President’s Report Isabella Forbes, President USLBA First, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the council and the membership for their confidence in electing me to the office of President for the next two years. I look forward to meeting many of you that I do not already know. If you have any questions that you would like to ask, I would be pleased to answer them and if I do not know the answer I will find out. During my presidency I would like to see us be able to cut some of the expense that is incurred by the Bowls USA magazine. Should anyone have any ideas regarding this matter you can contact me, Vice President Marty Schans or the editor with your suggestions. We now have a new rules committee which is being chaired by Richard Broad. His committee consists of Conrad Melton (Chief Umpire), Kottia Spangler and Richard (Dick) Sayer. If you have any questions regarding the rule or changes that might possibly be made, you should contact one of these people. The Crystal Mark edition of the rules which is put out by World Bowls is our Bowling Bible and any changes that we would like to make should be submitted to the committee so that they can submit them to World Bowls to be considered. Our new VP Marty Schans is also available to anyone that needs answers. Marty and I will be working closely together to try to get things done and move our organization forward. As many of you know, last year the SW men and women put together a Division wide Open House and this recruited many new members for our clubs. This was held on the Saturday prior to Mother’s Day and another Division wide Open House is scheduled for the same Saturday this year. I would like if at all possible, to see the entire USLBA hold an Open House on a day that would be suitable for all divisions. While I realize that this might be difficult, each division could select a date on which to have all their clubs run Open Houses. Think about it, but better yet, try to do it. I am confident that the organizers of the SW event would willingly share their information and knowledge to the other divisions if they would like to take on this exciting endeavor. Eileen Love who has run the Super Shots Club (SSC) so successfully for the past six years has informed me that she wishes to hand over her duties to a suitable successor. I hope you will join me in giving Eileen a huge vote of thanks for performing this valuable service to our members. In addition, the SSC has contributed a significant sum of money to USLBA to help with its running expenses. Anyone that would like to take on this important position is invited to contact me. I look forward to being your President for the next two years and please contact me directly if there is anything with which I can help you. Izzy

Opinion Editorial It’s all in the game by Trevor Colby, Editor I wish to point out that anything I write in this magazine is my own opinion and not the official view of the USLBA.

Drawing Your Attention

During the past few months I have been requested to take on duties and activities in my club that I was not previously required to do. This has happened because some people who were draw masters have not rejoined our club this season, and also by one lady intending to take a well deserved rest next year by giving up running six tournaments that she has organized and played in for the last 17 years. This situation has fitted in well with the fact that I am presently unable to be as active a bowler as I once was, so I am able to devote some of my time to help out in this direction. In this capacity, I am becoming more aware of the trials & tribulations, intricacies, pitfalls and labor intensiveness of the work that club draw masters and tournament organizers have been doing since time immemorial for the benefit of their own club in particular, and for the bowling community at large. When I first started bowling in 1995 at the now defunct club at Westland in the western suburbs of Detroit MI, there were only a few members and the daily draw was an exceedingly informal affair that took place on the club-house deck and went something like “You bowl with Nancy and Trevor and I’ll bowl with Archie and Joey”. Imagine the difference when I moved to Sun City AZ after I retired in 2000. It was not long, about the third day I think, that I fell afoul of the draw master for being late in putting in my name tag. He warned me immediately that if I were late again, my tag would not be accepted into the draw. I was suitably admonished but realized that he did me a big favor. I found the bowling in Arizona to be fantastic but the allergies and climate did not agree with me so I decided to move to Sun City Center FL. At SCC the draw master and his helpers had a separate room that was locked at 9:15 am and that was how they dealt with late-comers. No amount of pleading would induce them to unlock it. Well, maybe once or twice. Please remember to be early for the draw and you will receive a friendly smile, but woe betide you if you try to slide in your name tag when the draw is almost complete. It seems that like many other volunteers, the efforts of tournament organizers and draw masters go largely unrecognized, so if you can remember it next time you finish a tournament or a game, how about calling for a vote of thanks for the organizer or draw master.

A Problem in Need of Resolution

At our club I have acquired the job of running a Mixed Pairs League comprising 16 men and 16 women. The object is for each person to have a different partner every week and to play against a different team every week. I have run into trouble with this by a having couple of people playing with the same person twice and against the same person twice although the second time that person did have a different partner. Consequently I had to make last minute adjustments. I believe that I now have it properly sorted out for a league that will last six weeks next season. I know there are a lot of excellent people out there who are adept at conceiving draws for games of many types. This one may even need a software program to achieve the desired result and if anyone can do this or know anyone that can resolve this problem, then I would be grateful to receive your solution covering as many weeks as possible.

The Most Important Thing

What is the most important thing in Lawn Bowling? Is it the line that your bowl should take to the jack? Is it the weight that you put on your bowl to reach the jack? Is it the pre-game strategy that you figure out how to deal with your opponent? Is it the tactics that you employ during the course of the game? Is it winning that all important game, or is it just winning at all costs? Over a period of several months while being a spectator at different clubs, I have had the opportunity to observe many things that one is unable to see regularly while engaged in playing a game. Basic rules are often ignored and this either delays the game or cause ill feelings in the person or team being disrespected. I contend that the following things are part of the most important thing in the game: Possession of the rink – after their bowl stops, many players call up to the head demanding to know who has the shot or what the situation is. Gathering the bowls – everyone at the head should assist and the score can be marked later. Placing the gathered bowls should be done after the mat has been set so as not to influence the position of the mat. Being conversant with the Laws of the Sport of Bowls and observing them at all times. Walking up the rink after your bowl can prevent your opponent from seeing where your bowl finishes. Walking up the side of the rink may disturb the draw line of the bowls and also affect the player on the adjacent rink who is about to bowl. Saying farewell to your opponent is very important and so is wishing him well in his next game. All of these things are part of ETIQUETTE which may be defined very simply as Good Sportsmanship. Observation of etiquette will help you to feel better about whether you have won or lost the game and will also help to promote the feeling that you have made a friend with whom you would not mind bowling again.

