HOW TO CHARTER A YACHT
P
lanning your own luxury private yacht trip might seem complicated or intimidating. Worry not! For this exact reason, with only one phone call our professional charter consultants are available to help you select the right yacht, plan your itinerary and help arrange all logistics before, during and after your trip. Our aim is to make this process seamless and ensure you have the best experience.
SELECT YOUR DATES When planning your trip, let your charter consultant know the specific dates that you are looking to book your vacation. We recommend that you make your reservations in advance and that you have a few different dates in mind to ensure availability. You should keep into consideration that holidays and “event periods are usually in high demand and are often booked several months in advance. Certain yachts may require a 10 day minimum charter during these busy periods.
CHOOSE YOUR DESTINATION Let your charter consultant know the locations that you would like to visit. The Caribbean and the Bahamas are the most popular winter destinations, with a high season from December through April, but you may also enjoy visiting the South Pacific, Southeast Asia or the Indian Ocean. The Mediterranean is also a good choice for the fall or spring months. Yachts in this magazine are categorized per destination, but most yachts are available for charter in the wider area. The speed of your yacht, weather conditions and availability in a particular marina are all factors that will determine the specific locations and number of ports you can visit during your trip. Entering certain countries may be restricted by the yacht flag or its size. Also, make sure that you have the appropriate visa permits to enter the countries you intend to visit.

Caribbean British Virgin Islands W
ith its gleaming white sand beaches and shimmering azure waters, verdant rainforest and year-round sunshine the British Virgin Islands (BVI) are a yachting paradise with something to delight explorers of all ages. Whether this is your first yacht charter, or you are one of the many returning visitors to the islands, your charter to the BVI will be an unforgettable experience.
TORTOLA, BVI
A
rrive at Beef Island Airport on Tortola, an island discovered by Christopher Columbus in the late 1400s. Before rushing off, you might visit Trellis Bay, a quaint collection of shops, galleries and bars that provides a welcoming experience for newcomers to the BVI. Your yacht will take you to White Bay on Guana Island, a secluded anchorage with several snorkeling options, although going ashore is prohibited. If you enjoy aquatic life, ask the captain use the underwater lights and watch the huge tarpon feed in the evening. If you are an avid hiker, you can undertake a challenging hike through the rainforest up Sage Mountain, an ideal spot for bird watching, or gazing out over Tortola and the nearby islands.
MARINA CAY, BVI
After leaving White Bay, pass by the small island of Great Camanoe to visit Norman Island. It is an easy trip of a few hours, with ample choice for spots to enjoy a delicious lunch on a white sandy beach. Make the most of the warm waters with a swim and some diving in the beautiful settings of Pelican Island and the Indians. Close to the south drop, keen fisherman can all enjoy some fishing time and fresh catch for dinner. Located inside beautiful Sprat Bray is the Peter Island Resort and Spa, the ideal location for some pampering onshore. Enjoy a leisurely walk along the beach to one of the Island’s five white-sand HORIZONS / 10

beaches. Divers might want to take advantage of the nearby wreck of the RMS Rhone. Enjoy authentic Caribbean food for dinner at one of the Island’s excellent restaurants. Virgin Gorda is the third largest island in the BVI. Head towards the striking landmark The Baths, which is a unique grouping of boulders along the water that will make for an unforgettable memory. Following the boulders will lead you to a bar and restaurant complete with undisturbed views across the ocean. Anchor overnight in the tranquility of the North Sound where you will be spoilt for choice on where to
go ashore. Your choices include the well-known Yacht Club Smeralda, Oil Nut Bay and the Biras Creek Resort, with many activities to offer including a pampering session at a world class spa or another delicious meal. Make the most of your time in the North Sound – a huge protected body of water. There are plenty of options for on-shore activities and entertainment, including half a dozen bars and restaurants that are all accessible by tender. The world famous Bitter Yacht Club is always a favorite. Jost Van Dyke is the smallest of the islands in the BVI. Although
there are only 25 permanent residents, it is one of the liveliest of the islands. With five restaurants in Great Harbour alone, you can be sure of a great lobster dinner. The welcoming atmosphere of Foxy’s Tamarind Beach Bar has persisted for generations of rum-punch lovers and reggae singers. Anchor up at the Great Habour or dock up at the well known restaurant Foxy’s Taboo. More incredible diving spots are close by, especially on Mercurius Rock, located between Tobago Island and Jost Van Dyke. Ask your crew to prepare a picnic to take ashore and enjoy it on the white sands of one of the countless beaches. IYC.COM / 11

