‘Pure evil’ in Las Vegas

PATCH - After the shooting in Las Vegas killed at least 50 people, Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe offered condolences to the victims and families in the worst shooting in modern history. “Dorothy and I are heartbroken by the tragic mass shooting in Las Vegas. We pray for those involved but that is not enough. Time for change,” McAuliffe said via Twitter.

The shooting left more than 58 dead and 400 injured after a man fired upon those gathered for a country music festival after 10 p.m. on Sunday. Country star Jason Aldean was on stage and had been performing for about 20 minutes when shots rang out at the Route 91 Harvest Country Music Festival. The incident has already passed last year's Pulse nightclub shooting in

Orlando that saw 49 people killed and 58 injured. The barrage lasted for about 30 seconds, and then there was a pause before the shot started again. Police believe the shots came from a room on the 32nd floor at the Mandalay Bay, which overlooked the music festival. Stephen Paddock, 64, of Mesquite, Nevada, was identified as the shooter and killed himself before officers

entered his hotel room, according to Las Vegas Sheriff Joe Lombardo. He had no previous run-ins with law enforcement other than traffic violations, Lombardo said. President Trump addressed the nation just before 11 a.m. ET on Monday. The gunman “brutally murdered more than 50 people and wounded hundreds of others,” Trump said. “It was an act of pure evil.”

NRA plans to roll out pro-gun ads in Virginia despite Las Vegas mass shooting tragedy The mass shooting of hundreds of people in Las Vegas, the worst in American history, won’t stop the National Rifle Association from rolling out a massive pro-gun ad campaign in Virginia in the run up to the gubernatorial election, according to a Washington Post reporter. Fenit Nirappil tweeted Monday morning that the NRA, a nonprofit organization that advocates for gun rights, has booked “more than $750k in airtime in Virginia through Election Day.” Later, he added that an advertising firm and Richmond television station have confirmed that the ads were supposed to start Tuesday, but have

been delayed until Oct. 10. At least 58 have been killed and more than 500 wounded after 64-year-old Stephen Paddock unloaded round after round from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay casino onto a crowd of concertgoers outside, police say. He later reportedly committed suicide as police closed in on his location. Meanwhile, NRA spokeswoman Dana Loesch taunted Twitter users calling her “evil” and directing vulgarities at her, while criticizing people for making a political statement out of the tragedy. Ralph Northam, the Democratic gubernatorial candidate, said in a

statement that he was “devastated and horrified” by the shooting, but stopped short of advocating for gun control. Ed Gillespie, his Republican opponent, tweeted that he was “praying for victims and all those affected by this act of evil.” Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and her husband Captain Mark Kelly were to campaign for Northam in Northern Virginia Monday but the event was cancelled following news of the Las Vegas shooting. Giffords, who was shot in the head at a 2011 constituent meeting in Tucson, called on her former colleagues once again to have the “courage” to address gun violence.

New poll shows Virginians strongly favor policies that make housing more affordable The Campaign for Housing and Civic Engagement (CHACE), a statewide network of housing advocates spearheaded by the Virginia Housing Alliance and the Virginia Poverty Law Center working to elevate housing issues for the 2017 elections, revealed the results of a statewide public opinion survey on housing and energy efficiency issues conducted by the Judy Ford Wason Center for Public Policy at Christopher Newport University. The poll’s findings demonstrate that, by a wide margin, Virginians want a full spectrum of housing opportunities for all their neighbors. 82 percent of voters strongly believe that people who work in their community should be able to find a home there. 56 percent of voters agree that housing affordability is vital to their community’s economic success. 58 percent of voters also believe that ending homelessness is an important government priority. “The results of this statewide poll demonstrate exactly what we suspected when we decided to launch the CHACE campaign: Virginians recognize how crucial safe, affordable, energy efficient housing is not only for themselves but for their neighbors as well,” said Christie Marra of the Virginia Poverty Law Center. Sim Wimbush, executive director of the Virginia Housing Alliance, added, “[VHA] believes that having access to safe and stable homes is vital for all Virginians. It’s encouraging to see with these poll results that Virginians agree and support our belief, recognizing the value of being part of vibrant communities that contain a variety of housing opportunities that can meet a wide range of family budgets.” “We started CHACE to remind everyone running for office this year that people across Virginia know that when a community can provide quality housing to people at all income levels, from the nurse’s aide to the police officer to the recent college graduate, it enriches the

Christie Marra entire community,” said Marra. “It is my hope that our elected leaders in the General Assembly heed the clear call of voters on these housing issues and prioritize them accordingly in their work and in the state budget,” said Wimbush. This public opinion poll is the first statewide effort to ask Virginians their thoughts on housing, homelessness, and policy solutions. 509 registered voters were interviewed between Sept. 3 10. Questions revolved around the Campaign’s three policy priorities: increasing funding for the Virginia Housing Trust Fund, expanding energy efficiency programs, and ensuring support services are available for individuals exiting homelessness. The margin of error for the poll is +/- 4.3 percent. About 78 percent of those surveyed said they were supportive of the Virginia Housing Trust Fund, a program that works to preserve and create new affordable rental housing in the state and to alleviate homelessness across Virginia. Respondents overwhelmingly supported the continued use of the Housing Trust Fund to address homelessness (80 percent) and supported the use of the fund for “aging in place” modifications that help Virginians remain in their homes as they get older (87 percent). Voters were also very supportive of mechanisms to expand residential

energy efficiency programs, which help families save money and reduce overall demand for new energy. About 89 percent of Virginians favor holding energy companies accountable by requiring them to meet energy saving goals for their customers. Over half (61 percent) of those surveyed are also willing to pay a 50 cent surcharge on their utility bill to help fund weatherization and energy efficiency programs. Virginia legislators, housing advocates, and energy efficiency experts shared their reactions to the results, reflecting on the importance of housing and the positive impacts housing policies and initiatives have had on their clients and constituents. “Access to decent, affordable housing is a critical bipartisan issue facing many Virginians today. Not only is it important for family security, stable housing is the cornerstone of a healthy community,” said Del. Chris Peace (R) of Hanover. “I am proud to serve on the House Appropriations Committee, which has supported funding to the Housing Trust Fund over the last few years, recognizing how housing is a pivotal economic engine as well.” Del. David Bulova (D) of Fairfax said that safe, affordable housing is at the core of quality of life. “It affects almost every aspect of society, including our economy, transportation, health care, education, and the environment,”

