MVP OLYMPICS 2016:
THE BATTLE OF THE BEST For the sixth edition of the MVP Olympics, the giants of the MVP Group of Companies battled it out in on the field, putting to test their strength, stamina and wits in the biggest sports fest of the year. Hosted by First Pacific Leadership Academy at Meralco, Ortigas, last February 26 to March 5 , the MVP Olympics brought together 23 companies in a fun exercise of healthy competition. The first MVP Olympics was held in 2010, with the aim to promote sportsmanship, wellness, discipline, teamwork, leadership, camaraderie, and passion for excellence. And from a small gathering of athletes in 2010, this year, almost 3,000 employees participated in the week-long MVP Olympics. On February 26, at the Meralco TSB Grounds, Derek Ramsay and Jasmine Curtis kicked off the weeklong sports fest with the CEOs of the MVP Group of Companies. The heads of companies joined the symbolic torch lighting, as the teams were introduced through a parade. This year’s participating teams included groups from Smart, Sun, PLDT, SPi Global, Metro Pacific Investments Corporation (MPIC), Metro Pacific Hospital Group, Meralco, Maynilad, MediaQuest, Metro Pacific Tollways Corporation (MPTC), ePLDT, and the Philex Mining Corporation. Bringing to life the theme, Isang Puso sa Isip, Diwa at Gawa, each of the games and athletic challenges were specifically included to help bring out the best in each player and strengthen the bonds between teams. The teams competed in 18 major sports events, 5 talent competitions, and 4 fun games. These include sports/games like basketball, golf, badminton, track and field, volleyball and bowling, among others. The array of challenges pushed the participants to their physical limits. The talent-based competitions, on the other hand, which included a battle of the bands, street dance, and beauty pageant (Bb. MVP Olympics), had participants showcasing their hidden artistic talents. To add some light fun to the competition, fun games such as the egg toss, group sack race, group jump rope and wooden ski race were included. After a hectic week, the winners were officially declared on March 5, and were given due recognition at the Awards Night. Roy Agustin K. Evalle (CEO and General Manager of the First Pacific Leaderhip Academy), Al Panlilio (President of MVP Sports Foundation / Senior Vice President for Customer Retail Services and Corporate Communications of Meralco), and Manuel V. Pangilinan (CEO and Chairman of MVP Group of Companies) congratulated all the winners and lauded the efforts of each participant to make the sports fest a certified success. In the final tally, the PLDT group won a total 28 gold, 13 silver and 8 bronze medals. This is their third championship win after dominating the previous MVP Olympics in 2014. In second place was Maynilad, with 13 gold, 13 silver and 12 bronze medals. And finishing off in an equally impressive third place is Meralco with 6 gold, 17 silver and 14 bronze medals.

RAKE’S PAGE opening remarks
2016 mvp olympics opening ceremonies Chairman Manuel V. Pangilinan, our very dear Presidents & beloved C.E.O.s of our various companies in the Group, our Mancom members, my dearest colleagues, all the various teams, team coaches, team managers, good evening! Welcome to the 2016 MVP Olympics!!! When the invitation to host the MVPO was offered to us by Mr. Al Panlilio last year, I did not have any qualms of accepting it. But wait a minute, let me correct that, I actually grabbed it. Filled with tons of excitement, I gave him my resounding yes…..why not! We at the First Pacific Leadership Academy advocates thought leadership in sports and I believe this event, like any other major sports tournament, epitomizes our commitment to excellence. After experiencing five MVPOs in the past, three with my former company, Maynilad, and two with FPLA, I have been witness to the game-changing effects of competing. The players’ passion to excel and their indomitable drive to succeed are overwhelming. The feeling of winning is simply amazing. In life, nothing quite compares to the thrill of victory or the despair of a loss. Indeed, as Boss MVP once said, “sports is a metaphor of life. The values learned on the playing field — where you set goals, work to achieve them, take risks, become team players, and endure the stresses and criticisms that go with it — all of these prepare us for life.” For this year, the MVPO Organizing Committee selected a very familiar and relevant theme for this biennial event….Isang Puso. Puso was, is and will be the story of our Gilas Pilipinas Basketball Team. Puso was our hashtag last year during our bid to host the 2019 FIBA World Cup. Puso remains to be the battle cry of all Filipino athletes competing in the international arena. This is why we chose Puso. We are a group of companies… very close. Iba’t-ibang negosyo, iba’t-ibang pamamahala, iba’t-ibang misyon, iba’t-ibang adbokasiya, ngunit iisa, iisa ang puso – Pusong MVP, sa isip, sa diwa at sa gawa!!! Quick facts ladies and gentlemen: over 60 events, 23 participating teams, almost 3,000 athletes and 1 champion. As your Organizing Chairman, I guarantee that this will be the most memorable MVPO. The MVP Olympics Organizing Committee took advantage of this opportunity to introduce improvements, which we hope will generate more excitement and fun. Allow me to mention some of these: 1) We have leveled the playing field by introducing an entirely new set of fun games. These 4 new teambuilding-type games are similar activities, which we have been conducting in Antipolo. 2) We have upgraded the competition of selecting the best company muse to a full-blown beauty pageant now called Binibining MVP Olympics. 3) We have modified the straight-forward singing competition to a more exciting Sing-a-Like Contest. 4) For the very first time, groups competing in the Battle of the Bands will play songs from a common music era or genre. 