CUBA: THE NEXT EXCITING DESTINATION Yacht owners and charter guests are always on the hunt for the next exciting destination to visit and Cuba is fast becoming a must-do.
“People want to have different experiences, they want a change from the same old places, and I think the next destination buzzword will be Cuba,” says Mark Elliott, Sales and Charter Consultant at IYC. Several yachts in the IYC fleet have already enjoyed successful trips to the island and it is on the radar of many others, especially as previous restrictions of visiting ease up. “Cuba is on our list of places to visit and it is just a matter of when, not if, we go,” says the owner of 46.9m (153’) BG, who is hoping to visit this winter. Located just 145 km of the US coast, Cuba is the largest of the Caribbean islands. Having had little outside access over the past 50 years, the island has evolved at its own pace and has a vibrant atmosphere, rich with its own unique culture. Many have fallen under Cuba’s spell, such as writer Ernest Hemingway who wrote novels including The Old Man And The Sea while living there.
“People want to have different experiences, they want a change from the same old places, and I think the next destination buzzword will be Cuba,”
The island is home to more than 300 beaches with clear inviting waters. Limestone mountains and lush greenery complete the picture perfect setting of this very unique Caribbean island. Peak season runs from November to March and with sunshine 330 days of the year blue skies are almost guaranteed during a visit. With little existing luxury infrastructure a superyacht is the perfect way to see the country in style and comfort. A varied itinerary will take guests all around the island, from the colorful capital Havana to the stretching white sand of Varadero beach. IYC charter yacht 44.6m (146’) Lady L recently paid a visit to Cuba. “It really is an experience,” says Captain Martin Andersson. “I am very happy that we saw Cuba when we did as I think it will get more and more popular as a destination as it comes on the radar of more people.” The guests of Lady L loved the island’s personality and particularly enjoyed shore excursions including visits to Havana and a tour of one of the cigar factories, where visitors can see the intricate production process of the world famous handcrafted Cuban cigars. Captain Andersson recommends anchoring off Punta Frances Marine National Park before continuing to the small Cayo Largo island, which was a trip highlight. Although very poor, Cubans approach life with gusto and you will hear music playing on every street. Classic cars fill the streets, all of them dating to pre-1959, and colourful buildings are a visual delight. Trinidad is a particularly striking city and was named a world heritage site by UNESCO in 1988. Capital Havana is also a must-see and is known for having the best examples of Spanish colonial architecture. “Enjoy a one of a kind dinner at the Paladar La Guardia, an icon of Havana, or take a stroll down the unique Malécon esplanade and absorb the Cuban atmosphere,” recommends LeAnn Pliske, IYC Charter Consultant. Cuba is the birthplace of dance styles including the Mambo and Cha Cha and unsurprisingly dancing is a hugely popular pastime. Come ashore for some Cuban Salsa lessons and dance the night away at the Casa de la Musica, cooling yourself down with a Havana Club Mojito with fresh organic lime. Back on the water Cuba also offers a multitude of diving and snorkeling sites, unparalleled in the Caribbean, with beautiful reefs and waters alive with sea life. “Cuba has designated many coastal areas as Marine Reserves and the underwater environment is incredibly diverse,” says LeAnn. “On the Southern coast the area of Jardines de la Reina is one of the world’s largest marine preserves, with over 250 virgin coral and mangrove islets.” The Western tip of Cuba, Maria La Gorda, is also particularly special for diving.

Bahamas The Abacos
W
ith over 700 colourful islands and innumerable tiny cays, home to breath-taking beaches and convivial towns, deep caves and verdant gullies, the sun-baked Bahamas greet its visitors with a cornucopia of delights for all ages. With sheltered waters and schools of tropical fish shimmering beneath the surface, this is a divers’ and snorkelers’ paradise. The reef-and-key sheltered waters on The Sea of Abaco give travellers over one hundred miles of calm cruising in relatively shallow seas, making the Abacos Islands one of the word’s top boating destinations. With quaint colonial towns, two golf courses, miles and miles of Stellar Beach, great fishing and diving, and a wonderful selection of restaurants and bars, the Abacos are the most complete vacation destination in the Bahamas Out Islands.

