editors message
First off, I’d like to point out that this magazine is a tribute to my favorite local magazine called STATUS. The style of this magazine was inspired by it, so if you liked this, then you should definitely check out STATUS if you haven’t already. Secondly, this particular project: creating a magazine for our desktop publishing and photography class, was practically my ideal, tailor-fit assignment since it’s along the lines of what I want to professionalize in graphic designing. Taking photographs & interviewing people was equally fun and just made the whole production process of this magazine worthwhile. This magazine took a great deal of my time and efforts, nevertheless I enjoyed every minute of it, so I hope you like it. Everything was written, photographed, and designed by yours truly (unless otherwise noted).

what to expect The people I featured in this magazine are just some of the many unique, multi-talented, interesting, outstanding individuals I’ve met and became friends with. In the process of making this magazine, I learned even more about them. They all have a different story to tell that I wanted to share. So I hope you get a kick out of the features and articles just like it did to me. Also, a disclaimer: the ads were only made for the overall legit-look of the magazine. The models are my friends too by the way, so a big thanks and round of applause for them too.

eremae is a strong-spirited young lady who grew up in Dallas, Texas. Experiencing many tough challenges in her past, she has recoiled into a wiser and more sophisticated individual. Mature for her age, Jeremae has started to unfold and create a new name for herself as she came back to the Philippines. The unique sense of style and positive character she carries is something many look up to her for. Get to know Jeremae, URBAN’s Oct. issue cover girl.
My sense of style. I’d say I dress hip, although I add a bit of girly-ness into it. Ragged but decent and classy at the same time! Photography & cinematography. I love taking photos, paying close attention to details. I have a thing for people’s eyes because everyones’ is different & it’s just really interesting. I’m into films as well. I plan to take up filmmaking back in Dallas after my HS grad.
I look up to Tyra Banks. Although we have different styles, she’s definitely my inspiration. I strongly admire her spirit as a person & as a model. She stands by her own opinion & believes in her self. That’s someone to look up to!
I am Jeremae. I’d say I’m an outgoing person. I am optimistic, very encouraging and a bubbly person! My outlook on life. I think life is jam-packed with challenges and hindrances! But there’s not a down-side to it for me. Whether you make mistakes or do good, you can learn from it and that is what builds your character.

I make clothes. I’m not so into the designer or branded stuff. I can’t afford it, so I adapted my own style by altering and creating my own clothes. It says who I am. I think altering & sewing my own clothes makes it unique. My specialty is making tanktops and jackets. I also make necklaces and bracelets. The jacket I’m wearing right now, I made. Same with the necklace. My style. It’s kinda punk-rock with a bit of a hipster vibe and a bit of a skater kind of style too. So it’s punk, meets hipster, meets skater!
My personality. I’m kinda shy at first, but later on start to show my weirdly crazy side. I’m always happy. I like helping the elderly. I helped an old lady when it was raining, she was alone and didn’t have an umbrella. My rule in fashion. Don’t follow the rules. Don’t stick to what society & everyone is used to see. I wear what I want & feel like wearing. I don’t care what others think, as long as I express myself. I can’t leave the house without. Earrings, necklace & a bracelet. I always bring an extra top or jacket so when I suddeny don’t feel what I’m wearing, I can change. Into the future. I want to have my own company related to fashion because I really like making clothes. I also want to have a charity for the elderly & people with disabilities.
Fashion fettish
My fashion commandments. Comfort before anything. Do I feel good? Can I dance in it? And I always keep in mind the words of Coco Chanel, “before leaving the house, take one thing off.”

Why I love fashion. No rules! It’s about breaking & bending them - that’s what makes it exciting. The industry is challenging, competitive & puts your creativity at a high. I love the artisitc atmosphere. It’s never boring.
CENNA CARLOS
I am a fahion designer. Honestly, I only started to take fashion “seriously” about 2 years ago when I took my major subjects. It was more of an interest but it’s no joke. Fashion is a dirty, dirty, business and I love it.

