History

Jacamar Naturalist Tours was created 16 years ago by three naturalist guides, at La Fortuna de San Carlos. Nowadays Mr. Humberto Mora (one of the founders), remains as the only owner of the company. Some years ago, we introduced to other areas of the country to serve our clients with products needed in different regions such as Papagayo area, Tamarindo and all Guanacaste, Río Celeste, San José and the central pacific. The company was created with a goal of offering more personalized tours, focusing on naturalism, but keeping adventure and cultural tours strongly. In the past years Jacamar has been working on better policies to protect the environment, adopting better operation issues and practices in order to accomplish a sustainable operation and certificates.

Jacamar Naturalist Tours is a company committed with safety and wellness of their customers and staff. For this reason, Jacamar has alliances with healthcare companies, which give us advice and support in case of emergency with customers and collaborators. Among the services, we also educate our staff on handling accidents and provide customer service and ambulance service or clinic if needed.


Arenal Tours


Arenal Volcano Tour Starts with a hike on the National Park. It is possible to observe plants, wildlife and lava rock formations. You will have a beautiful view of Lake Arenal, if weather allows it.The tour could conclude with a relaxing stop at the mineral hot spring of your choice.

Arenal Hanging Bridges A reserve filled with lush vegetation and a variety of birds and animals, which your experienced guide will help you spot. Crossing nine fixed bridges and 6 suspension bridges and it’s laid out at a maximum grade of 7 degrees allows that anyone can walk it. Also this place owns one of the best panoramic views of the Arenal Volcano.

Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge Tour It’s considered one of the best sites for bird watching. Caño Negro is also home of: sloths, monkeys, caimans, lizards, bats, and a variety of flora native of the wetlands. We take a boat to navigate for approximately three hours on the river. Since the beginning our guide goes explaining you everything about this marvelous eco-system.

Safari Floating Adventure Experience the peacefulness of the forest traveling on River Peñas Blancas with the opportunity to observe many animals such as monkeys, sloths, iguanas, turtles, crocodiles and birds. This tour will be accompanied by an experienced naturalist guide who will explain many fascinating details about trees, plants, birds and other animals.


Combination Tour (Best 4 Attractions) In the morning we visit the impressive Arenal Hanging Bridges, the beautiful Río Fortuna waterfall, and then take a delicious lunch to regain energy and walk in the National Park to assess the effects of volcanic activity and finally relax a while in the hot springs of your choice. There is possibility to observe a wide variety of plants, wildlife, the magnificent Volcano & Lake Arenal.

Early Birdwatching Birds are most active early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Join us for a walk nearby Arenal Lake or your hotel, for an amazing display of tropical birds. You will have the opportunity to see toucans, parrots, hawks, colorful tanagers and parakeets. For the more experienced birdwatcher, we can focus on looking for Royal Flycatchers, Whitefronted Nun birds, Cinnamon Woodpeckers and other less commonly seen species

Kayaking on Arenal Lake This relaxing tour can be done at morning or afternoon, and then enjoy a pleasant moment of kayaking on Lake Arenal and scenic beauty that surrounds the Arenal Volcano. On your trip you may observe different species of birds and may also possibly hear the Howler monkeys!

Venado Caves Tour (Spelunking) For those who don’t mind getting wet and muddy, this fascinating underground adventure will take you through a labyrinth of passages and chambers in which you will see an interesting rock formation called, “La Papaya,” stalactites, stalagmites, bats, spiders and proof that the caves were at one time at the bottom of the ocean.

Celeste River & Tenorio Volcano A legend tells that after god was done painting the sky, he washed the brushes in this river. Once at the Tenorio Volcano National Park we start the hike through the Forest, several fauna and flora are easily found in this ecosystem. During the hike we visit a magnificent waterfall, just where the river dies with the light blue coloration & hot springs (swimming on dry season only).

Horseback Riding to Fortuna River Waterfall Hike A good combination of horseback with hiking and a beautiful scenery. Docile horse will take us through private farms and forest, with spectacular views of the valley. Then we will descend walking a natural trail to the base of the waterfall. This fantastic area is very quiet and special place to relax and swim for a while.


