PROJECT 1
SHAW’S CREEK COMMUNITY CENTER
SHAW’S CREEK COMMUNITY CENTER FOR OAAAS COMPETITION
BUILDING CONCEPT
THE DESIGN OF THE NEW ADDITION UTILIZES SUSTAINABLE BUILDING CONCEPTS, THROUGH ITS OPEN CONCEPT AND LIGHT FEEL. EACH AREA OF THE NEW DYNAMIC PAVILLION IS EITHER OPEN TO THE NATURAL LIGHT THROUGH SKYLIGHTS OR TO NATURE; THROUGH THE USE OF CURTAIN WALLS. THE DESIGN OF THE NEW PAVILLION BUILDING UTILIZES SUSTAINABLE BUILDING CONCEPTS, THROUGH ITS INTEGRATION OF GREEN WALLS, ROOF, RECYCLED MATERIALS, SOLAR PANELS, AND UNIQUE SUSTAINABLE LIGHTING TECHNIQUES. THE BUILDING’S HYBRID FORM CONTRASTS THE RECTILINEAR LINES AND STONE MASONRY MASS OF THE EXISTING HERITAGE BUILDING WITH THE DRAMATIC GEOMETRY OF THE NEW LARGELY TRANSPARENT ARCHITECTURAL BUILDING. THIS APPROACH MIMICS THE CONTRAST BETWEEN THE OLD AND THE NEW AS EXEMPLIFIED BY THE ARTISTIC LEGACY OF LOCAL PIONEERING ARTISTS SUCH AS THE GROUP OF SEVEN WITH THE EMERGING REGIONAL ART SCENE. IT TRULY ENCOMPASSES THE FEELING OF WALKING THROUGH NATURE AND FROM THE OUTSIDE LOOKS LIKE THE GROWTH OF A GREAT MOUNTAIN PEAK WHICH SYMBOLIZES STRENGTH, GROWTH AND JOURNEY WHICH IS PARAMOUNT FOR THE COMMUNITY. THE UNIQUE LANDSCAPE AROUND OUR SITE WAS THE INSPIRATION AND MAIN THEME OF OUR SITE. WE WANT OUR VISITORS TO EMBRACE NATURE AND JOURNEY THROUGH IT. THE BUILDING’S HYBRID FORM CONTRASTS THE RECTILINEAR LINES AND STONE MASONRY MASS OF THE EXISTING HERITAGE BUILDING WITH THE DRAMATIC GEOMETRY OF THE NEW LARGELY TRANSPARENT ARCHITECTURAL BUILDING.