My style. Depends on my mood. I like to experiment and D.I.Y. Monochrome with a pop of color, loose hoodies and sweats, granny fashion, girly (this is rare), vintage finds, my brothers clothes.. Whatever it is, I make sure it’s comfy and I feel good. Oh and can’t forget about the earrings!
Fashion inspirations. Nobody in particular. My style varies, so do the influences. The weather is a biggie. Anyone spunky, funky & edgy. Since I’m a dancer, whenever I go out, I make sure I can get down! I am a dancer. I officially started dancing back in 2006 in HS. Moving back to the Philippines, I continued dancing by founding a hiphop group, “Hoofbeats.” Now I’m a student artist scholar for CSB’s “SBRDC,” a freelance choreographer & do gigs on the side with my other group “Soul Motion.”

ANDREW SUBIELA
22 years old Information Technology, Letran-Calamba I am a photographer. It was around middle school, 15 years old, when my interest clearly formed. Inspired by photography or art books, fashion magazines, & even films! I picked up ideas from cinematography, in terms of techniques like composition, lighting, setting, etc. that is applicable to photography. From there, it’s been an ongoing and endless learning process. Why I love photography. It has this ability to quickly document life at the press of a button. Like a “visual journal” for me & I really get a kick out of being able to recall smallest details of my life from a photo in a particular place & time. You can create art out of one of the most challenging subjects: reality. We don’t always have 100% control of what we’re taking pictures of. We have to work with what we have. I enjoy seeing people’s different perspectives.
I photograph life. Majority of my shots can be divided into portrait/ lifestyle, landscape/nature, street, architecture, and a few show/gig/concert photos. I don’t have a particular subject I stick to, but lately I’ve been shooting portrait/ lifestyle shots with friends & models. It’s fun meeting new people & seeing how each person has their own way of working with the camera. I grew up in an urban environment, so just documenting city life in general has also been a beautiful thing for me. I love music. Music has always been another big part of my life. I really enjoy going to shows to hear my favorite artists/bands play live. I know a bit of the drums, but I wouldn’t exactly call myself a drummer. Indie pop. Block Party Arctic Monkeys, Radiohead and Nujabes. I’d listen to their music when I edit photos and it actually kind of had a subtle effect to it. I am a blogger. Since 3rd yr. highschool, I’ve been a dedicated blogger on tumblr. Seeing all these other amazing photo blogs of random people inspired me to be a blogger too. Why I blog. You get to know people around the world & they get to know you too. I’ve made friends via blogging. I can also express myself. When I’m drained from everything & feel uninspired, I check out the people I follow. They never fail to ignite the spark in me, inspiring me to get out, take photographs, make the most out of my life & just be plain excited about the fact that I’m still breathing.
Try blogging too. If you want an outlet where you can write or post photographs, then blogging is perfect for you! It’s really fun. I like taking photographs. It’s part of blogging. I like to notice the details and capture them. I usally take portraits. I am a dancer. I started dancing elementary years, and continued in highschool years. I style. And now I’m PlustenCrew.

Perks of being a bboy. I’m so blessed to work with these crews. Though I’ve been off-scene for awhile due to studies, they all understand & respect. I’m happy to help motivate & inspire upcoming dancers, not just into dance, but inspiring them to live life is more of it.
Bboying is my life. It revealed how passionate I am. I learned to respect everything in general because we’re just human. As what Zulu Nation always wants us to do; share, love, unity and respect to everyone. And that’s the best thing that has ever happened to me. FunkRoots, was chosen by the Godfather of HipHop himself, Afrika Bambaataa. And that’s the real deal of living with this passion. Taste in music. As a dancer, I can understand music from its roots. I don’t worry much about the genre or artists. I like them all. I respect their talents and their thoughts of sharing it to people. Looking forward. As I continue my studies, I want to have my career as an engineer who’s still dancing in the future!

