FOUR PILLARS of Success

2015 USF BASEBALL

EXCEL IN THE CLASSROOM

In 2013-14, USF student-athletes combined to post a 3.3 grade point average, which was higher than the general student population. More than half of all USF studentathletes earned West Coast Conference all-academic recognition. Twenty-five student athletes received first team WCC All-Academic recognition, which was the highest total among all conference schools. Four USF athletic teams earned perfect scores of 1,000 while four others produced scores of 990 or better in the 10th annual Academic Progress Rate statistics released today by the NCAA. USF’s men’s and women’s indoor track teams along with the women’s basketball and men’s tennis programs earned perfect 1,000 scores. All four squads were recognized with public recognition awards last week for producing APRs in the top 10 percent of their respective sports. Four other Don programs – men’s cross country (996), men’s outdoor track (996), women’s cross country (996) and women’s volleyball (995) registered scores of 990 or higher. Student-athletes from USF’s women’s track and field program were honored by the USTFCCA for compiling the highest cumulative grade point average in the nation among more than 208 schools. Four USF women’s golfers were named Women’s Collegiate Golf All-America Scholars for the 2013-14 season, as selected by the Women’s Golf Coaches Association of America. USF was the only WCC school to have more than two representatives on the team.

WIN AT THE HIGHEST LEVELS OF COMPETITION Two USF teams and two individuals took part in NCAA postseason competition during the 2013-14 season. USF’s women’s cross country team captured its fifth straight WCC Championship and achieved its highest national ranking in school history when the Dons jumped up to No. 10 in the USTFCCAA poll in early October and ultimately finished 19th at the NCAA Championships. Sophomore Eric Causey became the first male cross country runner to qualify for nationals. Bridgett Dahlberg became the second Don to win the individual title at the WCC Cross Country Championships while sophomore Eric Causey became the first USF male runner to qualify for nationals. In the spring, Bradley Zimmer (baseball) and Jana Soethout (track & field) earned AllAmerica status, giving USF two All-Americans in the same year for the first time since 1981. Zimmer was the 21st overall selection in the First Year Player Draft. Over the years, USF teams have captured nine national team championships and has produced two individual champions.

DANA HENDERSHOTT 1968-71 Hendershott was near untouchable while on the mound. The 1971 All-American held a career 2.20 ERA (school record) and in that storied ’71 season, Hendershott collected a 1.67 ERA and complied a record 0.60 ERA in league games. He was selected in the 26th round of the 1971 MLB Draft by the Los Angeles Dodgers.

TAGGERT BOZIED 1998-2001 Bozied is the most prolific hitter to ever wear Green and Gold. He is the only three-time All-American in program history, is one of the Top 50 athletes in WCC history and was the first Triple Crown winner in the modern era of the WCC. In 1999, he hit an astonishing 30 home runs with a .936 slugging percentage, both were best in the NCAA. Bozied was named the 1999 WCC Player of the Year and was taken in the second round of the 2000 MLB Draft. He also remains the WCC’s all-time leader in home runs with 60.

8 › University of THE BEST CITY EVER

JERMAINE CLARK 1995-97 Clark is a two-time All-American and was named to the All-WCC First Team three times. The infielder is USF’s career batting leader with a .361 average and is the school’s all-time leader in steals with 86. He was taken in the fifth round of the 1997 MLB Draft by the Seattle Mariners. He made his Major League debut on Apr. 4, 2001 with the Texas Rangers.

KYLE ZIMMER 2010-12

Zimmer quickly earned a reputation as one of the more feared pitchers in the WCC. The hard-throwing right hander struck out 200 batters in his three seasons on the Hilltop, sixth on the USF all-time list, and held a strikeout-to-walk ratio of nearly 5-to-1. He was a two-time All-WCC Team selection and then was taken fifth overall in the 2012 MLB Draft by the Kansas City Royals. It was the highest a Don had even been taken.

DANTE BENEDETTI Head Coach 1962-80, Player 1937-40 Benedetti was the patriarch of USF baseball for the better part of 20 years. He helped to rescue and rebuild the baseball program when he took over the team in 1962. He personally paid for equipment and uniforms for the team and helped guide them to 373 victories in his 19 seasons (second in USF history). Benedetti was named the West Coast Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 1971 and inducted into the San Francisco Prep Hall of Fame. USF’s home field was renamed Benedetti Diamond in 1980 and the team MVP award was also named for the great Dons coach. He lettered in football, baseball and boxing while a student at then-St. Ignatius College.