said Bulova. “It is not surprising that Virginians recognize this fact and overwhelmingly support initiatives to address housing affordability. As a member of the Housing Commission, I have seen how investments in the Virginia Housing Trust Fund have been used to provide a safety net for families on the verge of becoming homeless and to functionally end homelessness among veterans ... However, much remains to be done.” Laura Lafayette, chief executive officer of the Richmond Association of REALTORS®, said, “Our most successful neighborhoods are the ones that have abundant housing opportunities. This poll shows Virginians clearly understand why we need to work together to guarantee that every person, whether they’re a firefighter, nurse, or teacher, can live affordably in the same community they contribute to each day.” Michelle Krocker, executive director of the Northern Virginia Affordable Housing Alliance explained that, “Virginia Housing Trust Fund dollars helped nonprofit developers in Arlington and Fairfax County leverage private debt to create housing for very low income families. In a high cost area such as Northern Virginia, this housing would not have been possible without investments from the Housing Trust Fund.” Connie Staudinger, president of the Virginia Association of Housing and Community Development Officials (VAHCDO), stated, “The statewide poll results are encouraging and strongly underscore the desire to continue the Virginia Housing Trust Fund. VAHCDO members work every day to house the most vulnerable in our communities. While affordable housing development and preservation is reliant on multiple funding sources, chronic underfunding at the federal level has been a major challenge. AG launches anti-violence campaign, RPV doesn’t approve Virginia Attorney General Mark R. Herring (D) and the city of Richmond recently launched “Respect Richmond”, what they call “an innovative” campaign to reduce gun violence and homicides in the city. The campaign will use marketing and advertising strategies to target anti-violence and anti-retaliation messages to those at highest risk of committing gun violence or being a victim of gun violence, and the broader Richmond community. The campaign is launching with a dedicated website and an innovative messaging push on social media, websites, and gaming networks. The ads can be adjusted and deployed in real time to target areas where violence has recently occurred and where retaliation may be more likely. Ads will also be strategically placed on websites, social media accounts, and YouTube channels most likely to be seen by Richmonders at risk of committing an act of gun violence or being a victim. “We have to break the cycle of violence and retaliation in Richmond that is claiming too many young lives, exposing too many children to the trauma of violence, and causing too many Richmonders to live in fear in their own neighborhoods,” said Herring. “The ‘Respect Richmond’ campaign is going to make people slow down and think before they reach for a gun or let an online dispute escalate into real world violence. I really appreciate and

thank Mayor [Levar] Stoney, said [Police] Chief [Alfred] Durham, [Richmond] Commonwealth’s Attorney [Michael] Herring, and everyone in Richmond who has bought-in to this campaign and provided incredible input and feedback. I’m proud to be launching this campaign with partners who are innovative, supportive, and committed to tackling this problem head-on, and I look forward to seeing some of our other projects come to fruition in the near future.” Meanwhile, the Republican Party of Virginia released a statement saying the initiative would be “laughable” if the problems facing Richmond weren’t so dire. “...Virginians are dying in the streets of Richmond, and Mark Herring’s solution is to put some ads on Facebook and YouTube,” noted RPV in its statement. “If you weren’t convinced that Mark Herring simply wasn’t up to the job of protecting Virginians before, [this] announcement should leave no

doubt. “Instagram posts won’t stop violence. Locking up those who commit gun crimes will. It has before. Former Richmond Mayor [now U.S. Sen.] Tim Kaine got behind Project Exile, which prosecutes gun crimes in Federal, not state courts. Under the leadership of Mark Herring, those prosecutions have all but stopped,” according to to published reports,” noted RPV, which touted its candidate for attorney general in November, John Adams, a former federal proecutor, as more up to the task for the job of keeping communities safe . “Said simply, we need an Attorney General who will work with the Justice Department to put violent criminals in jail. Social media posts won’t stop the violence. Locking up those who commit acts of violence will,” noted the RPV statement Richmond Mayor Stoney said the city needs to do everything we can to keep communities safe and free from violence. “This provocative digital messaging campaign, strategically designed to discourage gun violence that brings bloodshed and fear to our most vulnerable residents, is just one more tool in the toolbox we need to build a safer city,” said Stoney, a Democrat. “I’m grateful for Attorney General Herring’s engagement on this issue and appreciate his support behind this timely initiative.” City Police Chief Durham also threw his support behind the initiative. “I’m hopeful that this innovative campaign by Attorney General Mark Herring to raise public awareness about gun violence will result in fewer shootings in the city,” he said.

“Seizing illegally-held firearms will only get us so far. We need people to think twice before they pull out a weapon - to understand the consequences of their actions.” The first phase of the campaign includes: - RespectRichmond.com website-A one-stop-shop hosting all of the campaign’s materials, including videos, news updates, statistics, information on reporting crimes, and more. - Digital Ads and Social Media Messaging-These ads will appear on gaming networks, social media and YouTube channels, and websites most likely to be seen or used by the Richmonders who need to hear these messages. The ads can be tailored and targeted to specific audiences in specific neighborhoods in response to an outbreak of violence. The campaign will utilize multiple messages that target: o Individuals at risk of committing or being a victim o Individuals at risk of retaliating with violence o The broader Richmond community The campaign will run through at least the end of the year and beyond, and additional phases will be unveiled in the coming weeks including: Radio ads featuring prominent voices in the Richmond community; billboards; Displays at convenience stores and other high-traffic establishments; and television ads. Herring and his team are also working on additional projects to provide more law enforcement and violence suppression resources, as well as more education and prevention resources, including more intensive work with at-risk young people in Richmond.

