PARAMETRIC DESIGN
Unique Innova7ons presented by contemporary computa7onal design techniques “Design is the epitome of intelligent behavior: it is the single most important ability that dis7nguishes humans from other animals. Although some animals can use tools to help them accomplish certain tasks – such as extrac7ng termites from a mound, or breaking coconuts – no other animal is capable of analyzing a problem to uncover its root causes, which can help it to consistently and deliberately devise the means to solve the problem even when these means are not immediately obvious” Understanding and U7liza7on of digital technology in architecture has changed drama7cally in recent years. There are four phases in the design process. Problem Analysis Solu7on synthesis Evalua7on – Discourse: Ideas, processes, precedents Communica7on – physical/digital models, photographs, text and a range of consultants. From Kalay – Architecture as new media (2004)

Dutch architect Ben van Berkel’s design for "a house that would be acknowledged as a reference for the renova7on of the architectural language” can be seen as a key precedent when discussing architectural discourse. It took the architect six years to fulfill his clients' wishes, crea7ng a house based on the studies of a 19th‐ century German mathema7cian. The spa7al concept of the new Mercedes‐ Benz Museum in Studgart has taken precedence from van Berkel’s earlier design for Mobius house.

PARAMETRICS “Parametrics can provide for a powerful concep7on of architectural form by describing a range of possibili7es, replacing in the process stable with variable, singularity and mul7plicity” (Architecture in the digital age‐Kolarevic) Fig 3. Torus House – Preston Scod Cohen