I am an aspiring film-maker. I can’t say I’m a cinematographer, but I really have a passion for watching all kinds of films eversince I was a kid. This is why I want to be a filmmaker. I am also a creative writer so I see film making as a good way to share my stories and stories of others. That’s why I took up communication arts. My taste on films. At first, I got really hooked on to suspense, horror and thriller movies. But later on, I got more hooked on love stories and romantic kind of films.
I like to write. I was inspired by the works of John Green and Nicolas Sparks. I like to write what I call, “Chick-Lit.” It’s like the counterpart of ChickFLix. There’s something about it that allows people to relate easily. It’s not purely romance but has sense that can capture your attention.
Fashion & photography. I was actually considering taking up fashion design. It’s always been a passion of mine. My sense of fashion depends on my feeling. A mix of girly and boyish probably. I love going through fashion magazines and blogs, especially Tricia Gosingtian, a local fashion blogger and photographer. I also admire Rihanna and Rita Ora’s style, but Tricia is probably my biggest influence in fashion and photography. Taking pictures has always been a hobby for me. I always preferred being the one behind the scenes, rather than the one on the scene. Something I can’t live without. I have this cute keychain that is a two-way earplug. I just love how you can listen to music with someone & it makes the whole listening experience more intimate.
film fad
Film-making’s perks. I’m actually not very good when it comes to expressing myself. I want to become a film-maker because I see it as a way of communicating with others through the movies I make and stories I create. I want to be able to move hearts. It’s a tool for my self-expression. I am a dancer. Aside from film-making and writing, I am also a dancer. I’m a member of Letran Street Dance Crew at school and Beat Mechanics. Someone I look up to. I really look up to my mom, simply because she is a very warm-hearted, and most determined and patient person I know

He gave me a try one time when we went clubbing at the fort. He’s awesome! Taste on music. I’m not so into pop songs, I only use them for mixing. I’m more into indie and old songs. Happiness & stress reliever. I love dancing and watcing movies. I’m not much of a reader but I love reading the bible. It’s so helpful, in every aspect of my life. It’s comforting. My favorite series is also The Bible.
Intimate introvert. I’d say I’m somewhat of an introvert but of course I have a social life. I love hanging out with friends, but after, I feel I just need to be alone. I prefer being with small groups so it’s more close and intimate. Someone I look up to. My sister Zaren. Her life is so inspiring, it’s hard to explain. I’ve just learned so much from her like how to take a stand, handling different situations, etc. Something you should know. I want people to know that if change in life can happen to me because of God, it can also happen to you. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here (2 Corinthians 5:17).
I like reading & writing. The works of Chuck Palahniuk, Paulo Coelho & Robert Greene. I read all kinds of books as long as it gives me more knowledge & wisdom about life. My favorite books are namely Fight Club, The Alchemist, The Zahir and Art of War. I write too. Got a few short stories somewhere that I wrote a long time ago, most of them are for mature readers only.. to understand the complexities of my writing. 10 years from now. I am a traditional artist. Growing up with my dad who’s an artist made me curious about his craft. In my elementary days, my dad would require my brother and I to make 10 drawings a day before we can go out and play. My dad taught me how to weld, mold using different materials, and sculpting. I love to paint. Grade 4 onwards, my interest went to painting, using different kinds of medium like charcoal, oil pastel, chalk pastel, oil paint and acrylic paint.
I make portraits. I’m familiarizing myself with the characteristics of the face, figures of the body and proportion. I like painting detailed subjects. The more challenging, the better! I don’t really like abstract painting because I feel like anyone can do that, but that’s just me. I’m an all-around guy. I have this problem where I can’t seem to focus on one thing. I’m into cooking, landscaping, fishing, carpentry, and sports. I tend to argue with my dad about this. I don’t want to be good at everything, I just like trying new things. But art and music are my main expertise.