Change education for the community HOWARD FULLER & CHARLES COLE III We are two black men separated by 42 years in age. But we are bound by our collective rage about what is happening to our people. We are focused on education where there is more than enough to be angry about. Every day countless numbers of our children do not receive the quality education they must have in order to have even a modicum of a chance to live a decent life in today's world. Yet, when some of us raise our voices and pursue more options for our children, we are accused of supporting "privatization" or doing the bidding of rich "hedge fund" owners or supporting "segregation." But we will not be deterred. As long as educational atrocities keep happening to our children we will seek whatever options there are to help families navigate existing education systems and create new ones that will enable their children to engage in the "practice of freedom." We support any type of school, educational environment or policy initiative that meets the needs and interests of our children. In the same vein we will oppose any policies or learning environments that are hurting our children-whether they are traditional public schools, charter schools or private schools. Let’s be clear about the why As we write this, only 17 percent

of Black students are considered college- and career-ready. According to the NAEP (National Association of Educational Progress), Black fourth-graders represent the largest percentage of students below basic at 49 percent and the lowest percentage proficient at 18 percent and the story gets worse for eighth-graders too. More than half (53 percent) of black eighth-graders nationally are below basic in math. The consequence isn't merely poor test scores for our people, it is about what it represents. When we have drastic low achievement our risk of dying grows. We have both buried students and friends that couldn't read. When the link between low achievement and poor schooling has a straight line to the death and destruction of our people and we can see it clear as day, we will never stop fighting. We make this pledge as free Black men who will not be pigeon holed or intimidated by rhetoric from our opponents and most assuredly we won't be silenced by their tactic of "guilt by association." We say this because those of us who support parent choice are accused of being in bed with Donald Trump. The two of us have been absolutely clear in our opposition to Trump. Our people were fighting for parent choice long before Trump was born. We will not yield on our righteous support for parent choice because this idea is also supported by him

or his administration. We believe there are ways to reach the goals of increasing the power of our people in the educational realm without walking through the fiery gate of the wrong side of history that is Donald Trump. It’s going to take everyone More than ever, like-minded Black folks have to pull together and move as a force in our never-ending struggle to free our children from the so-called “one best system”. In order for that to happen, it is going to take a multigenerational approach, which at various times in our history has been difficult for us to do as a people. In the battle to change education for our community, too often the elders have not provided space and guidance for the generations behind them. There have been times when younger people searching for guidance have had doors slammed in their face. On the other hand elders have sometimes been told their ideas and concerns are no longer of value. The gulf between generations has not served us well in any sphere of struggle and that certainly applies to today's battles in the education space. Those of us who choose to raise our voices for our children must find a way to mesh the wisdom of our elders with the energy and the new insights of our younger warriors. We must

learn how to fight for our cause by forming alliance of necessity with people whose world view we may not share while not giving up our soul. The veracity of the evil created by Trump and his followers has created new challenges to the political philosophy of no “permanent friends and no permanent enemies only permanent interests.” But we will find a way together. The pathway for that to happen must be built on mutual respect that provides the foundation for us to develop new strategies and tactics in our battle to ensure that our poorest families have multiple options for their children. The challenges presented to us by the current poisonous political environment can be our collective moment-our blessing. There’s enough energy, strategy, passion and pain to truly galvanize us across generations to change the reality that parent choice is widespread unless you are poor. This is our battle and we will not desist nor allow it to be hijacked by Trump or anyone else.

Admitting fault

“I’m not above changing or admitting I made mistakes … and looking where I can change to become a better or different person.” The man who said that to me is named Keith Campbell. He works for right-wing websites, and shows up at a lot of rallies around the country: Charlottesville, Berkeley, San Francisco. I first encountered him while covering the recent rallies in Berkeley, California. Campbell was filming progressive demonstrators when things took a turn for the worse. Suddenly, the man who had planned a right-wing rally that weekend showed up. Counterprotesters started to chase him. He made his way to a line of police, and was safe. I was recording the scene for Reveal, when out of the corner of my eye, I saw Campbell go down. Five people – dressed in black with masks on their faces – brutally beat him to the ground. He lay curled in the fetal position. At the time, I didn’t know who he was, what he’d done, or why people had jumped him. But in that moment, I thought, They’re going to kill him. When I saw what was happening, I did something kind of crazy: I ran

over to help. I pushed someone out of the way and dropped on top of Campbell, shielding him with my body. Time seemed to slow in that moment. I braced for a beating that never came. A smoke grenade went off, and the crowd broke up. It turns out other reporters there were rolling video, and the scene of me – a black journalist, protecting a white, rightwing activist – went viral. When it was over, I sat on a nearby curb, adrenaline pumping through my blood, fog from the smoke clouding my eyes. I wondered, How did we get here? Al Letson

With the high likelihood of continued instances of professional football players “taking a knee” while the National Anthem is played during this week’s NFL games, members of the Project 21 black leadership network would like to warn you that continued protests lacking clear intentions are hurting the sport’s reputation as well as the well-being of its sponsors. While fans who have been polled by the media do not necessarily want players fired over their protests, overwhelming majorities want professional athletes to stand respectfully during the playing of the National Anthem. Past protests have been cited as a key factor in fans no longer watching games. Millionaire athletes protesting without a specific goal are testing the dwindling patience of the American people. The NFL has a choice to make, and it’s an easy one... political activism or sports. The American people will

only tolerate one of those so they had best choose wisely,” said Washington, a syndicated talk radio host on the American Family Radio and Urban Family Talk networks and U.S. Air Force veteran who served in an honor guard unit at military funerals. There are ways to sway a community; defiling a national symbol associated with honor, service, sacrifice and bravery isn’t one of them. If the NFL continues to indulge the players, declining ratings and lower attendance at games will become the norm. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and the team owners must man up: choose the fans by ending the protests.” Anger over the players’ protests has trickled down to other businesses that make money through their affiliation with the NFL. Fans are reportedly buying less team merchandise and not going to games (and thus not buying concessions). Bars are refusing to broadcast games. And, in a move that could be costly to the NFL, DirecTV has let some customers cancel their premium “Sunday Ticket” game packages. Sponsor boycotts are also being organized. We live in a free country where people have a right to free speech. Having said that, there’s a responsibility to use it wisely. I believe Colin Kaepernick and other NFL players have a right to kneel when the National Anthem is played. But the flip-side to this coin is that fans don’t have a duty to spend their hard-earned money on the NFL if they feel our country is being disrespected in any way