ABACO, BAHAMAS
T
he Abacos consists of its own 120-mile-long island chain and is a yachting paradise. Great Abaco and Little Abaco serve as the “mainland,” with a string of barrier islands separating them from the Atlantic. The calm and shallow body of water in between is called the Sea of Abaco. A good place to begin your charter is at Great Abaco Island, home to Marsh Harbour, the “bright lights and big city” of the Out Islands. Great Abaco is known for having exactly one traffic light, the only operative one in the in the area. You will meet your yacht at one of the full-service marinas. Take some time to explore the island’s selection of great restaurants and bars or venture to one of the historical plantation houses or rum distilleries. North of Marsh Harbour is Treasure Cay, a hotel, golf, marina HORIZONS / 40
and real estate development wrapped around a beach with the whitest, softest sand you have ever seen. To the south lies Little Harbour, a picturesque protected bay where you will find a small artist colony. Pete’s Pub and Gallery is the ideal location for combining a delicious meal with a unique shopping experience at the gallery, featuring work of the owner Peter Johnston and other artists. Make your way towards the Cays of Abaco with its clutch of striking colonial towns. Settled by English colonists right after the American Revolution, Hope Town on Elbow Cay and New Plymouth on Green Turtle Cay beautifully amalgamate elements of a New England fishing town with the distinctive Bahamian touch of pastel colors. Hope Town is home to the famous candy striped lighthouse
built in 1863 by the British Imperial Lighthouse Service. A popular landmark today, this establishment was once a source of controversy, as local residents had been making a comfortable living by salvaging ships that wrecked on the offshore reefs and were opposed to its construction. North of Elbow Cay you will find Man-O-War; this is another loyalist settlement and the Abacos’ boat-building center with a wonderful, naturally protected harbor as well as several picturesque boat fitting and sail shops. Next on the list is Great Guana Cay. Nipper’s Beach Bar & Grill, which sits atop the island’s tall sand dune, is known for its Sunday barbecues. Enjoy a delicious burger while admiring the stunning view of Guana’s magnificent seven-mile-long beach. While anchored at Great Guana take the opportunity
to visit the outer islands, easily reached by tender or the Abacos ferry service from Marsh Harbour. For avid divers and snorkelers the Abacos is a paradise, with several protected underwater areas. Fowl Cay National Reserve and Pelican Cay National Park are ideal diving spots featuring massive reefs with swim-through caves that are seasonally filled wall to wall with silver baitfish. If you make it to the edge of the reef you are almost guaranteed to see Caribbean reef sharks. Fishing is also huge in the Abacos. Cherokee Sound and the “marls” are exceptional spots for bonefishing. The Atlantic side, within easy sight of the outer islands, is the ideal location if you are looking to catch blue water big game species, such as marlin and tuna. IYC.COM / 41

