How to take care of Organic Pillows? So you just purchased organic pillows for both your bedroom and for the furniture in order to make the living room a bit more comfortable. This is a great way to go green and reduce the amount of plastics produced, as there is actually a large amount of plastic byproduct used in standard pillows. This is better for the environment while the organic pillows are often incredibly comfortable. However, there are specific tips you need to take in order to ensure the overall care of your organic pillows.

1. Use Protective Spray on Pillows to Avoid Moisture and Stains If you are using pillows that don’t require a cover or case, such as pillows on your couch and other furniture, there are protective pillow sprays to apply to the fabric. This blocks out moisture and other stains, making it that much easier to take care of. There are times you are going to use the pillow and sweat, whether you know it or not. Without the protective spray the pillow is just going to absorb it. After absorbing the spray it is going to possibly change the color of the fabric or make the pillow smell. The spray blocks all of this moisture out. It is also helpful when it comes to spills, because if you spill a drink on the pillow, the pillow typically absorbs it all up, making it impossible to clean. The guard on the spray allows you to enjoy a stain free pillow for years to come.

2. Always Use a Pillow Case on Organic Pillows

For your bed, always use an organic pillow case along with the pillow. You are going to want to wash the pillow case every few days, if not once a week, in order to keep it fresh and clean. On top of this, you avoid changing the color of the pillow due to sweating during the night. Pillow cases are a must no matter what kind of pillow you are using, so always have spares on hand.

3. Avoid Harmful Chemicals when Washing Pillow. Stick with Mild Detergent If you need to wash the pillow, you can do so gently with warm water and a mild detergent, but never use bleach, even if the pillow is white or a light color. The bleach is a harmful chemical and may end up damaging the organic pillow and cause the fibers to break down. Bleach may actually completely damage and destroy the pillow, which is why you need to avoid using such chemicals. The entire purpose of buying an organic, green pillow is to reduce your carbon footprint and the number of chemicals needed in order to live better. Once you start using bleach you undo everything you did buy buying organic. Washing the pillow is best done by removing the buckwheat hulls or other organic material from the inside of the pillow case before washing it. If you place the entire pillow in water while the buckwheat or other material is still inside of it you are just going to ruin the interior stuffing as it absorbs the water but doesn’t really have much of a way to rid itself of the moisture, causing it to grow mildew and other byproducts inside of the pillow, causing it to be useless and no longer of high quality.
