I was born in the high desert of Southern California then moved to the wet, green Pacific Northwest to study architecture in 2008. Somewhere along the way, I packed up a backpack and flew to China for a summer to study architecture and sustainable urban-rural development with an interdisciplinary group of architects, urban planners, and sinophiles in Fujian and Sichuan provinces. After returning to Oregon and graduating with a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Oregon’s White Stag Campus in Portland, I flew back to China to continue my architectural practice. Upon arriving in Beijing, I first took a part-time intern position with C/AA before accepting a full-time position with Archiland International in the spring. My interests lie in social architecture, informal built environments, design in the developing world, housing, critcal regionalism, language, food politics, urban agriculture, and urban-rural development. When I am not in the office, I am perusing outdoor markets, eating “chuanr and hotpot with friends, riding my bike, or reading. I am currently based in Beijing, but looking for my next adventure...

2013 tianjin, china office, urban design

A Tianjin-based company came to the Archiland office in interest of having their own office redesigned in addition to an attached exhibition space focused around sustainable best practices to be built as a model for future sustainable architectural design in China. The client hopes to achieve LEED certification and aims to implement a wide range of innovative green technologies from a photovoltaic facade to digitally controlled smart sensors throughout the building. My role on this project was in its schematic design phase and visualization. I helped produce drawings, develop the facade concept, create 3D and physical models, create presentations and sat in on meetings with the client and design team throughout the project.

edible city year site type

2012 dujiangyan, sichuan, china urban design, cultural

China’s western province of Sichuan, rocked by the devastating Wenchuan earthquake in 2008, is undergoing large-scale transformation, giving testimony to China’s speedy, often “devil-may-care” attitude regarding urban and rural development. Dujiangyan, neighbor to Sichuan’s largest city of Chengdu, is a city with a stunning landscape which, despite centuries of urban growth, has continued to seep into the urban fabric. This project is an attempt to help stabilize a rapidly changing landscape through blurring the lines between urban and rural, both physically and culturally. In sum, Edible City is about food security, regeneration, urban agriculture, and strengthening a Chinese community through food. Edible City was a undergraduate thesis project done in my last year with the University of Oregon Department of Architecture under the supervision of Dr. Hajo Neis.

tiantuo innovation factory year site type

2013 tianjin, china commercial, heritage, urban design

Six 1940s-era factories lie on a site in the heart of Tianjin. Originally built to produce agricultural materials in the days of Mao’s Great Leap Forward, the buildings have been used to produce John Deere tractor parts for the last 10 years. The Tianjin City Urban Design Board has set out to repurpose these old buildings in hopes of developing a new commercial core. The project was the first phase in a competition between several international offices to explore the potential for this rich heritage area. My role in the project was to produce schmatic drawings, help in the urban design concept development, create 3D models, and compile the materials into a presentation to be sent to the mayor of Tianjin.

2014 kwun tong district, hong kong sar, china urban design, collective housing

The concept for this project catalyzed after reading “Portraits from Above”, the architectural and photographic investigation into Hong Kong’s rooftop communities by Rufina Wu and Stefan Canham - informal settlments of scrap metal, concrete, and plastic that fight for a space in a city with one of the highest costs of living in the world. After some site analyis and an independent design charette, the project has become a research proposal entry for the 2014 International Association of China Planning publication.