BETTER BOWLS& CLUB NEWS SOUTHEAST DIVISION

Tips and tidbits for improving and enjoying your game By Conrad Melton

USLBA National Umpire in Chief and SWD Instruction Chairman

Change……

Something made different; an adaptation; alteration; addition; adjustment; advancement; correction; innovation; modification; refinement and a concept that produces apprehension, and concern in some people. When the subject is a bowler’s delivery, those who resist change are destined for some frustration. Conrad Melton Bowlers who truly don’t know ‘what to change’ aren’t completely culpable; they probably weren’t taught that a delivery is an amalgamation of components. Grip is one component, follow-through is another. Others include one’s aiming system, foot position, pre-shot routine, attitude and more. You don’t have to change much. In fact, you can’t change everything…but if your game isn’t as good as you think it should be, you really should change something. It’s helpful if you have some “standards” for your quality of play and you need a working knowledge of the components of your delivery, including an active mental inventory of the changes that are available to you in each category. Today let’s talk a little about standards. Identifying one’s personal standards sounds like a not-toodifficult thing to establish. But the truth is, there are a lot of bowlers who actually believe (at least, to hear them talk,) that every bowl they roll is more influenced by external conditions than themselves. The rink, it’s fast or slow areas, its bumps, or holes, or wrinkles, or a combination are responsible for MOST of their unsuccessful shots. Their other bloopers happen because someone spoke, or moved, or the wind gusted, or their wrist turned, or something, anything & everything. Bottom line: they continually talk as though they personally have no responsibility for the results of their bowl. Having to listen to such excuses makes me crazy. But that’s another article. Among those who accept responsibility for their bowling, it’s common to have an expectation of the general results s/he thinks s/he should be producing. The best bowlers expect to put 2 out of 3 within about a foot of their target, and the third, close by. I say target because bowling to a specific position in the back or in front for a block is expected to be accomplished just as consistently as drawing to the jack. Good bowlers expect two out of three within a yard, and novices who can put all three bowls within two yards of the jack are considered “future champions” in our exquisite sport. When you become aware that the results you’re producing are less than desired, the predictable next question is what are

Lawn Bowls Magazine Spring 2009

you going to do about it? The answer should always be change something. Choices come from the list mentioned above plus others: your pace, what you’re thinking about when you’re on the mat, your observations, your weight control techniques, rhythm, stance, step, balance, and, to repeat, because it’s so important, your mental game. We’ll talk about some of those choices in the next issue of BOWLS USA.

$aying Thank$ to Umpire$

The U$LBA need$ ump$. A lot of ump$. We’re $hort in every Divi$ion. And the problem i$ getting wor$e every year. At pre$$ time, we have 82 ump$ in the country, plu$ ten who are in variou$ $tage$ of recertifying. To recertify or not i$ a difficult que$tion. A$ a $port, we demand a lot from our ump$, and the truth i$, there’$ very little they receive in return. Finding umps that are willing to serve during major tournaments is getting more and more difficult, and the future looks even bleaker. Try as we might, the National Umpire’s Club can’t add enough new umps to replace the ones we lose every year. A lot of them get burnt out because of the number of calls they get while they’re playing in a tournament. That’s really unfortunate because there are some very easy ways for bowlers to reduce a playing umpire’s workload. Most of the time bowlers don’t need an ump to do a measure. If it’s close enough for feeler-gages or calipers, OK. And certainly if there’s a question about the rules, you needn’t feel guilty about calling an ump. But if it’s just for a simple measure, if the two team measurers can’t agree, the skips should be informed and they should ask a mutually agreeable, nearby player who is not presently bowling to measure for them. Umps are unnecessarily called upon to make measures waaaaaaay too often. Maybe it’s time for a new approach to this problem. Did you notice my little hint at the beginning? Yes, I think it’s time to consider saying thanks to non-playing umps who serve at important tournaments in a more meaningful way. What if there was a $1.00 per player per day surcharge for umpires? At the playdowns, or a points tournament, instead of a $20 entry fee per person, the charge would be $22. Then a two day pairs event where 35 teams play, would produce $70 per day for the ump(s). As an hourly wage, we’re only talking $6 and change, but it would reimburse them for their gas and leave enough to take momma out for dinner in exchange for perhaps eleven hours of service. And there would be a lot more umps feeling a lot less abused. I think if umpires were not expected to simply DONATE a half a tank of gas and ten or eleven hours of time, that there would probably be a lot more “available” umpires. It might even cause bowlers to begin to recognize and appreciate the critical and specialized services that umpires provide. Continued on page 29

Membership Trail By Frank Ransome Chairman USLBA Membership Committee Email: jackhi@sbcglobal.net Frank Ransome

It’s very difficult to get excited about lawn bowling when the rain is coming down in torrents and it would be freezing if it wasn’t California. Down in Santa Cruz they can bowl every day because they have that new artificial green, but the rest of us have to wait until our greens chairman says it is dry enough. Despite the weather several of the PIMD Clubs have trained new members because they had a list of people that signed up to take lessons. So far I’ve handed out 15 of the 2009 welcome packets to be presented to a new bowler when he or she becomes a PIMD/USLBA member. At my home club of Richmond CA we had the green aerated and seeded last September so people that want to bowl despite the weather are able to. I’ve been working with the Recreation Department to come up with some programs to begin in late March. First thing was to set up a training course for recreation personnel. The City is responsible for the maintenance of the green and its Recreation Department runs programs on the green. Beginning in late February I will have classes for teaching supervisors how to teach the sport and to conduct tournaments. Tournaments can be the back bone of any program. We will start with youth under 16 with regular games scheduled for after school and on Saturdays. Each six or eight week session will begin with a fun tournament and end with one team winning a trophy. The plans are for the Recreation Department to involve local businesses in Lawn Bowling tournaments along the lines of the tournaments conducted in Minneapolis by Brit’s Tavern. We can’t serve wonderful steins of cold beer like they do at Brit’s, but there will always be soda and cold water to drink. The one thing that the bowling club must do is to issue bowls and have someone standing by to make sure that the green is not damaged. Too many bowlers forget that the green we are bowling on is real grass and it has to be treated with tender loving care. I shudder every time I go to a tournament and see bowlers dumping their bowls out of a bag onto the green. The acceptable way is to leave the

8

bag behind the back board and to take each bowl out and lay it down where the bowls are supposed to be. That’s at least three feet behind the mat and two feet to the right of the mat as you stand on the bank. We teach this in the first outdoor course as we also teach the new bowlers to step to the right after their bowl stops rolling. Students think we are being a little fussy when they are told what to do, but they only have to stumble over a misplaced bowl once to see one of the reasons. My courses always emphasize that a bowl is laid down and rolled rather than thrown, so our members watch over the recreation people to be sure there’s no lofting or dumping. There’s no way to make up for days lost due to the weather but I have tapes to show and we come back on the first clear day and pick up where we left off. With the preparation that has gone into the programming and the enthusiasm of the people selected to be coaches, we are looking forward to a great new year.

