Architecture Design Studio: Air Week 1 Deguo Hou 387313 A New Building for the University of Melbourne There are many 3D modeling projects I’m interested in, but recently there is an exhibition of the new building design of the architecture building, and I’m into it. I like the way they rendering the project, in detail, not like Sketch up work, very roughly. And also, they rendered the environment as well, like the shadow of the tree and the dark clouds sky which is something I never thought about before; I always use the sunshine in my project. However, I think the design is ugly.

Introduction of the New Architecture Building Link: http:/ /www.abp-unimelb.com/engage/a-new-building “The Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning is working towards creating a world-leading centre of education and research focused on the built environment. Following an international design competition in 2009, which attracted 133 submissions from 15 countries, we appointed the architectural team of John Wardle Architects (Melbourne) and NADAAA (Boston) to work with us to deliver our vision for a living, pedagogical building that is an exemplar of sustainable design and transformative teaching. The competition attracted entries from architecture firms across Australia and abroad, including the likes of Denton, Corker Marshall and Frank Gehry. It was the partnership of John Wardle Architects and NADAAA (previously known as Office dA) who most impressed the jury, demonstrating their capacity to work collaboratively with the Faculty and engage in a studio approach. They also bring a global understanding of design education, having designed several schools of architecture between them. With the conclusion of the design development phase, we have reached an exciting moment in our project to create a landmark new building for the University of Melbourne. An exhibition showcasing the design schemes will be held in the Wunderlich Gallery from 27 February to 17 March 2012. It will also reflect the

collaborative design processes and research undertaken between John Wardle Architects and NADAAA. Organised around the themes of the design competition, the exhibition will reveal the architects responses to the four key concepts which represent our Faculty’s academic values: built pedagogy; the academic environment; the design studio; the living building. The built pedagogy value is manifested in the carefully researched formal responses to a need for an energy efficient passive design: the operable windows and the consideration of embodied energy in the choice of materials. The design studio value is manifested through spatial organisation that keeps the building open from outside and within, so we can learn from one another by walking around the space and engaging with a diversity of research and learning. People walking past the building will also be able to see into various spaces, and view the vibrancy of activity inherent in studio teaching and learning. Essentially, the building will reflect and facilitate an environment where the exploration of ideas and design innovations can take place. With its series of soaring atrium spaces, flexible design studios, open workspaces and roof-top garden, it will be a new kind of academic space that will encourage people to work together and imaginations to soar. The building will also present a unique and fascinating learning tool for staff, students and researchers, both during the construction period and once it is occupied.
