Music video parody

Music video parody/spoof! We created a parody music video for ‘The Lazy Song by Bruno Mars, in the genre of Reggae pop.

Reggae pop is tempered with strong, melodic hooks, commercial production, and a crossover sensibility. Occasionally, reggae-pop is performed by pop bands wanting diversity in their sounds, however more often it's played by reggae artists with a likeness for pop.

And reggae influences were starting to form in rock and pop music, in the late 1960’s. One example being 1968's "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da" by The Beatles. Another majorly popular Reggae-pop example would be by Johnny Nash in 1972 - "I Can See Clearly Now".

A more recent example would be by Magic! With the song, rude in 2014.

As Reggae-pop is a mixture of pop and reggae it includes aspects from both genres to form its own. Pop is a genre of popular music that originated in its modern form in the Western world during the 1950s and 1960s (which is a softer alternative to rock and roll.) On the other hand, Reggae is a music genre that originated in Jamaica in the late 1960s. The term also indicates the modern popular music of Jamaica and its diaspora. In ‘The Lazy Song’ by Bruno mars, there is a clear usage of the convention – Long Take. Which is a continuous shot, with no cuts / shown cuts.

It is

effective because its immersive and it gives a nice feel to the music video, helping us relate to it as we may dance to his music in our house like him. And the way there is no cuts could make it feel as though it is happening now. This is like our spoof version of Bruno Mars’ ‘The Lazy Song’, as we also use a Long take, to imitate the original music video. However, our music video differs from the original because of the differences in choreography/dancing, the alternative backdrop, variety in camera movements & different masks. As pop music is pretty much just popular music from that time, you could say that reggae pop is just popular reggae. Many things are included in raggae and the music videos. One being that they include both narrative & performance in their music videos with one clear narrative. Although often they just have performance. As well as this the camera often uses shots to convey unity in a band/ community as that is important in reggae society. Also, there tends to be hand held shots to convey reality, used during the narrative, with tilts on instruments, and shots for dancing performance. Plus, you can normally see bright colours, with usage of filters to portray them. Creating a strong & entertaining music video when there could be no narrative. As it is Reggae pop there would be hints among these conventions showing influences from pop. This would include the artists clothed in fashionable, mainstream and stylish outfits. Where the lyrics would normally be based on love or relationship. And the artist uses hook lines which are catchy and therefore stick in the audiences’ head, with the song’s structure formed in a verse-chorus-verse way.