Bowls and Brews

By Bob and Dick, the Sayer Brothers, third generation bowlers from the Northeast Division

“Tight as a goats face!” “You’re a wee bit heavy and a wee bit narrow, but other than that it was perfect!” “Which bowl is shot?” - “The one in your hand!” Why do we love this game? Because it is fun, it is lighthearted and some of the finest people we’ve ever met donned an all white outfit and spent all day in the blistering heat competing in this silly old game. And these fine people are funny. The short list above is just a few of our favorites that we’ve heard and repeated often over the years. Bobby Smart, a skinny pole bean of man who won a couple of US Championships with Jim Candelet back in 1959 & 1968 was famous in New England for keeping it light on the green. In his eighties even, when he’d see a bowl coming down the green that was, let’s say a yard through, he would turn and run on the bank and climb half way up the chain linked fence at the Smithfield Avenue club and then look back at the bowl finishing. Then, when all the bowls were thrown on an end and nothing was within a yard he’d shout out ‘get a flagpole’ to do the measuring. This is the stuff that sticks with us. The ‘tight as a goats face’ remark, Okay we admit we don’t understand it, but be damned if it isn’t funny. Duncan Farrell of Essex County NJ and Clearwater FL who probably accounts for most of the memorable sayings around the green in the east, made that comment one time during a game and I’m guessing no one stopped laughing for at least 2 ends. Another time when his teammate threw a wrong bias, Duncan calmly picked up the bowl from out of bounds and shouted “You were just a bit tight!” A great photograph of Duncan appeared in Bowls magazine years ago from the US Championships. He held a sign that said simply “Send Help!” The results from the championship showed why he held up the sign. We won’t repeat them now. There are hundreds of great things we’ve heard on the green - not all bowls related. Here are a few: “When you’re down, be up, anything can happen and usually does!” “How would you like to be up there in that plane? You wouldn’t want to be up there without it!” Alec Dakers said during a game Dick had with him when he was a teenager. “I opened the window and influenza!” - Alec again. “When in doubt, draw!” “When in doubt, drive!” “Ah you’re out in Mary’s room laddie!” “Burn it!” “But I can only see a piece of it!” “Just hit that and the rest will follow!” “When I was younger I could knock a bird dropping off the side of the jack without moving it!” - Pete Campbell. “A bowler of your caliber should be able to make that shot!”

Lawn Bowls Magazine Spring 2009

“Hey, see the little white one, let’s try something different this end. Let’s try to get close to it!” “Draw, draw, draw!”- Sacco Delgado. Perhaps the funniest thing we’ve ever heard and seen on the green was Doris Dun of Cunningham Park, Milton MA, praying that Bob would miss burning the end. Bob had done so several times in a row because he needed a big score to win the game. Doris told everyone at the head that she hoped he would miss it. The funny thing is that Doris was on Bob’s team. Now for the all important Brew portion of our article (we know some of you don’t read the rest and skip to this section and we don’t blame you!). Our fondness for the suds has allowed us to try many fine ales over the years. This month’s recommendation is an old classic that we had never tasted until 2007 when we played in the U.S. National Championships at our dad’s home club in Sun City Center, Florida. Smithwick’s (pronounced Smiddicks) became an instant favorite. We won’t tell you how many we had during that week, but let’s say we were testing our dad’s heart. When recycling day rolled around and he had to take out the trash (to be honest we were there to help, but even we couldn’t do it in one trip!) This tasty brew is highly recommended for championship play, if you have enough of them you won’t have problems keeping your head down in your delivery, trust us! Editor’s Note: Smithwick’s is an Irish red ale style beer from Kilkenny in Ireland. Smithwick’s was originally brewed in St. Francis Abbey Brewery in Kilkenny, known as ‘Smithwicks Brewery’ until c.2000. The brewery is situated on the site of a Franciscan abbey where monks had brewed ale since the 14th century, and has ruins of the original abbey on its grounds. It is Ireland’s oldest operating brewery, founded by John Smithwick in 1710 on land owned by the Duke of Ormonde and it is the major ale producer in Ireland. It was purchased from Irish Ale Breweries in 1965 by Guinness and is now, along with Guinness, part of Diageo. Smithwick’s for the domestic market is brewed in Kilkenny and the higher strength export variety is brewed in Dundalk. Smithwick’s is listed in the top five best tasting beers by the McHale beer rating club of Ireland. A variation is Smithwick’s Draught, which has a ruby red tone with a stable, but slightly thin head. It is produced using hops and special roasted, malted barley. Its texture is smooth and refined with a bitter and complex finish. Although of lesser fame than Guinness, Smithwicks is often regarded as the ‘local favorite’ amongst Irish pub-goers. In 2004, Diageo PLC began distribution in the USA. Smithwick’s had previously been marketed in Canada with great success.

Jefferson Park

By Kat Marriner When I first joined this club in 2002 I heard tales of bowlers laughing in the face of the Northwest winter. Hearty members used to meet for a social game in soggy unity but those days were gone, replaced with seasonal moving, watching and book reading, all favorite winter pastimes in Seattle. Life, weather and bowling are cyclical and Jefferson Park now proudly laughs in the face of the cold chill once again. Not wanting to put bowls away at the end of the Late Summer League in September, a new league sprang to life, aptly named the “Die Hard League”. Those who donned their woolies were rewarded with clear evening skies and barely a drop of rain fell on Wednesday evenings from October into early December. Participants were randomly grouped into teams named for a winter squash drink and they encouraged their teammates to attend at a time when it was easy to sink into an easy chair for the evening. I think it’s safe to say that anyone who came out to play was a winner, but a warm round of applause must go to “Kool Kabocha,” the winning team of Janice Bell, Richard Glasman & John Johnson. The energized spirit of our club comes from the rich vein of newcomers to the game and old-timers who are willing to embrace the changes and share their passion. By Trevor Colby This year the Holiday Bowl was held December 5-7, 2008 to coincide with the delightful decorative festive season lighting of the town center that makes it such an attractive place to visit at this time of year. This hotly contested event is the most competitive open club tournament held in the SE division and always attracts a full complement of 28 mixed triples teams from far and wide. There were 21 teams from such clubs as Clearwater, Pinehurst, Sarasota, Sun-N-Fun, Sun City Center and World Parkway. The remaining seven teams were from Mount Dora and they had to go through an earlier elimination process to be able compete in the big event. Although rather cool on the last day, the weather was sunny and dry and allowed all ďŹ ve games of sixteen ends to be played on schedule. The games are conducted on a high point winner versus high point winner basis until the last of the 5 games. In this last game the two highest teams with the most wins and accumulated points play each other to determine 1st and 2nd place. Cash prizes were awarded to the following teams: 1-George Tucker (Pinehurst), Christine Garbett (Lakeland) & Jackie Tucker (Pinehurst). 2-Iris Sager, Peter & Janet Bunce (Sun-N-Fun). 3-Ron Jones (Clearwater), Dylan Jacobs & Noreen Welsh (London Ontario). 4-George & Sandra Whitelaw (Sarasota) & Gary Smith (Mount Dora). 5-Julia & Tony Farrell and John Sager (Sun-N-Fun). 6-Bud Ricucci, Earl Shaner & Beth Forbes (Mount Dora). 7-Tony Theakston, Arliene Marshall & Wendy Theakston (Lakeland). 8-Bill Baird, Gary Williamson & Marita Nierth (Mount Dora). 9-Alex Graham (Clearwater), Dudley & Norma Phillips (Lakeland). 10-Mike Maneilly, Bobbi Elwell & Jean Adams (Mount Dora).