CON DEMPSEY 1941-43, 1946 Dempsey played in the Golden Age of baseball and was an All-Coast selection in 1943 and helped lead the Dons to a NBCA title. In his final season with USF, he went 7-1 with 85 strikeouts. He also played for the basketball team.

Derek Atkinson

OF • Senior L/R • 5-11 • 197 Camas, Wash. / Clackamas CC

2014 All-West Coast Conference Team The model of consistency for the Dons has been Derek Atkinson. The one-time transfer will have played all three outfield positions for USF and has been a consistent threat in the lineup. His first season with the Dons, he hit .304 with two home runs and 19 RBI in 43 games, including the walk-off home run in the second game of the inaugural West Coast Conference Championship Tournament against San Diego. Last season, he hit .330 with a team-high 44 RBI and earned a spot on the All-WCC Team. Over the summer, he played 14 games for the eventual Cape Cod League champion Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox and hit .282.

Christian Cecilio

12

LHP • Senior L/L • 6-2 • 183 San Jose, Calif. / Bellarmine College Prep

The senior lefty has been a mainstay on the mound for the Dons over the past three seasons and is set to move up the USF record books in a number of categories. Cecilio has made 42 starts going into the 2015 season, which puts him third on the team’s all-time list behind Kevin Rose (47, 2001-04) and Matt Lujan (49, 2008-11). Cecilio has also thrown a total of 218 innings, which places him 15th all-time at USF, and if he were to duplicate his 2014 total (91 IP), he would be only the third USF pitcher ever to reach the 300-inning plateau.

2014 All-West Coast Conference Honorable Mention 2015 Perfect Game Top 100 Seniors: No. 91 The first baseman had a bounce back season in 2014. After slipping below the Mendoza line in his sophomore season, Hendriks became one of the Don’s more dangerous hitters by hitting .287 with six home runs and a team-high 19 doubles. His power stroke started to present itself when he hit the gamewinning home run in the 19th inning of the team’s 6-5 win over No. 2 Cal State Fullerton. On the final day of the season, he hit two home runs against California to finish second on the team in big flies. He, then, played for the Cotuit Kettleers of the Cape Cod League and hit .298 with 15 RBI.

Giarratano became the winningest coach in the history of USF baseball when he surpassed Hilltop legend Dante Benedetti with his 374th victory in 2009. Entering the 2015 season, he currently sits third on the WCC’s all-time list for wins and has the second most for any active WCC coach. They duplicated their championship form in 2011 when they finished in first place again. In 2013, the Dons were on the doorstep of another championship when they participated in the inaugural WCC Championship series at Banner Island Ballpark in Stockton, Calif. only to fall to San Diego in three games.

PLAYERS DRAFTED UNDER NINO GIARRATANO Since Head Coach Nino Giarratano’s arrival on the USF campus, he has put together some of the better teams in the school’s history. More importantly, he has helped to develop players to the point where they could reach the dream of playing professional baseball. In his 16 seasons, 39 players have been drafted by Major League teams including four first round picks, three second round selections and two taken in the third round. None have been higher than Kyle Zimmer in 2012 when he was taken with the fifth overall pick by the Kansas City Royals. His younger brother, Bradley, was taken 21st overall by the Cleveland Indians last season. Former Dons stars Jesse Foppert, Aaron Poreda and Scott Cousins have seen time in the Majors after developing their skills on the Hilltop.

2014 IN REVIEW

2015 USF BASEBALL

2014 SEASON HIGHLIGHTS ››WITH THE 21ST PICK… The Dons have been fortunate over the last decade to have some special players grace the Benedetti Diamond dugout and one of them was Bradley Zimmer. The 6-foot-4 outfielder put all of his skills on display in 2014 and hit .368 with seven home runs, a program-record seven triples, and 21 stolen bases. His rare combination of power and speed caught the eyes of many scouts and it led to him being selected 21st overall by the Cleveland Indians. He became the fourth Don to be picked in the first round of the MLB Draft and the first since 2012 when his brother, Kyle, was taken fifth overall by the Kansas City Royals.

Bradley Zimmer

He was named a First Team All-American and earned a spot on the All-West Coast Conference Team for the second time.

››TOP NOTCH WINS USF had a tough preseason schedule and found itself in some close games against some of the nation’s best teams. In the second weekend of the season, they traveled to No. 2 Cal State Fullerton for a three-game set and opened up the series with a marathon not to be soon forgotten. The Dons pushed the Titans to the 19th inning, where Brendan Hendriks finally broke the tie with a booming home run to give them the 6-5 win. Houston Hibberd went six innings in relief for the win and earned WCC Pitcher of the Week honors.

