WATER’S EDGE PLAZA DLR GROUP PRIZE - FIRST PLACE

Our project focused on the recreational and agricultural revitalization of the Des Moines River. Mainly by addressing water collection and floodwater management, we were able to use this water as a source of irrigation as well as a means of bringing people together in community. Our studio brief required us to design a farm-to-table restaurant as well as a greenhouse that would incorporate sustainable design techniques as well as a natural response to the surrounding environment. Water’s Edge Plaza is a riverfront restaurant and greenhouse that utilizes the river as a means of agricultural transportation and recreational kayak port storage.

ARMATURE OF SAUDADE H. KENNARD BUSSARD AWARD FINALIST

This studio studied the stories of particular disasters in relation to the histories of the cities, societies and cultures they impacted. We attempt to understand these disasters, the inequities they pried open, and moments of civil society they gave rise to through an architectural idiom, with the goal of transforming our vision of what architecture is and can be. The city of Lisbon was built upon layers of history and a longing for the past that continues to resonate throughout time. Longing not only serves as a form of reminiscing, but also as an architectural tool for transcending boundaries. In the midst of collapse, caught in time and longing for a place, the armature of saudade embeds itself within the city of Lisbon. Project Site Lisbon, Portugal Partner Henry Melendrez Year 2021

PRISMA DESIGN BUILD

Prisma is a design build in which 77 students collaborated to build a structure that would react to the forces of nature. Prisma is located in Reiman Gardens at Iowa State University and is made from wooden timber posts, steel cables, nets, acrylic iridescent panels, and welded steel hubs. The structure is meant to interact with the surrounding environment as well as create intrigue and interaction with incoming visitors. Prisma was designed with a total of 30 hubs and 96 fins. These were connected to 50 individual wooden members, which were divided into different categories depending on their pre-determined factors. Some wooden members connected to our hammocks, while others were meant to connect to our cable system; this was where the iridescent panels were placed.

NEXUS

THIRD YEAR ARCHITECTURE STUDIO

Apartments in NYC have failed at creating community spaces within the housing project. An example of this is in the Queens-bridge housing project as it’s notorious for its lack of community space and relying on the corridor and circulation to create social interactions. This proposal rebels against the standard double-loaded corridor as it doesn’t usually allow natural light or ventilation into the interior of a building, causing the space to feel claustrophobic. To create effective communal spaces, the project embodied the lightness that timber provides throughout the building’s elevation and openness. The flexible modularity of the units allows us to create voids of space where we prioritize natural interaction. These masses are connected with a network of streets and a grouping of commonly shared community programs.
