motor yachts with IYC partners Cantiere Delle Marche, two of which were signed in January 2024. While explorers are regarded as the sherpas of the sea, once any category of yacht exceeds 230’ (70m), owners spend longer aboard.

“This is typically between four to eight weeks, though a few choose to live aboard,” says IYC Managing Partner Monaco, Kevin Bonnie. “The yacht becomes a home from home, and every convenience required for a modern lifestyle needs to

be catered for, from business centers to multiple galleys.”

Opting for a larger sailing yacht not only offers notable enhancements in stability and onboard social spaces but also increases the distance and speed that owners can undertake, says IYC Charter Consultant, Alice Newnham. “A 164’ (50m)+ yacht also lends itself to increases in comfort during prolonged legs and can accommodate deck cranes, meaning they can hold more powerful toys,” she says.

MOTOR YACHTS

While speed, range, and draft remain important considerations for motor yacht owners, the extra space aboard 164’ (50m)+ vessels allows for open layouts, larger beach clubs with swim platforms, and fold-out balconies at water level. Larger exterior decks mean more room for hot tubs and fullsize swimming pools, as found on 187’ (57m) LIBERTY (for sale, page 192). There are also more outdoor entertainment options; some of which convert to touch-and-go helipads like on 240’ (73m) LAUREL (for sale and for charter, page 184). The increase in internal volume allows for grand guest suites, with lavish ensuites, walk-in wardrobes and, in some cases, dedicated owner decks.

“In the larger size ranges, it becomes less about length and more about gross tonnage,” says Richard Gray, IYC’s Head of Sales UK. “That’s the key differentiator between a 164’ (50m) and a 492’ (150m) with notable variances in guest space, number of toys, and grander wellness facilities and amenities.”

Yachts that are upwards of 164’-197’ (50-60m) are also in a sweet spot for owners wanting a more lucrative weekly charter rate, says Matt Stone: “You're able to run a leaner program in terms of annual operating costs while still getting a higher weekly charter rate.”

Spacious socializing is another bonus, says Frankie Maxwell, US Sales and Charter Director at IYC, with sky lounges and winter gardens providing a flexible open-plan layout.

EXPLORERS

Undeniably, recent years have seen a shift in clients’ taste to lasting experiences that frequently challenge the boundaries of the conventional superyacht. The benefits of owning a versatile, self-sufficient yacht perhaps became amplified in the face of travel restrictions and the closure of social attractions on land for some, and their masculine lines and extended ranges appealed to others seeking longer, meaningful trips to lesser-touched areas.

IYC Managing Partners in Monaco, Mathilde de Roffignac and Kevin Bonnie, spent eight years on an owner’s tender process for a 367’ (112m) 7,000 GT private expedition yacht. Among the advantages of owning an explorer yacht, they highlight the freedom to circumnavigate the globe, to venture to places no one else has, and the chance to be involved with scientific research operations. Therefore, having enough redundancy to be autonomous in remote regions where there is little yachting infrastructure is a prerequisite.

“Explorer yachts pair Range Rover capability with Bentley quality,” says de Roffignac. That includes carrying spare parts to carry out repairs at sea, capable crew trained in various fields of expertise, from ice pilots and engineers to wildlife guides and advanced divers, and anything linked to remote logistics, such as waste disposal.

A true explorer requires at least a 5,000-7,000 nautical mile range, extra-large cold and fresh stores to sustain guests for weeks at sea, and onboard climatization that can cope with both warm and cold climates, adds Gray: “If the boat was built as a dedicated explorer, some form of Polar capability is also a consideration, along with full displacement for guest comfort, yet even the smallest 164’ (50m)+ explorers, such as those being built by Cantiere Delle Marche, can achieve 7,500 nautical miles at 10 knots cruising speed.”

Features present on yachts like LAUREL and ATOMIC (for sale, page 188), adds IYC Sales Consultant, Mark Elliott, including vast garage spaces tailored to accommodate a myriad of toys and equipment as well as an all-out dive center like that found on the latter, “extend the appeal of these vessels beyond their luxurious interiors and cuttingedge engineering, enabling owners and guests to venture further into uncharted territories, epitomizing the spirit of adventure that defines the explorer yachting lifestyle.”

On sailing yachts over 262’ (80m), the bulwarks are higher, which allows for beach clubs and fold-down transoms, excellent amenities and guest service (1:1 crew to guest ratio), as well as greater displacement delivering guest comfort.

SAILING YACHTS

Sustainability is the biggest advantage of any sailing yacht; less reliance on fossil fuel consumption and the freedom to go where the wind takes you. Within the 164’ (50m)+ category, performance and number of crew are crucial differentiators, especially for owners looking to race on the regatta circuit.

Like motor yachts, larger size equates to more guest space. On yachts over 262’ (80m), the bulwarks are higher, which allows for beach clubs and fold-down transoms, excellent amenities and guest service (1:1 crew to guest ratio), as well as greater displacement delivering guest comfort. The biggest limiting factor of an 262’ (80m)+, however, is the number of crew required to sail it, not to mention tall masts and deep keels.

“The size of yacht that a client chooses comes down to their budget and preferred style of sailing,” says Swaine. “If an owner is looking for a high performance, luxurious sailing yacht to go around the world in, then it’s likely to be 45 to 50m and above.”

For Ilia Riga, owner of 164’ (50m) Perini Navi ALMYRA II, it was the open plan layout and connection to the water that caught her eye. “It has huge external aft areas and a generous interior that feels intimate and cozy,” she says.

As a motor sailer, ALMYRA II offers the best of both worlds – not dependent on fuel, yet with the fuel capacity for transatlantic crossings. Refitted with a new carbon mast and sails that fit under the Panama Bridge, the yacht’s steel reinforcements make world circumnavigating easy. “We are in love with this boat, and everything that her size and layout offer,” she says.

CLASSIC YACHTS AND SUPPORT VESSELS

The biggest consideration for any classic yacht, regardless of size, is maintenance, says IYC Sales Consultant Jamie Swaine. That includes the space and accessibility for the crew to service machinery during its design and build, not to mention regular upkeep.

“Timber takes a considerable amount of varnishing, while the deterioration on a 70-year-old aluminum or steel yacht can be significant,” he explains. “If you're buying a classic boat as an investment, you can’t go wild with a refit as you need to think about resale. Preserving original features helps maintain a yacht’s value.”

In contrast, the rise of the support vessel – a boat that shadows the mothership (motor or sail) and serves as extra storage –came about due to owners’ wishing to maintain as much guest space on board their primary yachts as possible, says Gray: “When given the choice of an aft deck taken up with tenders and toys or a luxurious beach club, the decision is easy.”

While most support vessels accompany 262’ (80m)+ yachts, there are yachts in the 197’ (60m) range that have a support vessel of a similar size (148’-240’ / 45m-70m). Carrying every toy imaginable, from helicopters and submarines to cars and sailing boats, support vessels provide an excess of storage. That includes additional accommodation for crew and specialist staff, but also more guest cabins. “Unless the

yacht is classified PYC, the maximum number of guests is around 12, so to have more guest accommodation on a support vessel is a game changer,” says de Roffignac. “They need to be fast, too, to be able to go ahead of the mothership and set up in advance or clear up once the mothership has departed and not be left behind.”

There’s also more room to accommodate a large commercially rated heli deck, making it easier and safer to operate within regulations. “The outgoings from operating two boats are significant, but they’re outweighed by the considerable gains,” says Gray.