SOUTHEAST DIVISION & CLUB NEWS MacWilliams Memorial Mixed Pairs

By Trevor Colby The 2009 MacWilliams Memorial was held Jan 31 at Sarasota where the greens, according to President Rob Buck are the best they have been for at least ten years, thanks to the efforts of green keeper Graham Smith and his crew of industrious club members. Both Bert and Ede MacWilliams, whom this event commemorates, are in the Hall of Fame due to their record of bowling successes and administrative capabilities at national, divisional and club levels. Because of their skill under all playing conditions the venues for this event alternate between HARTRU and GRASS surfaces. This tournament started in 2004 at Clearwater and in 2010 will again be held at Clearwater (Hartru), 2011 Sun City Center (Grass), 2012 Clearwater (Hartru) and 2013 Sarasota (Grass). 32 teams entered the competition and after three ten end games there were only four who had beaten all their opponents. These finalists played off in a series of four end games to determine the overall champions. This year’s champions are Michael Maneilly & Bobbi Elwell who defeated Ralph Ross & Barb Roller. This happened to be a reversal of fortune for both teams, because last year at Clearwater, Ralph & Barb beat Michael & Bobbi in the final game that decided the title winner. In the play-off game for positions 1 & 2, Michael was leading Ralph by 4-3 in the 4th end. With his last bowl in hand, Ralph was 3 shots down in the head and he rolled his bowl

By Jackie Williamson Our season got off to an exciting start when Don and Cindy Cote won the Mr. & Mrs. Tournament. It was the first time they were able to enter this tournament for married couples since Don is a new bowler who learned to bowl just a few weeks before the tournament. Bud Ricucci won the 4-3-2-1 tournament. Lady Skip Tournament: Jane Keneipp, Frank Ackley & Clarence Fickel. The popular Home League began in January and runs for seven weeks. The North Central Florida League is underway and this year it includes the addition of three teams from Lakeland. Our club also hosted a friendly competition with bowlers from Lakeland and a reciprocal visit is planned. Earl Shaner introduced Australian Pairs which was well received and is played on Sunday afternoons. We gained 15 new members this fall and activities for them include a Novice League and ‘Bowl with your Mentor Night’. Social events were well attended with Homecoming our first big party of the season seeing 125 members turn out. Everyone enjoyed a pulled-pork lunch prepared by Sylvia Mackey and her committee. The annual Christmas Party was a fun event with hors d’oeuvres, dessert and entertainment in between. To finish off 2008, Earl Shaner and wife Janet organized a New Year’s Eve party that may be the start of a new tradition. About 45 people attended, bringing lots of hors d’oeuvres, sweets & munchies. 20 members bowled eight ends while the remainder got the party started. During the course of the evening, members engaged in games of Bingo, Skit-Skat, Euchre, Mahjongg, Mexican Train Dominoes, and even Pass the Pigs. About a dozen people were still around for the countdown to 2009 and a champagne toast. What a way to start the New Year!

SOUTHEAST DIVISION & CLUB NEWS Lakeland

By Christine Garbett Our winter season started off with the arrival of our members from Canada and the UK. At the well attended Christmas Party, a traditional menu of turkey, ham and trimmings was enjoyed with carol singing and games rounding off the pleasant evening. Club members took part in a “First Friday of the Month” evening event in Lakeland in which many groups take part to advertise and promote their sport or mission. Each month the theme is different and this time it was Seniors. We demonstrated lawn bowling by use of a DVD, bowls and a jack. Passers-by were encouraged to take away an information pack offering a free lesson the following week. Around twenty people arrived for their lesson and after a brief explanation and demonstration, they were assigned to rinks. Many club members helped out with instruction and another free lesson was offered for the following week. Tournament results: Open Pairs: Audrey Ney & Ursula Cooney. Men’s Singles: Don Woodington. Women’s Singles: Marion Payne. The Lakeland Invitational Triples held Jan 17, was won by Don Woodington, Tony & Wendy Theakston of Lakeland. Many members are entering tournaments at other clubs and are enjoying some success as well as the improvement in their bowling that competition brings. Jitney bowling is well attended as are the competitive leagues and newer bowlers are encouraged to play as much as possible. A Fun Day was held in February with the theme of “Buddy, can you spare a Dime”. There were definitely some weird and wonderful outfits to be seen on the green that day.

Pebble Beach (Men) & Suncoasters (Women) (Sun City Center)

By David Burbery Both clubs are pleased with the renewed interest in the game taken by local residents and they recently combined to stage two clinics. These were well organized and the interest shown by the attendees was most encouraging. Joe Coleman explained the basics of the game to everyone and volunteers took small groups on to the green and encouraged everyone to try their hand. Each clinic attracted approx. 40 people and half of them subsequently signed up for the monthly lawn bowls class which is held under the direction of Gretchen Meixner. New boards were elected. Pebble Beach: President-Ray Turman, VP-Howard Kane, Secretary/Treasurer-Ben Caudill. Suncoasters: President-Christine Burbery, Secretary-Marge Lange, Treasurer-Gina Shanklin. Sun-N-Fun

By Jean Stuhlmueller The Southeast Division’s opening tournament of the season, Sun-N-Fun Invitational Mixed Pairs, was held Nov. 23. The green was in superb condition, receiving compliments from everyone. One bowler was heard to say “I have signed up for all the tournaments I can at Sun-N-Fun because of its green”. 2008 United States National Championships By Dora Stewart and R. Gil Stephan Jr. This event was held in Sun City AZ, October 26-30. The weather was HOT and so were the bowlers. The only outright winner after the round robin was Rosa Gandara of the SWD Stars in the Women singles. She was awarded the Gold Medal. Second place was a tie between Nancy Nishikawa NWD, Jackie Tucker SED and Kim Heiser SWD Stripes.