TOP REASONS TO CHARTER A YACHT THIS WINTER
A
s the colder days of winter draw closer there is never a better time to start planning an escape with your own private charter. Get inspired by our top reasons why a winter charter is a “must do”.
EXPLORE EXOTIC DESTINATIONS Providing the perfect lure, the Caribbean and the Bahamas are the most popular destination for winter cruising, with the peak season from November through July. Home to thousands of islands, each with their own personality, azure blue waters, soft white sand and a relaxed shoreside vibe, they provide the perfect antidote for the winter blues. Traditional hotspots such as Gustavia on St Barths are enduringly popular, and for good reason, but why not look further afield to some of the less visited areas? A visit to the Hawksbill turtle sanctuary on Bequia, in St Vincent and the Grenadines, or spending time exploring the Rosaria Islands archipelago, a national park that shelters dolphins and seals, are just two activities to try. Onshore there is plenty going on, including carnivals and the Junkanoo New Year celebration in the Bahamas. Your experienced crew will know all the best local places to visit.
GIVE YOURSELF A HEALTH BOOST Catching a cold is inevitable in the winter. If you need another excuse to escape on holiday it is well known that sunshine has health benefits. A dose of vitamin D is not just good for your body, helping to protect against colds, but studies have shown that sunshine reduces stress, puts us in a better mood and improves our sleep patterns. THE LATEST IN ON BOARD TOYS AND TENDERS
O
n-water activities are one of the biggest sources of fun for superyacht guests, with many yachts carrying an exciting range of toys and tenders for their guest’s enjoyment. Ensuring a garage packed full of everything from sailing dinghy’s and sea biscuits to diving gear, paddle boards and more can be the secret to charter success and an added bonus to complement the luxury onboard experience and stunning surroundings.
The list of what are the on board must haves is always growing, with new and exciting models frequently launching. “Some of the hottest, latest toys we have been supplying to yachts include the Gibbs QuadSki, eco-friendly dissolving golf balls, and electric powered Stand Up Paddle Boards,” says Ally Ford of specialist company Superyacht Toys and Tenders. The QuadSki combines a quad bike with jet-ski, allowing guests to effortlessly get to land from the sea and traverse their surroundings. Ecobioballs allow superyacht guests who enjoy golf to hit shots off their yacht’s deck without any worry of environmental impact; on hitting the water the balls dissolve into fish food. Stand Up Paddle Boards have long been popular on board yachts as a means to explore a mooring or simply for exercise, but the Powerboards’ electric powered board gives extra range and support for longer-range adventures or choppier conditions. One popular charter yacht that sees the importance of a full complement of toys is 50m Trending, which upgraded all her onboard toys and tenders for the 2016 season. The yacht is particularly set up for family enjoyment with plenty to keep children occupied including towable tubes, an inflatable stern swimming pool for safe swimming, and child friendly water skis and underwater scooters. Of its three tenders one – a 37ft Boston Whaler – is fully set up for deep sea fishing and day trips. La Dea II also carries a full beach party set up, including awnings and beach toys, with guests able to opt to get to shore using glass bottomed kayaks that open up the underwater world beneath them. On board slides have proved to be an enduring favourite with guests and 39.6m M/Y Milk Money carries a spectacular full size water slide, running from deck to water line, allowing her guests to enter crystal waters in the most exhilarating fashion. 50m M/Y La Dea II, currently undergoing a world circumnavigation, has a custom Humber tender with full fishing set up and several exciting toys including a Phantom drone for unique in the air footage. 41m M/Y Polly has a beautiful indoor-outdoor flow, designed to maximise guest’s time in beautiful surroundings, and this love of the outdoors extends to her toy inventory which includes a powered wave jet board, Seabobs and a speedy Contender Sport tender for exploring all the sites and surroundings of new anchorages. With superyachts now more set up for fun on the water than ever, guests are often spoilt for choice on which activity to pick. But, with such a diverse range of yachts on offer, there is something for everybody no matter what their favourite on-water activity.