- even by a peaceful protest such as kneeling during the National Anthem. Furthermore, team owners who are fully aware of the financial ramifications shouldn’t be obligated to hire players such as Kaepernick. There’s a time and a place for everything. Professional sports should be a politics-free affair. Stacy Washington Project 21

Time to act

The federal government is charged with the basic responsibility of keeping Americans safe, and the President and Congress have an obligation to address our nation’s gun violence epidemic. Congress cannot continue to sit idly by. The American people are demanding that their elected officials take action to prevent more of these horrendous and widespread incidences of violence in our country from happening again. Addressing this issue must be our top priority and I urge the president and the leadership in Congress to take meaningful action that is long overdue. The House Democratic Gun Violence Prevention Task Force has made many recommendations that could serve as the beginning of deliberations. Congress could also establish a select committee on this issue pursuant to H. Res. 367, Establishing the Select Committee on Gun Violence Prevention. I and many of my colleagues are ready to work together to make sure these mass shootings are no longer a common occurrence in our society. Rep. Bobby Scott

Suicide remains a taboo topic in America’s churches A third of churchgoers have lost a family member or a close acquaintance to suicide and the majority of Protestant senior pastors believe their church is equipped to assist someone who is threatening suicide, yet few choose to seek help from the church before taking their own lives, a new study by LifeWay Research has found. Eighty percent of senior pastors say their church can intervene with someone who is suicidal, but only 4 percent of churchgoers who have lost a close friend or family member to suicide say church leaders were aware of their loved one’s struggles, shows the study, which

surveyed 1,000 Protestant senior pastors and 1,000 Protestant and nondenominational churchgoers who attend services at least once a month. “Despite their best intentions, churches don’t always know how to help those facing mental health struggles,” said LifeWay Research executive director Scott McConnell. Suicide is the second leading cause of death for Americans ages 15 to 34 and the fourth leading cause of death for those 35 to 44, notes the study, sponsored by the American Association of Christian Counselors, Liberty University Graduate Counseling program, the Liberty University School of Medicine, and

the Executive Committee of the Southern Baptist Convention. The study found that about a third of the suicide victims attended church at least monthly during the months prior to death. Yet only 8 percent of those friends and family say church members or church leaders knew of their loved one's struggles. While 86 percent say their church would be a safe, confidential place to disclose a suicide attempt or suicidal thoughts, churchgoers are aware that friends and family of a person who dies by suicide can be isolated from the help they need because of the stigma of suicide, the study adds. More than half of churchgoers say

people in their community are more likely to gossip about a suicide than to help a victim’s family. “Suicide in our culture has for too long been a topic we are afraid to discuss,” said Tim Clinton, president of the American Association of Christian Counselors, in thestudy’s report. “Our prayer is that this research will start a national conversation on addressing the suicide pandemic in our nation, and we started by assessing the church’s perspective on and response to the issue. We need a clinically responsive approach that gives the gift of life back to those who feel filled with emptiness.”

more opportunity, more hope, more prosperity to more people than any nation that has ever existed in the history of mankind.” The 65-year-old had particularly strong words for the Baltimore Ravens and Jacksonville Jaguars players who took a knee or sat during the playing of the U.S. anthem before their game in London recently and then stood for the playing of the United Kingdom’s anthem. “Those of you who won’t stand for our flag or won’t stand for our national anthem, who hate our country so much, just leave,” Jackson

demanded. “You sports figures have enough money. You can just leave. Renounce your American citizenship and go somewhere else. Go find the country that you think is so just and live there and leave us alone. Although the anthem protest movement started in August 2016 with former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick protesting police violence against blacks, Jackson claims that “there is no epidemic of police brutality against black people.

Va. pastor: NFL anthem protests ‘not a black thing’ SAMUEL SMITH

CP - Virginia Bishop E.W. Jackson, who’s known for his conservative political activism, has lambasted the NFL for allowing its players to “disrespect” the United States by protesting during the playing of nation anthem before games. Jackson, who heads the nonprofit coalition of conservative black pastors called S.T.A.N.D. and runs Exodus Faith Ministries in Chesapeake, posted a video to his Facebook page to voice his “disgust” with players who protest during the singing of the “Star Spangled Banner” in order to shed light on police brutality against blacks. “I want you to notice. Look very closely. I am black. I am an American of African descent. My great grandparents were slaves and then sharecroppers in Orange County, Virginia. But let there be no mistake. I love my country,” said Jackson, a Marine veteran and a former Republican nominee for lieutenant governor of Virginia. “I am proud to

be an American. I love that flag. I love our national anthem, and I am black. “So this is not a black thing. This is a leftist thing. This is a racial obsession thing," he continued. “Trying to make this into a black/ white thing, it is not. I can tell you, there are plenty of black people across this country who love our country, love our flag, and are disgusted by this display of antiAmericanism and hatred for our country and simply don’t support it not one bit.” Jackson said if it were not for the “wonderful free market system of the United States of America,” professional athletes would not have the opportunities they are afforded. “You would not have millions of dollars, you would not live in a mansion, you would not drive RollsRoyces and Lamborghinis, you would not be partying at these expensive night clubs and doing whatever else it is you do,” said Jackson. “You can only do that because of the wondrous nation we have that has given