The Men’s Singles ended in a tie with Michael Siddall SWD Stars winning the Gold medal by defeating Tom Burnoski PIMD in the playoff.

All other events ended in ties and required playoffs. The Women’s Pairs ended in a three way tie. In the first playoff the SWD Stripes team of Pat Cronshaw & Carrie Fossati defeated the NED team of Eileen Luba & Lois Saladin. In the final, the SCD team of Myra Wood & Lorraine Hitchcock proceeded to defeat Cronshaw & Fossati to win the Gold Medal. This win was a first for both women in these championships.

The Men’s Pairs ended in a three way tie between the CD team of Carl Landgren & Steve Nelson, the NW team of Richard Broad & Doug Bradley and the SW Stripes team of Tony Baer & Bill Brault. In the first playoff Broad & Bradley defeated Nelson & Landgren. In the final game, Brault & Baer defeated Broad & Bradley to take home the Gold Medal. For Tony & Bill this is their first win in the US National Championships.

The Gathering of the Clans (Oops, I mean Divisions) at Sun City AZ, prior to the Ceremonial Parade Dora Stewart’s pool party was a huge success; there may even have been some venturesome enough to take a dip but no seniors fell in the pool, thank God. At Dora Stewart’s pool party, Jonathan Burnoski won first prize in the fancy dress, although Howard Stern (alias Bill Brault) caused a ripple (of laughter) when he appeared.

The 2008 PIMD officers are all serving a second term in 2009: President-Bill McConachie, VP-De Doring, SecretaryJohn Ogden & Treasurer-Alex Xavier. We are grateful to them all for their commitment. The tournament director will again be Peter Knopf. We are fortunate to be able to call on his experience for a third year and we now are looking for someone to work alongside him. Anyone interested should contact Bill or Peter. Betty Service Singles: Six bowlers competed at San Francisco on October 4. The winner was E. B. Parkell (San Francisco). Men’s Novice Singles: On October 4-5, 12 bowlers competed for the title at Sunnyvale. The eventual winner was Bud Birkenseer (Palo Alto) after an exciting playoff against Sebastian Sciacca (San Francisco). New Winter Friendship Games: At the Men’s Novice Singles Tournament, Bud Birkenseer (Palo Alto) suggested that it would be a good idea to give novice bowlers the opportunity for some friendly competitive play during the winter. He was supported by Oscar Collaco (San Francisco), Larry Collaco (Sunnyvale) & Terry Patrignani (San Jose). The winter games have been well attended at these four clubs & we congratulate Bud for making it happen. Next winter he hopes to expand the games to include other clubs & encourage more novices to attend & develop their game with guidance from more experienced bowlers.

ers. The future looks bright. About four years ago the Parks & Recreation Dept. advised us that a new lease would require a monthly rent to contribute to the City’s significant maintenance costs of our facility. To help us with promoting the club & increasing membership, they removed ivy from the fences surrounding the green so that we became more visible. They also gave us advice about promoting ourselves through the various city agencies & publications. The increased visibility has been a big advantage and we often attract people who have lived in the area but did not realize we existed. We developed a business plan which set some goals for recruitment and development of the club which would enable us to cover the cost of the monthly rent. We have continued to grow over the last four years, in part because our members are very aware of our objectives & have become our best recruiters. As a result, a new lease which includes a monthly rental was agreed in December 2008. As part of the Summer National Senior Games, Palo Alto will host a Men’s Pairs (August 3 & 4) and a Women’s Pairs (August 5 & 6) as one of a number of demonstration sports. There will also be a fun Draw Triples on August 7. Contact Terry Hogan at etelhogan@comcast.net if you are interested. You must be over 50, a US resident and a member of a lawn bowls club.

Not Many People Know This.

By George Scarpato The 2008 SF Centennial Invitational Tournament on September 28 was held on a cold & windy day. Despite the weather, a full green of mixed triple teams turned out. The victors were Larry Collaco (Sunnyvale), Oscar Collaco & Judith Perkins (San Francisco). Based on seven handicap & championship draw tournaments, the women’s & men’s bowlers of the year were Tirisa Biukoto & Oscar Collaco. New Officers: President-D J Doring, VP-E B Parkell, Treasurer Oscar Collaco, Asst. Treasurer Alex Xavier, Secretary Linda Flores & Asst. Secretary George Scarpato. Following the meeting, over 70 members & guests were served a traditional holiday luncheon. Later there was fervent bidding during our annual silent auction on a wide range of new, collectible & “gently used” items which raised nearly $750—all designated for the Club’s greens. We continue to attract Golden Gate Park visitors to our weekly free lessons & 10 new members joined in 2008. In October we honored Bill Campbell with a mixed triples tourney followed by a wine & cheese reception. Bill has been an active member since 1964 and says “I wish I had joined earlier.” He has served as our Club’s President, VP, long-term secretary & has been its senior instructor for well over 10 years. When Club members were asked who taught them, they cried in unison - “Bill Campbell.” Bill Campbell By Pauline de Assis We had a very successful year of bowling including co-hosting the US Open with San Francisco & Oakland. The greens at Rossmoor are about the best in the Bay Area. The old backboards were removed last year & new ones were installed & painted. Our greens keeper does a great job of coring, sanding, etc., & keeping on top of it all. 21 new bowlers were certified in 2008 with many of them eager to improve & master the game. Classes for new bowlers will commence once the winter chills subside. In December the annual Christmas dinner & awards night was enjoyed by some 90 members. The woman & man “Bowler of the Year” awards went to Jackie Purdy & Ed Guterres respectively, who were also the singles champions of 2008. Our winter league commenced on January 13 & runs for six consecutive Tuesdays. The format is one 14 end triples game with a modified draw. Avid bowlers welcome this event as it encourages them to get out on chilly winter days.