Expedition to Chato Hill We start with a hike to the summit of Chato’s Hill. At the top we can see the lagoon, then we descend always surrounded by a dense forest where you can see birds, plants, animals, trees and enjoying immense feeling of freedom surrounded by beautiful landscapes of the valley and Volcano. After a delicious snack we walk to La Fortuna Waterfall, we take a refreshing swimming and we get back.

Night Forest Walk A visit to the eco-center at night will afford you the opportunity to see some of the area’s more prominent nocturnal animals in action such as sloth, caimans, spiders, frogs, bats, butterflies and birds and the way these species interact with each other and the vegetation. It’s simply another world!

White Water Rafting Class II - III Challenge yourself as you paddle through fun & safe rolling rapids with names like “Morning Coffee” & “Rock around the Croc” and then play around in tranquil river pools in an isolated rainforest river canyon! And only 30 minutes from La Fortuna! Your professional, experienced bilingual guides will give you a safety talk and paddling instruction, lifejackets, helmets & then you’re off… Hopefully you’ll get to see lots of wildlife like monkeys, sloths and tropical birds such as ospreys, oropendolas and toucans. This unique river trip is the best way to combine adventure and nature.

Biking Tour around the lake Starting every day from La Fortuna and all hotels near Arenal Volcano our OneDay Bike Tours focus in the area around Arenal Volcano National Park and Arenal Lake. Since bikes are not allowed inside the National Park, we use different roads just outside of it. At the end of any tour we can drop you off at the Hot Springs of your choice. Most Hot Springs in the area require a reservation that can easily be arranged through our office without any charge.

Palo Verde National Park and Guaitil Pottery Palo Verde National park it is an exceptional place for birdwatchers and nature lovers in general, a two hours boat trip will introduce us into these important ecosystem, crocodiles, monkeys, iguanas and more wildlife that you ever imagined. After this great opportunity to see wildlife, we take a delicious lunch and we will visit the town of Guaitil traditional pottery artisans.

Combined with a stop on Liberia City for lunch time and shopping.

Monteverde Cloud Forest Experience After driving trough the wide open and semidry scenery of the pacific low lands the green and hilly views will start getting your attention, this means we are getting to the cloud forest of Monteverde, at this place we have the options of either gliding throughout the forest with the Canopy Tour or something less exciting but very educational: walking the Hanging Bridges above the trees, then you choose between the insects or reptiles exhibition and the Hummingbirds Garden.


Nicaragua One Day Tour Nicaragua is a beautiful country owner of a very rich culture and a history full of proud and difficult memories. Our journey starts very early in the morning with a delicious breakfast at Liberia City. At Nicaragua, we can see marvelous lakes, visit the Masaya city to see it´s active volcano; and Granada, a Spanish colonial style city where we have the chance to take a city tour on a horse cart thru it.

Class 3 & 4 White Water Rafting You can combine more than 10 kilometers of rapids with magnificent landscapes surrounded by tropical forest. No experience required but good effort needed it on this world famous class III and IV white water rafting. This challenging river will take the energy out of you, that’s why we will have a very complete and delicious lunch. Our staff will make you feel confident and our modern and certified equipment will let you mount the rapids smoothly.

Canyon Lodge Adventure Combo What a better way to start our journey to Costa Rica than doing our most famous attractions. Let’s begin with some horseback riding in the morning to know the area and admire the Rincón de la Vieja Volcano; and then continue with a nice Canopy Tour thru the open forest and rappel or climbing wall with a magnificent view of a Canyon formation made by the Colorado River. After lunch there is a challenging water tubing trip on the river waiting for us, to finish at the Hot Springs where we will rejuvenate ourselves with the therapeutic volcanic mud and relax a bit from this Adventure Day.


