SUE LOVEGROVE WRITING THE SKY
SUE LOVEGROVE WRITING THE SKY 06 JUNE TO 27 JUNE 2014
Writing the sky My paintings over the last few years have been about my experiences visiting wild and remote islands off Tasmania’s coast. It is the wildness, extreme weather and unique light that attracts me to these places. It is also where the vast ocean creates its own special theatre for clouds. This current group of paintings Writing the sky, focuses on the abstract forms of clouds that I have collected in my head over the years. The way they take shape and then dissolve into scribbles, explosions and loops. I imagine a continuous line drawing following a cloud contour as it constantly shifts and changes shape forming a cloud calligraphy - like writing the wind and weather in the sky. I also think of these lines as metaphors for states of being. Quietly alluding to ‘The Cloud of Unknowing’ a 14th Century religious text that presents a series of meditations on emptying out the mind - ‘a cloud of forgetting’. Sue Lovegrove May 2013
