BEST WISHES FOR CHRISTMAS FROM THE PRESIDENT Hello one and all, time for my three monthly words of wisdom…
We are sorry I did not make the last fun day. We and our dogs were away down the South Island and intended to come to the day on our way back. A couple of our dogs developed a tummy bug so as to not take the chance this would be passed on to other dogs we decided to come straight home. I understand from Elaine we had quite a reasonable number at this funday. Next Funday will be on Saturday 22nd February. On a sad note condolences to Margaret Liley and family on the sudden loss of her husband John. Margaret and John have supplied the club with the fund-raising peaches for a number of years. While on the subject of looking after dogs I would like to remind all that the weather is warming up quite bit and our dogs feel this. Please please don’t leave them in cars for any length of time. Normal dog temperature is 38.5 degrees and car temperatures can rise to a deadly 49 degrees on a hot day and dogs can suffer brain damage. Please take care for them and if you see dogs in distress in a car don’t hesitate to call the Police or your local SPCA. After that piece of advice now is the time for my wishes for a Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year to everyone and all our dogs. May the Christmas present you get be exactly what you want. Bye KEN MARSH

MAN’S BEST FRIEND While walking through the local park I met up with an old man and his dog. We sat on the bench and he proceeded to tell me that his wife died and that a friend suggested he get a dog so he wouldn’t be so lonely. He said he was glad he took the advice as Ben was his best mate-he could talk to him and they cared for each other. Our pets are so valuable –they make wonderful friends and true companions.

We are also thrilled to be able to co-own and show IMZARDI STARRY EYED DIAMOND (cream) with breeder Sarah Reardon. Picking puppies and at what age? By Dan Harrison on Monday, December 9, 2013 at 2:43pm Many people ask how I picked puppies out and at what age I started sorting them out. As a breeder, I started looking at them as soon as they were up and walking around. I was always looking for great outlines, solid fronts and rears and perfect, outgoing temperaments. I usually started when they were about six weeks old, putting them in ex pens and watching them move. I wanted to see reach, wanted to see things that caught my eye and wanted to see what they had that they could pass on. I always used dogs with beautiful heads, great necks, set where they were supposed to be , great toplines and underlines, nice croups and dogs who had the forechest and could certainly move with that forechest in place. I wanted the shoulder blades to be at or very near to the withers, well arched shoulder blades, well set under upper arms and the whole shoulder assembly be as far as I could get it back on the body. This was what I had to have in dogs that I bred and dogs that I kept. I might give in on heads, toplines and rears, but I had to have the front to keep that body structure moving in the right way. At the young age of six to eight weeks, I wanted to see what kind of head they had, what kind of neckset they had, what topline looked like and where the movement was starting. I wanted to see balance and I wanted to see those legs all moving in the same direction, even at this young age. As they got older, I still wanted to see balance and the real breed character they had, but, most of all, I wanted to see that fantastic movement. In my opinion and in what I saw in my young puppies, a dog who has the front and rear we are looking for can use each end very early in its job of walking around. I want to see the good points, like a beautiful head, nice withers and neckset, great topline, beautiful underline nice movers and nice croup with a great tailset. I look for far more than a great front, but I demand that great front and I will , for sure, omit some of the other features if the puppy can move, naturally and gracefully and with little effort, all around the pen. I just sort of watch them and see the movement and certainly take note of those who can walk and trot around all the forechest that I demand on even my young ones. I did this at six to eight weeks, twelve weeks and then about three to four months, always looking for the same thing: great outline, great body and, most importantly a beautiful movement, front and rear. Good fronts, to me, usually meant good rears, too. I demanded both and was seldom disappointed. I would sometimes give up a great head and keep a plainer one, give up a great topline and keep a curvier one, but would never give up that great forechest as that is what I always bred for. By then, I had narrowed the litter down to what I was wanting and just kept a couple or three or four to watch how they develop. I usually worked with them again as I got ready to show them and, after showing a couple of times, I soon decided which ones stayed and which ones were on the look out for new homes, either pet or show. Again, decent fronts got show homes and not so decent went to pet homes. I found this the best way to pick out young ones and wondered how people did this now. Dan Harrison December 8, 2013
