Design Brief and Specification Design Brief: With the growing world and the technological advances we have today, libraries have seen a decrease in the numbers of people visiting their sites. To make local libraries thriving there needs to be a new aspect in these libraries. Your task is to create a more communal environment, where people are able to come visit for reading and study purposes but also to meet new people and socialise. Creating an area like this will bring more people to libraries and will create more of a community area for the locals. The building should include a study area, a reading area and a space for communal purposes. The building also needs to draw interest from people, so that they are willing to come to the library. Create a more connected environment that meets the needs of different users. The theme of the site should be natural and organic. Specification:
The Research Library in Hradec Králové The first building that caught my attention is this library in Czechia. It was built in 2008 by Projektil Architekti. It has an area of 2920 m2.
This library is housed in two of the legs of a large “X” shape, which is made from precast concrete. The study rooms and bookshelves are distributed on three levels inside, which are enlightened by light coming in through the circular windows. The exterior of the building has many circular windows on the side walls, which create a repeating pattern, and includes larger circular windows on the flat roof. The largest window on the roof is right in the centre of the "X". From the path leading up to the building, we can enter the library, where there is also a café and an exhibition hall. The center of the X locates the main vertical communication illuminated by a circle roof light. The building creates an open public urban space, which complies with the ideas of architects (Projektil) about openness of public buildings in architecture.
In my opinion, the building looks like a chromosome. This is as one side of the "X" is plain with no circular windows, while the other has these. This could show how different each side of the building is as one has windows, while the other does not. I believe that the flat roof of the building could have problems with draining water off the roof, as its all flat. This could be changed by having a peaked roof to drain the water and add an aspect of better design to the building.
On the interior, the distribution of people and bookshelves starts from the central point to the rest of the wings of the X. There are bookshelves, study rooms, individual study rooms and a service counter. In the other wings there are offices, storage and a conference hall. The colored floor creates a lighter and more pleasant indoor atmosphere. Inside, there are two wall paintings and a new information system, which allows for more service to be provided for visitors. An important part of the design is also the energy-saving concept it includes.
The area in this elevation is located here
The building includes multiple floors of bookshelves, where the storage of these is very large. Allowing this can improve the reading and education of people visiting as they have a variety and large number of books. The building is quite large inside since the architects of this space want to bring about the idea of architecture having an openness feeling while inside the public space. In my opinion, this creates a better feeling for visitors as they can walk to wherever they want. Others can study in quieter spaces, as the building is large, so they can feel more away from people and distractions for better education and work purposes.