Tears, prayers as Las Vegas mass shooting unfolds FREDDIE ALLEN Las Vegas authorities have identified Stephen Paddock, a 64 year-old man from Mesquite, Nevada, as the gunmen in one of the deadliest mass shootings in United States history. During a brief press conference Monday morning, Clark County Sheriff Joseph Lombardo told reporters that more than 50 people were killed and more than 400 people that were wounded during the attack were transported to local hospitals, according to The New York Times. Police have determined that Paddock fired on the crowd of roughly 22,000 attending a country music festival from his room on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino Sunday night. “Online video of the attack outside the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino showed the singer Jason Aldean performing outside at the Route 91 Harvest Festival, a three-day country music event, interrupted by the sound of automatic gunfire,” The New York Times reported. “The music stopped, and concertgoers

ducked for cover.” Authorities haven’t reported anything about Paddock’s motive; not much is known about the weapons used in the attack, although some experts have speculated that multiple firearms were used, including a highcaliber, automatic rifle. Police have reported that Paddock died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. According to NBC News, “The brother of Las Vegas gunman Stephen Paddock was stunned to learn Monday that his relative was the suspected perpetrator of the largest mass shooting in modern American history. Paddock, who lives in Orlando, said his brother has retired to Mesquite, Nevada and spent his time at the hotels, going to shows and gambling.” During an interview with NBC News, Paddock said that his brother, “was just a guy” and that the family was “completely at a loss.” Monday morning, President Donald Trump tweeted, “My warmest condolences and sympathies to the victims and families of the terrible Las Vegas shooting. God bless you!”

Lin-Manuel Miranda, the American composer and playwright of the award-winning play “Hamilton,” also took to Twitter to share condolences for people affected by the tragedy in Las Vegas. “Heartbroken by the news out of Las Vegas,” Miranda said. “Praying for those of us waiting for news from loved ones who went to hear live music on a Sunday.” During an interview with MSNBC, Danny Tarkanian, a Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate from Nevada said that the attack was “the worst fear of anybody who has lived in Las Vegas.” Jamelle Bouie, the chief political correspondent for Slate.com, questioned why authorities hesitated to call the mass shooting an act of terrorism. “That Las Vegas authorities have ruled out terrorism at this early stage is another example of how the idea has all but been racialized,” Bouie tweeted. Writer and social media activist Shaun King suggested that the shooter’s “whiteness” prevented authorities from calling him a terrorist, even though he “conducted

the deadliest mass shooting in American history.” As some took to social media calling for the mass shooting to be labeled an act of terrorism, others used the tragedy to call for stricter gun control. Still, most social media users continued to share sympathy and prayers for the concertgoers and their families. “Don’t even know what to say,” R&B singer Trey Songz tweeted. “To be in Vegas while this is happening, brings a pain to my heart. My team and I are safe Thank God! Prayers up.” NBA superstar Isaiah Thomas tweeted, “Prayers up for the victims & families of the Las Vegas Shooting! #PrayForVegas.” Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis, Jr., the president and CEO of the National Newspaper Publishers Association offered prayers and sympathy for those who suffered in the attack, while calling for a deeper conversation about the role that guns play in American society. “NNPA affirms heartfelt condolences to families impacted by senseless murders in Las Vegas,” Chavis said on Twitter. “End gun violence!”

Bishop E.W. Jackson

data, a higher total percentage of blacks are killed by police than the percentage of white people killed by police officers. “White people make up roughly 62 percent of the U.S. population but only about 49 percent of those who are killed by police officers,” The Washington Post reports. “AfricanAmericans, however, account for 24 percent of those fatally shot and killed by the police despite being just 13 percent of the U.S. population.” However, Jackson reasons that the disproportionate number of blacks killed by police is due to a disproportionate number of blacks who are involved in violent crimes. “Just look at the Bureau of Justice statistics. That’s the fact,” he said. “Black men commit a disproportionate amount of violent crimes. You might not like to hear that but it’s the truth.” Jackson, a Trump supporter, continued by agreeing with Trump that NFL owners should fire players who protest the national anthem. He also said that he believes NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell should be fired. He also argued that it was

not Trump who divided the country, “Colin Kaepernick and the idiots who followed him” did. “I might not have expressed it quite that way, but I am glad somebody, and I am glad it was the president of the United States who stood up for what I am feeling,” Jackson said of the president’s remarks at the recent Luther Strange campaign rally in Alabama. Although many who feel that the NFL anthem protest is disrespectful favor Trump speaking up for their beliefs, NFL players, including those who choose to stand for the national anthem, felt as if Trump’s comments at the campaign rally in Alabama were a “direct attack” on their brotherhood. “We felt, as many others did, that this was a direct attack on our brotherhood,” said Christian Baltimore Ravens tight end Benjamin Watson in a televised interview. “Even to imply that we don't have a right to express ourselves in any way, whether you agree or not, is something that we really took to heart.”

(from page 8) “If you actually want to take a cold hard look at the data, the actual facts, there is no such thing. There might have been in the 1950s, it might have been in the 1960s, but its not in 2017.” Jackson pointed to data that suggests twice as many white people are killed in police confrontations than black people each year. As The Washington Post found via a real-time database launched in 2015 to track fatal police shootings, over 732 white people have been shot and killed by on-duty police officers during an 18-month timespan. Meanwhile, 381 of those killed by onduty cops were black and 382 were of another race. “Twice as many white people are killed in confrontations with police,” Jackson said. “But you won't hear about that from the mainstream media because they are interested in pursuing this narrative of racial division.” Jackson argued that when there are over 2.7 million blacks arrested every year, just under 400 being

killed in an 18-month time span is a minuscule percentage. “I am not saying that no police officer has ever done anything wrong and that no police officer has ever behaved racially. I am not saying that,” he added. “I know better than that. What I am saying that is statistically, there is no epidemic of police brutality. There is epidemic of black-on-black crime and murder. That’s the problem but you don’t want to talk about that.” According to The Washington Post’s

Family of missing Virginia teen mourns her death FROM WIRE REPORTS Human remains found behind a church in Charlotte are those of Ashanti Billie, a Virginia woman who earlier this month went missing from a military base in Virginia, authorities said Saturday. “It is with deep regret that I inform the community that Ashanti Billie has been located, deceased, in Charlotte, North Carolina,” said Martin Culbreth, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Norfolk division. “I, along with the entire investigative team, offer our most sincere condolences to the Billie family, especially Ashanti’s parents Brandy and Tony. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.” Billie, 19, had been missing since Sept.18, when she didn’t show up for work at a Blimpie sandwich shop on the Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story in Norfolk, or culinary classes at the Art Institute of Virginia Beach. The Mecklenburg County Medical Examiner’s Office and the CharlotteMecklenburg Police Department identified Billie’s remains, which were discovered Friday behind a church more than 300 miles from where she went missing. Shortly before 5 a.m. on Sept. 18,