By Lloyd Wells 2008 was a year of growth and focus for our club. President Allan Sindelar expanded our interaction within the PIMD by successfully establishing our Halloween tournament as a highlight of bowling in the Monterey Bay area. He continued the solidification of our long time friendship with our Santa Cruz bowling friends by creating the “Battle of the Monterey Bay” bowling challenge. The first of what will be an annual event was won by Santa Cruz. So, for the next several months the Shark Trophy resides in the city known for its gravitational anomalies & the Mystery Spot which can change the way bowls roll! Under President Sindelar’s direction our membership has increased significantly. Currently we have over 40 active participants with an average bi-weekly green appearance of 24. We are pleased to welcome another member who has joined our “90 plus” bowlers club. Bob Wilhelm turned 90 this year & joined Genevieve Cichy and Harry Hocker. The jack is alive on Del Mesa Drive! Our Christmas party was a great success. 52 members and guests attended & enjoyed the wonderful dance music provided by the Monterey High School Orchestra & Singers. President Allan Sindelar, VP Genevieve Cichy & Treasurer Norm Parris were thanked & honored for their two years of service. New Officers: President-Sam Harrison, VP-Bud Truesdell & Treasurer-Wylie Barnett. Lloyd Wells will continue as Secretary. Allan Sindelar will take over the duties of Tournament Director.

At the USLBA Annual National Council Meeting held on September 11, 2008, Treasurer Brian Studwell reported there was a loss of 670 members since 2002. The NW & SW divisions showed an increase in 2008 while the decline continued elsewhere. Brian reviewed the fiscal year 2007 and it showed a loss of $2,026.01. He also reviewed the current Profit & Loss for 2008 and it appear as though there would be a slight surplus. The balance sheet indicated a slight improvement in our cash position from approximately $54,000 to $57,683.04 and this does not include some estimated $20,000 in the Team USA account. Brian reviewed the 2009 budget which indicated an estimated surplus of $4,365. Councilor West moved to raise the annual dues from $10 to $20 effective 2009, the motion was seconded by Councilor Schans. The last time that dues were raised was 1974 by ALBA and dues have remained the same since the inception of AWLBA in 1976. The motion was denied.

By Christine Palochak We hosted an instructional game for the Santa Cruz county judges & staff last August. Our members monitored the games & ice cream was provided by the judges afterwards. In September a similar event was held for the County District Attorney’s office. Santa Cruz won the “Jaws” Tourney, the annual battle of Monterey Bay against Del Mesa Carmel. October saw the last of our 2008 Friday night bowls & dinner which we will continue in 2009. We hosted the PIMD Rinks tournament in October. In the December elections Jerry Louis was elected president for 2009 & our club constitution & by-laws were reviewed & updated. Under the direction of Harry Schoenfeld, new redwood benches have been constructed for the green. Steve Schoenfeld, Jerry & Heidi Louis, John Lyons, Peter Blacklock & Dave Sievert assisted on the project. Our club continues to grow and prosper since the installation of our artificial green in May 2007. The green provides a world class playing surface for bowlers throughout the Bay area. Approximately 25 percent of our membership is dual members holding primary membership with other Bay Area clubs. We invite all bowlers to come on any Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday or Sunday at 12:30 pm to enjoy a game with us.

By Lou Audino New Officers: President-Lou Audino, VP-Ken Gillette, Secretary-Liz Pinkerton and Treasurer-Konrad Beck. DirectorsMurray Brunt, Fred Gardner & Pat Bayless. Tournament Director-John Ogden. On November 1, over half our membership showed up to celebrate the christening of our new clubhouse and many city officials attended the ribbon cutting ceremony. The highlight was Murray Brunt’s speech about the history of bowls in general and San Jose specifically. The guests competed in a spider and then the regulars took to the green to finish the day. We tried something different for club tournaments this year. Instead of players forming their own teams, John Ogden decided to try a different method. The skips were designated and the rest of the players were in a random draw to make up the teams. This way everyone had a chance to win. New players were paired with old pros and the competition was fierce. The success of this method can be seen by the different members that won a club championship this year. Novice Singles: Joe Sacco. Open Singles: Walter Davis. Open Pairs: Lou Audino & Jerry Patrignani. Open Triples: John Ogden, Al Gutierrez & Jim Medeiros. Cut Throat: Jerry Patrignani. Rinks: Lou Audino, Mayou Bernard, Clinton Reeder & Fred Gardner. Winter League: Tom Burnoski & Peter Knopf. With the opening of the new clubhouse we are reaching out to other members of our community and hosting more social activities. On September 28 we held our first games night at the club with poker, backgammon, bridge and a host of other games available. We all had dinner together & it was great to learn more about the people with whom we bowl. We plan to do this on a monthly basis and perhaps more often as the word spreads.

We hosted two Invitationals, both of which were a resounding success, the Carnival in April and the Pat Gonzales Mixed Australian Pairs in September. This year our two Invitationals will be held as fundraisers for the US National Championships. Our tournament director set up two singles round robin tournaments which kept the members competing on the greens most of the year. The Singles Challenge Ladder was won by Steve Dowd. In the Club Championship Singles Tournament, Gordon Thomas had to win 13 singles matches and 2 knock-out playoff matches in order to win the event. Club Pairs Champions were Cecile Langevin & Morris Jolly. The Club Triples Champions were Dan Christensen, Ken Hay & John Parker. Jean & Dick Cochran competed in the Huntsman Senior Games in St George, Utah from October 7-11. They won all four games with total highest points for pairs and came home with gold medals. New Officers for 2009: President-Pat Gonzales; VP- Jim Walker; Secretary-Bernie Crabtree; Treasurer-Frank Impinna.

New directors for 2009-2010 are Ben French, Freddie Hinson & Bev Talley. Returning directors are Gloria Godwin, Eileen Gregg & Sigi Washburn. We mourn the passing of Alicia Attardo who passed away in October. She first joined the Club in 1998. Alicia was a generous club member who consistently contributed to our fundraising efforts. Once again our members donated to our annual canned food drive. On December 30, Gayle & Milton Merrill delivered 100 No. 10 cans of fruit and vegetables to Lydia House, a shelter for abused women. We ended the year with a successful Christmas dinner with 56 members and guests attending. Co-chairs Jean Cochran, Jose Miller and Lucy Starkey did a fabulous job putting the dinner together.

Santa Ana

By Bob Lindsay We have good reason to be extremely proud of member Bob Ralston because he was recently honored by the St. Joseph Hospital Blood Donor Center for donating 34 gallons of blood platelets. This is the most anyone has donated at the hospital. Four of our members entered the R. Gil Stephan Rinks Tournament in Sun City, Arizona. Congratulations to Paul Griesbrink, Mert Pambianco, Angie Salgado & Robert Alessi for placing well. Recent club tournament winners: Cut Throat: 1-Gary Ginther. Club Singles: 1-Gary Ginther. Pick-or-be-picked: 1-Bob Montes & Joe Egerer. 4-3-2-1 Triples: 1-Gary Ginther, Bob Ralston & Dick Clark. We held our annual Christmas/Awards brunch on Sunday Dec 7 and it was attended by most members and their spouses.