outhwest of Sri Lanka in the Indian Ocean lie 1,190 islands, lush with tropical elements; this archipelago is known as the Maldives. The Republic of Maldives is a cultural melting pot due to its history and location. Barely noticeable on a world map, the splattering of its islands and atolls cover a 90,000 square km region in between India, Southwest Asia, and East Africa. The Maldives are quite simply spectacular, with coconut palms arching gracefully above gin-clear lagoons, coral reefs that are ripe for snorkelers and divers, tropical scenery and mild weather with endless sunshine. The atolls, or ring-shaped coral reefs, that are found between the islands create faultless wave breaks, where surf fanatics can “ride the perfect wave”. CREATING THE PERFECT CHARTER EXPERIENCE
W
hen planning the perfect charter it is the crew who help to take a trip above and beyond. On many of the leading charter yachts the crew is handpicked to ensure
that every single member of the team is passionate about creating the ultimate luxury experience for guests. “We have a crew that truly want to do the best they possibly can, they love what they do and they want to make the guests happy,” says Captain Martin Andersson of 44.6m (146’) Lady L. “We try to put a personal twist on the service and always focus on the details that make the difference.” The crew of 62m (203’) Sealyon also understands that it is the sum of the parts that make a trip. “Sealyon’s crew works hard to customise trips to charterers needs and likes, offering personalisation for each of our charter groups” says Captain Chris Lee of Sealyon. “This encompasses itineraries, activities, cuisine, sea state, calm anchorages and creating an unforgettable safe experience.” Creating the ideal on board setting is always a goal for the crew of Lady L. “We make the most of every space on board so guests can enjoy a variety of settings and we will always try and find the perfect anchorage for guests to enjoy the sunset during dinner” says Captain Andersson. “We seek out special places, each with their own unique feel, and use our local knowledge to help guests make the most of each destination.” Filling each day with memorable events is another way to make a charter special “Beach setups are our speciality,” says Captain Lee whose crew seek out stunning bays before going ahead to create the perfect setup, whether for family time at the beach or a romantic meal for two. “One cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well,” wrote Virginia Woolf, and for many people the dining table is a place to come together, and share the day’s thoughts and adventures. On a superyacht, exquisite food forms the heart of any charter experience and creating a custom menu is top of the list for creating a memorable trip. “Our chef is amazing with a very adaptable style and he creates exceptional bespoke menus to suit the guests,” says Captain Roy Hodges of Match Point. “All of our guests leave remembering the food as a key part of their charter experience.” The crew of Match Point especially enjoy basing a charter around particular events. “We create a really special set up on board, from cocktail evenings to themed menus so our guests will never forget their trip,” says Hodges. The crew of Lady L takes the same approach, dreaming up different themes to suit any occasion. Recent on board events have included birthday parties themed around favourite sports teams, with the main salon transformed to complement the theme and a menu to match. For family-focused charters having a crew that is used to hosting younger guests can make a real difference, allowing the adults time to relax. “Our chef sometimes does cooking courses for the children which always proves popular,” says Andersson. “Time on the water is always sought-after and we also think of lots of activities for the children to do.” Enjoying watersports is also incredibly popular with Sealyon’s guests, with a wide range of water toys on offer. “Watersports are our speciality, catering to all tastes and ages,” says Captain Lee. “Our crew are experienced to handle all types of water sports, including diving for certified divers, sailing, paddle boarding, kayaking, snorkelling, water ski-ing to name a few.” No matter what guests are after, every IYC charter crew will have the creativity and passion that ensures an unforgettable holiday, full of memories to last a lifetime.

EXPLORE THE ASIA PACIFIC WITH Visiting the beautiful and unspoiled locations of the AsiaPacific is becoming a must-do for superyacht owners and charter guests. As one of only a small number of charter yachts venturing to the region 49m La Dea II - built by Trinity Yachts in 2007 with an extensive refit in 2014 - offers a rare opportunity to experience this incredible destination. La Dea II’s adventurous itinerary that includes a world circumnavigation, has already taken her to the Galapagos Islands where guests were able to see incomparable wildlife in their natural surroundings. Now located in the heart of the Pacific she is cruising through the Pacific Islands, including the Society Islands, Tahiti, Cook Islands, Fiji and Vanuatu, and on to Australia and Asia. “The highlight of our trip is the itinerary itself,” says Captain Paul Hutchinson, who has been particularly struck by the remote beauty and diversity of the areas visited. “We sat in an amazing coral fringed bay for three days and didn’t see another yacht, not even in passing. It was impossible to not be taken by the sheer beauty and stillness of the surroundings.”
HORIZONS / 84
AN ADVENTUROUS ITINERARY ON BOARD LA DEA II Upcoming highlights include traditional ‘bucket list’ locations such as the Whitsunday Islands and Great Barrier Reef in Australia. From there La Dea II will travel to Thailand, cruising out of Phuket, North through the Similian and Surin Islands to Burma. She will then move South towards Malaysia via Phang Nga Bay, with the famous James Bond Island, and Koh Panyee, continuing further south past the Phi Phi Islands to Langkawi. Careful planning has ensured that La Dea II is fully set up to enjoy her travels. Her beautiful interior boasts a full beam master stateroom and panoramic sky lounge and outdoor spaces include a generous sun deck, al fresco dining and a huge stern swim platform. Zero-speed stablisers mean she combines speed when underway with comfort when at rest, able to comfortably cover the passages between destinations. Focus is firmly on guest enjoyment and the yacht carries two tenders and an abundance of toys, including sea kayaks, scooters and a powerful drone for creating memories of time on board. A new addition is a 9m custom tender, big enough to carry all the guests at
once and fully set up for day trips with storage for diving and fishing equipment. Diving will be a key feature throughout the trip, with the allure of the underwater world a huge attraction. One of the yacht’s biggest assets is her experienced crew, many of whom hail from the Asia-Pacific and can offer their local knowledge to help create unforgettable experiences. Captain Hutchinson believes the crew is world-class, with the team always working together. “Cruising in remote areas has helped the crew to gel as a team unit and everyone plays a role in ensuring that guest time aboard is truly memorable,” he says. “The crew really care for her and she has become a much loved yacht; I think that shines through for anyone to see.” With such an exciting trip still ahead of her, potential charter guests will be spoiled for choice when deciding where to join the yacht. However, having such a well-equipped and expertly crewed boat in the region is too good an opportunity to pass up. Tropical waters, unforgettable underwater scenes, local culture, untouched beaches and more await the next guests of La Dea II.