5) Darts will be introduced as a sports event this year. We hope more and more new events and games will be introduced in the future. There’s so much to look forward to in this weeklong affair. Too bad for FPLA, the Griffins will have to wait for 2018 before we could participate once again. In the spirit of neutrality and fairness, FPLA, as this year’s host, abstained from joining any event. Nevertheless, the mighty Griffins will hope to be back stronger and better in two years just like all of you. And we hope to join you again. My heartfelt thanks go out to all the members of the Organizing Committee. For my tireless friend, Art Aro, Maita David and Miggy Mendoza; my FPLA ManCom Team, the MVP Sports Foundation Board of Trustees and Officers headed by our Chairman, our beloved Manuel V. Pangilinan, President and Trustee Alfredo Panlilio, Victorico Vargas, Trustee, Orlando “Doy” Vea, Trustee, Patrick Gregorio, Trustee and Executive Director Patricia Bermudez-Hizon; and of course our production agency, the commissioners and chairpersons of the various events for your puso and excellent work. I would like to convey my best wishes to all the participating companies. May the best team win! Mabuhay ang MVP Group! Mabuhay ang MVPO! Puso! ROY AGUSTIN K. EVALLE

gold medals and a combined 25 talent and sporting events. The theme, Kapatid Kampihan na! Atin ang Tagumpay was meant to highlight teamwork—as the group solidified into a major conglomerate in the Philippines, it was teamwork that will allow the MVP Group to reach its next level.
Back in 2010, a group led by Mr. Patrick Gregorio, who was then Head of Smart Sports, organized what would prove to be the biggest and most unifying sporting event of the MVP Group—the MVP Olympics.
Since then, the event has seen unprecedented growth in its events and participants. The 2013 and 2014 editions saw similar growth. With 19 companies and 55 gold medals for 2013, the 2014 edition featured 21 companies and 62 gold medals. The MVP Group’s continued growth made its name synonymous to success in the outside world. The theme, Tatak MVP, Tatak ng Tagumpay was used for the 2014 MVPO. It celebrated not only its corporate victories but also the victories it shared with the Filipino people — Team Gilas Pilipinas, Talk ‘N Text in the PBA, and the Boxing and Taekwondo programs in the 2013 SEA Games.
Through the eyes of Patricia Hizon, Executive Director of MVP Sports Foundation
The MVPO was created for employee-athletes to celebrate the growth, diversity and strength that they all share. The first MVPO featured the 15 companies that made up the MVP Group and had 36 Gold Medals at stake. With the theme, Para sa Tropa, Para sa Tagumpay the event succeeded in introducing the various companies to each other and giving them an occasion to get together and to get a glimpse of each other’s unity, culture and workforce. HOW IT ALL STARTED by Arturo Aro
Everyone was sad. Sad that the Talk ‘N Text Team lost in a controversial quarterfinals match against crowd favorite Ginebra in the 2009-2010 season of the PBA All Filipino Conference Cup as they were gunning for their back to back championship. The person who really took the lost to heart was none other than Chairman MVP. Seeing the team’s loss as an opportunity to turn things around was my former boss, Pato Gregorio, who was then the head of Smart Sports. He proposed a “Cheer up MVP” plan to then PLDT SVP for HR and Business Transformation Ricky Vargas of putting together a sports fest participated in by companies under the PLDT and MPIC group. Being a sports aficionado himself, Mr. Vargas understood the positive repercussions of holding an annual sports intramural: wellness, boost in morale, collaborative synergies, camaraderie, teamwork and company pride. After

much deliberation, Mr. Vargas gave the go signal for the first MVP Olympics, named after and dedicated to the person who embodies integrity, competence, and passion: Mr. Manuel V. Pangilinan. Appointed as the project manager for this endeavor, I was immediately given instructions to come up with a program detailing the events that will be included, dates, and plans of action. It was a daunting task, given that I was only provided a P500,000.00 working budget to stage everything. The program I initially presented to Pato and Mr. Vargas was a very straightforward, no fanfare type of sports fest that included only 8 sporting events. They shot it down arguing that we should also have other non-sporting events to distinguish the MVP Olympics from the other company sports fest. Thus 8 sporting events became 9, plus 4 fun games and 3 talent events. The MVPO should also have an opening parade, a torch lighting ceremony, and a car raffle! Taking
into consideration all of their inputs, the cost rose from P500,000 to P5,000,000! I thought to myself: “Oh where o where in the universe will I find budget for this?”. I must have been thinking out loud because Mr. Vargas suggested that the staging of the MVP Olympics should be a shared cost among the participating companies since their respective employees will directly benefit from it. All we needed to do was draft a letter to each company president soliciting financial assistance to put up the P5M needed to stage the event. The clincher was to have MVP sign the letter of request which meant that we had to wait for the perfect time to catch him. I vividly remember that day. It was 12nn, Ash Wednesday and I got a call from Pato telling me that there was a special mass to be held for MVP at the MGO Building Chapel at that time. I dropped everything, printed all the letters to the Presidents, and literally ran from Smart Tower to PLDT MGO Building. I arrived in the nick of time just as the mass was concluding. Still sweating profusely and legs shaking, I handed the letters to Chairman MVP.