Jaco & Manuel Antonio


Manuel Antonio National Park This national park is one of the most famous in our country due to its wide variety of flora and fauna specimens. The park itself boasts 3 different trails that vary in grade from flat to very steep. One of the highlights of this Manuel Antonio tour is that the park is home to 3 of the 4 existing monkey species in Costa Rica. Half way through the hike you will make leisure stop at the third beach located within the national park. Throughout the hike, you will be able to observe sloths, birds and reptiles as well as admire orchids, butterflies and tropical trees.

Carara National Park This gorgeous natural sanctuary is home to approximately 48% of Costa Rica’s aviary species, making this Manuel Antonio tour ideal for bird watching enthusiasts. There are 2 possible trails to explore each of them about 2 miles in length. One of the incredible highlights of this Manuel Antonio tour is the opportunity to see red macaws flying overhead. Once you have seen all there is to see you will return to base camp where a delicious homestyle lunch awaits you.

Jungle River & Crocodile Adventure This outstanding adrenaline adventure takes you through the marvelous wonders of our rainforest. You will explore the Tarcoles River on our stunning pacific coast. Your guide will point out different kinds of mammals, birds and reptiles that flourish in this mangrove system. Depending on the season you will be able to spot different migratory aviary species. There will be numerous opportunities to take incredible pictures on this tour.


White Water Rafting

Upon arrival you will receive a safety briefing and suit up to hit the rapids. This tour is a challenging experience perfect for seasoned paddlers. With steep drops through the mountains of Quepos and jungle gorges, you are sure to see incredible scenery. Your tour guide is a trained professional in first aid, water rapids rescue and mountain rescue. This river rafting adventure allows you to tame class III rapids. After you finish your run you will be served with a delicious homemade lunch.

Catamaran Adventure You will set sail towards the horizon and cruise over sapphire hued waves. The catamaran will chart a picturesque course departing from Quepos gliding around the back of Manuel Antonio national park.You will pass by panoramas adorned with islands, cliffs and rock formations. You can admire aviary nesting grounds and marine wildlife. Beverages, snacks and barbeque lunch are available onboard the catamaran throughout the trip. After touring the coastline, your captain will set anchor on Bisanz beach where you can take advantage of the pit stop to snorkel at this secluded bay. You are most likely to spot parrotfish, starfish, angelfish and if you are lucky a dolphin!


Monteverde Tours


Tour Reserva de Monteverde Created in 1972, the Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve is one of the most famous in in the world as well as one of the most important private reserves in Costa Rica. The geographical, topographic and climate conditions have conditioned the surprising biodiversity found the Monteverde Reserve. In this forest, we can find four ecological “Live Zones” that give place to different ecosystems for hundreds of species of mammals, birds, butterflies, amphibians, reptiles, insects and arachnids a variety of mosses, vines, other plants and typical trees of the Cloud Forest.

El Bosque Eterno de los niños The Children’s Eternal Rainforest is locate in the Tilaran Mountain range in the North-east of the country with a more than 22,000 hectares of Primary and Secondary Forest as well as areas in regeneration. This reserve has been able to conserve thanks to the support of children, adults, schools and other organizations from over 40 countries around the world. The Children’s Eternal Rainforest is now the biggest Private Reserve in Costa Rica and forms part of the “Biosfera Agua y Paz” of UNESCO.


Tour Típico El Trapiche This tour takes place in a farm with sugar cane, coffee, bananas, plantains, arracache, orange and other plantations. In this tour con will be able to observe the whole process of coffee, after this you will take a ride on a on a Carreta Típica (Typical Oxcart) with ox that will take you to the Trapiche where you can see the process of the “Saca de Guaro” (Making Moonshine liquor) and the process of sugar cane. In this tour you will also have the opportunity to have a taste of the different products made out of sugar cane and a delicious cup of coffee.


Rio Celeste Tours


Ca単o Negro Wildlife Refuge We arrive at Ca単o Negro Wildlife Refuge; this ecosystem is considered to be one of the best place on the continent for bird watching. Also, in addition to an abundance of birds, Ca単o Negro is also home to many other interesting animals, such as sloths, three types of monkeys, caimans, lizards, bats, - more wildlife than what you ever imagine! - And a variety of flora native of the wetlands. Here will begin our boat tour into this incredible ecosystem, the wetlands. Around noon, we will stop at a nice local restaurant for a typical Costa Rican lunch before we start the way back to hotel.