Santa Barbara

By Ken Gould We had a busy time at our club during the past few months. 15 bowlers traveled to Cambria in October for our final visitation of the year. November included our city championship tournament which was won (again) by MacKenzie Park. Just wait until next year! In our double elimination mixed singles tournament, Stan Bloom prevailed by defeating previously unbeaten Dale Jackson. Ken Gould, Larry Sizer & Dick Cofiell won the Veteran’s Day Tournament and we had a lot of fun activities and contests at our Turkey Shoot day. Everyone had a great day of fun and games at our Halloween party, the highlight of which was Betty & Tony Cunningham in their wonderful blow-up costumes. At our annual meeting in December, Eileen Morton was elected President, replacing Dorothy Thielges who had done yeoman duty on her tour. We ended the year with a wonderful day of bowling and eating at our Christmas party, followed by a spaghetti feast on New Year’s Day.

SOUTHWEST DIVISION & CLUB NEWS Santa Anita

By Gene Plunkett That time of year is upon us again. What did we do right last year and how can we improve on it this year. The Santa Anita Crew has been keeping busy with things like the Christmas Party and collecting items for the Pasadena Ronald McDonald House. We lost Bob Clauson and Nancy Trask last year, but they have been replaced by two new bowlers

named Mary Collins and Mary Russell who are progressing well due to their bowling frequently. The election of officers was nearly a repeat of last year. Bob Hauer is still President. Jim Miller reclaimed 1st VP, Gayle Plunkett likes being 2nd VP, Doralyn Clauson still scribes our minutes but our Treasurer has changed from Bob Padget to Shuman Chan. Shuman is a novice who bowls like a veteran. Gene Plunkett can’t get out of

the publicity, training, sign making & membership stuff and after eleven plus years it just comes naturally. We’re getting a little more action from the Southwest Division as far as playing tournaments at Santa Anita is concerned. We have picked up the California Bears and Vet/Novice Triples plus the extended version of the Southwest Division Open. I’ve got some signs to make and score cards to duplicate, so I’ll see you next issue.

Letters from the Continent of Europe Dear Sir/Madam, I am very interested of the past and recent history of the sports, across the emblems of Teams, Federations, Championships, Olympic Games & NOCs. It is excited the job of look for pins of teams, federations, etc, but it is difficult because some pins of others countries is difficult to catch it. I would like, if it is possible, to send us a 2 pins of your

federation or another sport pins you can, to add my collection, I will be very gratefuly. Thank you very much! Yours, Marcin Weglewski, Pesztenska 5 m. 24, 03-925 Warszawa, POLAND email: mw.pins@wp.eu

Hello, I started a few months ago to collect postcards and stickers regarding sport. Perhaps could you help me by sending me cards and stickers from your federation? It will be nice of you. Thanks so much for your help and good luck for next competitions. Michel Dailly, Avenue Jules Bianco 672, 73400 Ugine, FRANCE

Cutting the Cost of Producing This Magazine By Trevor Colby In her report on page three, our new President Isabella Forbes says that during her presidency she would like to see us be able to cut some of the expense that is incurred by this Bowls USA magazine. The current cost of producing three magazines per year is approximately $21,000. This cost is broken down as follows: Layout & Design $3,900, Printing $12,600 & Mailing $4,500. The services of the Advertising Manager, Business Manager, Circulation Manager and the Editor are provided free of charge. Let us examine some ways that a cost reduction could be achieved: 1. Reduce the number of issues of

the magazine to one or two per year. This would reduce the cost by $14,000 or $7,000 per year respectively. 2. Retain the present three issues per year and dispense with the professional Layout & Design, Printing and Mailing. The Microsoft Word documents that I produce could be emailed to all divisional and club correspondents who would forward it to their on line members who could either read it on their computer screen, or print it out so as to have their own individual hard copy. Each club could then print copies for sale to members who are not on line. 3. Take the ultimate step and stop producing a magazine altogether. Have the web master receive all the club articles

Lawn Bowls Magazine Spring 2009

and other information that the magazine presently contains and put it on the USLBA web site. This method might possibly have the advantage of being able to place more revenue producing advertisements on the web site as compared with what we are presently able to do in the magazine. I think that before any definitive action is taken, a survey of all club members ought to be undertaken to find out whether they actually want a magazine, and if they do, which method of reducing cost would they prefer. Maybe our members are so keen to read this publication that they might be willing to pay an increased subscription to the USLBA.

Letters to the Editor Dear Trevor Colby, Because you are one of the most well traveled lawn bowlers that I know, I am coming to you with a question that has been bothering me for some time. I have recently acquired a medical problem that has limited my bowling for a spell. I still watch and learn so that when I resume I’ll be the better for it. I have spent almost 50 years reading government and safety requirements in order to market various consumer products. In that end I have learned that words have very specific meanings. While watching the Pebble Beach and Suncoasters bowling their mixed pairs tournament, I noticed several things that I don’t see when I am actively involved. That lady on rink four has very good form. (I’m not that sick). That group in front of me is doing very well but I must move. I never noticed that some bowlers are wide and the best viewing is not directly in line with the head. 45 degrees right or left will do. Now the words: The lead said they had a good head and then he noted that the skip’s next bowl was out of the head. Eureka! Now I know where the expression “Out of his head” came from. Next, their opponent moved the jack and he said “They lost their head.” Bingo, another phrase explained. No further words were coming that were meaningful and my mind started wandering to other things that bother me. I sighted the HOG on the opposite bank. I have asked many bowlers why a Hog came to mark the short line. Strange looks, guesses, no real answer. I once spent two days on the web trying to find the origin of this rather strange marker. My research led me to Canada (no surprise there). One club there said it came from CURLING. Some champion of note, a Mr. Hogg, was supposed to have developed a method of blocking the line with a short stone. The rule was made to correct this. It didn’t sound good enough for me. So here I am. Can you check with your many friends in the game and enlighten me? After all, you BRITS invented the game and have corrected my use of English many times. While you are at it, I noticed that our HOGS are all pointed in a willy-nilly fashion. Is there a correct orientation? i.e., is the snout supposed to point north or south, or east or west? Perhaps it should point to Greenwich. I really would like to know where the HOG (why not a rabbit?) came from. Thank you in advance for your help. Golden Bias Club Report 2008 Dear Golden Bias Club Member, 2008 was another very good year for Golden Bias. We grew from 114 to 136 members. Membership income during the year was $6,750 plus special contributions of $460, of which $310 was for the Golden Bias parties at the US Open and US National Championships. We provided $2,600 in player support (the NAC was the only major event) and had a total expense of $1,084.16, of which $600 (net $290) was for the Golden Bias parties at the US Open and US National Championships. Those who attended agreed that the parties were both modest and fun, and they had a good time visiting with other boosters and Team USA members who were present. The major events in 2009 are the Asia Pacific games in Malaysia and the Atlantic Rim games in Johannesburg, both with expensive travel. We also support the World Indoor Singles and Champion of Champions (US National Championship winners) players. We expect to increase the level of support to $300 per person in 2009 which adds up to at least $8,400 in player support this year. We have strong teams and want to give them the best support we can so that team membership doesn’t default to the rich & retired. We hope you can promote Golden Bias to others in your clubs and divisions. The membership contribution continues to be $50 for 2009. Please send your contribution to: Annette Schans 15472 N. Ridgeview Rd., Sun City, AZ 85351 Signed: Annette Schans, Chair Golden Bias Club. Golden Bias Club Committee: Dee McSparran, Muriel Rackliff, Marty Schans & Heather Stewart.

