The brokerage sector has maintained a healthy activity level, with 213 second hand yachts sold in H1 of 2019 compared to 242 in H1 of 2018. It is worth noting how strong a year 2018 was, so while used sales figures for H1 2019 are down 9% on H1 2018, they are up 19% on H1 2017 and 17% on H1 2016, indicating a stable and steady growth.
The first six months (H1) of 2019 opened on a positive note, following an extremely strong 2018 that displayed impressive levels of order book growth and market stability. This activity has carried through from 2018 to 2019 and it has been a busy first half to the year, with the industry recording 263 sales of new and used yachts of 24 meters and over and 441 yachts new to market in the first six months of the year.

YACHT SALES BY SIZE RANGE
Another continued trend in the new build sector is the growing number of larger yachts sold, with 50-70m yachts proving especially popular. In particular, the 60m+ sector has maintained a steady performance, recording similar sales figures for the new and used sectors three years in a row. Sales of 60m+ second hand yachts are up 43% in H1 2019 from H1 2018.
The 24-40m sector saw the biggest amount of activity in H1 2019, representing 75% of total yacht sales. Similarly, the 30-40m size bracket clocked 40% of new build sales. This is a promising indication that the number of owners buying in this ‘entry point’ sector remains strong, setting positive long term prospects for the growth of the buying market; traditionally owners will use smaller yachts as a stepping stone into larger yacht ownership.
Notable yachts sold in this category include 91.5m (300’2”) Oceanco M/Y Tranquility and 85.0m (278’10”) Lürssen M/Y Amatasia.
In good news for buyers, 423 motor yachts were added to the brokerage market, expanding the inventory substantially. 80% of the new entrants were in the 24 - 40m size range.

Unsurprisingly, motoryachts remain the most popular yacht type representing 89% of 24m+ yacht sales in H1 2019. We have seen continued interest in more adventurous and long range vessels, with explorer/expedition yachts remaining in high demand. In another enduring trend, proven and pedigree brands remain the main choice for discerning buyers who look to purchase yachts that have assured quality and that will maintain their value well. The US maintains its position as a significant buying force, with the market growing by 32.5% in the last three years, and 45.4% of superyacht sales being attributed to American buyers. A strong US economy has helped bolster activity, with clients confident in market
conditions and willing to invest in yacht ownership. While all key shipyards remain busy, with active order books, we should note that new build project sales are down versus the same period in 2018. This is in part due to the attractive inventory on the second hand market, and also due to a growing trend for owners looking to begin their ownership experience immediately without the wait time required by a new build, thus making a second hand purchase more appealing. Experience has shown that a second hand yacht purchase is an excellent introduction to ownership that often leads to a new build and this trend bodes well for future new order books.