He carefully scanned thru it, and finally affixed his signature. That signature would launch an armada of zealous teams from the PLDT and MPIC Group headed towards the first ever MVP Olympics and what would prove to be the most unifying sports event of the MVP Group. And yes the plan worked! It did cheer up Chairman MVP.
1ST MVP OLYMPICS (2010) The first will always be the most memorable for me as Smart Sports took the lead in the execution. With all participating companies on board, formal preparations for the 1st MVP Olympics started with just a little over a month before D-day. I have to admit that everything was rushed and there were a lot of items that were not included in the approved budget. But because of the collaborative and collegial environment that the MVP Group cultivates, the companies more than willingly provided these overlooked items to the organizing committee at no extra cost. Meralco offered their sprawling compound as the official venue and even provided additional manpower to cover logistics, security, and janitorial services. For our critical communications requirements, PLDT and Smart provided our secretariat with several broadband connections and prepaid top ups. Maynilad more than compensated for our hydration requirements for the whole 3 days. All hospitals joined forces to provide us with a respectable and professional medical team. The Tollways group loaned us hundreds of their traffic cones that were fully utilized for the field events.
MediaQuest provided the star factor by lending us some of their TV5 celebrities to host the opening ceremonies, the talent events and the closing ceremonies. This collegial and collaborative framework is still being practiced to this very day. Mr. Ricky Vargas of PLDT was appointed Organizing Chairman. All 9 events, 4 fun games, and 3 talent events were all compressed in just 3 days! Everything was a blur as the 1st Olympics transpired before my eyes. I can hardly remember seeing a sad face that day. It exuded such a very festive and happy atmosphere that everywhere you looked, you would see employees smiling and laughing together with teammates. I won’t forget the spirit of brotherhood, camaraderie and togetherness as competing teams would shake hands, hug, and pat each other’s backs regardless of who won or lost the match. I would also see competing players having a meal together or would just simply sit together and watch a match and cheer for teams neither of them are affiliated with. Probably the most surprising thing we witnessed about the Olympics is how much hidden talent the employees had. Everyone was blown away with the athleticism and performances of all participants as they competed in the sports and talent events! As if the festiveness of the Olympics could not get any higher, everyone was treated to a Mardi Gras Fun Run on the last day which was participated in by a thousand costumed runners. We even awarded gold medals for the runner who had the best costume and for the team who had the biggest delegation. PLDT emerged as the over-all champion of the 1st MVP Olympics.
2ND MVP OLYMPICS (2011) That year saw the MVP Group expand with the acquisition of new companies bringing the number of competing teams from 15 to 17. We also saw the increase in the number of events to 10 sports, 7 fun games, and 4 talent events. The responsibility of chairmanship that year was given to Mr. Al Panlilio of Meralco, SVP for Customer Retail Services, Corp Marketing and Communication. Wanting to avoid the very short lead time that we had in preparing for the Olympics the previous year, we started preparations that year with a lead time of 6 months before D-day. That year would also change the playing field of the MVP Olympics forever. With a beefed up line-up of some companies, we saw former collegiate, commercial, and professional athletes compete for the 1st time in the Olympics. This totally elevated the level of competition. This did not, however intimidate the other companies as they still gave all their best and leaving all they had in the court proving that recreational athletes too can square off with these former elite athletes. Maynilad bagged the over-all championship with an impressive medal haul from nearly all events.
Nobody complained. Nobody protested. This is the happiest MVP Olympics.

all championship as they continued to display their dominance on most events.
Maynilad was dethroned by PLDT that year and reclaimed the title as the overallchampion.