Hiking Tenorio National Park and Rio Celeste

A legend tells that after God was done painting the sky, he washed his brushes in the river that now bears the name of Rio Celeste (Light Blue River).We start the hike through this Humid Forest ecosystem, with the chance to observe various animal species and exuberant flora surrounding us. Along the walk we will discover the magnificent Rio Celeste waterfall, and also the place where the river dyes itself into that amazing light blue coloration and finally the hot springs (bathing allowed only at the springs)


White Water Rafting Class 3 & 4 A beautiful river that rises at Tenorio Volcano at Guanacaste mountain range, it’s pure and white water makes it the best river on Guanacaste area for rafting. You can combine almost 20 kilometers of rapids with magnificent landscapes surrounded by tropical forest. No experience required but good effort needed it on this world famous class III and IV white water rafting. This challenging river will take the energy out of you, that’s why we will have a very complete and delicious lunch. Our staff will make you feel confident and our modern and certified equipment will let you mount the rapids smoothly. Children must be over 12 years old.

Birdwatching Tour The geographical situation, the local weather, the temperature and rain fall of this privately owned Reserve, contributes in making of this ecosystem one of the most bio diverse of the Pluvial Life Zone, to the point of even providing endemic characteristics to several animal and flora species. In this area one may, with luck, spot the rare Tody Motmot or other very rare species such as the Black Faced Ant Thrush. Commonly, can be observed many other bird species such as Tanagers, Toucans, Parakeets, Parrots, Hawks or wood creepers, easily found as we walk the trails or isolated gravel roads used for our excursions, accompanied by fully equipped naturalist tour guides, for a wonderful natural experience.


San José


Poás Volcano & La Paz Waterfall Gardens As you wander the trails of La Paz Waterfall Gardens your senses will delight at the five waterfalls that line the trail. The La Paz Waterfall is the most famous waterfall in Costa Rica where visitors often stop on the road to take photos. But the best waterfalls are actually above the La Paz waterfall along a steep canyon accessed by our safe hiking trails making these five waterfalls the most easily accessible waterfalls in Costa Rica. Combined with a hike to the Poás Volcano National Park, the biggest crater in Costa Rica. Poás is active, but we can’t expect to see a full fledged eruption or even any lava flow here, the activity consists of gases and volcanic sediment ponds tha our guide will point out at the time we are just next to the crater. Into the park it is possible to appreciate a special kind of flora and fauna and the views of the central valley are just spectacular.

Coffee Tour

This Costa Rica coffee tour will show you different cultivation methods and age old brewing techniques. During this educational tour, you will experience firsthand how the plantation employees strive to obtain the perfect balance between nature and science. This fun tour takes you on an up-close excursion of the inner workings of an exemplary plantation highlighted by old traditions and modern technology that merge in an interesting harvesting process.


City Tour

In this tour our experienced guide will take you thru the San Jose City, capital of Costa Rica. We will have the opportunity to spot the most important places of the central city, as the National Museum, National Theater, National Stadium, La Merced Church, and others places of cultural and history interest .Our guide will give you the most relevant information about each place and its historic importance for the Costa Rican nation.


Nosara & Samara


Visit to Guaitil Guaitil is a small Guanacaste community, home to a major craft centers in the country. Where the same process it has been used to do ceramic craft alike to the one used by the Chorotegas (an ancient indigenous group). The trip to Guaitil is combined with a visit to the church of San Blas, Nicoya, the oldest church in Costa Rica; declared as a national shrine in 1923 and now converted into a museum, which houses a collection of 160 pieces including pictures, chandeliers and bronze, silver and copper objects,.

Barra Honda National Park, Hiking & Caves

Barra Honda is a national park, very close to the Tempisque valley. It mainly consists of coral reef aging over 60 million years. Tectonic faulting has uplifted the area from the seabed and rains created underground waterways. The constant dropping of rainwater on calcium carbonate has then created these underground art galleries fancies of nature grown over millenniums of years.