Brendan Hendriks also made an impression in 2014. After struggling for much of his sophomore campaign, Hendriks came out strong in 2014. He hit his first career home run in the 19th inning against No. 2 Cal State Fullerton and went onto hit six for the season, including a two home run game against California. He hit a team-high 19 doubles to go along with 39 RBI and a slugging percentage of .493, second on the team.

››SAVES MACHINE Houston Hibberd started the season looking to earn time out of the bullpen for the Dons and ended up being the team’s most reliable reliever. He made 25 appearances out of the bullpen with a 2.15 ERA and set a school record with 11 saves, surpassing sidearmer Adam Cimber (9, 2013). Hibberd’s most impressive outing came in the second week of the season when he went six shutout innings out of the ’pen to pick up the 6-5 19-inning win over No. 2 Cal State Fullerton. He earned WCC Pitcher of the Week honors for the performance.

Sheldon Lee

About a month later, the Dons had their ace, Abe Bobb, on the mound to face off with No. 27 Arkansas and eventual 12th round pick Jalen Beeks in the Cal Baseball Classic. The senior matched him pitch for pitch as he went seven innings, allowing one run in the team’s 2-1 victory over the Razorbacks. The Dons welcomed in No. 7 Oregon to Benedetti Diamond in late March. In the opener of that two-game series, left-hander Sheldon Lee put together that would be a sign of things to come as he went five strong innings, holding the Ducks to one unearned run, as the Dons won 8-4.

››EMERGING, RESURGING STARS Sheldon Lee, who had started out in the bullpen for the Dons, emerged as one of the team’s more consistent starters down the stretch. He made his first start of the season on Mar. 25 against No. 7 Oregon and went five strong innings without allowing an earned run. It started a stretch of 27 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run. Lee had career highs in innings pitched (54.0), wins (five) and strikeouts (32) to go along with a 3.83 ERA, second best on the team.

WEST COAST CONFERENCE 2015 USF BASEBALL

USF MEN’S SOCCER › 2014

Lynn Holzman Commissioner

The West Coast Conference was formed in 1952 to provide a convenient venue for five San Francisco Bay Area schools to compete in basketball. Since that modest beginning, the Conference has evolved and grown to become a nationally recognized and competitive force in intercollegiate athletics, with 13 league-sponsored sports: baseball; both men’s and women’s basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, and tennis; and women’s volleyball and women’s rowing. The league began in 1952-53 as the California Basketball Association, and included College of the Pacific, Saint Mary’s College, University of San Francisco, San Jose State University, and Santa Clara University. It remained five teams until 1956-57, when Loyola Marymount, Pepperdine, and Fresno State joined the conference, giving it eight teams. At that time, the conference’s name was changed to the West Coast Athletic Conference (WCAC). After just one season, Fresno State departed and the WCAC remained a seven-member conference until welcoming UC Santa Barbara in 1965-66. Four years later UC Santa Barbara and San Jose State left the WCAC, and were replaced by Nevada-Reno and Nevada-Las Vegas - expanding the conference’s footprint to a second state. Pacific announced its departure in 1971, and was replaced by Seattle University for the 1971-72 school year. Four years later, UNLV announced its independence after winning a WCAC men’s basketball crown. The WCAC was left with seven member institutions for two years, before welcoming the University of Portland prior to the 1977-78 school year. Nevada left the WCAC in 1979, and the conference welcomed Gonzaga University and the University of San Diego to the mix beginning in 1979-80. One year later, Seattle ended its participation at the Division I level, reducing the number of schools in the WCAC from nine to eight.

The WCAC shortened its name to West Coast Conference in 1989, and developed a new logo in 1995 that lasted until 2011. Thirty years after its most recent expansion, the WCC welcomed its ninth member by extending an invitation to Brigham Young University in September of 2010. BYU officially joined the West Coast Conference on July 1, 2011, followed by the return of University of the Pacific on July 1, 2013. Today, the 10 WCC members span the western coast of the United States from Canada to Mexico, from the pine forests of Eastern Washington, to the Columbia River Basin, to the dynamic San Francisco Bay Area, to the sunny beaches of Southern California, to the majestic mountains of Utah. The Conference is characterized by the stability of its membership - only two conferences have been together longer - and its unique emphasis on combining excellence in athletics with excellence in academics. The Conference recognizes championships in each of its sports, has hosted NCAA championship events, and produced 26 NCAA Division I individual or team champions. And, many outstanding WCC student-athletes have gone on to excel in professional sports. The long and rich history of the WCC demonstrates that success in intercollegiate athletics can be built on the foundation of values, character, and academics.
