TOM KAVANAGH Dwelling The word dwelling refers to a home, or place of refuge. However, it also has another meaning: a lingering focus on a thought, a notion in the mind that often outstays its welcome. These stark minimal photographs show domestic commodities that are both functional and decorative. Mass-produced and widely distributed, they can be bought by most people in high-street shops. However, each item holds unique purpose, meaning and memory for an individual who has lived with them. Loaded with nostalgia, the photographs encourage viewers to dwell on one’s own past, and the objects of daily life within it. Tom Kavanagh lives and works in London and has been practicing photography for over 10 years. He graduated from London Collage of Communication in 2008. Tom has been in a number of publications and often contributes to magazines such as Dazed & Confused and TANK magazine. Also Tom has been in a number of group and solo exhibitions and has 2 self published books.

CHRISTIAN KRAATZ WE REFUSE TO BE ENEMIES We Refuse To Be Enemies shows the effects of exterior influences forming identity. Beautiful landscape and daily life photographs putting the focus on how a suppressed Palestinian Family resists peacefully in order to keep their farmland which they conceive as their mother. The Nassar family are faced with Israeli destruction orders, road blocks and denial of access to electricity and drinking water. Regardless of owner-ship documents dated back to 1916 they have been struggling to prove their right to occupy this land for 18 years. Nevertheless the family fights these oppressions in a very impressive way. Straight after their motto We Refuse To Be Enemies. They contest Military orders at the court, built cisterns to collect rain water and invite people from all around the world for an open dialogue and encounter.

Christian Kraatz was born and raised in the former German Democratic Republic in 1980. His artistic skill have been influenced by German artist Kai Simon. After five years of collaboration Christian started to do his own exhibitions and worked as a freelance photographer. Since 2009 he is living and working in London. Concentrating on the subject identity. In July 2010 he started to work on the series We Refuse To Be Enemies and founded 3is3identity a platform for artists displaying diverse approaches to the topic identity. TIM DEUSSEN Homeless These homeless’ portraits where taken in New York in 1993 in collaboration with the American photographer Brian Woods. In the early 90s there where many homeless people living in New York. Most of them preferred the anonymity of the big city over the greater US, where they would have been hassled and sent away by police more often. Society does not want to see homeless people, but they are there, reminding us of the hardships of live that anyone can encounter in times of economic, social or personal uncertainty. This ambivalent view society has on homeless people is reflected by the portraits’ formal quality. Two portraits where taken of each person. One of them with the portrayed looking straight into the camera, the other one as a side profile. This is the typical way mug shots are being taken when a criminal is arrested. On the other side the portraits are photographed in front of a black back drop, taking them out of the context of the street where the homeless live. As the beholder, one gets an uncanny feeling when looking at these portraits and sensing the hardship that carved itself into the faces and their expressions, but yet one is unable to determine what happened to these people in their lives. By taking them out of the street context, they are shown as the people they are, no matter which streets they are living on. The photos from the series of homeless are not for sale. Tim Deussen was born on the 1st of May 1968, in Germany. He studied photography at the New York University. Since his graduation with an MA Degree in 1996, he participated with his photo and video works in numerous exhibits, among them “Show your Wound” at the Goethe Institute in Tel Aviv, “The means of Art” at Kunsthaus Dresden, “Easy Transport” at the Museum of contemporary art in Skopje Macedonia, and several exhibits in Berlin where he has his studio and works as a freelance photographer. In his art photography Tim Deussen follows three different strains: poetic abstraction, political interpretation, and documentary realism. Poetic abstraction: Consists in a series of photos focussing on the abstract aspects of photography. A scene is reduced to its essential play of light and form; opening a window to specific views that photography can have on the world. Political interpretation: In his staged photographs Tim Deussen reflects on historical events that have shaped cultural heritage. His recent series “Protocols” was inspired by the reading of the book “Vernehmungsprotokolle”, written by the East German author Jürgen Fuchs after his release from prison to West Germany.Therein he has described very intensely his experiences during his 9 month imprisonment, in the mid 1970s, when he was held captive by the Stasi, the State Security, in the GDR high security prison in Berlin-Hohenschönhausen, being a victim of torture and endless interrogations. He transcribed from memory those interrogations, thus the title of his book. It is a record of the methods of psychological torture used by the Stasi. Documentary realism: In his documentary photos Tim Deussen focuses on the moment taking place in front of the camera. The series of homeless people presented in the exhibit at Strand Gallery works with the language of documentary realism.

SIMON SLIPEK My Heart Changes With History My Heart Changes With History is a long term project which shows street life in metropolises. It contrasts and connects but also dares to challenge the observer. It all started in 2010 in New York home to many Immigrants and mirror of the American dream. A year later the project went on in Berlin. Like no other city it changed so much in the last century. It has had what is perhaps the most dramatic and difficult history of all European cities. Berlin is not beautiful but its fascinating, it gets under your skin. The appeal of the city lies in its history, of course, but also in the speed with which Berlin reinvents itself. The photographs are not just a document of everyday life but also transport the brio of its inhabitants. With an honest visual language Simon Slipek tells about the real life in these cities.

German photographer Simon Slipek was born in Hannover in 1983. After his apprenticeship at Akademie fuer Photografie in Hamburg he went on to Ostkreuzschule in Berlin and graduated successful as a student of Professor Ute Mahler in 2010 . Simons photographs are regularly on display. In 2010 he received honourable mentions by the Anne-Bierman Preis for his series Ein Lied der Sehnsucht.