good music, where you at? People nowadays listen to music with almost no meaning. Yeah, it has a catchy beat and cool vibe, but can you appreciate the musicality and story behind the rhythm and lyrics of the song? The question is, what exactly is good music? Of course everyone has their own taste and preference but at the end of the day, “good music” all has one thing in common. It’s good music if it makes you feel good. Why listen to a song that makes you mourn or just want to rip you ears off? Good music will always be a debatable topic, but one thing is for sure, that music can unite people, tell a story, and ultimately give you that “thank God I’m alive” feeling.
There are so many genres of music that could entertain anybody’s listening pleasures. But in this modern day, an arguement arising is that music now compared to the old school music in the 19th century, is basically non-sense. Mainstream or pop music has almost become just a bunch of club music, about pointless things like money, cars, drugs, sex and other related stuff. Majority of people now, from different generations, agree that the music before is alot better than the music now. But hey, who are we to judge. Music is music. It’s a good topic to talk about, so tell us what you think. Do you agree with the majority? Where can you find good music? We want your opinions.

MAVERICK DOLOT
19 years old HRM, Letran-Calamba I play bass guitar. I started playing when I was in grade 5, influenced by my parents. Now I’m in a band, playing at random gigs just around town. I like all kinds of music, but I’m really into punk rock, pop and hip hop. I am a bboy. Bboy-ing is how I started dancing. I love dancing because it allows me to express myself and show what I can do. As of now, I’m a member of Hoofbeats, Plusten and G2P. Dance feels. There’s so much adrenaline pumping in me when I perform. Everything just fades away and it’s an overwhelming feeling. I can’t describe it but it’s what I live for.
Life lessons as a dancer. I definitely learned how to work with others as a team. I became more socialized with others. When you dance it’s like an addiction. When you learn something new, you just can’t stop. It’s not about trying to be better than anyone else, but it’s about being better than yourself. I can’t live without. My cellphone. Money of course. My music and a handkerchief. I never leave the house without those things. Looking forward. In the future, I can see myself still dancing and playing music, but not forgetting what I studied in college. I want to be a manager of a local prestige hotel someday.

My guitar is like my comfort blanket. I love the guitar because I don’t suck at playing it and I can hide behind it when I perform. My brother took interest in instruments and I got jealous and copied him, learning from youtube videos. I can also play other instruments like the piano, xylophone, beat box and bamboo flute (if that counts).
I make music. Torn between RnB and standards. The music I listen to is really different from what I write and play. My songs are like stories based on experience, molded by influences and created by God. I personally think my songs are little school girl songs. I guess it just shows who I am. I love John Mayer. He’s my husband but he doesnt know it yet. His musicality is out of this world, he plays guitar as if it’s as easy as breathing. His songs always finds a way to make the melodies and lyrics become one. In the future. I want not to be a front act or back up singer anymore but the actual artist that people come to watch perform live.

I love music. I play and listen to music on my good and bad days. You’ll find me listening to pop, punk and alternative punk rock. My favorite bands are All Time Low and Paramore. My idol. Jack Barrakat from All Time Low.
What I do. I usually play video games all day if I’m not listening/playing music. I also like to go to coffee shops with friends and make fun of other people. First impressions. People usually think I’m some badass kid (which is probably right), but I’m actually really friendly. I tend talk alot at times (well most of the time), and I think I’m pretty awesome and that I’m a legit rockstar. Something you should know. Well besides me being really awesome, cute, and a rockstar.. I actually have really badass leadership skills if you can believe.
Besides drumming.
I am also a swimmer, since 20 years old Agri. Eco. Graduate, elemementary days. I like to be updated on news and UP LosBanos hold a big interest in stock I am a drummer. Since 2010, I’ve been a member of a local band called Pathway. Along with three of my brother bandmembers, I play the drums! Perks of being in a band. First, I get to put to use my talent: drumming! Second is spreading good music! And third is the appreciation of people. I am blessed. I honestly never pictured myself & the band to get this far! I thought it would just be a matter of time before we disband & carry on with our normal lives. But God is full of surprises. We have been to places we never imagined.
markets.
First impressions. Most think i”m a snob, but a few think i’m approachable. I’m actually the kind of guy very concerned about my future so I try to be the best I can be wherever, be it in the business world, academe, athletics or music industry. I can’t live without. My phone, wallet, tablet, drumsticks and practice pad. I really can’t! Looking forward.