With over 300 days of sunshine, the region is typified by stunning anchorages in deep blue waters, dramatic calas (fjord-like inlets usually only accessible by boat) and natural harbors that are arguably some of the best in the world. The peek of the charter season is during the summer months, however the fall is a wonderful time to visit the area by sea. Temperatures are a little cooler, yet still very comfortable and the sea is still warm. Crowds are not as large in popular tourist spots and it is easier to secure berths.

The Galapagos Islands Through the eyes of LeAnn Morris Pliske Charter Consultant with IYC
BARTOLOME ISLAND, GALAPAGOS
I
solated from the rest of the world, the Galapagos Islands sit 1,000 kilometers off the coast of Ecuador. Alone in their solitude, evolution played particularly interesting tricks on the flora and fauna found there.
Most are endemic, found nowhere else on this earth. With no freshwater source, the islands were not popular with ocean going travellers. Many attempts at colonizing the islands failed, as the environment was too harsh. It wasn’t until the HMS Beagle explored the anchorages on a mapping mission in 1835, that the importance of these secluded islands began to be discovered. On board was a curious English Naturalist named Charles Darwin. Entranced by the unique animals he found, Darwin made a study of the Galapagos Mockingbird and Finch, whom exuded traits never observed before in the species. His study and findings ultimately produced his “The Origin of the Species by Means of Natural Selection, a marked departure from scientific thought of the day. Today al 13 main islands and over 40 islets are protected by the authority of the Galapagos National Park and Galapagos Marine Reserve and are living biological time capsules.

charter in the Galapagos is to visit a destination unlike any other. Highly regulated, in order to maintain and protect the environment, all charter yachts in the Galapagos are strictly permitted and must have Ecuadorean or Galapagenian crew as well as an Ecuadorean Flag. These highly specialized yachts offer unprecedented experience and local insight. The cruising itineraries are set in advance by the authorities, so not more than two yachts impact a site during a 24 hour period. This overseeing is wonderful for the environment and animals, but
HORIZONS / 112
it also has the added benefit of keeping crowds at bay and the anchorages secluded. Each yacht has at least one Naturalist/ Biologist, provided by the Reserve, all whom speak excellent English and often other languages besides Spanish. The entire Charter is spent at anchor, with no marinas at all in the islands. The topography of the islands vacillates between barren volcanic rock and lush highland jungle. Islands with recent volcanic activity have black sand, whereas the older islands are peppered with beautiful white sand beaches. Often while

relaxing in the crystalline ocean you will be visited by a marine iguana, casually swimming nearby. On land and in the sea, Galapagos Penguins, the northernmost of all penguin breeds, come curiously close, as if inspecting you. If fortune is really smiling on you, it will be pupping season and you will explore beaches littered with newborn sea lion pups. With melodic names Santa Cruz, San Cristobel, Isabela, Floreana and Bartolome, these islands sitting on the equator are directly in the convergence zone of five major oceanic currents.
Sweeping in from the south and north are the Humbolt and Cromwell currents; each providing an upwelling of nutrient rich cold water. This microscopic nutrition keeps the food chain robust and thriving, both in the water and on land. The Galapagos is the only place on earth where one can walk amongst giant tortoises and enjoy the crazy courtship dance of the blue-footed booby. In one day you can dive with Hammerhead sharks and have your toes tickled by a Sally Lightfoot crab. IYC.COM / 113
