TOKYO POP CULTURE LAB

東京大衆文化センター The concept of the Tokyo Pop Culture Lab metaphorically expresses the notion of learning and research as a process of cracking open existing ideas in an attempt to understand its internal workings. The building as an existing entity is split into two volumes, creating a void in between as a space to be filled by the developments of new ideas and trends. This void is supported by the supergraphic structure of “文化”, a homage to Japanese Kanji for culture. The geometry of the floors consist of an undulating surface of undefined boundaries to encourage interaction between programs whilst maintaining separation. The void space is articulated to create a featured series of interrelated programs: 1. A lobby space that can also be utilised as an temporary exhibition extension or a forum with seating that expands into lectures and the mezzanine 2. Workshops with views towards lecture screens and exhibitions 3. Cafe placed adjacent to public seating for convenience when forums or lectures are in session Lecture rooms are enclosed by a retractable wall which opens to welcome the public into lectures or alternatively become expanded seating for lobby space activities. When lectures are in progress, these walls close and become digital screens facing into the lobby, allowing people to view the lectures from workshop classrooms, exhibition spaces or from the street. Vertical circulation is achieved using the supergraphic structural members as stairs and lifts. Program interaction is exemplified in the promotion of learning, where the vertical staircase aid in linking the library, workshops and industry/academic spaces to maximise collaborative multi-disciplinary output .
