A2: Chalk and Charcoal portrait

For this assignment you are to produce a life-size portrait using a range of tones and detail with CHALKS and CHARCOAL. You will need to take into account the sketchbook tasks and activities that you will learn during lessons and apply this knowledge to your final portrait.

You will receive more marks for using a full range of tone appropriately and and with good effect. Your work should also show good structure and proportion and include a full background.

Task 1: Research and Preparation • • • • • •

Look at some examples of student work in the Art Gallery by using the image icon (EXPLORE).

Click on the document icon (EXPLORE) to read the assessment objectives, use the weblinks for more help such as BBC's Bitesize objectives.

Collect a range of source images to help you with the subject for this assignment, stick them into your sketchbook for reference.

Using your sourced images, complete some initial sketches and studies in your sketchbook. This will give you vital practise for your main work.

Develop your work by modifying it through a series of alternative studies.

Produce at least one full-page prep piece in your sketchbook for you to work from.

Task 2: Making your Portrait • For this portrait you will use CHALKS and CHARCOAL to create a life-size portrait that uses a range of tone throughout the work. Previous sketchbook tasks and studies should be used and referred to for the development of your main work.

• Begin by lightly sketching the outline of your portrait using the skills learnt in the previous assignment (A1: Pencil Portrait). Develop your sketch into a stronger, cleaner outline drawing and remove all old sketchy lines that are no longer required.

• Add a background before you move on, this can either be something realistic (what you can see), or it can be an effect that you apply.

• Develop the background of your work first.

• Working from DARK to LIGHT add charcoal and chalk on relevant parts of your work using the techniques shown in class. To watch these techniques again, use the video tutorials in Art TV channel (EXPLORE).

• Work with care as Chalk and Charcoal can easily create a mess, clean your hands often and rest on some tissue or similar paper to protect your work while your work develops.

• Reflect on your progress often, sit back and assess your work with a critical eye.

Check the proportions and structure, and make sure that a good level of depth takes place helped by using a range of tones from dark to light.

• When you portrait is complete, fix the particles of chalk and charcoal into place by using a fixative like hair spray.

• Write your name and form on the back of your work and store in a safe place such as your class drawer or folder.

Submitting your sample work: • When you have completed the assignment. Take a photo using a digital camera and submit your work for assessment.

• Use the SUBMIT WORK button at the bottom right corner of this assignment page, and then use the bottom (2nd) BROWSE button, locate your sample work, click OPEN and OK. • Check that you have submitted your sample work correctly by viewing your markbook history.

• Make sure that you return your work to school and store it safely.

• After your work has been marked, read your feedback comments and print a copy out for your sketchbook.