Make ‘em Green with Envy Weekly Diary General Notes

DURING the playing season the plant is producing leaves provided that our winter work was done successfully. Now the green keeper’s concern is to maintain the turf at a sensible height in order to be able to manufacture its food in the leaf. A safe height to mow is 0.20 inches above soil level. To achieve this, the machine must be kept in first class condition by following the manufacturer’s instructions. Greens containing thatch will need to be cleaned regularly in order to get down to soil level. It is important not to disturb the soil with scarifiers. Use a scarifier to clean as much of the dead and dying material as is possible to prevent accumulation and slow running greens. At two week intervals maintain moisture levels in the green to 6.00 inches. Remove from the surface any moisture from storm water and heavy rains. Feed as required. The plants will soon indicate if there is an absence of food available. Keep the green firm – a loose surface will damage easily. Wide rollers do not cause excessive pressure. Mowing, brushing, rolling, fertilizing, spiking and scarifying must be done diagonally. This will not affect the play as the bowl dies and there are no guide lines for bowlers to use. Spike areas after play during wet conditions, particularly where moisture shows around the mat positions. You are exchanging water for air and the green dries off quicker and firmer. MONDAY Brush – shallow spike – mow and turn the green. TUESDAY Roll and move rink positions. If fertilizing is due have the equipment and materials ready and water in the fertilizer. WEDNESDAY Brush and mow – move rink positions. At two week intervals in moist conditions lightly scarify with a thatch control reel in both directions diagonally to speed up the green. This also prevents thatch build up. Do not touch the soil with the scarifier. To scarify in one direction only will improve the draw on one hand only. THURSDAY Roll and move rink positions. Every two weeks spike at 4.00 inches with solid tines diagonally. FRIDAY Brush and mow - move rink positions. SATURDAY Roll off the dew to speed up the green by several seconds. Move rink positions. SUNDAY Brush and mow the green. Move rink positions. With grateful acknowledgment to bowls international club edition Summer 2007, in which this article appeared. Ed.

Origin of the Hog Line According to page 93 of ‘Canada Curls’, a book written by Doug Maxwell which outlines the history of curling in Canada, the origin is as follows: The term is derived from Scottish agriculture. In a country where so many sheep were raised, a lamb in its first year of life was called “a hog”. In time, the name came to represent a STRAGGLER or a WEAKLING, the one most likely to fall prey to predators, or to be culled from the flock. Similarly, a curling rock that could barely make it into the playing area was called a HOG, and therefore was culled from the rest. The DEMARCATION to decide which curling rock was “healthy” and which was not, was called the HOG LINE. Originally, the hog line had only one use and that was to determine whether or not a rock was in play. It was only after the long slide came into the game that the near hog line came into being. This was to prevent someone from sliding all the way down the ice and placing the rock exactly where he wanted it to be. More information on the book may be obtained from: Whitecap Books Limited, 351 Lynn Avenue, North Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada V7J2C4.

Better Bowls

Continued from page 7

I was recently a non-playing umpire at a major tournament where I was neither introduced nor thanked by the Tournament Directors. At the US. Open, a non-playing umpire is needed at virtually every green. That can mean three or four umps per day, and the competition extends for six days. The National Championships are played on two greens and require an ump on each green for 3 1⁄2 or four days. Points tournaments and the Playdowns deserve non-playing umps, and major invitationals would also be enhanced by having a non-playing umpire available. The future of “umpire services” is easy to predict unless something meaningful is changed. (Remember “change”?) Our two choices about when to act are basically to do something ahead of the curve or waiting until we are in a crisis. Sports are defined by their rules, and in a sport as precise and complex as ours, an ump should have every bowler’s respect. Many bowlers do appreciate our umps, but perhaps it’s time for us to put our gratitude into a form that’s more consequential than just a sincere smile and a firm handshake.

Lawn Bowls Magazine Spring 2009

There’s far more to Sarasota than white sandy beaches. Come and play lawn bowls. Stroll through an art museum where the Venetianstyle architecture is as much an art form as the masterpieces within. Gaze upon rare exotic orchids. Find the perfect gift in one of the most renowned shopping areas in the world. Paddle through lush tropical forests. Listen to a full orchestra ensemble. No matter what your distraction from the beach, the Sarasota area has a multitude of activities. Photo by Ingrid James

Sarasota

By Flo Barclay Social activity and tournaments have kept our members beaming and bowling. Twice-monthly bistros prepared and presented by Ingrid & Duncan James follow the Friday President’s Draw. These popular events have attracted many members accompanied by their families and friends. 60 bowlers representing England, Canada, Scotland & USA played in our International Day Tournament in which England took the honors this year. On January 10, President Ron Buck organized a full day’s play of Fours, Mixed Pairs, Men’s Pairs & Women’s Pairs. This unusually formatted tournament was attended by 20 teams (80 bowlers in all) from Clearwater, Lakeland, Maple Leaf Estates, Sarasota, Sun City Center, Sun-N-Fun & World Parkway. Overall winner was the team of Don Rice, Tony & Julia Farrell (Sun-N-Fun) & Shirley Vidler (Sarasota).