Billie drove her cream-colored Mini Cooper through Gate One at Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek, where she worked as the Blimpie assistant manager. Just 30 minutes later, her car was captured on surveillance camera leaving the base. The FBI says it doesn’t know whether Billie was behind the wheel, and that nobody saw or heard from her after that. Hours after her disappearance, her cell phone was recovered in a dumpster off the base in a residential area of Norfolk. Five days later, on Sept. 23, her car was discovered in a quiet cul-de-sac in the nearby Ocean View neighborhood. Following a two-week search for Billie, her remains were discovered in Charlotte. CNN affiliate Spectrum News reported they were found behind East Stonewall A.M.E. Zion Church. The FBI had offered a $10,000 reward for information leading to Billie’s location. Blimpie announced it would match the reward, increasing the total to $20,000. Following confirmation Saturday that the remains belonged to Billie, authorities vowed to keep investigating her case. “Our community should know that our work does not end here. Now

Summit to explore solutions to Va. heroin, opioid epidemic The city of Richmond and the counties of Henrico, Chesterfield and Hanover will present a free summit Thursday, Oct. 26 to examine and identify solutions to the alarming rise of heroin and opioid abuse in central Virginia. The community event — titled Revive RVA: Regional Solutions to the Opioid Crisis — will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Greater Richmond Convention Center, 403 N. Third St. in downtown Richmond. The summit is open to the public, but registration is required. To sign up, go to regionalopioidsummit2017. sched.com by Thursday, Oct. 12. Revive RVA will feature keynote addresses by Dr. Robert L. DuPont, president of the nonprofit Institute for Behavior and Health, and Dr.

A. Omar Abubaker, professor and chairman of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry. DuPont, a longtime leader in drug abuse prevention and treatment, served as the first director of the National Institutes of Health’s National Institute on Drug Abuse, from 1973 to 1978, and was the second White House drug chief, from 1973 to 1977. Abubaker, an oral surgeon, has spoken extensively about the heroin and opioid crisis after his 21-year-old son, Adam, died following an overdose in 2014. The summit will continue with breakout sessions examining the issue from different perspectives: medical community and prescribers;

Ashanti Billie our mission is to bring justice for Ashanti, and we will be relentless in our efforts to find who did this to her,” said Culbreth. “We will not rest until the person who robbed Ashanti

of her life, her promise and her future is held fully accountable under the law.” Authorities are asking anyone with information regarding Billie’s death to come forward.

addiction treatment; emergency medical services; law enforcement; state policy; and youth and schools. The program will conclude with a panel discussion led by individuals in recovery and an open dialogue on ways to address the problem. An exhibit featuring more than 15 community service providers and agencies will take place throughout the day. In addition, the summit will offer free training from 3 to 4:30 p.m. on how to administer naloxone following an actual or suspected overdose of heroin or opioids. Naloxone, which is available in Virginia without a prescription, can temporarily reverse the drugs’ toxic effects, allowing time to seek professional medical attention. The training, developed by the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services, is intended for family and friends of someone who is at risk of an

overdose. The class provides handson instruction on the administration of naloxone’s nasal form and is restricted to individuals age 18 and older. Because spaces are limited, registration is encouraged as soon as possible. To sign up, go to surveymonkey.com/r/ZZC6V6X. Participants will leave the session with a complimentary dose of naloxone. Revive RVA comes as the region’s localities and public school systems are taking steps to address the public-safety threat posed by heroin and opioids. The potent, highly addictive drugs, which include prescription painkillers such as OxyContin and Vicodin, are threatening all communities and segments of society. In Richmond, Henrico, Chesterfield and Hanover, the combined number of opioid overdose deaths increased from 51 in 2010 to 79 in 2012 before jumping to 108 in 2014 and 189 in 2016, according to the health department.

Golden Corral faces race discrimination suit STAFF & WIRE A woman who recorded video and posted to Facebook about her experience at the Golden Corral in Roanoke has filed a lawsuit in federal court against the restaurant. Nexus Services, Inc. is funding the lawsuit by Leah Williams, the woman who posted the video of the August incident on social media. Platinum Corral, a franchisee of Golden Corral, provided Aa statement to media saying, “As a corporate policy, we do not provide comment on litigation, threatened or otherwise.” The lawsuit is being funded as part of Nexus’s “Access to Justice” project. In a statement, the company said the case exposes a bleak reality concerning racial discrimination in communities. “Williams and family suffered horrific racism at the hands of management and staff of the Golden Corral restaurant in Roanoke,” noted Nexus. “Falsely accused of stealing chicken wings by an overtly and publicly racist employee, the Williams family were jeered at, treated as common criminals, and after video evidence cleared them of the false allegations, banned from the Golden Corral restaurant in Roanoke without justifiable cause.

“The incident, much of it caught on tape by the Williams family, harkens back to a struggle in this country for fairness in public accommodations. While many believe this fight for justice has been long since won, this incident (and incidents like it that occur every day) demonstrate just how far we need to go to achieve fairness and justice in our communities.” Nexus said it is funding the lawsuit in order to protect the rights of minorities related to public accommodations in Virginia. The company believes that civil rights statutory protections are meaningless if individuals who face discrimination are unable to bring their claims to court. For this reason, Nexus funds litigation where the rights of individuals must be protected. The company has a 24hour hotline for people across the United States, who believe that their civil rights have been violated. “Platinum Corral, the Golden