Leatherback and Olive Ridley Sea Turtle Tour

Beach is a protected area, just south of Carrillo Beach, and Ostional Wildife Refuge, just north of Nosara, are home to one of the most amazing phenomenon in the animal kingdom. At these places, thousands of turtles come ashore to nest and lay their eggs.

Snorkeling and Dolphin Watching Tour

Half-day snorkeling in the open waters off the pacific coast. It does not get any better than this. You are almost certain to see dolphins all year round and the occasional humpback whale during the second half of the year. Due to the migratory routes of the sea mammals, the northern pacific is famous for spotting many species of animals. Take advantage and come experience Costa Rica’s ocean wonders.


Transportes Jacamar Naturalist Tours has a wide van fleet, with more than 20 vehicles ranging all sizes, including special vans for long transfers and big buses for circuits. Our vehicles are updated with all permissions and requirements requested by the Costa Rican Government as insurance, RTV (Annual Vehicular Technical Review). Also we our vans count with First Aid Kit, cooler, and extinguisher.

Day: Liberia or San Jose to Arenal

Arrival to the international Airport. Continue to Arenal Area home of the rainforest. Overnight in Arenal Springs Hotel. (D).

2. Day: Arenal Experience the peacefulness of the forest traveling on the Río Frío River with the opportunity to observe many different animals such as monkeys, sloth, iguanas, tortoises, crocodiles and numerous bird species. Our boat doesn’t use a motor so that you can enjoy the sounds of nature as we paddle down the river offering you the best opportunity to take photos. At the end we will share a moment with a Costa Rican Family while eating some snacks home made at their farm. Relaxing hot springs and dinner at night. Overnight in Arenal Springs Hotel.(B, L, D).

3. Day: Arenal We depart at morning time from La Fortuna to La Tigra town, on a four wheel drive to go up to the Pocosol Biological Station of the Children’s Rain Forest, the biggest private reserve of the world, created for children to be a gift to all children of the planet. We meet the park rangers and they give us a small talk about the history of the park. Then we take a hike to a trail into this magnificent primary forest, where we will have the chance of seeing so many species of wildlife and nature. Overnight in Arenal Springs Hotel. (B, L, D).

Day: Arenal to Manuel Antonio

Manuel Antonio is an incredible combination of forest and beach. One of the best destinations for relaxing and admiring beautiful landscapes at the same time. On the way we will see the Tarcoles River where we will take a boat trip down the river to find Guacalillo Mangroves, nesting place of the Scarlet Macaw. On both sides of the river you will see numerous species of birds such as Pelicans, Ospreys, Frigates and Trogons Hacienda Novasar. After lunch continue to Quepos. Accommodation at the hotel Casitas Eclipse or La Foresta (B, L). Note: Carara National Park available, instead of Guacalillo.

Day: Manuel Antonio - South Pacific

In the morning we departure to visit Marina Ballena National Park. The tour starts from Punta Uvita Beach and visits the famous Punta Uvita Whale Tale, Ballena Island, Tres Hermanas Islets and Ventana Sea Caves. During the tour we search for Humpback and Pilot Whales as well as three different species of resident dolphins. When granted the opportunity, you might see and hear the Humpback Whales and observe the acrobatic displays of the dolphins. We also visit the coral and rock reefs to snorkel and observe the wonderful marine wildlife. While cruising in the boat, enjoy the scenic beauty of the coastline of Costa Ballena; observe the diversity of pelagic birds in the Islets and the amazing caverns of Ventanas Beach.


6.

Day: Manuel Antonio

Morning hike at the Manuel Antonio National Park, well known for its beautiful beaches and hiking trails. In 2011, Manuel Antonio was listed by Forbes among the world’s 12 most beautiful national parks. Rest of the day for leisure at the beach or enjoy the resort facilities. (B, L).

7. Day: Manuel AntonioCoast: Marina Ballena National Park Beach or leisure time on your own. (B)

8. Day: Manuel Antonio to the Airport. Transfer to the airport to fly back to home.