3RD MVP OLYMPICS (2012) With the establishment of the MVP Sports Foundation (MVPSF) led by its President Mr. Al Panlilio, the MVP Olympics was now organized by a dedicated body that would propel the event to new heights of excitement and competition. Mr. Mon Fernandez, then President and CEO of the Metro Pacific Tollways Group took on the role as the Organizing Chairman that year. The number of events grew to 14 sports, 6 fun games, and 5 talent events. I distinctly remember during one of our MVPO HR Council meetings when nearly majority of the attendees suggested that the organizing committee come up with a rule to even out the playing field considering that some companies have former elite athletes in their line-up. There was a lot of heated discussions on this issue that took up more than a month of planning when Chairman MVP finally decided to allow former elite athletes play in the same category as the recreational athletes. Chairman MVP reasoned out that employee athletes should not settle for mediocrity and should not strive to be just the best among the average. After all, this is not an attitude that is encouraged within the MVP Group. As a former collegiate athlete myself, I also explained and reasoned out to the group that facing against these former elite athletes should be treated as a privilege. A privilege that the average employee athlete will only get stronger and gain more confidence and experience. Besides, people will always side with the underdog. Maynilad once again bagged the over-

all the events as mandated by Organizing Chairman Mr. Charles Lim, then Executive Vice President of Smart Communications. This setup allowed top management to join their direct reports as teammates and as equals strengthening further relationships built on trust and loyalty.
4TH MVP OLYMPICS (2013) That year would mark a historic milestone for the Olympics as the opening ceremonies were held at the massive Smart-Araneta Coliseum. With 19 participating companies and over 10,000 employees in attendance, the coliseum was jam packed full of excited and passionate fans. Atty. Ray Espinosa, then President and CEO of MediaQuest was appointed organizing Chairman. That year would also be the first time that the events would be spread out over a week of festivities because squeezing all 15 sports, 5 fun games, and 5 talent events in 3 days would be logistically impossible. Still an unbeatable force to reckon with, Maynilad won their 3rd overallchampionship. 5TH MVP OLYMPICS (2014) That year would be the biggest and the grandest Olympics to date with 16 sporting events, 7 fun games, and 5 talent events participated in by more than 2,800 athletes from 21 participating companies. On top of these events, we prepared an additional 4 “mystery” games. These events were kept top secret until the day of the event and participants were picked on that very same day. This approach prevented the companies and the participants to prepare for these games giving everyone a fair chance for a podium finish. The MVP Sports Foundation Board of Trustees decided that year that the Olympics was to be staged on a biennial basis, hence the next iteration would be 2 years from then.

year and reclaimed the title as the overall-champion. The MVP Sports Foundation Board of Trustees decided that year that the Olympics was to be staged on a biennial basis, hence the next iteration would be 2 years from then.
6TH MVP OLYMPICS (2016) This year’s Olympics would be remembered as the most organized and classiest to date with the exceptional hands-on leadership of Organizing Chairman Mr. Roy Evalle, General Manager and CEO of the First Pacific Leadership Academy. With the number of newly acquired hospitals this year by the Metro Pacific Hospital Group, the chief executives of these hospitals all decided to join forces to form one formidable team. Light Rail Manila Corporation and Roxas Holdings, Inc. also made their appearance during the opening ceremonies as observers. Their presence would also serve as a warning to all competing teams that they will be a force to be reckoned with in the next Olympics. With a record high of 61 gold medals at stake, the level of competition could not get any higher! With 18 sports, 4 fun games, and 5 talent events spread out in 13 days, employees of the 11 participating teams showed their full support for their respective teams as they flocked towards Meralco for the 6th time.
THE MVP OLYMPICS - A CULTURE OF CHAMPIONS There are now 23 participating companies, almost 3,000 athletes and over 60 events making the MVP Olympics comparable to the size of major international multidisciplinary events. Regular employees by now have adopted a very active lifestyle to keep themselves fit year in year out prompting the companies they work for to put up support wellness programs as well. This active lifestyle has not only enabled the employees to perform better at the Olympics, but has paved the way for them to be fully engaged in the workplace. The Olympics now feature known ex-collegiate players, former national team members, and former professional athletes elevating further the level of competition. We currently see recreational athletes confidently get in a match with these elite players, knowing that they too have a top caliber coach and a very supportive team cheering them on to the last second of the match. On the other hand, these former elite athletes have also been given the opportunity to be employed by the country’s leading companies within the MVP Group, giving them the stage to continue pursuing their passion for sport while also giving them a brighter future. The MVP OLYMPICS is not just any sports fest. The level of competition is unbelievably higher than your average inter-company sports fest. This is just a simple reflection of the same, if not higher level of competitiveness of the companies under the MVP Group in their respective industries. No matter the circumstances, no matter how much the odds are stacked against them, and no matter who the competition is, the drive to continually excel is what propels these “corporate athletes” achieve new heights of accomplishments both in the MVP Olympics and in the corporate arena. This is the MVP Olympics!
With a truly reinforced line up, PLDT again emerged as the over-all champion with an impressive medal haul of 28 gold medals, 13 silver medals, and 8 bronze medals.