Corral franchise owner, has a responsibility to lead in this instance,” said Mike Donovan, president and CEO of Nexus Services. “While they’ve had several weeks to investigate this horrific example of racial bias in public accommodations, their social media apologies ring hollow in the face of their continued employment of racists who have demonstrated their frank willingness to use their positions to discriminate against African-Americans in the community. “Platinum Corral and their employees must be held accountable for violating federal anti-discrimination laws.” In August, the restaurant commented on William’s social media post. “After evaluating all of the details, we would like to extend a heartfelt apology to Leah and her family for their experience dining with us yesterday evening. “We recognize this situation was not handled properly and we are taking the appropriate steps internally to assess what we could have done differently while also implementing additional training for our employees. Chronic conditions more common in blacks Heart disease, cancer, diabetes and stroke are among the most common causes of illness, disability and death in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). These chronic conditions and the factors that lead to them can be more common or severe in minorities, including black Americans. For example, black Americans are 40 percent more likely than Caucasians to have high blood pressure, and the rate of diagnosed diabetes is 77 percent higher among African-Americans than Caucasians, according to the CDC. The average life expectancy among blacks is also lower, at 75.1 years, compared to 78.9 years for whites. Services like Chronic Care Management (CCM) can help people

living with chronic conditions coordinate care services and lead to better outcomes and higher satisfaction. If you are a Medicare beneficiary with two or more chronic conditions, ask your doctor about CCM and see if you’re eligible for connected care, including services such as: - At least 20 minutes a month of CCM services. - Personalized assistance from a dedicated health care professional who will work with you to create a care plan. - Coordination of care between your pharmacy, specialists, testing centers, hospitals and more. - Phone check-ins between visits to keep you on track. - Emergency access to a health care professional 24 hours a day, seven

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, anyone with a brain should be concerned about Alzheimer’s and, the license plate is a great way to raise funding for awareness and support. Since 2000, deaths from Alzheimer’s disease have increased by 89 percent. Alzheimer’s is the only cause of death in the top 10 that cannot be prevented or treated and has no cure. This must change. Today, 130,000 Virginians are living with Alzheimer’s, and 400,000 are caregiving for someone who has it. We must effectively prevent and treat Alzheimer’s disease soon and support those impacted by it until researchers achieve this goal. We need your help! Together all Virginians can help us get the required 450 prepaid applications needed to be able to get DMV to produce the ALZHEIMER'S LICENSE PLATE. Amanda Chase, Senator, has agreed to present this license plate bill to General Assembly in January 2018 once 450 applications are collected. Once 1000 license plates are in circulation in the state of Virginia, $15 of the annual $25 cost for the ALZHEIMER’S LICENSE PLATE will be donated to the Alzheimer's Association. *REGISTER TODAY* Online registration available at www.vaendalz.com! (from page 4) improve the energy efficiency of Fund have helped fill that gap and also boosts local economic activity.” Billy Weitzenfeld, executive director of the Association of Energy Conservation Professionals (AECP) of Floyd, VA stated, “AECP has worked in the past to promote some type of Public Benefit Fund (PBF) for Virginia. Public Benefit Funds traditionally involve a very small charge on a utility bill that everyone pays and collectively can add up to a generous revenue stream that is then used to provide annual funding for energy efficiency programs. Everyone pays and everyone benefits. It was great to see in the CHACE public opinion poll that a majority of Virginians would support this. PBF’s have been very successful in other states and because it is an annual revenue stream it has a much more significant impact than one time incentives, grants, and/or rebates.” Elenor Hodges, executive director of Arlingtonians for a Clean Environment, said, “I strongly believe that helping local families

their homes is an important way for them to save money. According to our analysis of utility data in several properties receiving energy retrofits through the Energy Masters program, the residents of the apartments saved an average of $11 per month on their energy bills. And beyond that, by providing education about ways that residents can make simple changes in their daily routines to save energy, the residents were empowered to reduce their energy use and save money throughout their lives.” In a May 2017 press release, the governor announced the names of Housing Trust Fund award recipients, and explained why investment in housing is important for Virginians. “By focusing on the development and preservation of affordable housing, we are strengthening the foundation of our new Virginia economy and giving Virginians the tools they need to access opportunity,” he said. -SUBMITTED REPORT

STDs at record high, urgent need for prevention needed More than two million cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis were reported in the United States in 2016, the highest number ever, according to the annual Sexually Transmitted Disease Surveillance Report released today by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The majority of these new diagnoses (1.6 million) were cases of chlamydia. There were also 470,000 gonorrhea cases and almost 28,000 cases of primary and secondary syphilis – the most infectious stages of the disease. While all three of these STDs can be cured with antibiotics, if left undiagnosed and untreated, they can have serious health consequences, including infertility, life-threatening ectopic pregnancy, stillbirth in infants, and increased risk for HIV transmission. “Increases in STDs are a clear warning of a growing threat,” said Jonathan Mermin, M.D., M.P.H., director of CDC’s National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention. “STDs are a persistent enemy, growing in number, and outpacing our ability to respond.” Epidemic accelerating in multiple populations—impact growing in women, infants, and gay and bisexual men While young women continue

to bear the greatest burden of chlamydia (nearly half of all diagnosed infections), surges in syphilis and gonorrhea are increasingly affecting new populations. Syphilis rates increased by nearly 18 percent overall from 2015 to 2016. The majority of these cases occur among men – especially gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (MSM). However, there was a 36 percent increase in rates of syphilis among women and a 28 percent increase in syphilis among newborns (congenital syphilis) during this period. More than 600 cases of congenital syphilis were reported in 2016, which has resulted in more than 40 deaths and severe health complications among newborns. The disease is preventable through routine screening and timely treatment for syphilis among pregnant women. “Every baby born with syphilis represents a tragic systems failure,” said Gail Bolan, director of CDC’s Division of STD Prevention. “All it takes is a simple STD test and antibiotic treatment to prevent this enormous heartache and help assure a healthy start for the next generation of Americans.” While gonorrhea increased among men and women in 2016, the steepest increases were seen among men (22

Dr. Jonathan Mermin

CDC gonorrhea illustration. percent). Research suggests that a large share of new gonorrhea cases are occurring among MSM. These trends are particularly alarming in light of the growing threat of drug resistance to the last remaining recommended gonorrhea treatment. MSM also bear a great syphilis burden. MSM make up a majority of syphilis cases, and half of MSM diagnosed with syphilis were also living with HIV – pointing to the need to integrate STD and HIV prevention and care services. Essential to confront most urgent threats, upgrade prevention infrastructure CDC uses STD surveillance data and other tools to detect and respond to these evolving threats and new challenges, directing resources where they can have the greatest impact. Targeted efforts include: · Strengthening the congenital syphilis response with focused efforts to improve diagnosis and treatment of pregnant women and ensure prompt treatment of newborns at birth in the ten states hardest hit by congenital syphilis. · Helping state and local health departments rapidly test for drugresistant gonorrhea and quickly find and treat affected individuals, as part of the federal government’s Combating Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria (CARB) Action Plan. · Assisting state health departments and health clinics integrate STD prevention into care for people living with HIV.

Maintaining and strengthening core prevention infrastructure is also essential to mounting an effective national response to the STD epidemic. CDC provides support to state and local health departments for disease surveillance, disease investigation, and health promotion. CDC also issues and maintains testing and treatment guidelines for providers so individuals get the most effective care. Turning back the rise in STDs will require renewed commitment from all players: · State and local health departments should refocus efforts on STD investigation and clinical service infrastructure for rapid detection and treatment for people living in areas hardest hit by the STD epidemic. · Providers should make STD screening and timely treatment a standard part of medical care, especially for pregnant women and MSM. They should also try to seamlessly integrate STD screening and treatment into prenatal care and HIV prevention and care services. · Everyone should talk openly about STDs, get tested regularly, and reduce risk by using condoms or practicing mutual monogamy if sexually active. “CDC uses its national-level intelligence to detect and respond to STD outbreaks while supporting the nation’s on-the-ground workers who are spending each day protecting communities from STDs,” Dr. Mermin stressed.

Fact Check on Ed Gillespie’s ‘sanctuary cities’ D’AANGELO GORE VIEWPOINT Republican gubernatorial candidate Ed Gillespie is airing a misleading TV ad in Virginia that says Democrat Ralph Northam was the “deciding vote” in “favor of sanctuary cities that let dangerous illegal immigrants back on the streets.” It’s true that Northam, as the state’s lieutenant governor, cast a tie-breaking vote against a Republican-sponsored bill banning the establishment of so-called sanctuary cities. But the ad doesn’t tell the whole story of the bill, which ultimately passed the Senate despite Northam’s “deciding vote.” It also ignores the fact that Gillespie himself has said the state doesn’t have sanctuary cities — the very thing that the bill was designed to stop. Gillespie, a former Republican National Committee chairman, is running against Northam in the race to succeed Democrat Terry McAuliffe as governor of Virginia. The ad, titled “Safer Communities,” was released on Sept. 20. “MS-13 is a menace, yet Ralph Northam voted in favor of sanctuary cities that let dangerous illegal immigrants back on the street, increasing the threat of MS-13,” a narrator says, referring to a criminal gang in Virginia and other states. A graphic shown on screen says

Northam’s was the “deciding vote in favor of sanctuary cities.” This isn’t the first time the Gillespie campaign referenced Northam’s vote. On Aug. 30, the campaign released its first ad claiming that Northam “cast the deciding vote in favor of sanctuary cities that let illegal immigrants who commit crimes back on the street.” A day later, the Northam campaign responded with a TV ad saying that Gillespie’s attack ad was “not true.” It’s true, however, that Northam voted against the bill in question. But his was hardly the final say in the matter. The ads from Gillespie’s campaign refer to HB 2000, which was introduced by Republican state Del. Charles Poindexter in January. The one-sentence bill states: “No locality shall adopt any ordinance, procedure, or policy that restricts the enforcement of federal immigration laws.” As lieutenant governor, Northam only votes in the case of a tie in the state Senate. That happened when Thomas Norment, the Republican majority leader, voted with Democrats against the bill, causing a 20-20 split. (Republicans have a 21-19 majority.) After Northam’s subsequent “nay” vote momentarily killed the bill, Norment moved to hold another vote. The bill proceeded to pass when Norment switched sides and voted with his fellow Republicans. The

bill, which also passed in the House of Delegates, was later vetoed by McAuliffe, the Democratic governor. Northam’s team accused Norment of plotting to force the lieutenant governor to make a vote that would later become irrelevant. “Norment declined to comment, and later grinned as a reporter tried to coax out information on whether the Senate majority leader was colluding with the Gillespie campaign to set up the lieutenant governor,” according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch. But all of that information would not be clear to viewers of the ads. It was McAuliffe, not Northam, who stopped the bill outlawing sanctuary policies from becoming law. Northam and other Democrats voted against the bill because, they said, it was unnecessary. “The fact is, Ed Gillespie and Richmond Republicans know there are no sanctuary cities in Virginia,” Northam said about attacks on his vote, according to the Times-Dispatch. As Virginia Public Radio wrote in late August: “People define sanctuary cities a variety of ways. If the definition is a city that defies immigration law, then Virginia has no sanctuary cities. If the definition is that a city refuses to detain some immigrants until federal officials can pick them up, Virginia has several of those. But they’re not violating any law by refusing to hold suspects

without a warrant.” Indeed, in a 2015 opinion, Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring, a Democrat, wrote that state law enforcement officials were not required by law to honor requests from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to detain, longer than necessary, any immigrants federal authorities believe to be in the U.S. illegally. “It is my opinion that an ICE detainer is merely a request,” Herring wrote. “It does not create for a law enforcement agency either an obligation or legal authority to maintain custody of a prisoner who is otherwise eligible for immediate release from local or state custody. For that reason, an adult inmate or a juvenile inmate with a fixed release date should be released from custody on that date notwithstanding the agency’s receipt of an ICE detainer.” Even Gillespie has said that Virginia doesn’t actually have sanctuary cities. “I agree we don’t have any,” Gillespie said when talking about immigration at a Virginia Bar Association debate with Northam in July. That was after Gillespie said he doesn’t “believe that cities or counties should be free to pick and choose, you know, what [federal immigration] laws they enforce, and declare themselves a sanctuary city.” Gillespie has said that, if he were governor, he would have signed HB 2000.
